We’re getting a jump onscheduling our fall calendar! The Round Top Antiques Fair is justaround the corner: Oct. 2-5. And wedon’t want to miss it.

As you’ll see in the Special Sectionwithin, the fair really spans six smalltowns; all located about a 90-minutedrive from Houston.

Friends who have a weekend homein one of the nearby towns, say some ofthe tents go up a week in advance, andthey swear by the old adage: The earlybird gets the worm!

I went up there a few years back andfound a wonderful French sofa for $60in the town of Warrenton.

I remember rounding the corner andwalking into a temporary stall. A ratherlarge frame of a man lounging on apetite looking but obviously sturdyframe caught my eye. I liked the French-designed legs, the gorgeous aging patinaof the frame . . . but, quite frankly, notmuch else. The man sat upright, and thenegotiations for the sofa began at $100.

Of course, I didn’t come preparedlike those in the know do. I had toreturn the next day with a rental U-Haul. Most who make the trek up to theRound Top area always go in a largetruck or pull a U-Haul.

My $60 ultimately turned into a one-of-a-kind $700 investment. I had myupholsterer reinforce the springs andready it for a long down cushion; all ofwhich was upholstered in a light greenpatterned linen.

If you’re planning to spend a fewdays, which you well can do, thinkabout booking one of the bed andbreakfasts there.

There’s the Vintage Round Top andRachel Ashwell’s Prairie, to name two. We’re featuring the homeowners ofanother B&B – Blackbird Farm -- intheir own kitchen on page 38. Theirrental cabins are sweet!

Country antiques can call any venue“home.” Check out the fabulous seasidecondo in Galveston by Avondale DesignStudio on page 48. I assure you, you’llbe inspired.

Happy shopping, y’all.

Cason Graye Homes Goes the ExtraMile for Customers

When Bryan Phillips speaks of his custom home building business, you often hear him say: Everything is open for discussion. Thisphilosophy underscores and drives each project, which focuses on

client-centric excellence that begins at the very first conversation and contin-ues well after the homeowner’s move-in date.

Phillips maintains the high quality of his homes by limiting the number ofcustom home starts each year. “We average starting about 10 to 15 customhomes each year. That number lets me manage the growth of the companyeasily and keep pricing reasonable,” he says. “Also, I have a qualified team ofconstruction managers and that workload gives them about three to five cus-tom projects to manage each year. My team and I then can give our cus-tomers the highest level of attention.”

The Cason Graye team distinguishes itself through education and profes-sionalism. Phillips earned the Graduate Master Builder certification throughthe National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), a designation receivedby veterans of the homebuilding industry who have taken advanced coursesoffered through NAHB. “For me personally, it meant I learned from theexperts rather than through trial and error,” says Phillips. Other members ofthe team also continually work toward professional achievement designations.

“Ensuring each and every home utilizes as many energy efficient productsas possible is important to my company as well as to me personally,” saysPhillips.

“My wife and I are building a home in Bellaire right now and, while she’sexcited about new flooring and countertops and cabinets, the features I’mmost looking forward to enjoying in my new home are the insulation, thewindows, HVAC efficiency and home automation,” he says with a laugh.

In meeting with clients, I provide the facts to help them make the bestdecisions. For instance, when you are focused on energy efficiency, you reap

several benefits. First of all, it will reduce the overall operating expense of thehouse, and everything—the walls, the floors, all the infrastructure of the home—will last longer with high-grade foam insulation, an excellent window package, inaddition to air-conditioners with high SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating)numbers.”

Cason Graye welcomes the ideas and desires of its clients, including the use ofinnovative materials. “We want to go the extra mile for our clients. If we don’thave it, we’ll go out and find it,” says Phillips. This attitude shows up repeatedly inall phases of the relationship.

While not a design-build firm, Cason Graye helps its clients and prospectsthroughout the design process. For instance, if you don’t have an architect, heworks with several firms that he can highly recommend.

Cason Graye provides a dedicated person to handle service calls once the home-owners have moved in -- to take care of all the little stuff that gets discovered oncethey’ve actually lived there. It includes access to the Cason Graye representativewho takes meetings with vendors and subcontractors in lieu of the homeowners.

Phillips got into the housing business while still at the University of Houston.“I took a job with a large production builder during my final year of college, eventhough I knew nothing about building homes. That first week, I fell in love withthe business. I told myself that I will do this forever. My dad had been in businessfor himself, so I knew I eventually wanted to own my own company. So, we savedour money for a few years and in 2004 made the leap to start Cason Graye,”Phillips says.

“When it was time for us to start a family, my wife had come up with the name“Cason Graye” as a boy’s name. Three daughters later, it was still unused. So whenwe first started out with the business, she suggested we use it as the companyname.” And that’s when Cason Graye Homes became a new addition to thePhillips family.

Recipe for ExcellenceWhile Cason Graye, first and foremost, dedicates itself to ful-filling client requests, whenever they look for advice in choos-ing their kitchen appliances, Phillips jumps at the opportunityto recommend Thermador. “Thermador has great pricepoints, saving anywhere from 20 to 25 percent over otherluxury brands. Plus they make phenomenal looking productsthat consistently earn top rankings,” he says.

The cover kitchen features a complete Thermador appliancepackage; the refrigerator is paneled to create a seamlesslook, and the range is a featured focal point.Thermador actually receives the Phillips family’s highestendorsement: Its appliances will be going into their newBellaire home.

Lighting connoisseur Jill Brown owns the little shop on the cornerof Ferndale and Alabama in Houston’s Upper Kirby District. It’ssimply called “Brown.” As you walk up the few steps to the shop --which looks a bit like a citified country store with a broad porchand large lanterns flanking the double doors -- and enter, you’llsee large evidence of Jill’s indisputable skill at finding the best ofthe best in lighting. Lamps, chandeliers, sconces, lanterns . . . youname it, she’s got it.

Filling the Rafters at Brown

an interview with Jill

Where do you find these coveted lighting fixtures?I mostly shop in France, Italy, Belgium and sometimes Holland. I rent a carand just go. I know a little French and can get by. I lived in Belgium whenmy late husband, Foster, worked for a company there. It was then that Istarted to send various kinds of items back to the states to designers.Luckily I could drive a stick shift and so I would get up at 3 in the morn-ing and just take off. It was then I developed a passion for lights.

How were you able to transfer your passion to Houston?Foster’s company had its U.S. headquarters in Houston, so when we movedback, I became one of Skelton St John’s dealers.

What do you look for when buying lights?I stay away from what’s trendy. Instead I instinctively look for and buy exam-ples of the best of the period. I especially like Italian Moderne and and LouisXIV and XV styles. I prefer to buy timeless classics that can be passed on.Approximately 70 percent of our inventory is one-of-a-kind. I bring my picksback home and have them rewired and reconditioned if needed.

This pair of lamps is a one-of-a-kind, custom-made example ofwhat Brown creates, utilizing early 1900 plaster. The shades areBelgium linen.

JILL BROWN

house& home | August 2013 | www.house andhomeonline. com18

When did you open your ownshop? The shop opened in ’06.

When did you catch the bug for col-lecting?It started when I was a junior in highschool when I started going to countryauctions in Ohio with my mother. Iwas mostly interested in pressed, depression and Viking glass. Later, Iworked for a department stores – inOhio, Texas and Massachusetts – in thegourmet cooking section where theygave me full reign to buy what I foundappealing. I don’t care for trinkets. Ihave an affinity for things with a pur-pose.

Advice to novice collectors?Buy with your heart and buy original --the real stuff.

When Denise Strittmatter called me to select colors and paint theentire interior of their home, I did not know that her husband Mikehad already checked me out on the Internet and looked at my“before/after” pix. He advised budgeting my services into their over-all plan to ensure quality.

Since they asked me and wondered what they should put in theirniche, one of the first things I recommended was filling in the dust-catching niche above the dining room with Sheetrock and paintingthe stair railing and spindles.

choosing paint colors -- thank goodness!”she adds with a laugh.

Denise was ecstatic that the changeswould be dramatic and done within theirbudget. She loved receiving my emailedphotos because they helped her envision thespace. “At first I could not wrap my armsaround all your suggestions,” she explains.“Over time, I came to understand that youreally were right about everything!”

One of her favorite changes was paint-ing the stair railings and spindles. “While Ididn’t have a problem painting the spindlesblack, I just could not visualize painting thehand railings,” Denise says. “Mike was the“steady one” who encouraged me to doeverything on your list. The change actual-ly made them “pop” and the stairs now looklike a custom feature. It was much lessexpensive than adding wrought iron spin-dles, which would have busted our budget!”

Another change she really liked involvedthe rug --and did not cost a cent. “Removing the too-small rug wasgenius,” says Denise.

Using a tape measure, I showed Denisethat because of the shape of the room, alarger rug would have curled up the backwall.

TIP: To avoid being an uneven triphazard, a dining room rug should be largeenough for the table to fit on top of the rugwith additional space behind the chairs. Myfeeling is with food and drink in a diningroom, why have a rug at all -- (especially ifthere is a rug anchoring the nearby livingroom.)

And would the couple recommend hir-ing help? “Trust the professionals! Youalways take the homeowners’ individualtastes in mind and base your recommenda-tions on that, not just your own prefer-ences. Everyone should budget for yourservices,” she concludes.

Once upon a time a floor was just a floor but no more. Now ground-up design is a common practice and options for the ‘fifth wall’

have never been so plentiful. As the trend continues for hard surface flooring throughout Houston homes,

area rugs are popping up underfoot in the city’s traditional, contemporary andmore eclectic arrangements.

This new generation of area rugs comes in brilliant and neutral colors, newmaterial combinations like sisal and wool, woven vinyl, and manmade materialsfeaturing a playful take on a classical motif.

“A wonderful rug can change the character of a room,” says Valerie Robertswith Dazzling Décor, a division of Roberts Carpet and Fine Floors in Houston.

“For homes with a hard surface flooring throughout, an accent rug is the nat-ural design step. It can define the space, provide warmth for a broad expanse ofwood or stone flooring, and stamp an imprint of your own inner designer,” shesays.

The newest trends include “antiqued” or washed Orientals in surprising col-ors, and at the spectrum’s other end, area rugs in shades of gray,” says Houstondesigner Pamela O’Brien.

Designers agree that rug selection is areflection of individual preferences. Hereare a few trends to watch:• Colors: Soft and vibrant blues and grays. Also spice orangeand yellow for accents.

• New designs use classic motifs such as swirls, damask,Greek Keys or quatrefoils, enlarged and set as a border or inthe rug’s field.

• Flat weaves add pops of color and are extremely durable forentries and kitchens while soft textures are still most popularin the bedroom.

• Rugs made of bamboo silk or viscose. Blends of fabricsoffering the plush feel of wool with a sheen.

• High-end woven vinyl floor mats in rich colors by Chilewich.

• Weaves like bamboo, Bouclé, and basket weave with com-mercial grade backing. Available in Houston at Kuhl Linscombin multiple sizes, shapes and for customization.

• Seagrass and sisals are environmentally green with naturalcoloration making it is easy to design around. May not be bestchoice for small children who spend a lot of time on the floor.

• Quality and good design never go out-of-style. Oriental,Persian, Kilim and Tribal are investments that pay of f with longlife and sustained beauty.

• Larger rugs, appropriate size for the dining table and chairsor for a conversational area.

She prefers the new patchwork rugs made from older, worn kilims that are cutto salvage the best pieces and stitched together in interesting designs. Sometimesthe rugs are dyed in vibrant colors like turquoise.

O’Brien has purchased several for clients and one for her Houston home.“These kilim rugs are a piece of history with a fresh new look which works well

in contemporary and transitional designs,” she says.Donna Jarnigan of Houston-based LacyBoone Design sees area rugs as a way to

tie together the clean, paired down look that her clients want.“For me, a home is much more interesting when it looks like it has been gath-

ered over a period of years, which also applies to rugs,” says Jarnigan.“It’s true that some clients are strictly traditional and others only contemporary

but the majority like to mix periods and styles for a collected look, like pairing atraditional piece of furniture with a contemporary piece of art,” explains Jarnigan.

Sometimes people are so in love with their floors, they don’t want to see themcovered.

“A couple I work with have gorgeous marble floors and the husband did notwant to cover them in any way, not even the stairs,” says Raquel Henderson ofRubin’s Custom Rugs in Houston.

When his wife slipped on the stairs, he changed his mind and the coupleordered a custom runner.

“We made a stair runner out of a tone on tone piece of carpet removing some ofthe elements and inserting a perfect navy that we used as a three-inch border. Itbrought the area together in a beautiful way which complemented the marble,”Henderson says.

“Now they say the once-dull stairway is a work of art.”Customized rugs make truly unique designs possible. Another customer, a pilot,

brought an element joy to the family area by ordering a two-color bordered rugwith a plane carved in the field, says Henderson.

What is your design philosophy? To guide theclient as they move through the process of change, taking the client and expanding their understanding of space, dimension and function in ways that they hadn’t considered before.

How do your clients' tastes or personalities influence design projects? Each project should highlight the individual’s needs, wants and desires aswe aesthetically and functionally increase the usabilityand sensitivity of the space.

What's the first thing you ask a client when starting a project? My favorite thing is to ask the client what they don’t like or want to embrace during this process of change.

What initially drew you to interior design? Color—its potential, impact and ability to transform both a space and a person’s point of view.

How can a potential client know if a particular designer is a good fit for their project? I think that it’s like a shoe—if it fits, so does the foot. There is a comfort and an ease in the exchange, process, and relationship as it unfolds. If itdoesn’t work, you will know very quickly.

The best time to buy a refrigerator is between now and October when

distributors make way for newer models. With all the options out there,

we’ve narrowed down a few top trends and popular models.

Among the newest features found on today’s refrigerators are techno-

logical upgrades, according to Celia Vrnak, integrated marketing director

of Factory Builder Stores. People are looking for models -- such as

Samsung, Electrolux and LG -- that have an LCD screen with productivi-

ty-focused applications or “apps.”

“The LCD screen is like a digital version of the refrigerator message

board. You can pull up a calendar, display pictures, leave notes and with

the WiFi connection, you can even check the weather or stream music.”

Digital temperature settings and new electronic controls are also avail-

able in many of the high-end brands.

“There are more options on the dispenser where you can preset and

control settings,” says Danielle Raper, showroom consultant for Ferguson

Kitchen and Bath. For example, you can preset the dispenser to pour half a

cup of water rather than a full cup.”

Vrnak notes that GE has a hot water dispenser with four temperature set-

tings from 90 to 185 degrees.

Jenn-Air’s new integrated built-in collection has four-bin temperature set-

tings – for deli, produce, meat and a quick chill-for precise control.

Refrigerators are also becoming increasingly customized and many people

are using refrigerator and freezer drawers that allow you to integrate them

into existing cabinetry. The SubZero B1-36UG over-and-under with glass

door offers large refrigerated storage, plus a convenient rollout freezer drawer.

According to Jackie Hager, showroom operations manager of Morrison

Supply, refrigerator drawers can go in an island. “You could have a beverage

center under the counter refrigerator for wet bars and game rooms.”

“Many people like to put produce in there or items for the kids; items they

don’t want in the main refrigerator,” says Raper.

Column refrigerators are also gaining traction. For ultimate flexibility and

customization in kitchens, Thermador offers the Freedom Collection fresh

food and freezer columns, in addition to wine columns. The columns can be

placed in areas where the home cooks need them the most.

For example, the fresh food column might be placed in a whole different

location than the freezer. Thermador offers 24-inch and 30-inch fresh food

columns; 18-inch, 24-inch and 30-inch freezer columns, and 18-inch and 24-

inch wine columns.

In terms of looks, Hager says Morrison Supply’s best selling high-end

refrigerators are either stainless steel or cabinet front and panel-ready, which

creates a seamless appearance. Whirlpool offers a white or black glass finish.

Lower- to middle-end refrigerators favor French door refrigerators with doors

opening from the center and featuring a bottom freezer drawer.

SubZero’s French door refrigeration is popular because of its look and the

functional benefits. SubZero has a new built-in French door refrigerator that

has two 18-inch doors so you can open just one door or both. Therefore, it’s

great for narrower spaces.

About a mile or so down an old Texas farm road in Ellinger, just around the cor-ner from the famous Czech bakery called Hruska’s -- well known for their kolachesand breads – and just beyond a swinging iron gate of roosting blackbirds, is ahorse barn that Joan and Jerry Herring call home.

The Herrings own Blackbird Farm, a bed and breakfast located only minutesfrom the small town of Round Top – home to one of the country’s most acclaimedantique fairs. Houstonians make the trek to browse and buy every spring and fall(October 2-5).

Whether the nearby countryside is dotted with dealer tents or nothing but tallgrasses and a rolling landscape offering some of the most beautiful sunsets ever, theHerrings likely can be found in their tree-house-like kitchen.

The galley-style kitchen dominates the 36-foot-wide by 48-foot-long room

“Our specialties are omelets and frittatas made with farm-fresh eggs, cooked toorder. We even have a little bell to ring as we announce ‘order up,’” she adds with alaugh.

“We also make fresh salsa with the tomatoes, onions and jalapenos from our gar-den. We chop up all the ingredients, add fresh lime juice and sea salt. It tastes sogood when it’s fresh,” says Joan Herring.

Houstonian Jean Hancock Chernosky decided awhile back to trade the country scene for a spec-tacular high-rise Gulf view. But after she sold the

family ranch in a town just outside of San Antonio, she suddenly realized she wasn’t quite ready to saygoodbye to the Texas Hill Country.

With her ranch décor and country memories allpacked up and piled high in three different Houstonstorage units, she had a thought. A very good idea,in fact. Why not transfer all the character and charmthat her former home-away-from-home offered toher new coastal get-away?

Could it be done? Apart from the obviousvenue differences, her past treasures and furnishingsdid lean more toward the traditional, and her new1,400-square-foot Diamond Beach condo inGalveston is contemporary.

Enter the interior design team that makesdreams and high ideals happen: Ben Johnston andKathryn Berardo with Avondale Design Studio,LLC. Not only did they exceed her expectations inthe end by giving her a charming seaside countrycondo, they went into the job with a strategy.

After visiting the two-bedroom and two-bathcondo in Galveston, “we began the process of goingthrough all her storage units. That meant we neededto unpack, photograph, measure and catalogueeverything,” explains Johnston.

“The drapery fabrics reflect the colors of the sea in rich teal for the public spacesas well as a soft aqua for the master bedroom.” —Ben Johnston

The 1,400-square-foot condo features an open-room concept. The Avondale

Design Studio team’s first take was to consider their client’s lifestyle needs.

Their directive was to take furniture from a former ranch home and transition

it to a beach community.

“We also evaluated what items would needrepairs or could be ‘re-imagined’ in a fresh way. Oncewe finished that process, we then packed it all upagain until we wanted to pull out what was needed.”

“After completing a comprehensive space planwith Jean’s treasures in mind, we collaborated withnumerous craftsmen to pick up select pieces. We hadthem make repairs, clean and refinish, repaint orreupholster whatever was necessary,” says Johnston.

For example, a dressing bench and vanity werereupholstered in gorgeous fresh fabrics and reworkedto feature mother-of-pearl trim – as a nod to theocean. Mexican carved dining chairs gleamed with abright, festive teal paint that again suits the beachscene.

Johnston and Berardo chose a color palette ofcream, gold and teal colors, accented with a warmorange and soft corals. They used more than 30 dif-ferent types of fabrics and trims to create a richly lay-ered oasis.

“Drapery Ikat fabrics were used as a bridge tounite the sea views with the design plan,” saysJohnston. “The drapery fabrics reflect the colors ofthe sea in rich teal for the public spaces as well as a softaqua for the master bedroom.”

The antique wool rugs Johnston and Berardoselected helped anchor the more traditional lookdesired by their client. They tied in the coastal look bylooking for certain colors woven into the rug designs.

“The logistical concerns at firsthad us nervous. But it ended upbeing one of our favorite proj-ects in that we were entrustedwith updating beloved familytreasures and finding them aplace in this beautiful and con-trasting locale.”—Kathryn Berardo

BEFOREWhere new furnishings were needed, the design team shopped all over Houston. At

La Maison, they found an inviting chair and ottoman featuring a straw base by RobertAllen.

They also toured the various town markets associated with the Round Top AntiquesFair. And they found furniture artisans to design and make a few special custom pieces, such as the living room sleeper sofa and coffee table.

Berardo says the project took about six months to complete.“Besides it being a rather daunting project, the logistical concerns at first had us

nervous. But it ended up being one of our favorite projects in that we were entrusted withupdating beloved family treasures and finding them a place in this beautiful and contrast-ing locale,” she adds.

300 ACRES OF ANTIQUES:

For those who love qualityantiques and high-end arts andcrafts, the annual Round Top-

Warrenton “weekend” is likened tobeing almost a religious experience forinterior designers, the most ardent col-lector and even first-time day-trippers.

The gates to antique heaven openon Saturday, Sept. 21, throughSunday, Oct. 6, for their 46th season.

Housed in barns, tents, openfields, town squares, and even a dancehall, more than 2,000 vendors fromacross the state and nation will offertheir wares in six tiny towns and alongthe country roads that connect them, especially Hwy 237.

Many of the field markets will beopen for weeks, although venues likethe Big Red Barn, the Original RoundTop Antiques, and Marberger Farmswill only open for the long weekend,Oct. 2-5, as is the custom.

Along with what’s old and beauti-ful, there are new venues, beefed-upamenities, and most important: Anoverwhelming selection of high caliberfurniture, art, jewelry, glassware, fix-tures, stained glass, footstools, clocks, and the unexpected find that hasmade aficionados return year after year

for this Texas shopping tradition. Lone Star Gallery owners, Sterling

and Kaci VanCoutren, are preparingfor their second season at Warrenton. They purchased the properties for “thefamily business” from Sterling’s uncle,so their ownership is new but nottheir association with the event.

“We are trying to balance theinterests of women and men,” saysVanCoutren. “We’ve got some greatdealers and a superb selection of furni-ture, estate jewelry, Tiffany lamps, andcertified Civil War artifacts.”

In addition to the buildingscooled for antiques and tents for vin-tage items, the family is offering anair-conditioned area with beer andwine.

“Women with reluctant husbandswill have a nice place to park them, and hopefully, the men will also enjoysome of the offerings,” he says.

VanCoutren says owners and ven-dors make a creative commitment tooffer the best of the best for this gath-ering.

The rolling hills punctuated with live oaks, post oaks and pin oaks in thepastoral landscape around Burton make the perfect backdrop for a simpleTexas farmhouse.

So when Dixie Kennedy set out seven years ago to design a farmhousefor her newly acquired farm in Washington County, she knew she didn’twant something fancy. If she’d wanted a more formal setting, she couldhop in her SUV and drive to her house in River Oaks, an hour and 15minutes away.

“I drew the farmhouse plan on a piece of paper,” she says. “It’smainly one big room because people congregate around the kitchen. Ijust wanted a big open space so people could all be together in oneroom.”

On one side of the great room, she drew a simple bathroom andtwo smallish bedrooms with ample windows to catch the pretty views.Having sold rural real estate for some 20 years in the RoundTop/Burton/Brenham area (and beyond), she knew the value of Texasporches and how very pleasant they can be when there’s acreage sur-

rounding them for privacy. She drew a large front porch 12 feet deepfor the front of her house and a 12-foot screened porch for the back ofthe house.

Kennedy specified 10-foot ceilings to make the relatively smallhouse feel larger. For walls, she wanted painted shiplap boards for a rus-tic look. And her front doors are classic Texana: two big, wide screendoors reminiscent of those at a sweet country store or dance hall.

Knowing exactly what she wanted, she turned her drawing for thefarmhouse over to a local general contractor, and her farmhouse becamereality. But it wasn’t quite all that easy: “I had to clear the entire proper-ty of underbrush before I could build,” she says. EYE FOR DESIGN AND REAL ESTATE

Kennedy is neither architect nor designer, but she does possess a keen eyefor design. Reared in West University, she graduated from Bellaire HighSchool and then moved to New York City, where she studied marketingand merchandising at Parsons School of Design. After a three-year stintworking retail in New York, she returned to Texas in the 1980s.

Living in Houston, she began selling real estate in the Washington andFayette counties, beautiful rolling farmland sometimes referred to byEasterners as “the Connecticut of Houston.” Many country-lovingHoustonians keep second homes there, as the area is a convenient, shortdrive on Highway 290. The area became popular with Houstonians in the1950s and ’60s, especially when Miss Ima Hogg and her good friend,Faith Bybee, began buying historic Texas farmhouses from the 1840s-60sand restoring them.

Kennedy started Kennedy Country Properties in Brenham and com-muted between Houston and Brenham. She enjoys a faithful following ofHoustonians who trust her to find the right country place for them. “I’vedeveloped a lot of lifelong friendships with people I have sold property toand for,” she says.

FURNISHING THE FARMHOUSE

“I wanted a relaxed and comfortable country look,” Kennedy says.Nothing is fussy or over-designed. Sometimes a country look can devolveinto clutter. “The knickknack look,” she calls it. There are no collections ofgeese in bonnets at her farmhouse; her furnishings and accessories are pur-posefully edited.

Furnishing her farmhouse was easy as peach pie at the Burton Café.Most of Kennedy’s furnishings are antiques she has purchased over theyears at the Round Top Antiques Fair and at antiques shops in the area.

LOVING THE COUNTRY LIFE

Enthusiasm for country living comes easy to Kennedy. “I’ve always hada love of the outdoors and gardening,” she says. “I like the peacefulnessand the wide open spaces of the country. I guess it’s the free spirit in methat loves it.”

An avid perennial gardener, she has landscaped the grounds aroundher house with perennial flowers from the Antique Rose Emporium innearby Independence. “People come from all over the world to gothere,” she marvels. “My sisters and I go there every spring and takephotos.”

When she’s at the farm, does she ever get lonely? Doesn’t she missthe city, social events and sushi? “You can’t be lonely here,” she says, smiling. “There are so many activities —the Round Top Antiques Fair, the year-round concerts at the International Festival-Institute at RoundTop, the Cotton Gin Festival in Burton in the fall.” For the last threeyears, Kennedy has chaired a barn dance fund-raiser, hosting 600 peo-ple at LaBahia Hall to help maintain the Burton Cotton Gin Museum, which receives supporting funds from the Smithsonian Institution.

“It’s important that people know you don’t have to be a cowgirl orcowboy to come to the country,” she says. “There are a lot of diversifiedactivities here.”

With the party-friendly farmhouse she has built, she has plenty offriends and family who love to come over and sit on the porch or havedinner. At a recent gathering at her farmhouse, a friend from Houstonteased, “Dixie, you’ve just built the world’s best bachelor pad.”

HI, I’M HITCH! I’m only ayear-old and I love being outside, running and playing. Some of myfellow Hound Cross friends toldme that I’m a pretty fly jumperand catcher. I really dig playingfetch, chasing birds and taking inall the excitement of the out-doors. It’s like doggy Playstation!I would make a great wingmanfor active dudes who like to hitthe trail at Memorial Park (youcould be the Starscky to myHitch) or an awesome co-runner for gals who like to run aroundRice U. Point is, I really need an active parent. If you’re single,I’m a total babe magnet, dude. And ladies, I’m a guy’s guy, sothe fellas like to come up and give me low-fives. I’m sure we’dbe a bigger happy family in no time. And trust me, I can keepup with it all. I only ask that you put the Hitch in your gid-dyup, stop by the HSPCA and introduce yourself. Please don’t get the wrong impression from the title – it is not a quotefrom Tina Louise of “Gilligan’s Island” fame. It announces a follow-upfrom last month’s article on gingers. Wrong impressions are rife in horti-culture, particularly with identification based on common names. In thiscase, there are many plants referred to as “gingers” that are not:

So-called “blue ginger”, Dichorisandra thyrsiflora, in the SpiderwortFamily, Commeliniaceae, is related to the omnipresent wandering jew(Tradescantia zebrina) that our grandmothers always grew. Blue gingerproduces large clusters of cobalt-blue flowers atop leafy canes from latespring to frost. It can reach 8 feet tall in light shade and evenly moist soilin summer. It prefers drier conditions in winter.

“Wild gingers” (Hexastylis and Asarum spp.) from North America andAsia are actually cousins to Dutchman’s pipe vines (Aristolochia spp.).Curious jug-like flowers appearing in spring are hidden beneath evergreenrosettes of handsomely patterned foliage. Plant multiple specimens tomake a charming groundcover in shaded, moist, acidic soil.

The greatest ginger identity confusion involves plants in familyCostaceae; formerly identified by botanical taxonomists (aka “stamen-counters,” and I include myself in this group) as gingers, recent researchspins them into their own family. Costaceae holds over 100 species that, like true gingers, are all herbaceous, form sturdy tuberous roots, and pro-duce lush, “tropical-looking” foliage. Brightly colored bracts and orchid-

like flowers, beloved by hummingbirds, continuously pop throughout thewarm months. Although frost takes them to the ground, they return witha vengeance in spring.

Trouble-free and fun to grow, costus relish light shade and evenly moistsoil that is not too wet in winter. Ignore their identity crisis and evokeyour own island paradise with these voluptuous stars:

Chaemaecostus subsessilis: bold fuzzy leaves hug the ground, providingthe backdrop for sunny yellow flowers. Lends dramatic flourish, especial-ly in a shady spot.

Cheilocostus speciosus – Crepe Ginger: large white flowers with rich yel-low throats pop out from wine-red “cones.” Can grow to over 7 feet tall, forms big clumps. Spectacular.

Costus barbatus – Red Tower Costus: Fiery red bracts and golden yel-low flowers look like they are carved from wax. 6 to 8 feet tall, full sun ifnot allowed to dry out.

Monocostus uniflorus – Yellow Spiral Costus: sunshine-yellow flowers onspiral stems 2 feet tall.

Siphonochilus kirkii – Nigerian Rose Costus: oversized candy-pink flow-ers on a 2-foot leafy plant.

Keep on Growing!
