Many had planned, applied leave & looked forward to this Retreat. It was not only to a time of physical rest from work, but also a time of coming away from the busyness of life to a place of spiritual renewal and bonding with family and fellow Gracians. This Retreat “Many Generations One Family” saw at least 3 generations of Gracians getting together to spend time learning the Word God, praying and have fellowship with the spiritual family. The Children, Youth and Adults had their own respective programs but yet, there was great synergy when they got together for the Worship Services and games. Gracians responded to the Word of the Lord, many praying for the Lord to do a deeper work in their lives at the altar. They had personal encounters with the Lord. It is moments like these that we see hearts surrendered & opened before the Lord. Some others were encouraged by the small group sharing after the sermons and also the various workshops. They were recharged and anticipated the next Church Retreat. The Youth had services and activities that deeply impacted them too. Many fostered new friendships and embraced servanthood. The Children too had a wonderful time learning the Word and always a great delight when we witnessed the children gave a sterling presentation at the combined Service on Monday. I was especially delighted to see many joining the Retreat for the first time and also many who were at the Retreat year after year. Kudos to them. I want to express my deep appreciation to Pastor Alvin, Eric Chong and the rest of the members be it from the main committee or the youth committee for their hard work in in organising this Retreat. They truly displayed a powerful spirit of devoted service for the Lord. As the Grace Retreat is an annual highlight of the church, I hope more Gracians will be able to join Retreat 2018. The dates, place and speaker are confirmed. I look forward to it. In the meantime, for those of us who were at the Retreat, let us continue to live out what we have received from the Lord. Gracians, let us move forward with great dedication and passion as a Missional Family Church. Ps Calvin Lee Senior Pastor

GRACE RETREAT 2017

A few weeks ago, 811 Gracians gathered at Pullman Bangsar Hotel in KL for our annual Grace Retreat.

In the meantime, for those of us who were at the Retreat, let us continue to live out what we have received from the Lord.

Gracians, let us move forward with great dedication and passion as a Missional Family Church.

Deut 31:12“Assemble the people - men, women and children, and the foreigners residing in your towns - so they can listen and learn to fear the Lord your God and follow carefully all the words of this law.”

This year’s Grace Retreat was centered around the theme “Many Generations, One Family”, and saw more than 800 Gracians, young and old, gather to worship in unity, immerse in God’s word, cross comfort zones and generational boundaries to form bonds with one another, and grow as a family on a redemptive mission.

We were blessed to have guest speakers Dr Daniel Ho and Ps Douglas Frederick with us for both the adult and youth services, ministering in power and truth, and offering us a fresh take on Scripture lessons and existing paradigms. Both preachers shared from their own life experiences, and expounded on what it means, and what it takes, to be the Church for whom Jesus Christ gave His life to sanctify, that walks fully according to God’s heart and precepts, and that constantly seeks to reconcile the lost to the Father.

In addition to workshops that helped to deepen our understanding of what we’d learned each day, we had the wonderful opportunity of meeting and engaging with fellow Gracians from all walks of life through small group discussions, as well as vocational and interest group networking lunches. We saw how each of our different talents, skills, and passions were being used by God in His great plan, and as part of the wider church body, to impact the world. The “Then and Now” games evoked nostalgia and brought about fresh learning, as we stepped into the shoes of team members from across different generations, exploring one another’s cultures, experiences and familiar forms of entertainment.

All in all, this time spent in retreat, worship and reflection has not only taught us what it means to be part of the body of Christ - as individuals and as a community, but it has also gifted us with a valuable taste of this very lifestyle through the conversations had, friendships made, and the love and care shown to one another through all our differences. We thank God for His presence, provision and faithfulness, and for a deeply blessed time together. Already looking forward to next year’s retreat!

From the moment I saw the Grace Retreat first advertised in the Grace Bulletin… it was one of those things that was more than just a nudge from The Lord – it was an outright PUSH to go. I’m thrilled that my family of 4 did. How do you even put into words of this experience? It is beyond words… it took my relationship with Jesus to a much deeper level and MUCH more personal. Time intentionally set aside to worship the Lord and immersing in His presence on this retreat was so valuable that it passed by in a blink.

I have experienced rejection from my close family members who were non-believers when I shared the good news with them. As a result, it had brought much hurt which became deeply rooted in my heart subtly that I did not even realise. Although the unpleasant experience did not totally stop me from sharing the good news with others but I cannot deny that the fear of rejection had hindered me from being sensitive to the Holy Spirit and allowing him to take full control of me.

I encountered the Holy Spirit in a way that I never had up until that point. I was filled with the tangible presence of the Holy Spirit, when Pastor Daniel Ho shared on Evangelism that it hit me and convicted my heart in a way which caught me dumbfounded. I could only respond with tears, overflowing of tears. This retreat provided my family the opportunity to quiet our minds, to reflect and spend time with the Lord from the busyness in our lives. I received healing in my heart and was able to forgive those who had hurt me as I allowed myself to draw closer to God and let his amazing grace overflow in me.

I believe many of us have been very blessed by Pastor Daniel Ho’s messages and they have refreshed, rekindled and restored

GRACE RETREAT 2017

Quotes and testimonies from retreat-goers:

“My greatest takeaway from the sermons and services was that evangelism is a lifestyle. We need to be empowered by the Holy Spirit to be a witness for Him. I was reminded once again that evangelism is simply taking the initiative to share Christ with another, and leaving the results to God.”

“The questions I have carried for years were answered during this retreat. I have been asking for years: What is the meaning of my [vocational] work? What legacy can I leave behind? The Lord gracefully reminded me that I have been sent to expand the kingdom of God. The workplace is a field in which I can share the Gospel and lead more people to Christ.”

“I was blessed by the Vocational Networking Lunch - to meet and hear from older people with more experience who willingly imparted their knowledge to us and provided guidance. It was a very intentional time of connection and networking!”

“The Lifetime game (youth programme) taught me that the things we chase for are not as important as Who we should focus our life upon.”

“I enjoyed Lifetime a lot because of the many learning points - for example, to always believe in Christ until the last days. I also loved the Then & Now games, where I met some people of the older generations and had the opportunity to play with them.”

“This was the first time I had more in-depth interactions with the youth and young adults in church. I was very impressed by them. They behaved so well, showing God’s fruit - they were caring, willing to take on responsibilities, joyful, and took action - these are areas in which I want to learn from them.”

us so that we can continue our race well empowered with The Lord’s courage, grace and strength as the children of God. Every Gracian, young or old can and must build a deep relationship with

the Lord to gain access to the power that He has promised us to fulfill our destiny as a Missional Family Church.

My 2 kids from R-age who participated in the ‘Lifetime’ youth program were richly blessed by Ps Doug’s message on how teenagers can play an active role in maintaining a healthy family environment. The Lifetime program has indeed impacted and inspired them to share the gospel with their friends.

A BIG shout out to Pastor Alvin and his amazing planning committee for serving

us with excellence and edifying one another across different generations from the co-ordination of the hotel accommodation, transport, wide spread of food to the workshops, networking lunches, and the list goes on…

The “Then & Now” Interactive Games were awesome, where the young ones meet the younger ones, working hand in hand to accomplish the tasks. Everyone is important and special, playing a part in the Body of Christ.

If you long for a closer, more personal relationship with God – don’t miss the next retreat. eliminate all distractions and allow the Holy Spirit to work in you and through you powerfully.

Throughout the retreat, you will have the opportunity to experience the Holy Spirit, either for the first time or to re-kindle the fire. No matter where you are in your walk with the Lord, He always has something new to give you. Come and join us in the next Retreat in 2018!

‘“At the same time,’ says the LORD, “I will be the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be MY people.”’ Jeremiah 31:1

God told Abraham to offer up his son Isaac on Mount Moriah. The next morning Abraham set out on a three-day journey with his son Isaac and his two servants.

When they came to the mountain, Isaac asked in Genesis 22:7, ‘“My Father!...... Look, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”

Genesis 22:8 says ‘And Abraham said, “My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering.”’

Isaac didn’t receive the Word or revelation from God directly. Only his father Abraham received the Word and Isaac trusted in his father’s word.

‘“For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord…….”’ Genesis 18:19.

Isaac could have broken out into an argument demanding to see the lamb or whichever animal that was going to be sacrificed. He could have rebelled and said that he will not move from here till Abraham shows him the animal. But Isaac believed and trusted in his father’s words. He probably knew his father would not utter meaningless words and would not act according to his own accord. He knew that his father operated on God’s word and trusted in the Word of God completely. As Genesis 18:19 tells us, Isaac was taught the word of God by his father Abraham.

He had observed his father’s spiritual walk. Could you imagine a son believing his father to this extent? This is the kind of example Abraham set for his son that during a time of testing, his son was satisfied in his daddy’s words and just leaned on him. Can our sons and daughters trust and rely on us fathers and mothers like Isaac did towards Abraham?

The father’s faith and the son’s obedience coincided and became one. The son’s faith progressed and grew based on his father’s teachings and his faith in God.

Today, if you are not a biological father remember Apostle Paul. Even when he was in prison he prayed for his spiritual children. He kept thinking about Timothy who was his spiritually born son and Paul longed to see him. 2 Timothy 2 and 4 says “…To Timothy, a beloved son……..Greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy.”

As we just celebrated Father’s Day in June last month, let us pray that all our precious fathers will enter into a deeper walk with Christ and receive the Word and walk as fathers of faith so that their faith will pass on to their children.

PRAISE REPORT - Alpha ParentingTeenager Course

We thank God for the 46 parents that signed up for the 5 sessions of Alpha Parenting Teenager Course (APC) which ended on 12 May 2017.

The APC gives parents an opportunity to share their feelings and experiences with other parents of teenagers and children who are of the same age and most of all they know they are not alone.

A sense of trust builds with each session through meeting with familiar faces and this gives parents an opportunity to share their experiences, learn new principles and techniques in parenting their teenagers in a safe environment.

As facilitators for the APC, we were truly blessed and thankful that we were able to journey together with the many parents in the 5 sessions where we made many friends too. We were encouraged by the sharing and the testimonies. May each of the parent participants’ be blessed as you continue this parenting journey!

Testimonies from our parents’ participants.

‘Many times, we do not recognise there are problems in our relationships with our children. Sometimes we brush problems aside and think that teenagers are just being difficult. This course has provided many insights into the teenagers’ world and more, importantly, it provides very practical ideas on how to help them through their issues, peer pressure and temptations. The ideas are based on biblical values.’

‘So glad that my husband and I made time for this course. I find myself looking forward to Friday evenings to come and learn more, listen to the experts and fellow parents. Sometimes all we need to know is that we are not alone. Nobody is born a parent. God has given us the gift of our children and it is our responsibility to learn to be the best parent we can. Teenage hood is a challenging period and the dangers are real. Come and learn. You will be blessed and amazed by the difference it will make in your relationship with your children.’

Grace Communities provides an environment through Grace Groups for Gracians to live in community with each other in a way that impact themselves and the world around them. It is a place where worship, discipleship, fellowship and evangelism are both experienced and expressed in and through a small but closely knitted group of believers.

Our journey of faith was never meant to be alone. We all need help and encouragement from fellow brothers and sisters in Christ to keep in step with the Spirit and walk faithfully in the Lord. Through caring leaders and loving members in the Grace Group, Gracians can grow spiritually.

You have already stepped into Grace and are worshipping God with us. Why not take the next step to join a Grace Group and to grow together in Christ.

REACH Story Help seniors age actively!Back in 2015, Chong Kwee Eng, a housewife in her late 60s who lives with her husband and daughter in Jalan Membina, visited our Senior Centre @ Jalan Membina and was glad to discover that the centre would soon be organising activities for seniors like her.

10 years ago, Kwee Eng was a hotel seamstress, but she had to give up her job to take care of domestic chores; and she had been a housewife ever since. She spent time at home alone most of the days while her husband and daughter worked.

Now Kwee Eng is able to spend her time more fruitfully by participating in the variety of programmes provided by REACH Senior Service. She particularly enjoys the nutrition talks and English lessons.

In June 2016, Kwee Eng enrolled in the first module of our English enrichment class along with 14 other seniors.

“As a young girl, I was hopeless at English and had no inkling of the alphabets,” she shared. She began her journey of mastering the English language by learning about the 26 alphabets and phonetics. Kwee Eng has since moved on to her second module and can now spell out the names of the various parts of the human body and of some common animals as well.

Her main source of inspiration is our English teacher, Madam Lee, whom she deems dedicated and patient; cultivating the love for the language in our seniors.

Want to impact the lives of seniors like Kwee Eng? Join us as a befriender and bring hope to our seniors! Email [email protected] for more details!

The first half of 2017 has been momentous for Grace Missions (GM).

As of April, we have now a missions corner at both GI and GII on Sundays. We designed our missions corner to be a one-stop corner for you to ask anything about GM and our missions trips. We thank God that we have been seeing sign ups at our missions corner every week!

Location of Missions CornerGI // Level 2, KoinoniaGII // Level 1, beside the lift lobby

In May, we have received our 4th missions intern, Gabrielle Ong. She would be sent to Chiangmai, Thailand for training before being deployed to West Kalimantan, Indonesia for a 3-month ministry stint under our missionary Caleb Khoo and his family.

When it comes to missions funds, we thank God for your generous giving. To date, you have pledged a total of $1.9m to GM.

When it comes to movement, we have been busy. Over the past six months we saw a total of 51 trips out into the field. 171 of you have been on at least one missions trip with GM over the past six months. We thank God for your involvement and we look forward to more Gracians going out to the missions field in over the next six months.

Grace Assembly is a Missional Family Church. As much as we can have our missions programme as one big spiritual family, it is our prayer that we will see more flesh-and-blood families going out for missions together; that we may minister together, and witness how God move through our family to touch others through the power of the Holy Spirit.

God bless you and have a wonderful month of July.

Blessings,Ps Matthew Tan

From 03 - 05 June 2017, the Men Bible Studies (MBS) embarked on a three (3) day missions to Tanjung Pinang. This was the first time the men came together on a missions trip. Our group consisted of more brothers than sisters – we were told that this is rather unique as trips like these will usually be made up of more females than males – to us, this was a no-brainer, we are from the MBS! That should encourage more men to go out for missions. It was the first missions trip for quite a few of us, and being a first-timer myself, I recalled a quote that often came to mind: “God does not call the qualified; He qualifies the called.”

The highlight of our trip was a topic on “Cyber Wellness” shared by Jack. He spoke about the risk of cyberspace today and impressed on the youths the potential harm. He taught the youths how to look out for strange behaviours of friends and how the youths could step in to help others when needed. Jack concluded with an emphasis that everyone should be wise and careful with the use of social media and email.

On Sunday afternoon, we held a Marriage Workshop for 50 adults, and for 6 churches in Bintan. There was a workshop for men and another separate session for women after which was a combined session. The couples rededicated their marriage to the Lord, that their marriages shall remain strong in love for each other. Many also responded to the request to pray as a couple for next 30 days. We witnessed couples reconciled while some couples with entangled relationships started talking again. What a glorious sight!!!

I am impressed by the brothers in this team as they stood united and ready to serve in whatever role they were given. They gave their best as I saw them ministering to the children, putting up skits for the marriage workshop, leading worship and devotions, playing with the children even though it was their first time in a missions trip. Three cheers for the men in MBS!
