City Council Approves Budget for 1996-91

Monday evening, June 3, the Petersburg City Co~ncil met for their regular monthly meeting at City Hall. Attending the I meeting were mayor Jim Fox, councilpersons Gary Collins, Donna Lyde, Chris Pierson, Paul Willis and W.T. Leon. Others present were city manager Jesse Nave, chief of polieeDaniel , Hlht)lc>'S'" and Lahny Webb, an Energas representative.

Top priority at the meeting was the approval of the City's budget

which becomes effective July 1, ' 1996 and runs through June 30, ' 1997. A budget in the amount of $405, 600 was approved by the Council. The majority of the bud­gets projected income comes from an estimated collection of $155,000 in various taxes and fees and $227,000 from water,sewer and sanitation charges. Most of Texas has found itself facing drough.t conditions, since little If any rain has fallen over the last several months. Just in Peters­burg, only three tenths was record from.January until May 25. At that time it rai!18d 4 to 4 1/2 inches. with approximately 3 to 3 1/2 additional inches falling since that date. mak­·Ing It difficult for farmers to get into the field aOO do what needs to be done.

No doubt the rain was needed and most were glad to see it corne. but it had been so long that what Qame has not exactly what was needed.

Of course. nothing ever happens exactly when it is suppose to or needed ' and even when it some­tlmes·does. someone Is"not happy.
