Our Principles

Page 2: 1 Environment

We want to work with suppliers who are actively reducing their reliance on fossil fuels and supporting those most at risk from the effects of climate change. We believe this means sharing responsibility and finding joint solutions to a global problem. Ideally suppliers and business partners will be continually working to find new ways to secure a low carbon future by using innovative processes to design new and current products or services.

Respecting and caring for the environment means protecting and improving natural ecosystems, protecting human health from pollution and extreme weather events and giving people fair access to resources.

We would like suppliers to abide by the three principles on the environment that are set out in the United Nations Global Compact:

• Supporting a precautionary approach to environmental change• Undertaking initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility• Encouraging the development and uptake of environmentally friendly technologies

To comply with these principles, suppliers should ensure that, where possible, in their own operations and supply chain:

• demand for energy is minimised and use of low or zero carbon power is prioritised• water is treated as a valued resource and is used and re-used efficientlyflood risk and pollution are controlled and extreme weather events can be mitigated• little or no waste is created through the careful use of resources and recycling• use of local, recycled, non-toxic and/or low environmental impact materials are prioritised• processes are planned, monitored and conducted to minimise any impact on the environment

Our commitment

GNM: • will ensure that we uphold these principles in our own organisation and will chose to work with suppliers and partners who share our values• are committed to efficiency in all our operations, through the monitoring of emissions, resources and waste• will work to ensure that our buying practices support suppliers to protect and care for the environment

Our aspirations

Partners:• will have programmes and projects in place, designed to minimise their negative impacts on the environment• will publicly demonstrate a commitment to action on climate justice. Recognise and address the fact that those least responsible for climate change often experience its greatest impacts• will actively seek to produce or procure 100% of their electricity from renewable sources • will continually investigate new and innovative products and processes that improve natural systems, human health and give people fairer access to resources

Minimum requirements

Partners:• will comply with all appropriate GNM and GMG policies and procedures• will meet all existing international and national legislation and regulations regarding the protection of the environment1 • understand their key environmental impacts and the impacts in their supply chain

Our Guiding Principles
