Gather round, my young friends, and I’ll tell you a taleso that in your own life you won’t have to fail.Remember, to Allah and Mohammad we must yearn--There’s no good for Man if God he does spurn.

There once was a camel, fine helper to Man, who ended up lost and alone in the sand.As wise as he was, he realized too latethat good luck can turn bad, and so can one’s fate.

He liked helping his Master, it made him feel good.He never complained and he did what he should. But as he got old, his bray became mumbly. His bones felt all tired and his feet got all stumbly.

It wasn’t his life anymore, not at all.He felt dazed and baffled and ready to fall. His Master insulted him, mocked him, and teased, then tossed him away like an orange that’s been squeezed.

The camel walked off, feeling sad and betrayed, thinking of humans and the misery they made. “I carried their drink, I carried their food! But now that I’m gray they are nothing but rude.

“I heard them say they should just let me die!I thought I was dreaming, I wanted to cry.But now I can see how I’m paid for my deeds--Tossed out on my own, no care for my needs.”

The camel kept moaning till he made himself sick, and he said to himself, “Stop being so thick!Enjoy your freedom for now it is here.Who knows what bad things may happen next year?

“And what at this moment may seem so, so sadmay later turn out to be good luck you’ve had.Hold tight to your wise friends, to your self stay true, and avoid foolish buddies who might betray you.”

The stones were his bed and his blanket was air. There was no one to bother him, no one to care.Water and figs his hump kindly stored. And when he felt lonely, in the breeze he sensed the Lord.

He felt truly happy, that camel cast out, with no reason to spit, no reason to pout.As he nibbled on prickly pears, his memory blurred. He savored his place far away from the herd.

But one night in his slumber he heard a loud THUMP.He leapt to his feet, jiggling his hump.He felt his heart beating clear down to his hooves. He thought of men and jackals, their dangerous moves.

But now all was quiet, there wasn’t a rustleStill the camel stood tense, ready to bustle,His insides were wobbly, his knobby knees shook. He turned his head slowly, half frightened to look.

Nothing. So he ran like an arrow, and the stars heard him say“I won’t be your slave; I won’t be your prey!”Then the stars saw him fall, heard a noise hard and honky, saw him splayed on the ground on top of a donkey.

The camel woke up, looked around with a smile.Beneath him the donkey complained all the while: “I escaped from my pain and my beatings, it’s true, but I didn’t escape to get sat on by YOU!”

The camel got up and the donkey kept talking. With anger and woe he was desperately rocking. The camel said, “Life here is better than you know, and if you die righteous, to paradise you’ll go!

“Stay with me, my brother. We can live here togethersharing our drink, our hope, our weather. My promise is like clear water, not tainted or mucky, so let’s sing together, we’re lucky! We’re lucky!”

“I’ll call you Prince,” said the donkey, bowing low. “Wherever you lead me, this donkey will go.My master despised me and sent me to languish. But now I’m the winner, for with you there’s no anguish.

“I feel like a ship that was once lost at sea.So thank you, my friend; here there’s security.Your life is my beacon and with you I’ll thrive. So saith I the donkey, may my words be inscribed.”

The donkey’s fine speech rang out strong and prouddrawing to the friends quite an animal crowd. Each creature talked of cruel things he’d endured, how man would face judgment at the end of the world.

The horse talked of masters who never said thank-you.The dog spoke of oppressors who’d pet you, then spank you.The cat said, “When I was young, I caught all their mice, but when I went hungry, they didn’t think twice.”

The mule had a story that ran red as paint, a story of torture that made creatures feel faint. All talked of people and their cruel, nasty words. All cried for justice--even the birds!

The donkey pushed into the middle of the throng, said, “Get ready, ye animals, we’ll right the wrong!Let’s build great walls so we’ll all be protected. With faith in God, a castle can be erected.

“And what sturdier fortress can we build than to teach? The knowledge one has, an invader can’t reach. We’ll make our children strong through and through! If humans attack us, we’ll know what to do.

“We’ll pluck our enemies like fruit from a tree. They’ll deserve their troubles! They can’t blame you and me.We won’t run away or fear for our life. The peaceful will thrive, the aggressors meet strife.”

Preening like a lion, the donkey roared his orationand the animals gave him a tremendous ovation. But then they walked off, quick as they’d arrived. The camel shook his head as his hopes for them dived.

“What good is talk if it’s nothing but words? What good is a crowd if it’s only a herd? That speech was like wine, it sent everyone dreaming. But if they were attacked, I think they’d run screaming!

“They were like dry sticks a spark burst into flamebut when the burning’s done, only ashes remain. The animals have left and gone back to their old places, Weak and ungrateful, bitterness in their faces.”

The fire and throngs gone, the pair didn’t lack a thing. They led a life of peace till the donkey said he’d sing.“Don’t do it,” said the camel, “men might capture us again!”But the donkey just scoffed at the words of his friend.

“I must sing, I must!” the donkey said, braying. “Please don’t,” whispered the camel, in something like pain. “Don’t you see what you’re risking?” the camel did plead, but the donkey said singing was his biggest need.

Well, people did indeed hear that loud caterwaulingand fell on the pair with a speed quite appalling. The beasts, healed by their freedom, were healthy and strong--The men grabbed them like giftsfor which they had longed.

Roped and saddled walked the donkey, bemoaning his chum--so vain, so stubborn, so exceedingly dumb!Yet what was the point of regret and woe now? After it has died, does one stillfeed the cow?

And time doesn’t go backward, but only ahead. The axe, as wise men say, had already hit the head. The cat had gone off and themice had come alive, but now the cat was back, andthe mice had lost all drive.

“I’ll get out of this!” thought the donkey, not letting himself doubt, and he flopped to the ground as if he’d passed out.His captors kicked at him, thinking his brain might come back. They never suspected his sickness was an act.

When the donkey woke up he was slumped on a saddleway up in the air, on the hump of the camel. “He’ll wake up,” said a man, and the donkey whispered, “No!You won’t take me back to a life full of woe.”

The donkey weighed heavy on the camel’s back.Anger and vengeance made him plan an attack. “I want to dance! I want to!” the camel said, swaying. “Don’t do it,” whispered the donkey, in something like pain.

“My friend,” said the camel, “did I say not to sing?Did I tell you your big mouth was not a good thing? But you didn’t listen, and now it’s my turnto give you a lesson that even you can learn Now

The camel set to dancing, he leapt and he churned. The poor donkey gripped till his four hooves felt burned. The camel got faster, a fury unchecked. The donkey fell off, and--snap!--broke his neck.

The point of the story is simply this: It takes two to tango, it takes two to kiss. The fate of a friend may be in your care; the folly of a friend should make you beware.

“Abu Saber Challenging Dangers, a fun allegorical poem, which tells the story of two animals: a camel and a donkey. The two animals live happily together in the wilderness after being offensively expelled by their owners who disregard the two animals’ past record and old age. Self-pride, carelessness and egoism replace cooperation, sacrifice and carefulness and, in consequence, the two animals, now in good health, find themselves in captivity.”
