We usually use the Simple Present Tense to
show present time.
The present tense conveys immediate
factuality (Lewis 1986):
I skim the New York Times at breakfast.
The earth rotates around the sun.
My mother loves daisies.
It is a beautiful day.

Habitual actions in the present:

General timeless truths, such as physical laws or customs:
Water freezes at 0 degrees centigrade.
Spaniards eat dinner late.

With beand other stative verbs to indicate states:
There is a large house on the corner.
I know Mr. Jackson.

Or even the inception of states:
Now, I understand.
In the subordinate clauses of time or condition when the
main clause contains a future-time verb:
After he finishes work, hell do the errands.If Cindy passes the bar exam, shell be able to

Expresses future ( when a schedualed event is
involved, usually with a future-time adverbial ) :
I have a meeting next Wednesday at that time.
Present event/ action (usually in sporting events
or demonstrations/ procedures of some sort.) :
Here comes the pitch; Lim swings and misses.
Now I add three eggs to the mixture.

USE 1 Completed Action in thePast
Use the Simple Past to express the idea that anaction started and finished at a specific time in thepast. Sometimes, the speaker may not actuallymention the specific time, but they do have onespecific time in mind.
Examples: I sawa movie yesterday.
I didn t seea play yesterday.
Last year, I traveledto Japan.
Last year, I didn t travelto Korea. Didyou havedinner last night?

USE 2 A Series of CompletedActions
We use the Simple Past to list a series ofcompleted actions in the past. These actionshappen 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and so on.
Examples:
I finishedwork, walkedto the beach, and founda niceplace to swim.
He arrivedfrom the airport at 8:00, checkedinto thehotel at 9:00, and
met
the others at 10:00.
Didyou addflour, pourin the milk, and then addthe

USE 3 Duration in Past
The Simple Past can be used with a duration which
starts and stops in the past. A duration is a longeraction often indicated by expressions such as: fortwo years, for five minutes, all day, all year, etc.
Examples:
I livedin Brazil for two years. Shauna studiedJapanese for five years.
They satat the beach all day.
They did not stayat the party the entire time.
We talkedon the phone for thirty minutes. A: How long didyou waitfor them?
B: Wewaited
for one hour.

USE 4 Habits in the Past
The Simple Past can also be used todescribe a habit which stopped in thepast. It can have the same meaning as
"used to." To make it clear that we aretalking about a habit, we often addexpressions such as: always, often,usually, never, when I was a child, when I
was younger, etc.

USE 5 Past Facts orGeneralizations
The Simple Past can also be used to describe pastfacts or generalizations which are no longer true.As in USE 4 above, this use of the Simple Past isquite similar to the expression "used to."
Examples: She wasshy as a child, but now she is very outgoing.
He didn t liketomatoes before.
Didyou livein Texas when you werea kid?
People paidmuch more to make cell phone calls in thepast.

Simple Future has two different forms inEnglish:

USE 1: "Will" to Express a VoluntaryAction
"Will" often suggests that a speaker will dosomething voluntarily. A voluntary action isone the speaker offers to do for someoneelse. Often, we use "will" to respond tosomeone else's complaint or request forhelp. We also use "will" when we requestthat someone help us or volunteer to dosomething for us. Similarly, we use "will
not" or "won't" when we refuse tovoluntarily do something.

USE 2 : "Will" to Express a Promise
"Will" is usually used in promises.Examples:
I will callyou when I arrive.
If I am elected President of the United States, I willmakesure everyone has access to inexpensivehealth insurance.
I promise I will not tellhim about the surpriseparty.
Don't worry, Ill becareful.
I won t tellanyone your secret.

USE 3 :"Be going to" to Express a Plan
"Be going to" expresses that something is a plan. It
expresses the idea that a person intends to do somethingin the future. It does not matter whether the plan isrealistic or not.
Examples:
He is going to spendhis vacation in Hawaii.
She is not going to spendher vacation in Hawaii.
A: When arewe going to meeteach other tonight?B: We
are going to meet
at 6 PM.
Im going to bean actor when I grow up.
Michelle is going to beginmedical school next year. They are going to driveall the way to Alaska.

USE 4 "Will" or "Be Going to" toExpress a Prediction
Both "will" and "be going to" can expressthe idea of a general prediction about the
future. Predictions are guesses about whatmight happen in the future. In "prediction"sentences, the subject usually has littlecontrol over the future and therefore USES
1-3 do not apply. In the following examples,there is no difference in meaning.
