Our May General Meeting is on the sixth and it is our Remembrance Meeting and we will honor those that left us this year. There is much more going on in May, especially at the end of the month. Commandant’s Report May 2014 Tax day has come and gone and now we are getting into our busy season. Today the Detachment took a part in Villanova University’s Annual NROTC Spring Review. The weather wasn’t very good but the show went on. As usual, the month of May should prove to be a very busy month. The Walk for the Wounded will be on 3 May this year. It’s always a great event for an awesome cause. Our May General Meeting is on the sixth and it is our Remembrance Meeting and we will honor those that left us this year. There is much more going on in May, especially at the end of the month. Please pay attention to the events schedule.

For those of you that have missed the last couple meetings, try to make the next one on 6 May. I try to make the meetings quick. We cover what has to be covered and then we move on, leaving more time to socialize with each other. If you are friends with someone that hasn’t been showing up, please call them and try to get them to a meeting. Starting with the next meeting, the uniform is short sleeves. Help Us Help Others (HUHO)

Members! Our 2014 HUHO fund raising Campaign will have kicked-off, March 22 at the Havertown Superfresh and Media ACME Stores. Our fundraising is to help others in need! Among those are individuals and families from over 650,000 Veterans waiting several months for action on their disability/compensation claims! Scheduling of our HUHO Store Events was completed subject to our delivering confirmation letters to Store Managements confirming their prior verbal approvals. ACME Corporate Management has granted approval for our proposed ACME Store activity. At least part, if not all, of our Schedule is contained in this month’s Scuttlebutt. One thing we can be sure of is the Schedule will change: Corporate cancellations, double booking by Store Management action and JR. Vice errors will take its toll. Please keep our Schedule information confidential, within our Detachment Family! Copies of the Schedule will have been emailed or USPS mailed to active HUHO participants and to new Members who have expressed interest in participating. Other Members, who are interested in participating, please contact me at 610 356 8893. During our Campaign, I will call active participants during the early part of each week in order to staff that week’s scheduled event. Generally, if you have not heard from me by Thursday Evening, you may stand at ease! It’s never too late to express appreciation to our participants, spouses and friends for the outstanding results achieved in our past Campaigns! Here’s to a similar, successful Campaign in 2014! Respectively Submitted,

Jack McLeod

Jr. Vice Commandant: Junior Vice Commandant Jack McLeod was not able to attend the meeting, so Bob Spano provided information on the Junior Vice Commandant’s report. The first two Help Us Help Others Campaign events were conducted in late March, and approximately $8,000.00 was donated by area shoppers at local stores. Approximately $3,900.00 was collected in the past weekend at two locations. Service Officer: Con McGinley provided information on upcoming activity at the Coatesville VA Medical Center. A bingo game is scheduled for 10 April 2014. He also mentioned that the Devil Dogs would be having a spaghetti dinner on Saturday, 5 April 2014. Director Kinney: Bill Kinney provided information on the Walk for the Wounded activity. At a recent event, more than $16,000.00 was collected at a casino night. The upcoming Walk for the Wounded is scheduled for 3 May 2014 at the Rose Tree Park in Media, PA, and the Detachment’s report time is 1100. Bill Kinney also provided information on the Delaware County Veterans Memorial in Newtown Square, PA. It is envisioned that a prayer chapel will be constructed on the site and plans are underway to begin the process. It was mentioned that people are leaving small mementos at the Memorial to honor certain individuals. Due to the number of these items, it was mentioned that these items will be collected from time to time and then buried once a year. Bill Kinney mentioned that representatives of the Combined Veterans Alliance will have to meet with representatives of the Delaware County Veterans Memorial to discuss timing issues for responsibilities on Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, September 11, and Veterans Day. Bill Kinney also mentioned that a dinner is scheduled for 13 November 2014 by the DCVMA to honor veterans from different conflicts. More information on this will be available at a later date. Junior Past Commandant: Jim Herbst mentioned that in the past few months the general meetings have not had the same number of members attending the meetings, so he reminded the members to give a “shout out” to other members concerning upcoming meetings, to get more members attending. Jim Herbst also mentioned that for the upcoming meetings with dinners, such as the June meeting, it would be a good idea to have sign up sheets distributed beforehand to get an idea of how many would be attending. Committee Reports: Adopt-a-Highway: John Burfete mentioned that the first Adopt-a-Highway event of the year is scheduled for 13 April 2014 with a report time of 0830. If enough members come out, the cleanup should take approximately forty-five minutes. Refreshments will be supplied for those who participate. Communications: John Burfete also provided information on his supplying information on Detachment activities to the local press. Americanism: Earle Drake reported that the Americanism team of Jim Mulhern, Lloyd Spangler and Earle Drake was joined by John Cook for a recent Americanism program on 19 March 2014 at the Haverford School.

Both organizations were acknowledging donations of $2,000.00 made by the Detachment. Paymaster: Bob Spano presented the paymaster’s report as of 28 February 2014. Bob Spano also reviewed the list of organizations being suggested for donations by the Detachment this month. After the presentation, the students, accompanied by their music teacher, sang a rousing rendition of The Marines Hymn. The school treated the Americanism team to lunch in the cafeteria and applauded them as they entered the cafeteria. The Americanism team also gave a presentation to the Chester City Charter School, including about one hundred students and staff. Butler MCL Detachment will be participating. Earle Drake also mentioned that the Department of Pennsylvania MCL pistol match is scheduled for 31 May and 1 June 2014. He provided details on this upcoming match, and he also indicated that additional details can be found on the Department’s website. He also mentioned that the Detachment will be placing a Flag Day exhibit in the Springfield Library in June 2014. Awards: Jim Herbst awarded a Certificate of Appreciation to Tom Falgiatore for his fundraising contributions for the Detachment in 2013. He also mentioned that John Y. Fairbank of York, PA has been made an honorary member of the Detachment for his assistance in upgrading the condition of the Detachment’s rifles used by the Honor Guard. Color Guard: Jim Donegan reported that the Color Guard had participated in a recent planning meeting for the Delaware County Veterans Memorial Association. The Color Guard also marched in the Springfield St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The next opportunity for the Color Guard to serve is on 3 May 2014 at the Operation First Response Walk for the Wounded event at Rose Tree Park. Two flag bearers are needed. Joe Conigliaro mentioned that our Detachment also provides two rifleman for this event, along with the two flag bearers. The Memorial Day events will be discussed at an upcoming meeting, along with members of the VFW and American Legion. There have been times when the Detachment has been stretched thin due to multiple events scheduled for Memorial Day, so a decision could be made regarding the duties and responsibilities of each organization for Memorial Day. Flag Collection: It was mentioned that one flag collection box has been moved to the Haverford School. It will be repainted and then it will remain at the school. Representatives from the school will be responsible for monitoring the collection of flags at that site.

Minutes continued from page 5

In addition to coming from York, PA on two occasions, John Fairbank had inspected the Detachment rifles and he was instrumental in obtaining parts worth $2,900.00 for the Detachment’s rifles. Ben Sides also mentioned that there is a possibility that the Honor Guard may work with representatives of the U.S. Army to serve at additional funerals for veterans. This will have to be discussed further to determine if the project is feasible. Unfinished Business: No items of unfinished business were raised. New Business: Bob Spano provided a brief review of the organizations suggested for consideration to receive donations this month. These organizations had been reviewed at a recent officers’ staff meeting and approved for consideration by the membership. The organizations and the amounts to be donated in parentheses are (1) The Fisher House Foundation, Rockville, MD ($2,000.00); (2) The Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund, Oceanside, CA (2,000.00); (3) Operation First Response, Culpeper, VA ($2,000.00); and (4) The USO, Philadelphia International Airport, Philadelphia, PA ($2,000.00). Jim Donegan seconded the motion and the motion passed. George Boyajian made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Several members seconded the motion and the motion passed. After the regular closing ceremonies, the meeting was adjourned at 2015. Jim Donegan won the 50/50. Thirty-two members signed the logbook. Respectfully submitted,
