Welcome to ICEIC 2020

On behalf of the committee members, I welcome you to the

ICEIC 2020, the 19th International Conference on Electronics,

Information, and Communication. The theme of ICEIC 2020 is

Imagine the Future, Together with IEIE: AI, 5G, XR, and More.

Over the past 19 years, ICEIC has been established as the premier forum to introduce important new results in the fields of Electronics, Information, and Communication. This year, we have 86 oral presentations, 181 poster presentations, and a total of 267 papers. According to the affiliation of the first authors, we have papers from 21 different countries. The technical program covers three days of presentations including three Plenary Talks from world-famous speakers, 9 Special Sessions composed of 27 interesting talks, and 9 invited talks.

In addition to the technical programs, a series of social events have been prepared to provide attendees and their guests the opportunities for both academic and informal interactions. The social events begin with the Welcoming Reception on Sunday (Jan. 19th), and continue on with the Opening Ceremony on Monday morning (Jan. 20th). The main social event is the Conference Banquet on Tuesday (Jan. 21st), which will provide an evening of celebration, awarding, and a performance by famous local dancers. Besides these, we have several social entertainment activities for students and young researchers such as “Heroes and Friends,” “Make Your Own Luck,” and “Who is the best photogenic?”. I hope you participate in these activities and make your days at ICEIC 2020 more enjoyable.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the com-mittee members of ICEIC 2020. The Organizing Committee (OC) is composed of 20 members, who had actively participated in many general committee meetings and numerously more divi-sion meetings to discuss and plan the details to make ICEIC 2020 more successful. I also would like to express my sincere appreciations to the Technical Program Committee (TPC) for their hard work in reviewing the papers and for arranging the excellent technical program. My appreciation also goes to the Special Session organizers and invited speakers. ICEIC 2020 is the result of their hard work and the dedication of the staff members of the Institute of Electronics and Information Engineers (IEIE). I especially thank the authors who submitted their precious latest works to ICEIC 2020. In addition, I am grateful to the sponsors for their generous and significant financial supports.

Re-Engineering Computing with Neuro-Inspired Learning: Devices, Circuits, and Systems

Abstract

Advances in machine learning, notably deep learning, have led to computers matching or surpassing human performance in several cognitive tasks including vision, speech and natural lan-guage processing. However, implementation of such neural algorithms in conventional “von-Neumann” architectures are several orders of magnitude more area and power expensive than the biological brain. Hence, we need fundamentally new approaches to sustain exponential growth in performance at high energy-efficiency beyond the end of the CMOS roadmap in the era of ‘data deluge’ and emergent data-centric applications. Exploring the new paradigm of computing necessitates a multi- disciplinary approach: exploration of new learning algorithms inspired from neuroscientific principles, developing network architectures best suited for such algorithms, new hardware techniques to achieve orders of improvement in energy con-sumption, and nanoscale devices that can closely mimic the neu-ronal and synaptic operations of the brain leading to a better match between the hardware substrate and the model of computation. In this presentation, we will discuss our work on spintronic device structures consisting of single-domain/domain- wall motion based devices for mimicking neuronal and synaptic units. Implementation of different neural operations with varying degrees of bio-fidelity (from “non-spiking” to “spiking” networks) and implementation of on-chip learning mechanisms (Spike- Timing Dependent Plasticity) will be discussed. Additionally, we also propose probabilistic neural and synaptic computing platforms that can leverage the underlying stochastic device physics of spin-devices due to thermal noise. System-level

Page 16: 1. Welcome to ICEIC 2020 4 5 - Technical Program Committee 7 8 · 2020-01-09 · 1. Welcome to ICEIC 2020 _2 2. Technical Program Overview _4 3. Committee - Organizing Committee _5

16

simulations indicate ~100x improvement in energy consumption for such spintronic implementations over a corresponding CMOS implementation across different computing workloads. Com-plementary to the above device efforts, we have explored different learning algorithms including stochastic learning with one-bit synapses that greatly reduces the storage/bandwidth require-ment while maintaining competitive accuracy, saliency-based attention techniques that scales the computational effort of deep networks for energy-efficiency and adaptive online learning that efficiently utilizes the limited memory and resource constraints to learn new information without catastrophically forgetting already learnt data.

NanoSats: Current trends in Scientific and Communications Missions

Abstract

Today, space is experiencing a revolution: from large space agencies, multimillion dollar budgets, and big satellite missions to spin-off companies, moderate budgets, and fleets of small satellites. Some have called this the “democratization” of space, in the sense that it is now more accessible than it was just a few years ago. To a large extent, this revolution has been fostered on one side by the standardization of the platforms’ mechanical interfaces, and on the other side by the technology developments coming from mobile communications. Standard platform’s mechanical interfaces have led to standard orbital deployers, and new launching capabilities. The technology developed for cell phones has brought more computing resources, with less power consumption and volume.

Small satellites are used as pure technology demonstrators, for targeted scientific missions, mostly Earth Observation, some for Astronomy, and they are starting to enter in the field of com-munications, as huge satellite constellations are now becoming more possible.

In this lecture, the most widely used nano/microsats form factors, and its main applications will be presented. Then, the main Scientific Earth Observation and Astronomy missions suitable to be boarded in SmallSats will be discussed, also in the context of the rising Constellations of SmallSats for Communication. Finally, the nanosat program at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) will be introduced.

Recent Trends and Issues of Autonomous Driving Technology

Abstract

Over the decade, researchers have been investigating viable technologies to realize autonomous driving. While there has been significant progress in software as well as hardware tech-nology for driving autonomously in some specific scenarios, there still remain many challenges for driving in general urban environments. Autonomous driving in dense urban areas pres-ents an especially difficult task due to the inherent complexity originated from a large number of moving objects, un-predictable movement of objects, varying road situations, un-certain traffic regulations, etc. In this talk, I will discuss recent trends and several key issues of urban autonomous driving. I will review recent technological advances and bring up some of the controversial issues from both the technology and legal aspects. I will also introduce the research activities in SNU with some re-search results.

Deep Learning for Autonomous Driving

Abstract

In this tutorial, we introduce the recent advances in machine learning technology used for autonomous driving. The autono-mous driving is considered as an emerging technology lying at the heart of the key innovations in this era. Autonomous driving is more challenging than any other engineering problems in that the systems should generalize well for a wide variety of unseen environments and be (almost perfectly) robust to rarely occurring heavy tailed events. Deep learning offers the great opportunity to overcome these challenges but it also has the limitation that should be factored in the system design. In this tutorial, we will look into these challenges and introduce several disciplines required when designing deep learning-based autonomous driving systems. We will go through the current state of the art perception/deci-sion-making algorithms leveraging the great power of deep learning, which includes 3D object detection, sensor fusion, tra-jectory prediction, and driver intention understanding. Then, we briefly introduce our recent research progress. Finally, we conclude this tutorial, discussing the future research direction.

Flamenco

Flamenco, which de-veloped from the 14th century, seems to have originated from the folk songs of Gypsy, Anda-lusian, Arab, and Jewish Spanish. In the 19th cen-tury, as gypsies danced

professionally, flamenco became a reference to Gypsies’ music and dance.

It usually consists of cante (songs) accompanied by guitar music and improvisation; a profound and magnificent flamen-co is accompanied by spleen and deals with death, defilement, religion, etc. The flamenco of the middle is less profound, but it is often accompanied by an oriental tone in music.

When dancing, men’s feet are complicated, with their toes and heels clacking, and women’s dances depend on the beauty of their hands and bodies rather than their feet. Performances involve complex rhythmic clapping, finger bouncing, and tracking, often featuring castanets.

Sagrada Familia

It is a Roman Catholic cathedral built in Barcelona, Spain. “Sagrada” means sacred or sacred in Spanish, and Familia is also called the Holy Family Cathedral because it means family. It was designed by Catalan architect Antony Gaudy and was responsible for direct construction. Gaudí’s work on the build-ing is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in November 2010, Pope Benedict XVI declared promotion to the cathedral he gave to the cathedral.

The construction of the cathedral in 1882 was initiated by Francisco de Paula del Villar. When Viyar resigned in 1883, Gaudí took over as chief architect, transforming the project in-to an architectural and engineering style that combined Gothic architectural style and Art Nouveau style. Gaudí spent the rest of his life in the project, and when he died in 1926 at the age of 73, a quarter of the project was completed. This church is the only church Gaudí completed and died in the eastern castle.

The building of the cathedral proceeded slowly because it re-lied solely on personal donations, but was stopped by the Spanish Civil War in the 1950s. Since the construction began, construction has been accelerated and construction has been underway in mid-2010 due to the development of technology such as computer support design and CNC (Computerized Numerical Control). However, some of the project’s biggest challenges remain, including the construction of 10 additional spires. Each represents an important biblical figure in the New Testament, and is expected to be completed in 2026, the cente-nary of Gaudí’s death.

In addition, Sagrada Familia Cathedral is considered to be one of the best works built by Catalonia Modernism.

Casa Mila, La Pedrera

It is a coalition house commissioned by Pedro Milla Kamps, a fan of genius architect Gaudí, to see Casa Batyo, better known as La Pedrera (a quarry) than the name Casa Milla (Mila’s

house). In the appearance of a building like a huge stone, I can feel the curves Gaudie pursues and the design close to nature. The iron balcony, resembling the appearance of a curved shape reminiscent of the sea wave and the seaweed stem, was a laughing matter for the citizens of Barcelona because it did not match the surrounding buildings, but it is now one of Barcelona’s representative landmarks. The rooftop is impressive with unique design chimneys such as Roman soldiers wearing helmets and tiled crosses, and the scenery of Barcelona overlooking here is also special. Downstairs is an exhibition hall where you can see the works of Gaudí and images of Gaudí. Downstairs are very interesting because there is an exhibition hall where you can see the life of the time.It is also listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.

Picasso Museum in Barcelona

Born in Malaga, Picasso moved to Barcelona at the age of 14 and spent puberty, but he did not have much time to stay here because he traveled to Madrid and Paris to study painting.

The Picasso Museum of Art in Barcelona, which opened in 1963, is the world’s first Picasso Museum of Art, located in the alley of the Born dis-trict, a Gothic district with medieval antique buildings.

Picasso has a large number of early works with paintings in-cluding paintings, prints, and sketches that display various works of art such as graffiti, sculptures and ceramics from childhood, and is a major space to understand his youth.

The museum building, which was built in the 13th and 15th centuries, shows the Gothic style of Catalonia and has been re-paired several times and has reached now.

Ramblas Street, La Rambla

The street from Catalonia Square to the Tower of Col-umbus in the direction of the Barcelona coast. Passing through the places where souvenirs and flowers are sold, comes the San Hospet Market (the Bokerian Market),

which is sought by Spain’s largest number of tourists, and it is also good to stop here and drink a glass of fresh fruit juice. Somewhere in the middle of Ramblas Street is a mosaic tile designed by a Hoan maze. Nearby is a building decorated with dragon and umbrella-shaped sculptures, which was said to have been an umbrella shop in the past, and the dragon sculpture is a work of Hoan maze. If you come down a little longer, you will see the Rayal Square, which is full of palm trees, where you can see the streetlights designed by Gaudi as a student, and on the right is the Guel mansion, Gaudi’s work. Finally, as we approach the shore, we notice many street artists who paint various kinds of portraits. Ramblas Street recommends taking a leisurely walk while enjoying the street itself.

Monestir de Montserrat

The first known mon-astery in the 9th century was later renovated, but in 1811 a significant portion was damaged by the army of Napoleon, France, and the monks also suffered a terrible death. It was not until the middle of the nineteenth century that the monks began to gather again. It entered the early 20th century and was restored to its present form, and now it is home to about 80 monks as a monastery of the Benedictine Monastery. The most important Basilica Cathedral here is the world’s first boy choir in the 13th century, one of the world’s top three boys’ choirs, Escolonia, and the black Virgin of Catalan. The facade in front of the cathedral was carved in Neo-Renaissance form with Jesus and 12 disciples, originally a pasade of silver, but it was rebuilt in 1900.The inside of the cathedral is decorated with paintings by Catalan painters, and on Saturdays without per-formances in Escalonia, you can often see the bride and groom who are married.

Güell Park

Güell Park, looking down at the Mediter-ranean and Barcelona at a glance, is full of Gaudí’s imagination, creative world, nature and human beings. This was originally designed by Gaudi’s

economic sponsor Güell to build a large housing complex modelled in the UK’s power city: Güell and Gaudi tried to build luxury houses here, but this was a rocky slope, and they had a lot of difficulty working. Eventually, despite the long 14-year construction period, the ambitious project ended in-completely and without overcoming geographical limitations and financial difficulties, only a few buildings, large squares and benches such as artwork remained. In 1922, the Barcelona City Council bought it and decorated it with a municipal park and made it public. Guoel Park is a place where the artificial beauty of nature and thoroughly planned beauty is well harmonized. There is no such thing as a naturally popping road and an artificial stone cave, as opposed to the natural-inspired beautiful buildings of various colors and curves, the tiles of colorful and mysterious mosaic decorations, and the choice of land. It is as good and mysterious as a set of surreal movies made on the secret hill. The two keywords that represent this park are surrealism and mystery.

Tossa de Mar

Tosa de Mar, located about 100 km northeast of Barcelona. It is a coastal village where Romans lived since the first century BC, and it is a beautiful place on the coast of Costa Brava. After passing through old

houses and alleys built in the Middle Ages, when you arrive at the beach, you can see the city’s landmark, the Castle of Tossa de Mar. This place is said to have been frequently stayed by the painter Chagall, who worked in South France because the scen-ery was beautiful. In fact, Chagall can see how special Tosa de Mar is to him, so that he puts the title “Blue Paradise” in the work based on Tosa de Mar.A small town to enjoy, but the view from Tosa de Mar Castle built on the hill reminds me of Paradise as Chagall felt.

El Poble Espanyol de Barcelona

It is a place where you can meet Spain in Barcelona, a huge out-door architecture mu-seum, Spain Village. The Spanish village, which is like a secret fortress on a quiet hillside north of the Monjuic Hill in Barcelona, was originally established in 1929 to see and feel Spain’s attractions and culture during the World Expo in Barcelona. Since then, it has been decorated with 120 buildings that have taken advantage of the traditional characteristics of various cities in Spain and a new town with city center plazas, and has been born as a present Spanish village. Modern architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch provided the idea and later, with collab-orations of famous architects and artists, buildings with different personalities were arranged in harmony. Buildings are made to be similar to life size, not miniatures, and add to the reality. Visitors can meet traditional houses, courtyards, magnificent cathedrals, monasteries, and plazas in one place, with round arched entrances and Gothic windows impressive.

Port Vell

It is a port located at the end of Ramblas Street. This is the port where Columbus re-turned after discovering the Americas, where Queen Isabelle came to meet Columbus re-turning at the time, and the tower of Columbus is now built. The deck bridge, which symbolizes the shape of the waves, is called ‘Rambla de Mar’, which means that it is an extension of Ramblas Street. Maré Magnum, located at the end of the bridge, is the only shopping center in Barcelona that opens on Sundays. The outer wall is mirrored, so it is a different memory when taking pic-tures here.On one side of the port bell is a docked yacht of the wealthy, and the huge ship that comes into view is the restora-tion of the Santa Maria, which Columbus took on his first voyage.
