  • Each week, there is a moment in the service where we pass the peace. It is a form of ancient greeting among believers & we have found ultimate peace in Jesus Christ. When we greet each other, we are extending this peace found in Christ, to a brother or sister in Christ. In the early centuries of the Church, the greeting included a holy kiss (Rom. 16:16). Gradually the practice reduced to simply a handshake or embrace, though the holy kiss is still practiced in some traditions. It is perhaps rooted in the typical Hebrew greeting of the Lord be with you, with the response being, and also with you. (Ruth 2:4). All of us have many things on our minds during the week and as we come to worship, those thoughts press to the surface, distracting our attention from what weve come to do. If the evil one can keep us pre-occupied with these other ideas, his mission is accomplished. Greeting each other with the peace of Christ puts things back into focus. When we speak to one another on behalf of the Lord, granting Christs peace, the wholeness that comes from resting in Him returns. You can see that passing the peace is not a minor act of worship. - Dr. Dan Sharp
