07 June 2017 No 18 From the Principal… Dear Parents/Carers As we all know, regular and punctual attendance at school is essential to promote good work habits and to set a student up for the best possible opportunity for success. Currently, teachers are completing end of term assessment and finalising the results of student achievement for end of semester Report Cards. Therefore, it continues to be important for students to be at school every day, so that assessments can be undertaken so that you have a clear picture of the progress your child is making. As always, if a child is to be absent from school, please telephone the office directly on 4614 5777, or on the 24 hour Student Absence Line on 4614 5766, providing a reasonable explanation for the absence. BEDAZZLED NUMBER 1 The Bedazzled Number 1 was awarded on assembly on Monday this week to the class who consistently had the tidiest classroom across last week. Many classes were noted as having made a huge effort in this regard, in particular, Prep B, 3S, 5M, 6J, 2S, 2/3R and 4W. The class that made the biggest improvement however, was 5M! They were noted as helping out our cleaners in an extra special way by wiping down their desks at the end of each day.

Congratulations and Thank-You to 5M! The challenge for next week is around having the best behaviour during specialist lessons; Physical Education, Music and where relevant, LOTE. SCHOOL BANKING School Banking has ceased until further notice. When it is able to be resumed, we will advise. MEDICATION Please note that only prescription medication can be administered at school. All medication must be kept at the office (not in classrooms). Parents/carers must complete an ‘Administration of Medication’ form to accompany the medication and all medication will be administered from the office.

Positive Behaviour for Learning News

This week the PBL lesson focus continues looking at managing yourself and not others. Problems become worse when students try to manage the behaviour of others. They need to worry about themselves, not trying to tell their peers what to do. This can be promoted at home by managing how children relate to their brothers and sisters. Also when adults have conversations, children need to know that they do not need to know what is going on.

KC chose to have lunch with Mrs Angus , after

saving up her Gotchas and purchasing “Lunch with an Adult”.

Chaplain’s Chat! Last week I went down to Brisbane for a Professional Development day called the Generation Next Mental Health and Wellbeing of Young People Series. Each year, it brings together experts from across the country speaking about many topics on mental health and wellbeing. A theme that kept coming up across the day was how anxiety is increasing in our young people. Sadly, 1 in 4 young people aged between 12 and 18 will experience some level of diagnosable anxiety or depression. One speaker who spoke about anxiety in young people offered the challenge that we need to approach and try the things that we fear, rather than avoid them (and therefore keeping the anxiety going). We need to encourage kids out of their comfort zones and give them the skills and strategies to cope rather than avoid what they fear. The more we face the challenges, the smaller they become. A saying I once heard that is great is – we can see things as problems or challenges – when something is a problem, we can think we can’t overcome them, but if we see it as a challenge, challenges have solutions and can be overcome, you just have to find that solution!

So, this week, how are you seeing things as challenges and working on the solutions? Andrew Bell (Chaplain) Work Days and Contact Information This year I work at Newtown, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. I can be contacted here at the school by calling the main office on 4614 5777, leaving a message at the main office, or by emailing [email protected].

Wellbeing Week

From the 12th - 16th of June , Newtown State School will host its first ‘Wellbeing Week’. This week will be a great opportunity to focus on the important role that schools play in supporting the health and wellbeing of students. There will be a range of things happening in the school throughout the week for staff, parents and students. Family wellbeing is important for building confident, healthy and happy students. Newtown State School will be supporting the wellbeing of our families, by offering the following sessions: 13th June 8:45am - 9:45am: Strength-Based Parenting Information Session (Free) This information session will provide an opportunity for parents and carers to come together and learn about character strengths and how to use them to build a positive family culture. This session will be facilitated by Amy Cook, a current parent at Newtown State School, who is also a trained youth mentoring coach. 16th June 8:45am - 9:30am: Mum's and Under 5's Yoga ($5)

Kristy Jackson, from Moving Mountains, will be running a Mums & Bubs Yoga session from 8:45am in the hall, no

experience necessary. This a great opportunity for parents and

carers to take some time out for themselves - under 5's are

welcome. This session will incur a $5 fee, payable on the morning. Please register at the school office if you are interested in either session, as places are limited.
