Unpaved Road
A First St. Rapids/ Sawyer Park (easy–moderate; varying lengths). This trail travels for several miles along the Deschutes River at the north end of Bend, and is part of the Urban Trail System. Bike to the First St. Rapids Park just off of Portland Ave. and follow the trail north. Turn around at any point along the way. Open year round weather permitting.
B Swampy Lakes Trails. There are numerous mountain bike trails that can be accessed from the Swampy Lakes Sno-Park, up Century Drive out of Bend. Riders can follow the trails to create their own loop. Swampy Loop is an easy 2.5 miles. Swede Ridge Loop is a more difficult 6.4 miles. Open late June–Oct.
C Phil’s Trail System (easy–very difficult). This trail system is anywhere from a 1-mile cruise to a 20-mile plus ride. To reach the Phil’s Trail trailhead, drive or ride about 2.5 miles west on Galveston (which becomes Skyliners Rd.) from the traffic circle at Galveston and 14th in Bend, until you reach a paved road on the left-hand side that’s marked with a bicycle icon sign. A half-mile down, the road intersects with the old Brooks-Scanlon Logging Road. Park in the parking lot at the junction where the elaborate system of single-track begins. Open May–Nov.
D Sunriver (easy; varying lengths). This is the only established network of paved bike trails in the area. It’s safe and accessible for all ages. To access, park at the mall in Sunriver and cross the street. Open year round, snow permitting.
E Shevlin Park Loop (easy–more difficult; varying lengths). Shevlin Park is Bend’s largest park encompassing 647 acres. The park offers many different types of trails. Tumalo Creek flows through the middle of the park. Open year round, snow permitting.
n Loop Trail: This 6 mile trail follows the rim of the canyon, runs through old growth ponderosa pine, including a few short, steep hills, and crosses Tumalo Creek twice. n Tumalo Creek Trail: This 2.5 mile trail follows the creek upstream from the park entrance to the southern end of the park, where it joins the Deschutes National Forest trail system.n Mt. Bike Trail: This is a preferred route for the mountain bikes, but is open to walkers as well. The trail climbs up and out of the canyon on the east side of the creek, and eventually links with the Forest Service trail system.
F Sparks Lake. Lava Lake, Edison Butte Trail System. (more–most difficult; 31 mile loop, 10 miles paved). This system of trails can be ridden as a long loop around Mt. Bachelor, or in individual sections. Riders can begin at the Sparks Lake or Lava Lake trailheads (both off of Cascade Lakes Hwy. 46, 26 and 39 miles from Bend, respectively), or at the Edison Sno-Park trailhead on FS Road 45 (4 miles south of the turnoff from Hwy. 46) The whole loop is a very long ride, so come prepared. There is a store at Lava Lake (open only during summer months) located at the one-third point on the loop, if you start and end at Sparks Lake. However, bring plenty of water, food, and extra clothing in case of sudden weather changes common in Central Oregon. For those who want a shorter but challenging ride, park at Edison Sno-Park and take the trail at the south end of the parking lot to Lava Lake (approximately 9 miles each way). Open Aug.–Oct.
Mountain Bike maps are available at local Bike Shops or Visit Bend.

Fun on Wheels
1 Pilot Butte State Park (easy/moderate 2 mile loop). There are two ways to the top of this 480 ft. butte, either a mile long paved road or a mile long dirt trail. Most people hike up one and down the other (beware of cars on road). There are spectacular panoramic views of Cascades to the west overlooking the city and the high desert to the east. Open year round.
2 Farewell Bend River trail loop (easy to moderate 3 mile loop). This is one small section of the Bend Urban Trail system, so pick up your copy of the Bend Urban Trails Map at Bend Parks and Recreation or Visit Bend, for many nice hikes and bike rides around town. Begin your hike at the Bill Healy Bridge on Reed Market Rd, in Farewell Bend Park. Park and follow the river trail on either side of the river. The west side of the river is the easiest. There are wonderful forest and river views. Open year round snow permitting.
3 Upper Deschutes River Trail (distances vary according to starting points). Deschutes River Trail system follows the banks of the river, starting in Bend at the Entrada Lodge, all the way into Sunriver, passing many scenic falls on the way. There are numerous starting points off of Century Drive on FS Road 41. Parts of the trail are open to bikers. For a great starting point on bike try starting at Dillon Falls and head up river to Benham Falls. Sections open year round depending on snow levels.
