FESTIVAL GUIDELINES & RULES for VOICE & MUSICAL THEATREStudents are encouraged to dress appropriately, with age appropriate attire and song choice(s), for their Festival competition or evaluation. All performance music must be memorized. Voice plus any instrument may be used for accompaniment purpose only. A piano will be provided in each ballroom for an accompanist. Participants/Performers must provide their own accompanist if using an accompanist.
Each participant's vocal technique is judged on overall projection, diction, intonation, expression, dynamics, breath control, delivery, stage presence, use of space and vocal interpretation.
The Hotel and MAMTG provide a sound system, including a CD player and microphone (hand-held or headset). Performers, parents and music teachers are not allowed to operate Hotel equipment, make requests, suggestions or interfere with MAMTG's sound technician or Room Captains. Audio accompaniment or recorded tracks are permitted and are recommended in the form of Audio CDs. Smart Phones, Tablets and MP3 players are allowed, however it’s recommended for students/participants to bring/provide their own audio cables for connectivity to the hotel audio system(s). MAMTG is not responsible for CDs or devices that do not play/operate accordingly at the Festival and/or during the student’s performance time.
OPEN ART SOLOStudent is to perform one song, within a 5-minute time limit, of the Classical genre. Musical Theatre pieces/songs/repertoire are not considered Art Songs and are not acceptable for this event. Standard Art Solo Standards Music cannot be performed in Open Art Solo. Microphones are NOT allowed for the performance. Student is to bring/provide a clean copy of the published sheet music for the judge. No photocopies of sheet music.

VIRTUOSO CLASSICAL VOICEStudent is to perform two songs, one song in English and one song in a foreign language, within a 10-minute time limit for the total performance time. Microphones are NOT allowed for the performance. Student is to bring/provide a clean copy of the published sheet music, for each song, for the judge. No photocopies of sheet music.
MUSICAL THEATREStudent is to perform one song, within a 5-minute time limit. Contestants must precede their performance with a speech, not longer than one minute in length. Content of the speech can include the name of the musical, the composer, the name of the character they are portraying and where it takes place. The selection must be an excerpt from a Musical. Microphones are allowed for the performance.
Props & Costumes - The use of props/costumes are welcomed, however should be kept minimal as excessive props delay the performance schedule. It is the responsibility of each student/performer to make sure their props are cleared after their performance. Props & Costumes may be factored into the overall scoring and may even hurt the performance with too many distractions. Human props are not allowed. Props left behind or unattended may be discarded or lost. The focus of each vocal performance is based on the participants vocal ability, stage presence and delivery, not on the use of extraneous objects during the performance. Props that can create a mess with debris are not allowed.
MUSICAL THEATRE STANDARDStudent is to perform/sing one song, from our Standards Repertoire List, found on the Registration Form. Student must sing the song in the arrangement listed below. Microphones are allowed for the performance. Student is to bring/provide a clean copy of the published sheet music for the judge. No photocopies.
TALENT SHOWCASEStudent is to perform/sing one song, within a 5-minute time limit. Student/Performer may sing any non-classical selection/song of choice. Student/Performer must accompany themselves on an instrument - Piano, Guitar, Accordion, Keyboard, etc... Contestants must supply their own amplification equipment, if needed. Judging is based on the overall performance including voice/vocal technique. CD players/audio accompaniment are NOT permitted/allowed for this performance event. Sheet music for the judge is NOT required.
OPEN JAZZ SOLOStudent is to perform/sing one song, within a 5-minute time limit. Selection of music must be of the Jazz genre. Musical Theater or Pop selection may be used, but must have a Swing rhythm/feel. Microphones are allowed in the performance. Sheet music for the judge is NOT required.
OPEN POP SOLOStudent is to perform/sing one popular song, within a 5-minute time limit. Selection of music must be of popular genre. Microphones are allowed in the performance. Sheet music for the judge is NOT required.
VOICE EVALUATION | Non Competitive Student is to perform/sing one song, within a 5-minute time limit. Selection of music is at the discretion of the student's teacher. This is a private one-on-one performance between the student, teacher and adjudicator. No one else is allowed in the evaluation room other than the student's family & music teacher. The adjudicator may offer a brief constructive critique of the performance. Microphones are not allowed in the performance. Student is to bring/provide a copy of the published sheet music for the judge. No photocopies.
