    RIDING THE TRAIL

12km to Paeroa, a large rural town made ‘world famous in New Zealand’ with the Lemon & Paeroa soft drink. There is a large café next to the Paeroa i-SITE, on the left side of the cycle trail.

    Paeroa to Waihi Station, 24km

From the Paeroa i-SITE, cross the road and follow the cycle trail south to a road bridge on the edge of town. Cross this bridge using the footpath and then look for the trail on the left-hand side of the road – it’s reasonably obvious. The trail will take you beside Rotokohu Rd for a few minutes before entering the Karangahake Gorge. This is a stunning gorge with bridges, forest, mountain views, a long tunnel and a fascinating history.

There is a café at Waikino Station, 200m off the main trail. If you’re intending to catch the vintage train on to Waihi, check the timetable before you head off. During the summer and in the holidays there is a daily train at 2:30pm (and yes it will take your bike too).

Alternatively, continue riding to Waihi Station, 8km past Waikino Station (this last section has a few short steep hills).

Paeroa to Te Aroha Station, 22km

From the Paeroa i-SITE on Seymour St, cross the road and follow the cycle trail south to a road bridge on the edge of town. Cross this bridge using the footpath, then look for the trail on your right – it’s on the other side of the roadside fence. You will ride along the railway formation all the way to Te Aroha. About 8km from Paeroa you will pass a lovely Devonshire Tea shop on your left.

The old Te Aroha station is two blocks from the main street, which has cafés and other shops, as well as public toilets and plenty of accommodation.

The Hauraki Rail Trail is mostly Grade 1 (Easiest), which makes it suitable for riders of all ages, abilities and fi tness levels. The trail is wide and smooth with mostly gentle gradients.

    Thames to Paeroa, 34km

Starting from the Thames i-SITE on the corner of Mary and Queens Streets, take any side street out towards the coast and after a few hundred metres you will meet

the Thames Coastal Walkway, a shared path for both walkers and cyclists. Turn left and follow this to the start of the Hauraki Rail Trail. The offi cial start to the cycle trail is at the wharf, where there is a café, a takeaway shop and a car park.

From The Wharf Café, follow the signs south out of town. You will ride alongside the main highway, across farmland, under the highway and then across more farmland.

If your caffeine levels are dropping or you need a snack, about 12km from Thames you’ll see a small sign pointing to The Cheese Barn Café, which is located 200m off the trail to your left.

Another 10km down the trail you will discover the small town of Hikutaia, which has a pub and a popular café called the Convenient Cow. You have to cross the highway to get to it, so take extra care. From the Convenient Cow café its another

    ALONGSIDE THE TRAIL

From lush green plains to rugged ranges and steep gorges, there’s plenty to explore alongside this diverse trail.

One side of the trail is bordered by the

Hauraki Plains, a green, scenic area,

while the Coromandel Forest Park and

the Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park sit on

    the other.

The Kauaeranga Valley is full of historic

walks, including the Pinnacles, one of

    New Zealand’s most popular overnight

walks. There is also the Wainora Kauri

walk, and the Catleys Track, which

    crosses the Kauaeranga River.

The Karangahake Gorge is rich in

mining history and full of walkways and

old tunnels to explore. This picturesque

stretch of river was once home to one of

the busiest gold strikes in the country.

There were once three huge steam-

operated mining batteries here – built in

    the 1890s to process ore.

The 2.5km Windows Walk is probably

the gorge’s most popular walk. It takes in

the ruins of the Talisman battery and a

    tunnel overlooking the Waitawheta River

with ‘windows’ blasted by the miners.

As well as all of this incredible natural

scenery to explore, this trail also has its

fair share of cafés, shops and interesting

    townships within close proximity.

    Waihi is another town that’s

    steeped in history; evidence of

its gold-mining past can be seen

    everywhere. Visit the excellent Gold

Discovery Centre and take a tour

of the Martha Mine for views into

the open pit. Also walk around Lake

Gilmour or follow the historic and

    art trails.

    Waihi

    ‘World famous in New Zealand’,

Paeroa is the hometown of the

soft drink L&P (Lemon & Paeroa).

    A 7m-high replica of a past L&P

bottle now graces the main street.

    Paeroa

Thames exudes history and character. Built on the pioneering industries of gold mining and

kauri logging, this town has plenty of historical hotels and buildings from the era, including

fantastic museums. Activities include visiting a butterfl y garden, scenic fl ights and fi shing.

KAIMAI MAMAKU FOREST PARKThe 37,000ha Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park is a museum of natural and human history featuring abundant native birdlife, mature and regenerating bush and magnifi cent waterfalls.

The park forms a natural barrier

between the Waikato and Bay of Plenty

regions. It is steeped in both Maori and

European history, which can be explored

on the park’s walks and tramping tracks.

    Karangahake Gorge in the northern

section of the park (and on the Paeroa

to Waihi leg of the Hauraki Rail Trail)

takes in the sparkling Ohinemuri River,

which threads its way through a striking

    landscape rich in gold-mining history.

At the Te Aroha end of the trail, spend

an hour or a whole day exploring the

many tracks that lead up and around
