ON THE COVER

features

house& home | June 2013 | house and home on l ine . com8

It’s good to be back home. I’m talking about my return to the magazine. I worked here some 10 years ago under the leadership of the late great Linda

Barth, whose enthusiasm for interior design showed through in every issue. Then came the talented Sandra Cook who recently left to travel and explore

new professional territory. I’m thrilled to follow their leads, especially during a time of such renewal for

our wonderful city. Home sales are high, job creations appear strong, and the arts& entertainment scene is vibrant . . . what an exciting time to be living and work-ing here.

Here at the magazine, we also are embracing a brand new day by welcoming intwo new department features.

Our first addition to note is TASTEMAKER, designed to spotlight area artisans, craftsmen and style makers. The purpose is to introduce those people who trulystandout in their fields. This month, powder rooms make some powerfully bigdesign statements, thanks to Leslie Sinclair, owner of Segreto Finishes. She beganher business, which now employs 35 people, in the hallways of her own home. You surely don’t want to flip past her work!

We’ve also created EDITOR’S PICKS – a page or more filled with selected coolfinds from online and local vendors. Items that say “take me home.” This month,we’ve devoted our new Editor’s Picks to suggesting possible fun gift ideas for dads.Father’s Day is June 16. You might want to check out our Calendar for a few spe-cial events scheduled for that day. Enjoy!

Of course, we will continue to share Mercer Arboretum’s Darrin Duling’sinformative gardening advice and knowledge, in addition to the inspirationalBefore & After work of Joetta Moulden.

This month’s feature is an exciting one for us to publish. In case you missed it,we’re giving you a glimpse inside the ASID show house in Sugar Land. The archi-tectural and design details are striking.

I would enjoy hearing from you. Tell me about your own homes and if youhave a tip to share with others, please send it my way.My email is [email protected].

If artist and businesswoman extraordinaire Leslie Sinclair actuallyhad one of those “old-fashioned” Rolodexes sitting on her desk, itwould contain a virtual who’s who of Houston clients—from design-ers, homeowners, builders and architects.

The owner of Segreto Finishes, unintentionally began her businessin the hallways of her own Memorial home. Soon her past timeattracted mass attention and blossomed into a business that nowemploys approximately 35 people.

The work of Segreto Finishes, a decorative painting and fine fin-ishes company, is often highlighted in Sinclairs’ blog: www. segre-tosecrets.squarespace.com. (photo by Megan Thompson Lovoi Photography)

Powder Room Dreamsan interview with Leslie

What are the decorative trends for powder baths? There’s a trend leaning toward cleaner and crisper looks. We’re doing alot of stenciling for wallpaper effects. Graphic stencils are becoming verypopular as well as the quiet sophistication of plaster, which can read OldWorld or contemporary.

You can really have fun with smaller spaces, since the size generallykeeps expenses down. Using painting techniques is easier to replace thanwallpaper, plus there are no odd seams to deal with in those out-of-the-way spaces usually found in half baths.

Think of the of the powder room as being the jewel box of the home.

How dramatic can you go in a small full or half bath?Very Dramatic . . . go all out. Murals can enlarge a space, and patternson the walls or on the cabinets can make a big impact. I typically makethe decision of what finish—whether it’s plaster, murals or stenciling—

Terracotta hues and a rich, golden metallic stenciled in a baroqueDamask pattern transform this powder room into one of glamour. The ceilings are encrusted with gold leaf and aged with an umberglaze. We added gold highlights to the finished cabinet to impart abit of elegance. (photo by Wade Blissard)

would make the most impact by looking at what is going in the room.If the sink, mirror and floors are very dramatic, it’s usually better to gowith a simple finish.

If there isn’t a “special element” in the room, then the walls need toevoke a stronger statement.

If you were to suggest doing one thing to a small bath or powderroom, what would it be?Focus on your cabinets. Put your money into making them feel like finepieces of furniture. And put on a quality furniture finish. You do notwant to overpower the other elements—such as the sink or mirror—inthe room.

What is the most elaborate powder room you’ve ever done?We did a mural inspired by a 16th century Fresco painted at Torre diBellosguardo, a former hunting lodge outside of Florence.

What has been the simplest? Those with a pretty glazed cabinet ora plastered wall. In one bath, we plas-tered the walls and finished the cabi-netry to look like old stone highlight-ing the beautiful old basin and mirror.

Getting PersonalWhat do you collect, or what canyou not get enough of?I love looking at homes, and goodfood and wine . . . love shopping withmy girls—and Pinterest.

What or who inspires you?I am inspired by so many things:Fabrics and surfaces that designersbring in, special pieces in rooms . . .and nature—especially the way theday’s light plays off of simple findslike leaves, grasses, flowers.

What's your favorite go-to place(s)for decorative items? Joyce Horn Antiques, Boxwood, junkshops, IKEA, and, of course, my ownstore, Segreto Boutique.

What decorating books do you like? Celery Kimble’s books, “The Houses of Veranda,” and all sorts of bookson Europe.

You’ve written a book, “Segreto: Secrets to Finishing BeautifulInteriors,” which has been released to rave reviews . . . . where is itbeing sold?On Amazon, my own Web site (www.segretofinishes.com) and atBriargrove Pharmacy & Gifts, Berings Hardware, Brazos Bookstore,River Oaks Bookstore, and others listed on my site. —SF

Ellen and her husband, Terry Phillips, called me at the suggestion of afriend and neighbor who is a custom homebuilder. She said her friendshared my “style” with her and “after checking out your Web site, I got agood feel for what to expect. The old kitchen was just too white andwhen the appliances began to die, I knew this was my chance to redothe kitchen!” she explained. BY JOETTA MOULDEN • PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANET LENZEN

AFTER: Since the wood floors extended underneath the island, it was a no-brainer torebuild the island on one level, parallel to the sink, with pull-out drawers for recy-cling, pots and pans and other necessary kitchen items. The old cooktop did not fitits space. A stainless Frigidaire Professional Series side-by-side, full-size freezer andrefrigerator replaced the 28-year-old white Sub Zero unit.

BEFORE: The odd-shaped island with its black granite tiles looked dated and did notfunction as well as it could have for today’s lifestyles. The old white Sub Zero was onits last legs. The old cooktop moved around in a too-large of an opening.

Ellen really appreciated the way I walked through, measured thekitchen and quickly came up with a workable plan.

“It took Terry a while to embrace your ideas but he ‘got them’ in notime. He got his nearby butler’s pantry wine chillers (not shown), so hewas happy. I liked your practical and functional plan right way and theoverall concept. It was just what I wanted.”

The contractor, Calloway Custom Builders, lives behind the coupleand knows the house well. Wood floors run underneath the rebuiltisland, which prompted the decision to rebuild the old odd-shaped islandacceptable to Terry, as he had been worried about stripping in woodflooring that possibly would not match the existing stain. In addition torecycling drawers placed onto the front side of the island, the contractoradded drawers for dishtowels, cookbooks and a mixer in the side cubbiesof the island, located on the part that faces the dishwasher.

The new backsplash subway tile is St. Gaudens Balboa BronzeCollection BSK—8-inch by 2-inch tile in “Desert,” from Marble & TileCollection. It is laid like bricks and offers a contrasting texture to thesmooth granite. The brown 50/50 Dropped Divider SilGranit sink is byBlanco and is 9 inches deep and the Glacier Bay Lyndhurst bridge faucetwith separate sprayer in brushed nickel came from Home Depot.

SilGranit is made of 80 percent rock-hard granite, and features sixfashionable colors and 21 shapes that complement any decor. SilGranit isthe most cleanable sink available on the market today that resists scratch-es, stains and chips. Plus, it heats up to 536° F. It is also resistant to acidsand alkalis, easy to maintain, colored all the way through and guaranteedwith a limited lifetime warranty.

AFTER: The deeper sink sports a new bridgefaucet and separate sprayer. A new subway tilebacksplash adds texture and functional style tothe new granite countertop. Xena the cat, enjoys her spot underneath the new island.

BEFORE: The once shallow sink and singlelever faucet was replaced with a new bridgefaucet.

“I just love the new islandand the new, 9-inch deep dou-ble sink. The granite counter-top is beautiful, and the space isfantastic.”

Ellen points out she addi-tionally bought the artworkfrom artists at The Bayou CityArts Festival.

How many of us can lay claim to wasted space in our homes? There are ways we can reconfigure those under-utilized spaces, whether

it’s in an attic, the foyer, in a hallway or under the stairs.

PHOTO GALLERIESHallways, generally considered just a passageway from one room toanother, beg for attention. A mini art or picture gallery—utilizing familyphotos that may have been collecting dust in an attic—can fill these cor-ridors with visual interest.

Interior Designer Oni Roberts of Oni Designs recommends using blackand white photos for a more contemporary feel. “All frames should be thesame color, all matted and symmetrical. You don’t want it to look clut-tered.” Complete the look with good lighting. After all, you want to beable to see the pictures on the wall.

For more traditional looks, Interior Designer Pamela Hope of PamelaHope Designs says that you can mix and match frames, as well as black

and white, and color photos.“The key to this style is howthe frames are arranged. Laythem out on the floor and putthem together like a puzzle.Small and large frames can bestacked to achieve this. I liketo think of my arrangement asa grid so that despite the dif-ferent shapes and sizes, theoverall collection forms nicelines on the outside edges. ”

OFFICE SPACEUnless there is a revolving doorof visitors coming to stay, whynot turn the spare bedroominto a study or office?

Hope suggests adding sever-al bookcases to achieve thislook. “Have bookshelves madeto line at least one wall or buyinexpensive bookcases and putthem side by side. If you likeone bookcase, you won’tbelieve how good two or threelook together. It gives a customlook for a lot less.”

Don’t want to give up thespare bedroom? Then, have thebest of both worlds by makingit into an office as well.

Roberts shares a tip on cre-ating such a dual-purpose

space: “Get an armoire that you can close up. Instead of a full size bed,get a day bed and make it look like a reading room. Just be sure the clut-ter is filed away so no one trips.”

OPENING CLOSETSIt is easy to hang on to the notion of what a closet typically offers, butwhat if it can be more than just a place to store clothes? A good carpentercan add a floating desk, remove the bars and add shelving to create theperfect work niche.

Don Yokovich, president of the Closet Factory, explains that manyolder homes have reach-in closets. In order to maximize space he suggestsremoving the return walls. “Hire a trim carpenter or contractor to takeout the return walls and open them up to reach into the corner areas. It’snot a real complicated process.”

Walk-in closets also may make practical supply rooms. He suggestsadding shelving, drawers that house papers and a wireless printer. “It ispossible to combine organization and aesthetics while also making itfunctional and reachable.”

LANDING LIBRARIESThe upstairs landing can be much more than just a resting place. Oneuseful and picturesque option is to turn the area into a mini library. Inorder to make the space more functional, Hope suggests adding a placeto sit. “If space permits, you can anchor the area by adding an interest-ing chair and a small rug.”

THIS PAGE: Attics offer more than storage space for holiday decora-tions. Interior Designer Laura Michaelides helped a Heights couple trans-form their attic space, with its slanted roof angles and small doorways, into a playroom for their little son. (photos by Miro Dvorscak)

KITCHEN STORAGEKitchen kickboards may offer sur-prising storage options. The areaunder the cabinets generally hasonly an aesthetic purpose but it canbe utilized to add more space.Kickboards (also known as toeboards) can be made into “kick-board cupboards.”

John Johnston, owner of DesignerKitchens (and on the board of direc-tors of the Kitchen and BathAssociation) explains that this areavaries in size. “In traditionallydesigned homes, the width of thetoe-boards is about 4 inches or 5 inches tall, but modern designed homescan have up to 10-inch toe boards. Depending on the width of this area, you can have a toe board cupboard installed to hold pot and pan lids,

Tupperware containers, rolled goodslike aluminum foil and even stepstoolsif the space is large enough.” Thoseextra inches of space can sometimes gofar for a person with limited space.

Reclaiming wasted space can be aworthwhile investment—of time andthought—that pays big in reaping totalenjoyment of your home.

TREND ALERT:

The heart of the home has gone alfresco.Everyone still gathers in the kitchen – but, yes, these days it’s outside,

with complete living and dining spaces. Outdoor living spaces rank high on the must-have list for homes. A survey, in fact, conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of PLAN-

ET, the national trade association of landscape industry professionals, shows locals spending more than ever before on outdoor kitchens andliving areas that include such desired amenities as landscaping, irrigationand lighting.

Area designers and vendors, also excited about the growing outdoortrend, share a few cool new ideas to get the most from patios, balconies, decks and backyards.

DESIGNER TIPSInterior Designer Julia Blailock likes big downy cushions accenting furniture selections uphol-stered in cottons, linens or outdoor fabrics. Such a setting says, “Come sit down and relax.”

“Indoor/outdoor rugs help define the outdoor space, in addition to bringing that indoorhomey feeling outside.

“When it comes to decorating, it’s all about layering,” she adds. “If you’re using a certaincolor palette inside, bring it on outside.”

Blailock suggests hanging outdoor chandeliers and lights in loggias and porches. It under-scores the coziness of the space and keeps it visually interesting.

Interior Designer Kelly Amen (a participating designer for the ASID showhouse also featuredin this issue) points to “comfort” as being the number one essential element for outdoor living.

Because space is sometimes limited, it is advisable to consider “multi-tasking seating – andselecting tables that accommodate dining and can function as an occasional or cocktail table.”Smaller details count, he says. “It’s the personal pieces or collections that belong to the residentthat make the space feel peaceful and familiar.”

When designing the space, he suggests the seating area should face the kitchen so thechef/cook can interact with guests.

VENDOR PICKS & IDEASMike Logan, owner of Texas PitCrafters, says the must-havesamong his clientele are “morehigh BTU burners for skillets andpots, in addition to stainless steelkitchen islands and wood-firedpizza ovens.

He calls the pizza ovens the“ultimate cooking asset.” Theyrange in price from $7,500 to$25,000.

Logan says that Houston resi-dents are fortunate in that theycan utilize their outdoor kitcheninvestments just about year-round.

“My clients are putting insophisticated audio/visual systemswith two to three TVs, premiumspeakers, and a control unit forthe equipment – separate fromwhat’s in the main house,” saysWayne Franks, owner of OutdoorHomescapes.

Franks says clients also ask forexterior fan and light controlswith dimmers, in addition toUSB ports to accommodate“smart” computer and phonedevices. A hot item for wintermonths: ceiling heaters.

When roofing the outdoor liv-ing space, Franks says clients liketo match the main house. Andthey tend to like having a raisedbar at the kitchen, where guestscan sit and watch the cooks.

LIGHT IT UPLighting guru Sarah Gandy, co-owner of Gandy2 Lighting Design, sug-gests, “using more small fixtures versus one large bright one that can cre-ate glare. Sprinkling small amounts of lighting throughout the landscapealso looks better visually.”

Gandy steers clients away from bright overhead lighting, as it can beuncomfortable and unflattering when sitting underneath. “Look at otheropportunities, such as up-lighting in landscapes, wall sconces, accentlighting on architectural elements and pathways.

Cost-effective LED lights spotlight more landscapes these days thanother types, says Gandy. Even existing fixtures can be re-lamped to reapthe benefits of lower wattage use.

John Dailey, owner at Robert Huff Landscape Illuminations, saysoutdoor lighting offers practical benefits. “Good lighting on steps, walk-ways and driveways help prevent accidents.

He also advises that a little light goes a long way, so avoid “over light-ing.” And aim lights so they do not shine into a neighbor’s windows.

One key item has been missing in outdoor living rooms: A TVthat can withstand the elements. New technology is changingthat. Fully sealed Ciil TVs from Peerless-AV are the first flat-screen panels to have no seams and no external electricalcomponents. The TVs can withstand weather as cold asminus-40 degrees, in addition to ice and snow. The weathercan soar up to 140 degrees without effect. Additionally, newwireless delivery makes it possible to beam movies and othercontent to outdoor TVs without cabling.

What advice can you share onhow to sell homes quickly? A seller's home should be wellmaintained, clean, and free ofclutter with lights on and windowcoverings open.....and priced in the zone of other comparable homes.

What’s one thing you would tell homeowners who are ready to puttheir home on the market? Look at your home like a buyer would.

What do you do that other agents may not to ensure a seller gets topdollar? I go through the home and advise on staging and editing the homeso it shows the best. I also see the competitive homes so I have an edgeon the benefits or negatives of the other homes.

Where are the hottest markets in the Houston area? Areas that havetrees, amenities, good schools or are close in.

Which area of Houston is your specialty? Irepresent sellers and buyers in all parts of thecity but my emphasis is on the Inner Loop andNear Inner Loop neighborhoods. SpecificallyTimbergrove, Lazybrook, Houston Heights, OakForest, Garden Oaks, Midtown to name a few.

What advice can you share on how to sellhomes quickly? Homes have been in hugedemand over the past several months but in order to receive a high saleprice or multiple offers, it is still important to price the home correctly; have itprofessionally cleaned and de-cluttered, and repair obvious maintenanceissues.

What’s one thing you would tell homeowners who are ready to puttheir home on the market? Selling a home often involves buying one too,so it is important to understand that timing the sale and the purchase of anew home is critical. Have a plan in place for your new home purchase and,if needed, temporary housing until a new home can be purchased. This mar-ket is very competitive and many homes go under contract within the first 24to 48 hours so the exit strategy is just as important as the marketing strategy.

What do you do that other agents may not to ensure a seller gets topdollar? I provide all of my listings with an in-home consultation, professionalphotos, a customized marketing plan, and a 24 hr. 1-800 information line --complete with virtual tour. I post the listing on multiple Web sites that allowbuyers viewing access from the source they like to use for home searches.

Where are the hottest markets in the Houston area? Houston's realestate market is experiencing a lot of activity in all areas. However a few ofthe hottest neighborhoods/areas are Houston Heights, Inner Loop 610, NearInner Loop, Midtown, Energy Corridor and the Medical Center.

Caroline Schlemmer, Greenwood King Properties713.864.0888www.carolineschlemmer.comWhich area of Houston is your specialty?Houston’s close-in neighborhoods including TheHeights, River Oaks, West University, Bellaire, and Memorial.

What advice can you share on how to sellhomes quickly? I work extensively with myclients to make sure their home is ready forshowings and provide an in-depth market analy-sis to ensure that the house is priced appropriately. Taking time before youput your home on the market can make a big difference to your bottom line.

What’s one thing you would tell homeowners who are ready to put theirhome on the market? Call me!

What do you do that other agents may not to ensure a seller gets topdollar? I provide an extensive marketing campaign for all my listings that isin writing. Additionally, I manage the process from beginning to closing toensure that we get the most money we can for a property AND we get toclosing. In the current market, a buyer can offer you a high sales price, but itmeans nothing if they can’t get to the closing table. I work very closely withmy clients, the other agent, the title company and all other parties to thetransaction to ensure we are hitting the milestones we should to get theproperty closed.

Where are the hottest markets in the Houston area? All of the close-inneighborhoods in Houston have always been desirable neighborhoods, butwe are seeing them take off like we haven’t in the past. The low inventorylevels are causing prices to continue to rise. Buyers should be prepared formultiple offers in many instances.

When 19 interior designers come together to collaboratewith building craftsmen and specialized artisans to createone luxurious Tuscan villa, every detail is magnified in

distinction. This year’s American Society of Interior Designers (ASID)-Texas

Gulf Coast Chapter’s show house, dubbed by organizers as “VillaFontana,” certainly proves grand in size at 6,682-square-feet as wellas impressive in its architecture and design.

The sprawling stucco and stone home, adorned with a character-

istic red adobe roof, certainly gives way to a Mediterranean style butwith New-World influences.

“Our goal is always to provide the ultimate in design and conven-ience for our home buyers, but the extraordinary quality associatedwith ASID-Texas Gulf Coast Chapter set the bar even higher,” saysD.C. Peterson, custom builder with Teramor Homes.

Peterson and his Teramor colleague, Ken Alexander, chose crafts-man from the Fort Bend County area, particularly since VillaFontana is located in Sugar Land’s Riverstone community.

VILLA FONTANACOUPLE TURNS TO ASID MEMBERS TO CREATE THEIR DREAM HOME

The show house was the first to have owners involved at the start. The couple, Rodney and Tiffany Winker, purchased the lakefrontproperty in the gated enclave of Ivy Bend in November of 2011. For almost a year, the newlyweds worked with Patrick Berrios of

Berrios Design to put their vision of an Italian farmhouse on paper. Interior Designer Kelly Gale Amen says he and his colleagues cer-

tainly wanted to spotlight their strengths and various talents in theWinkler’s home for public viewing, but they each also “wanted to tapinto the couple’s memories of travels throughout Europe and Africa.”

“The designers really came up with valuable solutions,” saysRodney Winkler. “For instance, I wanted built-ins along one wall inmy study, but we have three high windows, so how do you dothat?”

Designer Teena Caldwell, owner of the boutique furniture storeat Twenty-Two Fifty Interiors, devised a shelving and design thatWinkler calls “just perfect.”

The Winklers say the designers and other professionals involvedhelped their dream home come true. Tour Hightlights:

Into theFoyer andGreat Room

Designer Jason Broughton wanted tocreate a space that “greeted guests withopen arms.” He arranged for displaysin the foyer and upstairs landing toshow family photos, artwork and selectfurnishings. He selected a neutral colorpalette to create a connecting cohesive-ness but enlivened it all with touches ofcolor.

Designer Sharon Staley wanted thegreat room to host family gatheringsand to reflect the rustic ambiancefound in elegant Italian countryhomes. She chose a tailored sectionalsofa by Kravet, selecting a coral colorfound in other parts of the home forthe fabric. A table bench provides extraseating, if needed, and a large tradi-tional rug anchored the space.

The KitchenDesigner Donna Vining envisioned giving the Winklers a “cook’sdream.” Custom cabinetry and opulent granite countertops comple-ment the room’s stunning two-story stone chimney and reclaimedwood floors. The space flows seamlessly into the homes’ great room.

“When I told Rodney I wanted a two-story kitchen, he thoughtI was crazy,” says Tiffany Winkler. “But I like the openness of it.And since everyone gathers there, the architect ended up designingthe entire house around the kitchen.”

The Family LoungeDesigner Blake Woods says when asked to select a room to design,he opted for the “game room,” located off the great room. He sug-gested turning the space into one where the couple could cozy up forTV viewing and also enjoy more intimate conversations with guests.

“The home owners’ love of Tuscany set the tone for the colorpalette. We decided rich earthy colors with accents of red andorange. The wall color I chose is Sherwin Williams, Tavern Taupe(SW7058). I chose a dark patterned carpet to complement the dark,hand-scraped wood floors. “

Designer Blake Woods chose alively color and patternpalette for what he dubbedthe family lounge. ‘It wasimportant to pick washable,family-friendly andpreshrunk fabrics,” he says.(photo by Michael Hunter)

How do your clients' tastes or personalities influence design projects? Each client brings their own flavor to the design process: styles or colors they are drawnto, needs they have for each space to make it the most successful for them.

What's the first thing you ask a client when starting a project? What isthe most important thing you wish to accomplish?

What initially drew you to interior design? My father owned successful furni-ture stores here in Houston and was also president of the Furniture Association, so Igrew up in the industry, sharing my father’s passion for quality design.

How can a potential client know if a particular designer is a good fit fortheir project? A client will know they’ve found the right designer for them when theyfeel truly “heard”. A good designer listens to what the client wants and applies her talent, knowledge & experience toward making a space tailor-made for the client.

Diana S. Walker Interior Design713.520.1775dwalkerdesign@sbcglobal.netdianaswalkerinteriordesign.netWhat is your design philosophy? Most peoplehave a strong concept of what they want at thebeginning of a project. I maintain project focus sothat their vision is realized.

How do your clients' tastes or personalitiesinfluence design projects? I am happiest when I can contribute to theproject, and make their concept better than even they considered possible. The collaborative process is my specialty. I like to see the joy on some-one's face when I bring them the perfect solution they couldn't articulate.

What's the first thing you ask a client when starting a project? What experiences have they had with other professionals and was that agood experience? If they haven't worked with a designer or an architect, ora builder, then I can set the standard of what they can expect.

What initially drew you to interior design? A friend who saw all I haddone for her over the years, and encouraged me to seek this career path.

How can a potential client know if a particular designer is a good fitfor their project? Ask questions! Can they relate comfortably at the firstor second meeting? Do they agree with each other about concepts andstyle? Talk to their other clients? Do you agree with their process, theirlevel of expertise for your project, and understand their fees? Do you havea gut feeling that makes you hesitate?

The Guest RoomsDesigner Lynne Jones says she wanted to go with “an African vibe” forone of the three guest rooms. That was the thought process behind allart, which included having the artist paint directly on the walls in thevanity area, in addition to an exciting backdrop attached just behindthe headboard. “It’s all mostly non color, but the room offers a lot oftexture, which I think is key!”

Designer Deborah Rivera says for the in-law/guest suite, she selectedfour different patterned fabrics that work together. I love it when thereis visual impact in a room. In order to achieve this, I used a few over-sized items such as the upholstered headboard; the gilded mirror placedon top of a modern yet rustic desk, and by stacking the antiqued printsvertically. All this adds scale to the room.”

Designer Laurie Coton did the third guest room. Her main goalcentered around the room ultimately transitioning into a space suitedto a growing child. She chose timeless wood pieces and a painted head-board to set the stage.

Additional ASID designers and their spaces: Angela Lee, nursery;Teena Caldwell, study; Keron Weathered, exercise room; Kelly GaleAmen, loggia and outdoor spaces; Donna Jarnigan, breakfast room andpower bath; Lone Star College team: Kelly Barry with Julie Kuney, LilyPowell and Jessica Viera, mail center and utility; Sydney EliseGreenwalt, garages.

ABOVE: Because the homeowners enjoyed a recent trip to Africa -- and wanted theirhome to reflect some memories of their experiences there -- Interior Designer Lynne T.Jones hired local artist Stacy Hosrich to create a magnificent painting. Lynne placed thelarge piece of canvas art behind the headboard for grand effects. The night table iscomprised of old stacked luggage.

With summer upon us, our gardens and natural areas are popping withcheerful flowers known as the Malvaceae, plants in the hibiscus family.

Mention “hibiscus” and most of us immediately think of the tropi-cal rainbow-hued flowers gracing nearly every poolside and patio: theChinese hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis). It also conjures up moretemperate garden favorites, such as rose-of-Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus)and rose-mallow (Hibiscus moscheutos).

All of the aforementioned are being constantly reinvented byhybridizers every year in order to bring in something “new” to ourgardens . . . . They are all lovely, and I could wax poetic about them, but my goal here is to lead you into more adventurous territory.

Let’s look at a trio of up-and-comers in our nursery trade that areactually adapted to very harsh, hot and dry conditions, while stilllooking as fresh as a new dollar bill (more on that later).Additionally, these are all very useful, small-space shrubs, maturing toabout 3-foot tall by 3-foot wide, which happen to be native to Texas.

First on my list is the apricot mallow (Sphaeralcea incana) withdelightful, gray felt-like foliage resembling little oak leaves. In mid-spring it covers itself with perky bright-orange flowers and continuesthis display sporadically through November. Give it full sun andwell-drained soil -- and water sparingly once established.

Next, Texas rock rose, Pavonia lasiopetala, produces an abundanceof charming 1-inch rich pink flowers from late spring right up tofrost. Butterflies love it. Cut it back if it gets too leggy, and it willquickly surge back and flower even stronger.

Lastly, Hibiscus martianus, the heartleaf rosemallow, sports attrac-tive downy foliage that is the backdrop for shocking red, 3-inch to 4-inch wide flowers from spring through autumn. It grows and flowersin sun or light shade but, like its cousins, will lose its compact shapeand eventually die if it is kept too moist.

We will no doubt be revisiting the hibiscus family in the future, asthere are over 5,000 species worldwide, ranging from creeping herba-ceous perennials to colossal tropical trees topping out beyond 200-feettall. In addition to immense ornamental value, this family is the sourceof cotton, balsa, okra, cocoa and cola nuts. Imagine life without choco-late and cola drinks—or the dollar bills to buy them with, as ournational currency is predominantly made of cotton fiber, not paper.

Keep on Growing!

"G' day, mate!" My Labrador ancestors areoriginally from Newfoundland andLabrador, Canada. The Canuck inme comes through in my personali-ty. Think Mike Myers—without thewigs and costumes. I've got spunk,am energetic and love to go onwalks. Because I'm so well-behaved,I am perfectly suited for dog parksand would love to hang out with you while you grab a brewski atBoneyard Dog Park and Drinkery. I've got all kinds of fun ideasfor us! All that's missing is you. HSPCA is open seven days aweek, so stop in and meet me. I'll be waiting. – by Robert Coplin

Editor's Note: Robert is HH&H's own dog whisperer. Thanks to hisability to give the SPCA pets a personality, the organization reportsmost of the featured dogs and cats get placed. And that's really greatnews. Thank you everyone!
