The Hawks join Farragut in District 4-AAA, hav- ing moved from 3-AAA. “That rivalry is going to be a fun and healthy one that’s going to last for many years,” Rooney said. Eddie Courtney, FHS head coach, said “it’ll be a big night for us, just like Bearden’s a big night for us. The communities are so close to each other and people know each other. “On our schedule, it’s hard to believe we’re going to have another big game. … They’ll be some added attention to it just because we know some of those kids, and they know our kids,” Courtney added. Wes Jones, HVA head coach, labeled it “a great opportunity for our school. I know our princi- pal [Sallee Reynolds] is excited about it since her husband [Michael Reynolds] is principal at Farragut. The Hawks also begin another new HWWW rivalry, as Knoxville Catholic travels to HVA Sept. 27. CAK, two-time defending 3- Minute HWWW champs and two- time defending Class 2A state champs, begins a new rivalry with Catholic as the Irish move down from District 4-AAA to District 4-AA. That showdown will be at KCHS Sept. 6. About the Irish-Warriors new rivalry, Rooney said, “Those two schools are fun to watch. They have fantastic programs. Great following, great leadership, great coaching. “It’ll be fun to see which one is going to come out on top.” Rusty Bradley, CAK head coach, said he was “excited about it because it’s a new team that we’re playing. I think CAK may have played them back in 2002. “Obviously two schools being so close, it’s such a natural rival- ry, the kids knowing each other,” Bradley added. Nowhere to go but up in Admiral Country. “Coach [Eddie] Courtney told us we would be the

most improved team in Tennessee,” said Billy Williams, senior tight end/defensive end, about his Admirals looking to vastlyimprove upon a dismal 3-7 recordlast season, the program’s worstsince 2001.

Replacing strong anchors alongthe offensive line, four in all, whilealso having to replace workhorserunning back Jackson Fain, one ofthe state’s best kicker/punters inJonathan King and rebuild the sec-ondary are concerns for Courtney, entering his 18th season as FHShead coach — 37th as a Farragut coach.

Key returnees include Williams, senior quarterbackBryan Phillips and senior linebacker RyanGlintenkamp (6-feet, 205 pounds), who returns after“tying for first place intackles on our team” lastseason at 87, he said. “Ithink I was in the top 25for the district.

“With everything thathappened last year, we’renot going to dwell on it.But at the same time,we’re not going to forgetabout it,” Glintenkampadded. “Definitely seen alot of different intensityand a lot of differentmotivation for comingout this year.”

The Admirals’ spreadoption offense is pilotedby Phillips (5-foot-9,160). “I threw for over a1,000 [yards]; I think Ihad 19 touchdown passes,” he said. “I think I had fiverushing touchdowns. I know that near the end of theseason I was leading the district in passing, yardage-wise.”

Williams (6-foot-3, 230 pounds) returns after servingas one of Phillips’ main targets in 2012.

“Me and Bryan have been creating a bond, since thiswhole summer even started,” Williams said. “We’vebeen working out together and doing other stuff otherthan what we do as a team … we just try to build acommunication between us.”

As for overall offensive strengths, “Our receivingcorps, and we’re going to have a lot of running backs,”

Courtney said. “And having Bryan back as an experi-enced quarterback.”

Mitch White, senior running back/outside linebacker(5-foot-8, 205), will have big shoes to fill in replacingFain.

Jimmy Hillencamp, senior offensive guard (6-foot-5,290), is a key newcomer counted on to help fill a void,as junior Nate Gilliam is the only returning Admiralsstarting offensive lineman. “We need to get some depthin the offensive line,” Courtney said.

Phillips said he’s optimistic. “You’d think that ouroffensive line is young due to the fact that we lost fourout of our starting five last year. But at one point, all ofour [starting] linemen were injured last year exceptNate Gilliam, who is returning. So, Jimmy Hillencampand [junior] Drew Arnett and [senior] Andrew Saah allstarted at least two games last year,” he said.

“I’m confident with our o-line,” Phillips added. “AndI can handle the pressure.”

Courtney again will serve as his own defensive coor-dinator. His base defenseremains a 3-5-3 “stack.”

“I feel good about ourdefensive line and line-backers,” Courtney said.Among newcomers, “Oneguy who made a bigimpact this spring wasLandon Foody [6-foot-1,210],” Courtney saidabout this senior line-backer. Junior JuanAranda also is beingcounted on at linebacker.

Along the front, juniorBen Dunn plays very con-sistent,” Courtney said.“And then Anwar Al-Hussein.”

Senior Chris Farner hasbeen spending time at

nitro, or nose guard. “And Billy’s coming in, and isgoing to give us a lot of depth in there. He’s going toplay all he can play,” Courtney said. “And we’ll proba-bly take one of our linebackers and move him down tonitro. I’d say Javi [Rodriguez] will probably do thatsome.

“And we’re getting some depth built in the second-ary,” he added. “That’s my concern, having experienceback in the secondary.”

In the kicking game, “We have a young man, CarterPhillipy, that’s done a heck of a job this summer,” theAdmirals’ skipper added about this sophomore.

6C • FARRAGUTPRESS THURSDAY, AUGUST 15, 2013 THE PROGRAM

With its move to District 4-AAA and annual clasheswith powerhouse Maryville, next-door neighbor Farragutand West Knox neighbor Bearden starting this fall,Hardin Valley Academy brings backan experienced offense plus a hand-ful of top playmakers defensively.

Offensively, head coach Wes Jonessaid the Hawks’ strength is “bringingback about eight starters. I thinkwe’re got a good receiving corps, pretty senior heavy with guys thathave played quite a bit.”

Senior slot receiver/tight endJack DeFur (6-foot-, 200 pounds), atwo-time All-District 3-AAA hon-oree, “is our top returning receiver… an all around good athlete,” Jones said.

As for improvement, “I’m better at route running, that’s really key,” DeFur said.

Senior tight end Matt Brewer (6-foot-3, 215) alsoreturns. “He’s an excellentblocker,” Jones said.

Sophomore wide receiverChandler Viscardis (5-foot-9, 160) “had a good seasonlast year,” Jones said. “Runsgood routes and has goodhands. And we’re expectingsome big things from seniorChris Thomas [5-foot-9,175]. I think Chris is yourspeed aspect.”

With three returningstarters up front, “I thinkour offensive line could be astrength,” Jones said.Junior tackle Garrett Curtis(6-foot-2, 300), senior cen-ter Peyton Miles (6-foot,240) and senior tackle AlexOgle (5-foot-10, 275)return. Newcomers projected to start as guards are jun-ior Matt Howard (6-foot-3, 205) and senior Tyler Ruth (5-foot-8, 190). Junior Xan Witherspoon [6-foot-2, 240] willrotate.

Junior quarterback Nathan White (5-foot-10, 170)returns after starting all 11 games (5-6 record) last year.“Hopefully a year under his belt will help him mature andbe able to make a little bit better decisions,” Jones said.

However, Junior Haddon Hill (5-foot-11, 185) “is push-ing” White.

At tailback, “Ryan Ferguson [5-foot-9, 175] had a goodseason as a sophomore playing a back-up role,” Jones

said. “It looks like he’s going to be the front-runner. …But Jordan Jackson [senior, 6-foot, 185] and Cole Vincil[junior, 6-foot, 200] are definitely going to push[Ferguson].”

Offensive concerns? “We didn’t really take care of thefootball well,” Jones said about last season, adding hisoffense must “begin making big plays.”

Defensively, “We’re going to come out in a new lookkind of front … a 3-4,” Jones said. “We’re going to havesome pretty good guys up front, we’re going to have somepretty good guys at linebacker. Our secondary, it’s goingto take a lot of work to get them ready.”

Nose tackle Curtis “has started ever since he was afreshman,” Jones said. “Probably our best all aroundoffensive and defensive lineman.”

Brewer also is being counted on up front as oneend/tackle, while Howard “is going to see some action upfront,” Jones said. “You’ll probably see Peyton Miles rollin.”

At linebacker, “Joe Underwood [senior, 6-foot-1, 195],he’ll be our top returninglinebacker,” Jones saidabout his 2012 All-Districthonoree, who’s movedinside. DeFur will man oneof the outside linebackerspots. “The other line-backer positions, they’rekind of up for grabs [as ofearly August],” Jones said.“Elijah Lambert [junior, 5-foot-7, 170] is at one of theinside positions, but he’s intough competition with JoeReed, a young sophomore[5-foot-10, 200]. Jacksonand Joe DeFur [sophomore,5-foot-11, 205] are in com-petition” outside.

In the secondary,Thomas, a second-year

starter, “will anchor us back there,” Jones said. Senior cornerback Trey Branaum [5-foot-8, 150] “start-

ed about three games for us last season … we’re lookingfor some good things from Trey,” Jones said.

Strong safety is sophomore Dominique Amos [5-foot-9,175]. “We’ve moved Ryan Ferguson from outside line-backer to cornerback, and he and Chandler Viscardis aregoing to split time back there.” Sophomore Nick Buckles[5-foot-9, 170] will add depth.

Expected to handle both punting and placekickingduties is senior Sam Pendergrast (6-foot, 180), whokicked extra points and short field goals in 2012.

BulldogsBearden High School enters the 2013 football season

with some lofty expectations. The Bulldogs, who went 8-3 last season, have four of

their five offensive linemen back from last season andthose linemen are looking forward to blocking for one ofthe area’s top running attacks.

“We have three running backs whoare fast and really hit the hole,” saidBearden senior right tackle ChandlerGreer. “We’re going to run the ball andI like to open holes for those guys.

“We want to go out with a bang andwe can do that if we maximize ourpotential.”

Bearden has running back JoshWalls back and returners GriffinDeLong, Kole Matherly, Luis De LaCruz and Isaiah McDaniel, who willstart on defense, all featured in theschool’s ground game.

But one key newcomer will likely shoulder the bulk ofthe load. Malichi Horton, one of East Tennessee’s top backswho transferred from Morristown West, looks to be fea-tured heavily.

“We’ll pretty much haverunning back by committeethis year,” Bearden headcoach Brad Taylor said. “Wedid that last year and hadsome success.

“Malichi is very talentedand his mom got a job herein Knoxville and we’re happyto have him.”

Bearden enjoyed successlast season due to its bal-anced offensive attack andTaylor is looking for more ofthe same this year, but theBulldogs must replace quar-terback Nicky Frizen. Taylormay have his man in seniorXavier Johnson, a transferfrom Central.

“Xavier is good,” Taylor said. “He’s a good kid and he’sreally athletic.

“He’s learning our system and he’s doing a good job pick-ing that stuff up and I think we can be balanced.”

Johnson and Horton will be key newcomers but they’llbe protected by a veteran offensive line which includesGreer, senior center Ethan Griffin, senior offensive guardJosh Biggerstaff and senior left tackle Caleb Bartlett.

Other key returners include: Walls (senior, runningback/defensive back); Emad Aqqad (senior, wide receiver);DeLong (junior, linebacker/running back); McDaniel (sen-ior, cornerback/running back); Matherly (linebacker/ run-ning back) and Hunter Henry (senior, safety).

The Bulldogs have a savvy offensive line and skill at the

offensive skill positions. Bearden, however, must find somesteady contributors in the secondary, on the defensive lineand at outside linebacker.

“We’re excited about our returners on the offensive line,”Taylor said. “Our offensive line did a nice job for us lastyear and I think they’ll do a good job this year.

“[But], we’ll need to find more depth in the secondary,on the defensive line and at outside linebacker. Hopefully,we’ll have a couple of sophomores who can help us out butthey haven’t done anything yet.”

Greer and Bartlett likely will see time on the defensivefront but Taylor is hoping that their contributions therewill be somewhat limited.

“We would like nothing more than not to have to rely onthose guys all the time.”

Bearden, which was eliminated in the opening round ofthe playoffs last year, has a tough schedule that includesDistrict 4-AAA foes Maryville (Class 6A state runner-up lastyear), Farragut (which is looking to rebound from a disap-pointing 3-7 season), West (two-time Class 5A state semifi-nalist), Hardin Valley Academy (a newcomer to the dis-trict, which has made the playoffs each of the last fouryears), Lenoir City (which made a deep playoff run in Class

5A last year), William Blountand Heritage.

Add non-district foesSevier County, defendingClass 4A state champ Fultonand Morristown East andyou have one of the state’smost difficult schedules.

“In our district, you havesome great teams and sometalented athletes,” Matherlysaid. “You have to be readyand willing to go the extramile to try and be better.

“We have two solid insidelinebackers and at outsidelinebacker, we have a lot ofpotential.”

Taylor said that he’s look-ing forward to playing histeam’s extremely difficult

slate of contests.“I think that we should be competitive in our district and

hopefully, we can make some noise,” he said. “We’ll have todecide whether we’re just happy to be there or whetherwe’re going to win some games.

“Our district is tough but I think that it helps everybodythat plays in it.”

Should the Bulldogs make the playoffs; the road toCookeville also will be difficult. Bearden went won eightgames last season before falling at Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett.

“We had a tough pool [in the playoffs] last year,” Taylorsaid. “You had three teams that were 10-0. You had two thatwere 9-1. You had two that were 8-2 and one that was 5-5.

Maryville High School’s football team had to endure along offseason. The Rebels dropped a controversial over-time decision to Whitehaven in theClass 6A championship game.

The loss has been on Maryville’smind since December.

“That pushed us really hard andwe want to make sure that some-thing like that doesn’t happenagain,” said senior running backShawn Prevo. “We were probablykind of messed up.

“We should have played betterand something like that reallysticks with you.”

The loss might’ve weighed on theRebels but Maryville enters the 2013 campaign eager toput last season’s disap-pointment in the rear viewmirror.

“It hurts and it shouldhurt because if it hurts, it’simportant to you,”Maryville head coachGeorge Quarles said. “But Iwas really pleased with theway our guys handled it.

“They went out and gottheir [runner-up] trophyand they held their headshigh.”

Senior wide receiverCody Carroll is alreadyfocused on the task athand.

“The way I see it, it was agame and it was a loss and it was a disappointing loss ina championship game. But that one’s over,” he said. “It’sgoing to be helpful, hopefully.”

The football season is again about perfection for theRebels.

“We can score 60 points and still the coaches focus onthe mistakes we make,” Carroll said. “It’s always abouthow many times we fumble or it’s always about the inter-ception that we threw.

“We’re always trying not to make mistakes. If we lose,we don’t beat ourselves.”

Maryville went 14-1 last season against one ofTennessee’s toughest schedules. The Rebels’ schedule

will be tough again this season. It includes a seasonopener at home against Division II-A state championWebb. Maryville later plays at rival Alcoa, which has wonseven of the last nine Class 3A state championships. Then, West High, a two-time Class 5A semifinalist, comescalling.

“We’ll find out where we are early,” said Quarles, whoopens his 15th season as the Rebels’ head coach. “Weopen with Webb and they’re well-coached. Coach[David] Meske does a great job and he has a fine system.Webb runs a wing-T offense and a 4-3 defense.”

And that’s only the beginning. Maryville has District 4-AAA tilts against Bearden, Farragut, Hardin ValleyAcademy, West, Lenoir City, Heritage and WilliamBlount.

“Our district is tough and all of those teams have got-ten better,” Quarles said. “We know that we’re every-

body’s Super Bowl.”“We don’t have any cup-

cakes and we’re not talent-ed enough to just go outthere and put a jersey on.”

Carroll said thatMaryville’s schedule wouldprepare the Rebels foranother deep postseasonrun.

“It [the schedule] reallydoes prepare you to get tostate,” he said. “It preparesyou for the whole seasonand it’s good to [play]teams like that.”

Key returners for theRebels include: Prevo;Carroll; Drew Curtis (sen-

ior, center); Dylan Jackson (senior, defensive end); JohnGarrett (senior, quarterback); Tyler Vaught (junior, quarterback); Dylan Shinsky (junior, linebacker/runningback and Jaylen Burgess (junior, running back/line-backer).

Quarles noted that Garrett and Vaught are competingfor the starting quarterback position and both may seesignificant playing time — at least early.

“We’ll go with the guy who gives us the best chance towin and right now, that’s both of them,” Quarles said. “Ifyou were to ask me who the starter is right now, myanswer would be both of them.

“Right now, they’re co-starters.”

Webb School of Knoxville enters the 2013 football sea-son in search of its third Division II-A state champi-onship in four years. Webb also is looking to defend its2012 title but Spartans senior Todd Kelly Jr. wantsmore.

“Every year, we want to go undefeated,” said Kelly,Webb’s senior running back and safety, who recentlycommitted to play at The Universityof Tennessee. “Our main objective isto win a state championship and I’mreally excited about this season.

“When the season rolls around,it’s a chance to show how hardyou’ve worked.”

Kelly may have his eyes on a per-fect season but that goal may behard to reach. The Spartans (11-1in 2012) open with a tough game inMaryville Aug. 23.

The Rebels reached the Class 6Astate championship game last year and lost in overtimethanks to a controversial call. Maryville is a regular atthe Blue Cross Bowl and the Rebels usually win oncethey get to Cookeville.

Maryville may representa tough test but it’s anexam that Spartans headcoach David Meske looksforward to taking — andpassing.

“We want to play thosekind of games. Those arebig games,” said Meske, who saw his team put up avaliant fight against Alcoalast year and hang with theRebels two years ago. “Wewant to play those games.”

“And when we go there,we’re not just going thereto play. We’re going thereto win.”

Maryville is the first tiltin a tough schedule for the Spartans. After traveling toBlount County, Webb hosts Division II-AA quarterfinal-ist Chattanooga Baylor Aug. 30. After the first of twoopen dates in Week 2, the Spartans hit the road to facetwo-time defending Class 3A state champion ChristianAcademy of Knoxville. The Spartans then host defend-ing Class 2A champ Friendship Christian.

Next is a district game at Donelson ChristianAcademy, which lost to the Spartans in the state semifi-nals. Battleground Academy and Ezell-Harding bothreached the playoffs last season.

Webb closes out its regular-season slate with a

Thursday night home game against rival KnoxvilleCatholic Oct. 24. The Spartans’ final scheduled contestis on the road against the King’s Academy, a districtnewcomer coached by Matt Lowe, who guided Powell tothe Class 5A finals in 2011.

Webb senior Te’Andre Moore said that he’s lookingforward to helping the Spartans defend their title.

“We want to go out on top,” he said. “You put the teamon your back and [winning a championship] is a greatfeeling.”

Webb has a veteran squad that has been battle-tested.The Spartans return nine starters on defense and six onoffense.

“We’re lucky to have nine starters back on defenseand six on offense,” Meske said. “One of our strengths isthe number of starters that we have returning ondefense.”

Top returners for the Spartans include: Johnny Chun( a senior who will move to quarterback after being astarting defensive back last season); Kelly (senior, run-ning back/safety); Moore (senior, running back/line-backer); Brock Beeler (junior, wide receiver/defensiveback); Wrinn Alexander (junior, wide receiver/defen-

sive back); Robby Strachan(senior, kicker/fullback/linebacker); MatthewMelton (a senior, who start-ed at defensive back for thelast three season. He alsolooks to be a feature run-ning back this season afterplaying on offense sparinglythere last season); BrantMitchell (junior, runningback/linebacker); LiamWilloughby (junior, tightend/linebacker); AndrewCampbell (senior, offensiveguard/defensive end);Bennett Harrison (junior,linebacker); GageThompson (junior,center/defensive tackle);

Carter Thomas (senior, offensive guard/defensive end)and Dustin Nickle (junior, offensive tackle/defensivetackle/long snapper).

While the Spartans’ veteran roster leaves little roomfor impact newcomers early, Chun and Melton will lookto make their respective marks at new positions. Chuntakes the reins of Webb’s Wing-T offensive attack andMelton, who was defensive MVP of the 2010 state cham-pionship game, will be a featured running back.

“We expect Johnny Chun to manage the offense andmake plays,” Meske said. “Matthew Melton will besomeone who gets noticed at running back.”

WarriorsChristian Academy of Knoxville

When Christian Academy of Knoxville opens its 2013football season, it will do so as the two-time defendingClass 3A state champion and the Warriors will be the hunt-ed.

CAK head coach Rusty Bradley saidthat he knows that this will be a newseason and he’s working to put thepast two seasons in the rearview mir-ror.

“We don’t talk much about last sea-son,” said Bradley, who opens his sev-enth season as Warriors’ head coach.“This season is going to be a hugechallenge but it’s something thatwe’re excited about.

“What happened the last two yearsin the past and the guys are excited because it’s their yearand it’s their turn.”

CAK went 14-1 last season and won its second consecu-tive state title. The Warriorsalso lost several talentedplayers. Quarterback CharlieHigh and wide receiver JoshSmith have moved on toTennessee Tech and TheUniversity of Tennessee, respectively, and theirdepartures have left a pair ofvoids to be filled.

The Warriors, who openthe 2013 campaign Aug. 23 atFranklin Road Academy, return nine players from lastyear’s squad. Top returnersinclude: Patrick Dalton (sen-ior, offensive tackle); ZachJenkins (senior, center);Whitaker Cunningham (sen-ior, wide receiver); PhillipNichols (sophomore, wide receiver); John Broyles (senior, outside linebacker/free safety); Spencer Starke (junior, defensive end); John Zavracky (sophomore, defensive line-man); Billy Spencer (senior, defensive back) and CobyCampbell (a senior wide receiver, who moves over afterspending last season in the Warriors’ secondary).

CAK’s first order will be to replace High, who shatterednumerous records during his career with the Warriors.Four players are vying for that spot. Junior John Sharpeserved as High’s backup last season and had some playingtime last season. Others competing there are freshman

Cole Smith, senior Michael Sanderson and junior KullenWells (a transfer from Tennessee High).

Replacing High is a challenge but the task has been onethat Bradley has enjoyed.

“It’s been a fun process. We have four guys in the mix,”he said. “I have an incoming freshman that’s run our sys-tem. John Sharpe has been around our system for a while.

“I have a transfer from Tennessee High who is learningour system and I have a rising freshman.”

As for the players, they’re eager to get things underwayand leave their mark on one of Knoxville’s most successfulprograms.

“I’m looking forward to just being a senior and gettingthe younger guys motivated,” Broyles said. “We’ve learneda lot from some guys over the last two years and I’m look-ing forward to being a senior leader and pushing theseyounger guys in the weight room, and later, when we getout and get on the field. We have the system down but wehave to be ready to play every game.

“Last year, the guys werecompetitive and [this sea-son] we’ll do the best wecan. We haven’t had a lot ofattention but we’re going toput the team before our-selves.”

Dalton agreed.“It’s going to be exciting,”

he said. “I feel like it’s myjob to get everybody motivat-ed and I’ve tried to be a goodleader.”

Motivation shouldn’t be aproblem for the Warriors.CAK has a strong seniorclass, according to Bradley. It’s a senior class that hasstruggled to gain respectsince middle school.

“This senior class has been overlooked,” Bradley said.“When they were in eighth grade, they won one game.

CAK’s schedule will have a new look in 2013. TheWarriors play non-district games against FRA (a topDivision II program), Powell (the 2011 Class 5A runner-up), Webb (which has won three of the last four Division II-A state championships), Grace Christian Academy (whichhas made deep postseason runs recently), Belfry, Ky., andLivingston Academy.

The District 4-AA schedule remains tough as Alcoa,Kingston and Scott are familiar foes.

THE PROGRAM FARRAGUTPRESS THURSDAY, AUGUST 15, 2013 • 15C

Steve Matthews enjoyed a holiday dinner invitationand some pretty good quarterbacking advice from JoeMontana, NFL all-time-great Hall of Famer, duringMatthews’ five years as a back-uppro quarterback.

While at Kansas City, Montana“was outstanding, he had me overfor Thanksgiving dinner,” saidMatthews, Knoxville Catholic HighSchool’s new football head coach, who’s looking to rebuild an Irishteam hit hard by graduation.

But for all his NFL experience,Matthews’ biggest coaching philos-ophy influence is tinted towardUniversity of Oregon green andgold: coach Chip Kelly’s spreadoption “hurry up” offense.

“We’re probably one of the first [teams] to go as fastas we do in the high school game,” said Matthews, 42,most recently offensivecoordinator with 6A powerSiegel the past five sea-sons who is a former headcoach at Moore County.

“Off-season conditioningis huge for us. Ourstrength and conditioningcoach, David Ball, did anoutstanding job.

“Practices need to beextremely organized. Wepretty much have 44 guysgoing at once,” he added.“… We go as fast as wepossibly can.”

“We’re building depth. We practice everybody onthe team, they get a ton ofreps.”

Logan Irwin, senioroffensive/defensive tackle, said about conditioning,“We’ve had a very intense spring and summer, a lotmore fast paced than last year.”

Matthews “wants to get a play off six seconds afterthe [previous] play is done,” Irwin added.

Players required to play both offense and defense isa bigger reality at Catholic versus Siegel, a much biggerschool. “There’s some adjustments being made,”Matthews said.

As for run-pass breakdown, “We’re about 60 percentrun, 40 pass,” Matthews said.

Missing the Class 5A playoffs last season with a 4-6record, Catholic returns only “two or three on each sideof the ball,” Matthews said.

“But I think we’ve got some good players that we’re

trying at other positions,” he added. Offensively, “I think our biggest strength will proba-

bly be our offensive line, we’ve got four seniors upthere,” Matthews said.

Leading the way are Patrick McFall, senior offensiveleft tackle (6-foot-6, 250 pounds), and Irwin, right tack-le (6-foot-5, 235). “They might play some on both sidesof the ball.”

Others up front offensively are junior guard Luis Soto(6-foot, 240) and senior guard Dwight Jessie (6-foot-1,230), with senior Evan Nelson (6-foot-1, 225) as start-ing center.

Junior running back/linebacker Logan Lacey (5-foot-11, 190) “is one of those guys who’s a football player. Hecan probably play any position on the field,” Matthewssaid.

Overall, “Our skill positions are getting better,” saidMatthews, who has to break in a new quarterback.

Junior transfer Zac Jancek (6-foot-3, 170), son ofTennessee Volunteers new defensive coordinator John

Jancek, is penciled in asstarting quarterback. “Heplayed in Cincinnati lastyear, and he played receiv-er,” Matthews said. “Theygave him about two weeksat quarterback. His biggestweakness is just inexperi-ence.”

However, “He’s verycoachable … he’s veryintelligent,” Matthewsadded.

Defensively, Catholicwill feature a base 34 align-ment. “We teach run to theball, high pursuit, get asmany hats on the ball asyou can,” Matthews said.“We slant some out of that34.”

“What I like best right now is probably the secondary.I think we’ve got a lot of depth in the secondary,”Matthews added.

That unit includes senior Elijah Brown (5-foot-9,135), junior Tim Quayle at corner (5-foot-10, 135), jun-ior Jordan Anderson (6-foot-2, 185) and strong safetyJohn Mark Broussard (senior, 5-foot-10, 185). Each waspraised for “doing a good job” by Matthews.

As for concerns, “It’s a new defense,” Matthews said.“You’ll get guys blowing assignments and things likethat.”

Catholic also will adjust to a new classification, mov-ing from Class 5A and playing many 6A teams inDistrict 4-AAA regular season to Class 4A with power-houses Alcoa and CAK in District 4-AA.

When asked about his team’s strengths for theupcoming season, Lenoir City head coach Mike Zellerdeferred to a couple of his top play-ers during Knoxville FootballOfficials Association Media Day atThree Ridges Golf Course Fridaymorning, July 12.

“Our running game, I believe inCaleb [Wilson],” said Ryan Weaver,Panthers senior widereceiver/strong safety, aboutWilson, senior running back/defen-sive back.

Reacting with a bit of surprise atWeaver’s “running game” answer,Zeller switched sides of the ball.

“I think our strength is our defense,” said the sixthyear LCHS head coach who has breathed playoff lifeinto a program often foundstruggling before hearrived on campus.

“It just seems likethey’re a little bit ahead ofour offense right now.Playing solid. Got a goodscheme,” added Zeller, whose Panthers returnonly four starters on eachside of the ball.

Similar to SteveMatthews’ KnoxvilleCatholic Irish, Zeller’sPanthers feature a spreadattack offensively and a 34defense.

Overall, one key is to“just learn our system. Wehave so many new kids thisyear,” Zeller said. “That’s going to be the biggest thingis learn our system, our offense and our defense. A lotof reps. That’s the biggest thing we’re going to focuson.”

“Our offense is a little behind, that would probablybe our weakness right now just because we’re green upfront,” Zeller added. “… They don’t have a lot of reps.We lost four out of five starters last year, so it’s justgoing to take some time to get them up to speed.

“And we have a new quarterback. … We lost a quar-terback that started for four years. He just needs a lotof reps.”

Transfer Rashawn Tallent, a junior quarterback (5-foot-10, 160), leads the way among a handful of newPanthers expected to make an immediate impact

according to Zeller. “Our quarterback, we’ve got to get good play out of

him. Developing him is our biggest key offensively,”Zeller said.

“I think our defense has to carry us until we developthat line and quarterback.”

Other top returning talent includes junior JaylonWoods (5-foot-9, 160), a wide receiver/runningback/free safety who has committed to Butch Jones’Tennessee Volunteers; senior Lane Womack (6-foot-1,240), offensive tackle/defensive tackle; sophomoreBradley Willis (5-foot-10, 260), guard/defensive tackle, and senior Mason Sharpe (5-foot-10, 195), runningback/outside linebacker.

As for Woods, “He’s just a phenomenal athlete,”Zeller said. “We’re going to have to get him the ball. Wetry to put him in different positions and just utilizewhat he has.

“Other teams have tokeep an eye on him, sosometimes we can use himas a decoy,” Zeller added.“We’ve got a lot of otherskill guys that can do somethings as well, so they can’tjust focus on [Woods].

“He plays well on bothsides of the ball.”

Zeller also pointed togood health. “That’s goingto be a key, obviously. Eventhough we’re a 5A schoolwe don’t have the num-bers, so we’re going to haveto stay healthy,” he said.“Any time we have aninjury it really impacts us.”

Recovering from a bro-ken wrist during the summer, Weaver said he expects to“lead the team on the field and do what needs to bedone. And show the younger kids that haven’t played alot what is the right thing to do. How to play at a varsi-ty level.”

Looking toward his 2013 schedule, Zeller gave aquick one-word answer: “Maryville,” in reference to theperennial 6A state championship contender, while alsosingling out Bearden and West.

The schedule finds Lenoir City looking a few mileseast and west to begin the season, as the Panthersopen against county rival Loudon at LHS Aug. 30.

One week later, the Panthers host Farragut in theirfirst District 4-AAA game.

“Those two are huge rivals,” Zeller said.

Grace Christian Academy football head coach RandyMcKamey has one thing on his mind and that’s the Rams’season opener against Austin-East.

“We have to take things one day at a time and one gameat a time,” said McKamey, who willlead Grace Christian in its first gameagainst the Roadrunners at homeAug. 23. “I know these kids want to goundefeated.

“But you can’t go undefeated unlessyou win the first one.”

The Rams went 10-2 in 2012 andreached the Class 2A quarterfinals intheir first season following a two-yearpostseason ban. This year, Gracewants more.

“We’ve been working really hardand we’ve been going non-stop,” Rams senior fullback andinside linebacker Geoffrey McReynolds said. “We look for-ward to getting to the state championship.

“This whole team wants tomake sure that we don’tleave anything on the field. We want to make sure thatwe have no regrets.”

Grace may have all theingredients to make it toCookeville, and the Rams —as always — will be commit-ted to run the football. Theteam will, however, look tobe more balanced in 2013.

“This is going to be fun,”said Rams senior quarter-back Devin Smith. “Lastyear, we were 70/30 runningthe football and this year,we’ll probably be 50/50 andwhen you have a receiverlike Andy Eddins, it’s huge.

“He’s a four-year starter and last year, he was a leader forus, big time.”

Eddins is one of several deep threats returning for theRams, and he and others will enable McKamey to open upthe offense this season. When the coach arrived at Grace, the Rams billed themselves as “The Greatest Show onTurf.” Things have changed in recent years as a wide-openaerial attack went to the ground.

“We expect to throw the ball more with Devin and a solidgroup of receivers coming back this year,” McKamey said.“When I first came here, we were outmatched and it took acouple of years for us to get stronger so we could run theball.

“Our strengths [on offense] will be at the skill positionsand we’re working on rebuilding the offensive line a littlebit right now.”

Top returners for the Rams include: Smith; Eddins (sen-ior, tight end/linebacker); McReynolds (senior,fullback/inside linebacker); Bobby Dixon (senior, tightend/linebacker); Nathan Morris (senior, offensiveguard/defensive end); Nathan Silver (senior, runningback/cornerback); Heath Hatmaker (senior, offensive line-man/defensive lineman) and Kobe Kelley (junior, widereceiver).

Grace also has a crop of talented newcomers looking tomake an impact including a pair of brothers as linemanDaMarcus Inman (a senior who will be featured promi-nently on both the offensive and defensive fronts) and hisyounger brother, Kyron (a junior running back and defen-sive back), who transferred from Rockwood.

Other key newcomers, according to McKamey, include:Dylan Todd (a sophomore offensive and defensive lineman, who played sparingly last season); Clay Keaton (junior,

offensive lineman/defensivelineman); Robby Windham(sophomore, wide receiver);Rhett Elwood (a sophomoredefensive end who trans-ferred from Oak Ridge) andCameron Kuerschen (a jun-ior running back, slot receiv-er and linebacker, who wasinjured last season).

The coach said that hissquad’s major weaknesseswill be depth and some inex-perience on the offensiveline.

“Up front, we have someholes to fill and we’re piec-ing together the offensiveline,” McKamey said. “Asalways at a 2A school, you

have problems with depth.“I have 42 football players.”Grace Christian was involved in its share of shootouts in

recent years but that will change this year.“In the past, we had to score a lot of points,” McKamey

said. “But this year, we’re better defensively than we havebeen since I’ve been at Grace. We’re solid from top to bot-tom on defense and we’re not going to give up a lot ofpoints this year.”

The Rams have high expectation and hope to close the2013 campaign of Tennessee’s biggest stage.

“We want to go out on top,” Eddins said. “It would be likegetting a huge monkey off your back.”

A new sense of vigor is noticeably present around TheUniversity of Tennessee football program thanks to thearrival of new head coach Butch Jones, and the area play-ers on the 2013 Volunteers squad say they can see a differ-ence.

The Vols suffered through a third consecutive losing cam-paign in 2012 but Tennessee is looking to turn thingsaround in 2013. Two years ago, it was a sputtering offensethat led to the team’s woes.

Last year, it was a porous defense that was the downfallin Tennessee’s second con-secutive 5-7 season.

Jones, the formerUniversity of Cincinnatihead coach, arrived lastDecember and immediatelybegan making changes. Hebrought along his staff, which has worked togetherfor a long time and the play-ers immediately saw thingsget better.

“These are tremendouscoaches,” said junior kickreturner Devrin Young. “It’schanged here and thesecoaches have created a fam-ily atmosphere.

“I can go to any of thecoaches and talk to themabout anything that I needto.”

Young, a Bearden graduate, is one of three players fromWest Knox County who figure to see significant playing timethis season. The others, Daniel Hood (a redshirt senior, whoentered fall camp as the starting nose tackle) and KylerKerbyson (a redshirt sophomore, slated to be a backupright offensive guard) graduated from Knoxville CatholicHigh School.

All three of those players have been around sinceTennessee started taking its lumps under former headcoach Derek Dooley three years ago. Dooley won just fourSoutheastern Conference games during a tumultuoustenure that ended when he was fired after a humiliatingloss to Vanderbilt in Nashville last November.

It’s a new year on Rocky Top and the Vols are looking toerase the painful memories of three losing seasons. The lasttwo years, Tennessee has failed to make a bowl game andthat doesn’t sit well with Hood or Kerbyson, who profess to

be longtime Volunteers’ fans.“Before I got here, I remember watching the games on

Saturday and they hurt when I was in high school,”Kerbyson said. “Growing up here, I was always a Tennesseefan.”

Kerbyson was a high school teammate of Hood’s and theTennessee defensive lineman is hoping that the Vols canright things during his senior season.

“It would mean everything to me if we could have a win-ning season and make it to a bowl game,” said Hood, who is

playing for his thirdTennessee coach in fiveyears. “For the seniors, thisis it.”

The Vols’ 2013 defensewas arguably the worst inthe program’s storied histo-ry. Tennessee often lookedlost on defense last year. This season, Jones and hisstaff have simplified things. And Hood said he can see abig difference.

“We get the call and werun the defense,” he said.“We don’t have to makechecks.

“It’s a lot faster and wecan just play.”

Jones simplified the defen-sive scheme. He also hasadded an element of leader-

ship, which appeared to be sorely lacking last season.“Leadership is the key to every successful team,” Young

said. “You have your chiefs and you have your Indians andyou have to choose which road you go down.

“Coach Jones said that he’ll give you the answers on thetests, you just have to listen to him.”

When Jones arrived, he immediately set a standardwhere the players had to hold one another accountable.

“People are attacking everything a whole new way andnobody wants to be the one who doesn’t do what he’s sup-posed to do,” Kerbyson said. “The coaches have been workingtogether for a long time and they’re all on the same page.”

The trio of Young, Hood and Kerbyson are not the onlylocal players who will don the Orange and White this sea-son. Wide receiver Josh Smith and offensive tackle BrettKendrick (Christian Academy of Knoxville) will begin theirfreshman seasons.

THE PROGRAM FARRAGUTPRESS THURSDAY, AUGUST 15, 2013 • 21C

Before shedding some light on ButchJones’ Tennessee Volunteers Footballteam for 2013, Bob Kesling recalled alesson in humility as a UT walk-onfreshman fullback from Ohio in 1972.

It happened during the late stages ofa freshman game in Nashville againstVanderbilt.

Bob Davis, then UT FreshmanFootball head coach, “called up to thesideline, and he said, ‘Kesling, get inthere at tailback. I’m thinking, ‘tail-back? What a great decision I’ve madeto come to The University ofTennessee,’” said Kesling, “Voice of theVols” since 1999 in both football andmen’s basketball, as featured speakerat The Rotary Club of Farragut’sWednesday, July 31 meeting at Fox DenCountry Club..

“I’m going to score touchdowns andbe a big star in the SEC. This could nothave worked out any better for me.’

“And before I go into the game, Isaid, ‘coach Davis, I’ve got to let youknow I’ve never played tailback in anactual game. … Coach Davis looks atme and says, ‘[Heck] son, I know that, you don’t think we’re going to give youthe ball do yah?’” Kesling added tohuge Rotarian laughter.

“So, I got a pretty good idea that Iwasn’t going to be a great football play-er.”

About Jones, in his first year as Volshead coach after head stints at CentralMichigan and Cincinnati, “He’s comein and kind of revitalized the program, pumped live into it,” Kesling said.

“He’s brought a calmness to it, he’sbrought a lot of enthusiasm to it.

“He’s brought a work ethic to it thatyou won’t believe,” Kesling added. “Iremember the days when I was playing… if you did 16 or 18 110s [110-yardsprints], you thought that was a lotand you could barely make it. They did52 110’s the other day.”

As for evaluations, “I think Butchhas got to the point where sees the tal-ent. He understands that there’s a rea-son why Tennessee could not close outgames the past couple of years,”Kesling said. “So, you know there’s atalent level there, but there’s an atti-tude about trying to get guys [to win].Look how many close games Tennesseehas lost the last four years. It’s almostincredible.

“Last-second drives that you couldn’tcash in, or last-second plays that yougave up on defense, or penalties [suchas] jumping offsides. So many littlethings that Butch thinks are actuallyfixable,” Kesling added.

However, “Depth is obviously going tobe an issue this year,” Kesling said.“You’ve got to have great depth in theSEC.

“That’s where the recruiting comesin, and Butch is doing an unbelievablejob recruiting,” Kesling added about a2014 commitment class currently ratedNo. 1 by a few of the nation’s top evalu-ation publications. “Every single day itseems like he’s out getting somebodythat maybe nobody thought Tennesseehad a chance to get, which is a good

‘The Voice’ speaksBob Kesling talks 2013 Vols, Butch Jones and a

lesson in humility

sign. … They’re getting former players’sons that are recruiting other players’sons. Right now there’s a lot of momen-tum.

“He’s got probably the most preciousthing to sell that recruits want to hear:he’s got playing time. … He’s going tolose his entire offensive line next year.… He’s got playing time to sell at widereceiver. He’s got playing time to sell atrunning back. He’s got playing time tosell all over the defense, and that’s

attractive to thes players, and that’swhy Tennessee is getting so muchattention right now.”

Moreover, “He’s relentless in his workethic,” Kesling said of Jones.

Kesling also pointed out that a Jonesrecruit at Central Michigan was “theNo. 1 pick in the [NFL] draft this year,”which was Eric Fisher, All-Americanoffensive lineman.

“Butch has been selling that to hisrecruits,” Kesling added.
