Welcome to Science We will alternate units throughout the year

• Science: Harcourt text and Hands on Investigation– Approx. 90 minutes broken into whole group instruction,

hands on, individual and group work. – Within each content unit, focus on problem solving &

INQUIRY skills (compare, infer, use numbers, predict, interpret data, classify, etc.)

– Utilize guided note packets and booklets, non-fiction reading strategies, & study skills

– Complete Investigations & Experiments- Group, pairs, individual

– Textbooks stay in classroom- may take one home if requested

Science

• Topics of Study– Scientific Method, Environment, Ecosystems, Cycles (Life,

Water), Earth Structure and Change, Natural Resources, Conservation, Cells, Energy, Sound Waves…

• Expectations– Students should be prepared, pay attention by

listening and participating, ask questions, and be respectful to classmates.

– Students should utilize the GREEN science folder to be organized. They are responsible to keep their science notes and papers.

– Completion of class work- notes, investigations, – participation– Nightly review of class notes and any written– homework- I do give pop quizzes!

Science • Grading

– Tests & quizzes – Investigations- Procedure and packet– Notes packets- looking for completion,

10pts. per page. – Projects– Study Skills- HW and to earn extra points

on tests- make a study skills example. Hand in the example on the day of the test. Sheet is stapled into agenda.

– Look for graded papers in the HOME folder. Do not need to be returned unless noted on test (usually a lower grade). Sign up for access to grades online at Admin building!

How can families help?• Pencils! Check every night that your child has 2

sharpened pencils!

• Sign agenda after your child has shown you his /her homework

• Folder clean out - we will do this in class with your child Please don’t get rid of anything for them!

• When your child is absent- inquire to pick up the missed work.

**Ask your child to talk to you about what happened in each subject that particular day!
