Not a Bad ComboBy Rev. Dr. Jerry Black, Associate MinisterCrosswords. I

    love crossword

    puzzles. The

    easy ones.

    Im not bright

    enough forthe New York

    Times. But

its about working within the box while

learning to think outside the box. Simple

    clues. Multiple possibilities. Sometimes

    logical. Sometimes strange and funny.

    Bewildering. Sorta like parenting.

Can you imagine, for example, what

Joseph must have gone through? An

inconceivable start to being a father.

A trek across the barren landscape on

a three mile per hour donkey named

    Gothchaor something like that. A

woman who wants to stop at every

Braums for some orange sherbet with

pistachios and pickles. No room at

the Holiday Inn Express. Bunking in

the down stairs stable. No doctor on

call. A crabby midwife. A baby. Andno owners manual. Thank God for the

prayers and songs of those shepherds

and the gifts of formula, diapers, and

baby wipes from those three rich fellows.

Without those, who knows what kind of

    week this could have been.

    But somehow, and somewhere

    between Bethlehem, Egypt, and

Nazareth, Joseph looked outside the box

and solved the puzzle. Because the son

for which he became the day-to-day dad,

turned out to be quite a fellow. Not only

did he learn the skills of a hard working

carpenter, but he grew in the knowledg

of the Lord and in the deep appreciatio

for the worth of every individual. He

learned how to think in abstracts; outsid

the box; on multiple levels; and with

insights that stunned folks as early as thage of twelve. And he learned the art

of blending two models for parenting:

Joseph and God. Not a bad combo

    you think?

May God bless all our dads on

    Fathers Day, especially those who

like Joseph, proceed with no owners

manual, and who yet find the ability

    to raise children, develop character,

and imprint the love of Godour holy

    Parent. Happy Fathers Day!
