Alley (L822-June 21, 1898)who almost 20 years earlier with Henry H. Rueter set up the llighlandSpring Brewery located nearby at Heath and Terace Streets. . Borninto a Dublin brewing family, John R. Alley cane to the U.S. in thelate 1850's and worked first in New York and then Providence. By1857, Altey was in Eoston and founded, that year, as a principalpartner with Henry H. Rueter, Roxbury's Highland Spring Brewery.,,After withdrawing from the fim in 188J, Alley established hisown ale and porter brewery just down Heath Street on a site formerlythe location of the Moses Day estate (see forn for 12 Bickford Ave.)Designed by Philadelphia brewery architect otto Wo1f, Alley'sbrewery lncluded by March 1885' the presently existing storehouse,brewery, and boilerhouse. By 1892, at the rearr a frame buildingwhich housed the wash room and cooper shop had been added. The 2-story brick bottling plant adjacent at #1I| Heath was erected aroundthe turn-of-the-century ahd housed a 35-ton refrigeration unit. In1900, the AIIey brewery was one of 10 Boston area breweries bought-out bv the Massachusetts Breweries co. (13-17 otis Street and94-98 Arch)

--a syndicate which included the American (249A Heath Street),Continental, Franklin (see Janaica P1ain survey), Robinson (seeJamaica Plain survey), Pfaff, and Elnwood plante. By this tine,the Alley branch of Massachusetts Breweries had an annual pro-ductive capaeity of 80r000 barrels.From the early I880's to his death, Al1ey lived in Ja;maica Plainon Sumner HiIl at J Rgvere Street. A]-ley's sons reuained activein the brewery business after their fatherrs death, and FrederickJ. became the treasurer of Massachusetts Breweries, Arthur H.,a purchasing agent for the c onpany, and George R. was superintendantof its Al1ey branch.
During Prohibltion (L92o-1933), the ALrey breryery buildlngswere used for wool warehousJ.ng and by the Randall-Faichney Co.--nanufacturerg of surgicalr veterinary, and medicaL equlpnent.In the late '30's and t40ts, 123-5 Heath street was owned byC anada Dry Glngpr Ale and housed the nixed uses of :-.: productionand bottling of carbonated beverages, manufac ture of medicalinstrr.ments, atorage, and offices. In Januaty L96O, llampdenAutomotive Mfg. Co.r the new owner of the building, was grantedpermission to block-up rooet of the windows r and the former brewerybeca.ne used and-ccttinues to function as a manufac tury for therepair, construction, and assembling of automobile parts.

fuapaoy, 31 Heath Street survives as a disEinguished example of Boston brewery
architecture. By the early years of the 20th century, 31 Heath was sold Eo
tureter and Company which owned and operated the Highland Spring Brewery
located nearby at New Heath and Terrace Streets.
Ttre Roxbury Brewing Company also is included in Ehe proposed Stony Brook
Breneries NaEional Register Dietrict.
