    The concepts behind following an alkaline diet are very simple: eat the things you knoware good for you (fresh, leafy green vegetables and salads etc.) and steer clear of thehings you know are bad (sugar, bad fats, alcohol, tobacco, yeast etc.).

    Basically the advice your mother taught you all those years ago!

    Of course, the science and research behind this approach is slightly more detailed thanhis - but following this simple rule is the basis of an extremely effective and beneficialifestyle - eat more fresh vegetables and cut out the junk food!

    The key is to maximise the amount of fresh, alkalising fruits and vegetables that you con-sume, along with plenty of pure, alkaline water, smoothies and juices.

    By following an alkaline cleanse we can ensure that our body receives the nourishment,

    nutrients and fuel it needs to remove acid toxins and wastes, maintain optimal health andsend your energy levels through the roof!

    How do I become alkaline?

    This is not as difficult or as technical as it sounds. When we talk about eating alkalinefoods or starting an alkaline diet we are referring to consuming those foods and drink which have an alkaline effect on the body.

    This effect is based upon the ash residue that remains after our foods areconsumed. Some foods leave an acid ash, whereas others leave an alkaline ash. This isdetermined by the mineral and nutrient make up of the food and the sugars it contains.Conveniently for us, our bodies have been designed to categorise which foods leave whichkind of ash into neat and easy to remember groups (refer to the Acid and Alkaline FoodChart in your weekly email and links for more detail).

    Of course, everybody is different - but after following this cleanse, most of us should aim

    and become alkalineHaving an acidic lifestyle:

    Makes Us Fat! The body creates fat cells in order to protect our organs from excessacids. The fat is designed to carry these acid wastes away to other, less critical areas of the body and it clings to these organs to provide protection. Once the body is rid of acidwastes (through a healthier diet and exercise) it no longer needs to hang onto thesefats for protection and it lets them go.

    Alongside this - weight problems are also compounded by the result of yeast and fun-gus overgrowths wreaking havoc on our digestive systems. And guess what - yeast andfungus thrive in an acidic environment. Because your body is now not able to properlyprocess foods and extract the full nutrition from the foods that you eat - your body isalways telling you that you are hungry. To compound this problem, the yeasts and fun-gus have the greatest shout in this signal to the brain - and what do they make youhungry for - more sugar, which further fuels the yeast growth.

    Steals Energy! Principally, over-acidity will cause our body to leach alkaline mineralsfrom our bones, muscles and other tissues to ensure that the blood maintains its deli-cate alkaline balance. This removal of alkaline minerals (particularly calcium and mag-nesium) inhibits efficient and effective cellular and body metabolism - making ussluggish, tired and cloudy. Put most simply - over acidification drains our bodies of en-ergy and inhibits the bodys ability to use stored energy reserves.

    Causes Free-Radical Damage and Premature Aging: Acidosis is a symptom of - and acause of - oxidative stress and lipid breakdown. The effect of this is that free radicaldamage is then promoted, attacking cell walls and membranes before killing the cellsthemselves. The outcome of this? Wrinkles, age spots, dysfunctional hormonal systems,poor eyesight, bad memory and foggy thinking - at the very least.     Having an acidic lifestyle:

    Causes Excess Mucus: Mucus is normal. It is just another mechanism by which the bodyeliminates toxins - it coats everything we ingest and engulfs the toxins. When toxins areengulfed the mucus becomes sticky, thick and cloudy in order to trap the toxins in.

    Acidic foods and drinks always contain toxins which cause so much mucus that we

    seem to be constantly blowing our noses! The worst offenders are dairy products, ani-mal protein, white flour and pastas, chocolate, coffee and alcohol.

    Corrodes and Destroys Veins, Arteries and Heart Tissues: Acid is corrosive - and overlyacidic blood and bodily fluids almost immediately begins to erode and destroy cell wallsof the heart, veins and arteries - leading to a much weakened cardiovascular system.

    Causes Bad Cholesterol Problems: When we create an acidic environment in our bodies- the body creates LDL-Cholesterol at an accelerated rate. This LDL Cholesterol thencauses huge amounts of clogging and cardiovascular problems.

    Increases Blood Pressure: With the acid problems above, including increased LDL Cho-lesterol and compromised cell health - the heart has to work increasingly harder tomove blood around the body. Acidosis is also to blame for venous vasoconstriction(meaning a decrease in diameter of the blood vessels) - which further adds to the work-load of the heart and raises blood pressure!

    ...and finally:

    A system that is riddled with excess acids and their wastes is compromised in so manyways - including hundreds of ways that are not even mentioned above! But even fromthis short list it is possible to see how acidosis could lead to: cardiovascular disease(high blood pressure, heart attacks, arteriosclerosis, stroke, high cholesterol etc), dia-betes & obesity, liver & kidney disease, cancer - in any form, neurological diseases, im-mune system deficiencies, premature aging, hormonal problems & imbalances,osteoporosis and many more!

    the alkaline cleanseCleansing is very simple. When you follow a plan, do it right and keep focused it isalso very, very easy. I know that right now it might feel a bit daunting, but let meput your mind at ease!

    Cleansing simply involves giving your body an abundance of easily absorbed nutrients,while cutting out the crap. The aim is to provide your body with all of the tools itneeds to rebuild, replenish and detoxify, in a way that requires as little work for yourbody to do its job.

    You will basically be giving your body a massive nutrient hit several times per day...inliquid form.

    This means soups, smoothies and juices. But dont be afraid, you wont be missingout. You will still be getting hot, cold, sometimes thick, creamy, chunky and some-times cool and refreshing. Always delicious.

    You can eat as much as you like, you will never be hungry (actually, you are not al-lowed to feel hungry!).

    The outcome for your body is that it can instantly start to cleanse and detoxify, rebuildand replenish and generate new, healthy, perfect cells. The outcome for you is thatyou will feel vibrant, energetic and alive. Your mind will feel focused and you will havesharpness to your thinking. You will feel confident and positive. The mental fog willbe lifted and if your body needs it, you may also experience the following:

    cleansing vs. fasting

    Im guessing that youve either thought about, re-searched, tried or heard of a few different detox,cleanse or fasting techniques in the past.

    If you look at a few detox diet pages on the internetthen you will find a huge variety of opinions and meth-ods.

    This worries me. Not because I dont think people

    should detox, but because some of the advice beingdished out is pretty disturbing. And mostly becausethere seems to be absolutely no real definition of what adetox actually involves, and more worryingly, the termsFAST and CLEANSE are used almost interchangably.

    I see these as two VERY different concepts, and from searching around on the Internetand in magazines, the randomness of the advice given and the calls in some publica-tions for fasting has left me a little concerned.

    The Difference Between Cleansing & Fasting

    Having scoured the web, I struggled to find a neat, single, accepted definition of eithercleansing or fasting and both cross over into definitions of detoxing.

    Wikipedia defines fasting as:

    Fasting is the act of willingly abstaining from some or all food and in some cases drink, for a period of time.

    And from the sites I have researched, there is a varying length of time for fasting,ranging from 3-100 days.

    Some insist on consuming nothing at all, others suggest only water while (most fa-mously) some suggest the lemonade fast (such as the Master Cleanse). In essence,they all emphasise that by ingesting almost nothing, the body will be forced to removewhatever it can from the blood, liver, kidneys, lymph and digestive tract.

    Cleansing, to me, has nothing to do with the above.

    In fact, to cleanse the body I believe that we need to givethe body MORE nutrients, minerals and energy foods inorder to help it to heal and detoxify itself.

    As mentioned above, this means a whole load of water,fresh vegetable juices, smoothies and fresh tasty soups.

    So whereas fasting is based upon giving the body nothingso that the toxins are forced out, cleansing is based uponfeeding the body with the tools to cleanse itself.

    Dr Young has provided two of the most powerfulmetaphors for this process - he describes it as a liquidfeast and an internal shower.

    So whereas both approaches agree that you should absolutely remove all of the crapfrom your diet - the key difference is what you put in.

    It simply makes more sense to me that if we want our body to heal itself and rid itself

    of toxins we need to give it the tools to do so.We need to give it plenty of vitamins, minerals and nutrients to repair itself, cleanse theblood and flush the crap out and perhaps most importantly we need to give it fibre tobrush the digestive system clean.

    Is it just me or does this not make a lot more sense?

    I mean, why would you want to starve your body of nutrients during such a vital time?

    cleanse guidelinesPut most simply, an alkaline cleanse involves consuming raw, fresh, alkaline soups,

    juices and smoothies for a period of between 3 and 10 days (and beyond for some!).

    This might sound like you are starving yourself, but in reality the opposite is true. Youconsume a LOT of nutrients, a LOT of calories and a LOT of food! You dont go hungry.If you feel hungry, you have some more.

    The types of ingredients you will become very familiar with over the next 10 days in-clude:

    Spinach Avocado Lettuce Broccoli Celery Cucumber Ginger Garlic

    Lemon Lime Parsley Kale Tomato & more!

    From these ingredients, you will be making an abundance of soups, smoothies and juices, all with different textures, tastes and temperatures!

    You also consume a lot of water during the cleanse. Good quality, clean, pure water. Ialso like to have herbal teas, ginger tea especially, alongside warm water with lemonsqueezed in.

    What Should We Avoid?

    I dont need to go into too much detail about what to avoid, as it is literally everythingelse! You have your acid/alkaline food chart to refer to, but if you stick to the recipes &

    menus in this course then you will be thriving and feeling great.

    If you are consuming only fresh, cleansing, alkaline soups, juices and smoothies thenyou dont really need to know a full and exhaustive list of things you will be avoiding!

    Here are the rules. If you stick to these eight simple principles then you just cant gowrong!

    1. Consume only fresh, raw, alkaline soups, smoothies, juices and water

    2. Eat and drink as much and as often as you need to never go hungry

    3. Soups can be warmed and still raw remember that, it makes a massivedifference!

    4. Use herbs as liberally as you like to alter flavours and give variety

    5. Drink four litres of good, clean water every day

    6. Aerobic exercise is essential, but only light exercise (walking, rebounding or very

    light jogging)

    7. No acidic foods, drinks or OTC drugs

    8. Treat supplements as a supplement! Dont try to replace food or meals withsupplements!

    There - it is as simple as that!

    If anything seems confusing or if you have questions at this stage, I recommend youhave a look at the daily meal plans and schedules. This will make it all clear.

    Alkaline Soups

    Soups are about to become your bestfriend! They will give you warmth, a fillingsatisfaction, texture, flavour, variety andlots and lots of goodness.

    Alkaline soups are quick and easy to pre-pare, usually only taking 10-12 minutes

    from start-to-finish, meaning that theymake the perfect emergency snack as wellas a full and filling meal.

    It is important to remember that these soups can be enjoyed chilled or warmed, assmooth or chunky as you like, and that you can feel free to play with herbs andspices to mix things up.

    These soups are all made in the blender, and usually include a mixture of vegeta-

    bles, leaves, avocados, herbs, spices and stock.

    One of my favourite raw, alkaline soups (to give you an idea) is made by blendinglightly steamed broccoli, cucumber, avocado, spinach, vegetable stock and fresh gin-ger. The warmth of the steamed broccoli and stock makes it comforting, while thesmoothness of the avocado makes it really satisfying and filling (and no, you canttaste the avocado if that worries you!). The broccoli also gives it a slightly chunkycrunchiness and the ginger finishes it off with a lovely zing.

    You can eat as much soup as you want to or need to. Remember, never go hungry!If you start to feel a hunger pang, just mix up a little more soup and away you go.Simple as that.

    Juice

    By juice, I mean vegetable juice. Unfortunatelyfruit juice is totally out of the equation when itcomes to alkalising. Juiced fruits, even when fresh,are highly acidic due to the concentration of sugars.

    ALL sugar is massively acidic, fermenting in thebody and fuelling the production of yeasts and can-dida. Consuming sugar is like throwing petrol on afire and is the single most important thing to elimi-nate from your diet as much as possible. So to thatend, fruit juice is out.

    But vegetable juice is in! That might not sound likemuch of a compromise now as your taste buds areprobably not accustomed to the subtle flavours of vegetables yet, but in time you will become hooked!

    Think of vegetable juices this way juice for oneperson will likely contain a few huge handfuls of spinach, a salads-worth of lettuce, awhole cucumber, a few sticks of celery, sprouts and an assortment of other greens.Think of all of the nutrients in there and think about how often you would actually eatthat much green food in one sitting, in the two minutes it takes to drink it?

    Imagine the energy burst you will get from your body receiving that much goodness inone hit! And because it doesnt contain the fibre the body is able to absorb and use itstraight away without any energy being used up to digest it!

    Green vegetable juices are highly alkalising, hydrating, nourishing and contain huge lev-els of chlorophyll, enzymes, phytonutrients, vitamins and alkaline minerals.

    Sound good?

    There are a few simple rules to follow when it comes to juicing:

    Always make the juice yourself, at home shop bought juices are almost alwayspasteurised, homogenised or heated to kill the bacteria and make the shelf

    life longer. Unfortunately this kills the goodness too. Consume the juice asap as soon as the vegetables have been juiced theenzymes begin to die. Dont leave your juice more than ten minutes.

    For extra goodness, add lemon juice, pH drops and/or green powder

    SmoothiesSimilar to the alkaline soup, the alkaline smoothies are made by simply mixing awhole heap of vegetables, leaves, herbs and spices in a blender.

    Smooth and filling, these smoothies are an unbelievable way to start your day. Youget a massive hit of nutrients, fibre, vegetables and hydration - these are all highwater content vegetables!

    But remember, these are not the normal smoothies you might be thinking of. Goneis the acidic, clogging milk, yoghurt and ice cream and in comes the veggies! Thebest thing about these smoothies is that you can literally throw anything in! Thismeans that you can always change the flavour, make it smoother, sweeter, chunkier,thinner - whatever you feel like whenever you fancy.

    The basic ingredients include cucumber (for the high water content), avocado (forsmoothness & creaminess), spinach (for high chlorophyll content) and herbs (for va-riety and flavour). From this base you can add capsicum/peppers for sweetnessand bite, tomatoes for that soft juiciness, softened cauliflower for a subtle creami-ness, kale (for bite) or anything else!

    And while these ingredients might sound unfamiliar in a smoothie context, but youwill soon start to crave these drinks and get a real feel for the ingredients you wantto use at different times of the day.

    Water

    We all know we should be drinking plenty of water each and every day, and althoughmany of us fail to reach our recommended daily target, we generally understand themassively important role it plays in our everyday health and wellbeing. But why? Andperhaps more importantly - if we are going to be consuming so much water, shouldntwe make sure it is the best quality?

    Water Facts

    Water is widely accepted as one of the most important considerations when creating ahealthy lifestyle. Water comprises between 50-70% of an adults body (up to 90lbs in a130lb adult!) - and when water is taken out of our diet our survival time is 2-3 days atbest so we have to make sure we are always well hydrated.

    At the very least, a 5% drop in body fluids will cause a 25-30% loss of energyin most people! In fact, even mild dehydration can slow our metabolism down by 3%- when you consider this, you can see why rehydration can support weight loss!

    Proper hydration is so important to every function of the human body (if fluids drop by just 15% we die) and dehydration is at the root cause of such a ridiculous number of symptoms. From thirst to depression to cancer to obesity to fatigue to bulimia to diges-tive problems to skin problems and so on. This is not to say that dehydration is the onlycause, but the above is just a small selection of the symptoms of repeated, daily dehy-dration.

    According to mayoclinic.com, at the very least dehydration can cause:

    - Excessive thirst

    - Fatigue

    - Headache

    - Dry mouth

    - Little or no urination- Muscle weakness

    - Dizziness/ Lightheadedness

    So water is important, but what about the quality of water?

    The average suggestion of water consumption per day ranges from 2.5 litres to 4 litres -so it is imperative that we ensure that this water is of the highest quality.

    There is a lot of discussion about the merits of alkaline water (particularly in the openpublishing medium known as the Internet) - however, regardless of who you listen toregarding this debate there is one thing that is certain:

    the process of making water alkaline increases the purity of the water by filtering out

    toxins and impurities

    For those who are not so sceptical about the benefits of the alkaline lifestyle, alkalinewater helps to neutralise acids and remove toxins from the body - it is a great cleanserand helps to detoxify our system.

    How Do We Make Alkaline Water?

    There are three main methods to make alkaline water:

    1. Using a distiller : purifies the water, increases alkalinity and removes toxins (seehere for more information)

    2. Using a water ioniser : as above, but through ionisation(see here fore more information)

    3. Adding alkaline ingredients to the water : adding pH drops, lemon juice or lime juice to water increases its alkalising effects

    In order to hydrate your body optimally, you need to drink water that is alkaline andmineral rich. Alkaline water helps to neutralise acids and remove toxins from the body.

    Alkaline water also acts as a conductor of electrochemical activity from cell to cell. Ide-ally, water should have a ph between 9 and 10, and you should be drinking 3-4 litres of it daily. As you hydrate your body properly, youll develop more of a thirst for water.

    Food cravings are often the bodys cry for water. You might already have more of athirst than you even realise - and if you are going to quench it, make sure your water isalkaline!

    Green Drink

    A key part of cleansing is the consumption of green drinks , which is the mix of pow-dered green foods (grasses, vegetables, grains and alkalising fruits) into water withpH drops. These green drinks should be consumed up to 4 times per day in 1 litreof alkaline water.

    These greens are highly concentrated mixes of the most alkaline foods on earth andare incredibly effective at alkalising the body. They provide many of the nutrientsthat are essential to our health and effectively assist in the elimination of acidic toxinsand fungus.

    To use the greens you simply mix one scoop (or teaspoon) into a litre of water, addpH drops and away you go. I personally consume up to 5 litres per day dependingon what I am doing, how I feel and what exercise I have done and it sends my en-ergy levels through the roof. The difference between the days when I do use greensand the days (that for whatever reason) I dont is abundantly clear to me.

    If you are serious about alkalising then get serious about greens!

    As with juicing there are a couple of simple rules to follow here too:

    Aim for a mixture of greens from different grasses and vegetables Consume with room temperature water, not too cold as this effects absorption Be sure to check the ingredients list for sweeteners, carob and other sugars

    exercise on the cleanseWhile cleansing it is a great idea to keep active, but try to make sure it is aerobic andnot anaerobic (resistance) training. It is not a good idea to over-exert yourself. Walk-ing, light jogging or even better rebounding is excellent.

    Exercising aerobically helps to flush your body of toxins through your sweat, breathand lymph (rebounding is especially good for pumping your lymph around yourbody!).

    Anything too strenuous such as resistance training can cause dizziness and weak-ness, and some anaerobic exercise, while good for you, can lead to the temporary

    production of acids, which is exactly what you are trying to avoid during the cleanse.Remember - our aim is to make it as easy as possible for the body to heal itself.

    Stick to exercise that, intuitively, you know will help with this!

    A Little About Rebounding...

    a typical day on the cleanseThere is no getting away from it, for the duration of the cleanse food will be the cen-tre of your day! This does not mean that you cannot live your normal life andachieve all of the other things you want to - but you will have to stay focused and di-rected on the cleanse.

    Here is what a typical day will look like:

    7am: Waking UpDrink 1 litre of water with green powder and pH drops. Take one third of all omegaoils, vitamins and minerals and any other supplements

    7am - 8am: BreakfastMake large alkaline smoothie

    8am: Morning ExerciseUndertake aerobic exercise such as walking, jogging or exercise on a rebounder

    9am-12pm: Morning-LunchDrink 1 litre of alkaline/distilled water with greens & pH drops. If hungry have moresmoothie or make an alkaline juice. Have your second serve of supplements.
