The giant panda is a large black and white animal that can weigh as much as 135 kg.

Giant pandas are solitary animals living alone in the bamboo forests of China.


Giant pandas live mostly on the ground but are able to climb trees.


Giant pandas are omnivores. They eat mostly bamboo but sometimes they will eat some small animals

including small fish.

Giant pandas eat a lot! They spend most of the time they are awake eating and need

to eat almost half of their weight in bamboo every day.


Bamboo is a type of grass with a hard,

woody, hollow stem.


Giant pandas, like all bears, have very poor eyesight so they find their food mainly by smell.

Pandas give birth to tiny babies which are called cubs. Each baby could fit inside a child’s hand and

weighs only as much as an apple.


Panda cubs are born pink and with very little hair. They are about 15 cm long when they are born

which is about as long as a pencil.


Panda cubs are born blind and helpless.

They do not open their eyes until they are two or three months old.

Cubs stay with their mothers until they are around 18 months old.

Unlike most other bears, giant

pandas do not hibernate in the winter, instead

they move further down the

mountain where it is not so cold.


No one knows how long a giant panda lives in the wild but in captivity they can live to be around

30 years old.


There are only a few giant

pandas left in the wild.

Giant pandas are very rare.

Today there are only around 1,800 giant

pandas left in the wild.

In the past they were hunted for their skins.

Now the forests that they live in are being destroyed to make space for humans.

Giant pandas are endangered.
