GrAND KNIGhT’S MESSAGEA look back over the first half of the fraternal year there are many to thank. Over the

Thanksgiving Holiday the council and club opened their doors and enjoyed sharing a tra-ditional Thanksgiving dinner with the community’s homeless, those in need of a hot meal, and some who would like to share time with others. The parishes, with all their donations (270 cooked turkeys) made it possible for us to serve some 2300 meals, also providing meals for many the following day. A special thanks to St. James’ and St. Ann’s parishes for their continued support of the Knights of Columbus.

As we celebrate the advent season, the birth of Christ and bring in the new year, let us remind ourselves, as we enjoy our family and friends, of those who protect these free-doms. Let us send our prayers to those who continue to serve, and those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice and their families. God bless!

2012 is upon us and there are many challenges ahead. We once again as a council look forward to a very successful fraternal year. In the upcoming months, second half of this fraternal year, First, Second and Third Degrees are on the calender. Stay tuned to your Knightlife for dates and times.

In closing let us continue to live the faith, the love, and the dream!God BlessThomas J. GalvinGrand Knight

SPOTlIGhT ON: MEN’S DEVElOPMENT ClUb Of ArlINGTON, VA

by Norm Marcocci, EDW Special Activities Chair

From its humble beginnings, EDW has let many groups host a myriad of events, from family functions to fund raisers, and everything else in between. However, there is a group that Norm and EDW would like to take a moment to recognize. It is the Men’s Develop-ment Club (MDC) of Arlington, VA. Informal in nature, this group consists of fun-loving, family-valued husbands and fathers from the Arlington area who are involved with many civic, community, educational, outreach, and charitable endeavors. They also sponsor fun and meaningful activities for its members. Several of their members also belong to EDW. They meet there usually once a month, not only to socialize, but to discuss ways they can make a positive difference in the Arlington area.

As one way of showing their gratitude for allowing EDW to let them meet there, MDC collected toys at their Christmas Party at EDW on December 3, 2011, for the EDW Coun-cil’s Toys for Tots drive. It was a HUGE success! Nearly 20 members donated enough toys to almost fill the collection box at the Council Home Bar! Kudos to the MDC! Ad-ditionally, at the Party, those present participated in a gift exchange game of their own. For more information about MDC, visit their Facebook page at www.Facebook.com/Men’s Development Club of Arlington, VA. Any man in the Arlington, VA area who embraces the MDC principles is welcome to join.

Happy New Year and this year we’re starting off on a good note. Our brand new Columbus Club website, www.columbusclubevents.com has been launched. It has been designed to be user-friendly and contains helpful information ranging from hall rentals to menus to photos. Check it out; I think you will be pleasantly surprised. This new site should go well with our newly-renovated campus as well as getting our name out there to the general public which will ultimately increase banquet sales.

Our Columbus Club Christmas party was a great success again this year thanks in part to our Deputy Grand Knight, Steve McTe-ague for furnishing the menus and fine tuning the details, thanks again to Maria for the delicious food and Elvis and Nick for the great room set up. Thanks especially to District Deputy PGK Bob Dannemiller and GK Thom and Marijo Galvin for all their hard work to make the party a success.

At this time I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Ladies U-Knighted’s Jo Wood, Nanette O’Neill, Marijo Galvin, Meredith Dittmar, Eileen Onufrychuk as well as Mike Wilhelm and Dave DeLoache for doing such a beautiful job on the Council Home Christmas decorations. There have been many favorable comments coming my way. Special thanks to Nick Beirne for overcoming his fear of heights and risking life and limb installing all the outdoor wreaths and lighting.

Once again Breakfast with Santa was a huge success thanks to Mike Bauer and all the volunteers headed by Fred Bowles and of course Santa for making the long journey to Arlington.

Lastly, I look forward to a very prosperous New Year with bookings coming in on a regular basis, Aside from a traditionally slow January and February we are almost booked with banquets for March, April, May and June 2012.

rETIrEESWe would like to invite all of our brother Knights,

retired or just free on Wednesdays, to join us at our weekly gathering. We solve world problems, diagnose

all ailments, play cards, enjoy a libation and have a nice lunch; all this for only $6 including 50/50. We welcome all

to join us. Come any Wednesday starting at 11:00 am.

Thanks to Peter and all his staff for taking care of us during the year. A special thanks to Maria for all of the great lunches.

January BirthdaysJoe Broderick, John Lydane, and Becky Conrad.

January AnniversaryJim and Janet Walsh.

Happy New Year to all. May all your troubles last as long as your New Years resolutions and may your hand always be

stretched out in friendship and never in want. Please pray for all of our Brothers and their families.

Deadline for January KnightLife precludes usual summary on how New Year’s Eve-2011 went; details and “thank-you’s” will be in February KnightLife. As we enter a New Year it’s an opportune time to think of phasing out the “old” – me – and ushering in some “new” person(s) willing to take over the planning for EDW’s 53rd New Year’s Eve Gala in 2012. I started planning EDW’s New Year’s Eve celebrations back in ‘97 or ‘98. While not claiming to be “burnt-out,” I do believe it’s time, and that it makes sense to have others, younger and with fresh, new ideas get involved with the planning and preparation and to continue the long tradition of New Year’s Eve Galas at EDW.

It’s really NOT all that difficult, or involved. When you get right down to it the planning/preparation for a successful New Year’s Eve Gala can be summed up a few words: book band; promote/publicize; order tickets and decorations; set menu; door prizes, decorate, and have a good time doing it all! Please - contact me at a Council meeting or activity and let me know you’d like to do this. My cell # is 703-489-2856.

John “Scotty” Skotek presents check to Peter Kovler, Chair, National Board of Directors, Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. The $3000

donation is from proceeds of EDW’s annual Jim Savarese Golf Tournament, named for our Brother felled by the disease. Mr.

Kovler says “Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest and least understood types. Every gift advances research and supports

those afflicted.” All EDW-ers are urged to see www.pancan.org.
