1 RED DEER LAKE SCHOOL MARCH 2017 NEWSLETTER ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE Although our years in elementary school were many years ago, we are certain about some things: we were definitely not talking about our amygdala, prefrontal cortex, nor our hippo- campus, especially in regards to the impact of these brain areas on our own learning! Times have certainly changed and brain research provides us and students with some powerful in- formation. As part of the health curriculum, many teachers are using Mind Up resources to help stu- dents understand what is going on in their bodies as they learn. In turn they are able to see the impact that stress and anxiety can have upon learning, and most importantly, are able to take steps to help reduce stress and improve learning. Another important goal of learning about the brain is the development of empathy and compassion for other students, but also for themselves. To this end, these lessons can impact our ability to improve relationships and the mental health of all students in our building. If you are interested in learning more, please talk to your child’s teacher, our Learning Coaches Mrs. LaBrash and Mrs. Holt, or talk to your School Council leaders. We would be happy to include a short presentation for parents at an upcoming School Council meeting, if interest is there. In RDL these days, we have a new Grade 6 student government for the 2 nd half of the year, as well as newly trained Grade 5 Peer Mediators on the playground, helping out the younger students. Grade 4 students continue to recycle for the school, and many students made a big impact on our Heart to Heart day on February 17th, volunteering at various organiza- tions as well as making donations of food and other items. We are proud of our Dragons and so we end February with an assembly to celebrate the many accomplishments so far this year; as well, it’s our chance to wear PINK in support of the anti-bullying movement.

ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE

Although our years in elementary school were many years ago, we are certain about some things: we were definitely not talking about our amygdala, prefrontal cortex, nor our hippo-campus, especially in regards to the impact of these brain areas on our own learning! Times have certainly changed and brain research provides us and students with some powerful in-formation. Administra ve Message cont... There are many exciting things going on this month at RDL. From band trips to U of C, Camp Caroline or Banff, to Basketball finals, to Science Fair and an Astrophysical Obser-vatory, to skiing and skating, it’s an engaging and interesting month. Be sure to keep in-formed through agendas, notes home, and the RDL website. We hope to see many of you at our Parent-Teacher Interviews and Student-Led Confer-ences on March 1st and 2nd.

Grade 7-9 Parent-Teacher Interviews will be the regular, drop-in format in the gym on both days. You don’t need an appointment for these, just come by when it is convenient for you. We do not anticipate any long waits. Grade 6 teachers have sent home information specific to their interviews/conferences. Grade 1 to 5 teachers look forward to a new approach this spring: Student-Led Conferences. We hope that all parents will bring their children and have them show you various school work and tasks to give you an idea about their learning. This is a great opportunity for your child to show you a taste of their school day, and they are so excited to share with you! Unlike past years, these Spring conferences are NOT by invitation, they are for ALL students and parents. Grades 1 & 2 parents, please sign-up online (see our website), whereas grades 3-5 are a drop-in format, hosting sur-names A-M on Wednesday and surnames N-Z on Thursday. If this does not work for your family, please contact your child’s teacher and we will certainly make a switch.

Yours in learning, Shannon Culbert, Principal Judy Leyden, Vice-Principal

Foothills Composite High School/ Alberta High School of Fine Arts will be hosting a Fentanyl and other illicit drug awareness night on March 13th at 7:00 pm and we are opening the doors to the community. Please share this information with ALL of your families and open your phone lines to encourage people to RSVP. I will be contacting all the schools the Monday March 13th to get a rough estimate of our numbers for that evening-so please keep track. Thank you so much for spreading the word, I think that this will be very informative and helpful to our families. Please use the following message:

“NOPE TO DOPE.”

NO POSITIVE END TO DOPE

If you have a son or daughter in Junior High or High School they could be exposed to legal or illicit drugs such as Fentanyl. Fentanyl is a deadly opiate drug that is in our community, province and country. A panel of guest speakers are speaking out about the deadly drug to bring an evening of awareness and prevention to all Okotoks and Foothills residents.

This evening will provide families with professional advice in what to look for in your child if you suspect they are using Marijuana, or experiencing with other drugs.

This evening should not be missed, to stop the drug intruder and to give our youth a future!

Please RSVP to your son or daughters school so that we know how many people to anticipate.

Please direct any further question to Gina Kilbreath [email protected]
