    The world's 10 craziest sandwiches

    Pimp your lunch

After becoming a staple of cosy afternoon teas and schoolchildren's lunch boxes, sandwiches

have been unfairly branded as a 'safe' option for lunch.

Here to break that myth into lots of stunned pieces, we've been discovering the secret double-life

that our sociopathic breaded friend has been leading. After reading, and wincing, at these 10

sandwich variations, you'll probably feel just as betrayed as we do right now.

Let us know if you have any better contenders at the bottom.

    Now, in no particular order...

    1. The Luther Burger

Managing to push our acceptance of sweet mixed with savoury even more, this burger keepsthings pretty simple, but for the doughnut that holds it in place. It's apparently been named after

Luther Vandross, which may explain some of his severe weight issues...

    2. The Lasandwich

  • 7/30/2019 10 Craziest Burger

    3/25

Oh Lasandwich, how you continue to bewitch us with your utter ridiculousness. The cold, disgusting alternative to the warm, delicious Italian favourite kindly provided us with cheese-fuelled nightmares and a temporary increase in heart rate. Makers Tesco have since followed it

up with the Strawberries & Cream sandwich, which somehow manages to make even less sensethan this one.

    3. The McDonald Sandwich

  • 7/30/2019 10 Craziest Burger

    4/25

The obligatory most expensive sandwich everentry on the list comes from those posh folk at

Selfridges. Named after its creator, chef Scott McDonald, the 85 meal uses wagyu beef, fresh

lobe foie gras, black truffle mayonnaise, brie de meaux, rocket, red pepper and mustard confit

and English plum tomatoes. For 85, we'd expect a plaque too.

    4. The Double Down

  • 7/30/2019 10 Craziest Burger

    5/25

If you're in the small minority of people who love sandwiches but hate the stupid, foul-tasting

bread that's always included, you'll be a big fan of this one. The KFC special used two friedchicken fillets to house bacon, two kinds of cheese and special sauce. Oh and they also used just

under a day's allowance of sodium. Oh and no that wouldn't stop us from trying one.

    5. The Big Sandwich

  • 7/30/2019 10 Craziest Burger

    6/25

While sandwiches might aim to be healthy, their unavoidable bread content makes them a fattiersibling to the smug salad. This super-sized sandwich is embracing this black, chubby sheep

status and aiming instead to cause a heart attack to anyone brave enough to try. Containing a

mixture of pepperoni, burgers, sausages, bacon, crisps, cheese, chicken nuggets and other pulse-quickening ingredients, the final product contained around 50,000 calories. You can see them

    make magic here.

    6. The TastyKake Sandwich

Now, we're not entirely opposed to combining sweet with savoury. In fact, we still mourn theloss of chocolate pretzels from UK shelves. But when it comes to combining chocolate covered,

peanut butter flavoured sponge cakes with cheese burgers, we're not so sure. These strange

sliders were an actualdish in Adsum restaurant in Philadelphia.

    7. The Melo

When making a sandwich, skimping on the fillings is up there with burning books and drowningpuppies in our mind. So you can imagine how our eyes and jaw widened when we saw this

monster from the Carnegie Deli in New York. Named after Knicks player Carmelo Anthony, the

  • 7/30/2019 10 Craziest Burger

    9/25

intimidatingly tall sandwich is made from salami, pastrami and bacon. We think we've had this

    dream before.

    8. The Candwich

Useful perhaps only in the event of an impending apocalypse, the sandwich-in-a-can is every bit

as suspect as it sounds. A long shelf life, no need for refrigeration and a chillingselection of

flavours (including BBQ chicken and pepperoni pizza), make this a meal we'd happily skip.

    Again and again.

    9. The Rubik's Cubewich

After being reminded enough times, we're conditioned to believe that we shouldn't ever play with

our food. This sandwich is therefore quite a frustrating proposition. Built like a Rubik's Cube yetwith cold meats and cheese, it also looks pretty frustrating to eat. So, yeah it's cool and all that

but we're sort of annoyed now.

    10. The Fried Brain Sandwich

  • 7/30/2019 10 Craziest Burger

    11/25

Unless you're dining near the Temple of Doom or you're Hannibal Lector, chances are you're

probably not big into eating brains. You'll therefore be every bit as repulsed by this sandwich aswe are. Sliced calves brains get deep-fried in batter and served at a number of mid-western

eateries. Well, they did before BSE got all serious and stuff. Now they've been replaced by pigs'

    brains. Much better, obviously.

Imagine a world without sandwiches. Where we glumly sat down at lunch, unable to imagine

how bread, meat and cheese could ever get on together. Now, after you've cried your tears, feel

happy in the knowledge that our world is literally full of sandwiches.

But therein lies another problem. With so many choices, how do you prevent disappointment?

In comes us. We've spent an unhealthy amount of time salivating over the greatest the world has

to offer between two slices of bread and put together a list of the ultimate ten.

Take a deep breath, clear some space for that drool spot and read on...

Oh and make sure to let us know what we've missed off at the bottom.

    Katz's Pastrami at Katz's Delicatessen

Long before it featured in thatorgasm scene in When Harry Met Sally,Katzs Deliwas a New

York institution. Established in 1888, Katzs has served countless generations of New Yorkersand tourists alike. And the reason they keep flocking is its signature pastrami on rye. Served

simply on mustard adorned bread, with a side of pickles, this is the most moist and tender

pastrami imaginable. If you can wolf it down in one sitting, more power to your belly. If you

cant, return to it hours later the infusion of the meat, mustard and rye is pure heaven.

    Grilled cheese at Kappacasein

If there is such a thing as a gastronomic Shangri-La it must surely be Londons Borough Market.

And in among the magnificent array of heavenly smells, one stall teases customers in like a

foodie Pied Piper with its evocative waft of melted cheese. Kappacaseins toasted cheesesandwich is unlike any cheese sarnie youve ever experienced. The mix of shredded

Montgomery cheddar, onions, garlic and leeks packed tightly into the sourdough bread is

everything a sandwich should be: comforting, filling and reassuringly tasty.

    Francesinha at Bufete Fase

At the risk of sounding like Joey Tribbiani, indulge us for a short while: Ham? Good. Cured porksausage? Good. Steak? Good. Thick, gooey melted cheese? Good. A rich tomato and beer sauce?

Mmmm you sure youre not making this up? Ladies and gentlemen, we give you the

Francesinha, Portugals most notable gift to the world. Well, after Cristiano Ronaldo. And allthose 15th and 16th Century expeditions across the globe. And if you really want to get a slice of

this authentic action, theres only one place to head Bufete Fase in Porto. A tiny restaurant (a

few tables) with mountains of history.

Fish Banh Mi at Banh Mi 11

Having risen to prominence over the last decade, Vietnamese food now tops many a food lovers

list. We reckon this mighty Fish Banh Mi sandwich is partly responsible. To be found at the

Banh Mi 11 stall on Londons Broadway Market or Kings Cross Boulevard, this is a dish thatrebuts the notion that sandwiches are fast food. The grilled catfish is infused with turmeric and

slow cooked with dill and spring onion so the delicate flavours can properly rub shoulders. The

    end result is mesmerising.

While we might be easily impressed with flashy additions to the traditional sandwich, we're evenmore impressed when things are kept simple and they work just as effectively. Case in point, theback-to-basics brilliance of the bocadillo in Spain. The minimalist sandwich is all about the

tastiness of two major ingredients: jamon (that's fancy ham) and a rustic baguette. The greatest of

A Po Boy sandwich might look like a regular sub, but the juxtaposing attributes of the rollthe
