Many college freshmen feel pressure to declare a major quickly, only to reevaluate their interests and values as upperclassmen. For instance, as a freshman, did you just know you wanted to major in psychology? But now that you’re about to graduate, the world of cybersecurity is calling your name?

No need to worry — there’s a solution for you.

If you’re one of the many who has experienced a sense of dissociation from your undergraduate degree and are considering attending graduate school, here is a list of 10 graduate programs that do not require a related bachelor’s degree.

It’s not all poetry and grammar: English & Humanities.

What is English and the Humanities?

An English & Humanities degree focuses on a variety of subjects and studies that use methods ranging from close reading of literary and archival texts to the digital humanities, in order to explore the intricacies of the society, culture, and world around us.

Beyond literary studies, some of the common subjects in an English & Humanities program are:

    • Theology• Fine Arts• Philosophy• History• Linguistics• Political Science• Fashion• Design

A liberal arts education not only opens doors for employment, it’s also a good predictor of future success. The Association of American Colleges and Universities and the National Center for Higher Education Management Systems showed in a recent study that graduates with a liberal arts education (humanities or social sciences) earn more at their peak-earning ages compared to others who hold a professional or pre-professional degree.

What educational background will prepare me for success in English & Humanities?

Since a graduate degree in humanities remains vast and varied, an undergraduate degree in anything from political science to linguistics to art history could be of use when working towards a master’s in English & Humanities.

  • What is my career outlook with a master’s in English & Humanities?

Graduates of an advanced degree in English & Humanities are well equipped for careers in a multiplicity of professions. Here are several career positions that are common for graduates of a humanities-focused program:

    • Higher Education Administrator• Senior Marketing Director• Senior Communications Specialist• Industry Researcher• Technical Writer• Educator• Learning Consultant• Editor in Chief• Web Content Specialist

A recent article from The Atlantic discusses the declining numbers of students enrolling in humanities programs and the discrepancy in annual earnings but goes on to argue that an education in humanities may be more valuable than previously thought:

“But these figures overlook the importance of the humanities as a foundation for all kinds of jobs, said Moro. “They miss the point that in the long run it’s the people with the liberal arts backgrounds who end up being CEOs,” she said. Employers highly value what humanities majors learn in college, focus groups and surveys show. More than nine out of 10 say a job candidate’s capacity for thinking and communicating clearly and solving complex problems is more important than his or her major, according to an AAC&U poll. More than three-quarters favor applicants who understand other cultures.”

  • Master of Education Degree

    7

If you’re thinking about being a teacher, now is the best time to get started.

What is a Master of Education Degree?

An advanced degree in education is a chance for you to explore your options and sharpen your skills as a teacher. The education world is in need of great teachers, administrators, and curriculum and policy developers. A master’s degree in education can put you on the path to all of those positions and more.

Several studies show that many new teachers were once working in other careers. If you’re thinking that the field of education is the career change for you, you should take the plunge into an advanced education program.

What educational background will prepare me for success in the field of education?

Many people decide post-graduation or even mid-career that they want to become a teacher. Did you know that most education degrees do not require a related bachelor’s degree or teaching experience? Individuals who have varying professional backgrounds like psychology, English, history, sociology, philosophy, biology, and criminal justice can bring a lot of diversity of experience to the classroom.

What is my career outlook if I pursue a master’s in education?

An M.Ed. will help you to become an effective teacher. Advanced education programs place a heavy emphasis on pedagogy, professional knowledge, and educational technology. If you are new to education, getting a master’s degree will give you an in depth understanding o f educational theory and the means and skill set to translate this information into practical instructional skills.

There is a growing need for teachers all over the nation, so job placement rates look exceptional for aspiring educators. In fact, a recent Executive Order from the Governor of Virginia stated that “Virginia is now facing a severe and growing shortage of qualified teachers, and in some high-poverty divisions the shortages are reaching crisis levels. The number of unfilled teacher positions across the state has increased by 40 percent over the past 10 years. In 2016, two months into the school year more than 1,000 fully funded positions remained vacant. This trend must be reversed in order to secure the Commonwealth’s future economic growth and prosperity.”

Better PayIn many fields, advanced degrees often translate into more pay, and education is no different. In fact, in many schools and school districts, an advanced degree often means an automatic pay raise for teachers. Depending on your school or school district, the increase in pay may be more profitable in the long run, even after accounting for tuition.

Meet RequirementsSome school systems may already require its teachers to take some graduate level courses to maintain their teaching certificate. Pursuing a master’s degree can be a way to make those courses “count” for more.

Greater RespectA master’s degree in education tells people that you are knowledgeable, valuable, hard-working and committed to your field. Teachers who have master’s degrees are highly respected among their colleagues, administrators, and parents. You may even find that having a master’s degree helps when being considered for tenure.

Expand Your OptionsNot all of the payoff of a master’s in education is felt in the classroom. For some, a master’s degree opens the door to other education-related opportunities as well, like becoming a school administrator or a mentor to other teachers. It may even provide options outside of the school setting, such as a textbook author, corporate trainer, career counselor, school technology consultant, education policy advocate, or curriculum developer, to name a few.

  • Master of Science in Health Care Management

Goodmanagersarehardtofind:Beoneofthefewbygetting a degree in Health Care Management.

    What is health care management?

Health care management is a practice that focuses on the fast-paced and dynamic health care field, which equips professionals with the skills to manage and direct within an ever-changing health care environment.

In an ever growing society, health care is always a necessity. The diversity of the health care setting has expanded, and there are now more career opportunities than in just the public health realm.

What educational background will prepare me for success in a health care management program?

There are no real prerequisites for admission into a health care management program as the kind of bachelor’s degree held is open ended, although most students come with a background in business, nursing, health science, or social service. If you are drawn to altruistic jobs but don’t necessarily want to be involved in patient care, health care management could be a good fit for you.

What is my career outlook if I pursue a master’s in health care management?

One common misconception surrounding the field of health care management (HCM) is that most jobs revolve around clinical work. While the majority of HCM graduates stay in health care, the employment opportunities are actually diverse and varied. Many end up in hospital health systems or in military health systems.

Specifically, health care management is also a good fit for nurses looking to transition into management or who want to move on from patient care. This field could also be good for administrators, supervisors, or assistant directors looking to advance in their career — even if they have no experience in the health care field.

With a master’s in HCM, a few of the career possibilities are:

    • Nurse Manager• Head of Policy/Advocacy• Registered Nurse• Clinical Instructor• Senior Data Analyst• Department Manager• Consultant• Health Information Management• Health Care Association• Insurance Plans

Understanding Marymount’s Master of Science in Health Care Management

Marymount University calls its HCM department Health Care Management and Legal Studies. And the M.S. in Health Care Management aims to prepare managers to competently perform in the highly competitive health services marketplace in the Washington, D.C. area. The program is designed for students with experience in either health care or business who wish to become hospital administrators, managed care coordinators, financial/operational managers in health care facilities and managed care groups, or physician practices.

At Marymount, you can choose to pursue the single degree in Health Care Management, or you can choose to enroll in one of two dual-degree programs:

    • Health Care Management/Business Administration (M.S./M.B.A.)

    • Health Care Management/Information Technology (M.S./M.S.)

Adding an MBA to your HCM degree gives you a competitive edge, providing you with even more informed business skills often needed to understand the business operation side of a department.

As for the HCM and IT dual degree, the benefits are that the increasing use of electronic medical system is on an electronic medical records system (EMR), and being familiar with IT provides you with the tools to be more technologically savvy or to pursue up-and-coming telemedicine employment opportunities.

  • Master of Arts in Interior Design

    11

Interior Design is the blending of art and science.

    What is interior design?

Interior design is a multi-faceted profession in which creative and technical solutions are applied within a structure to achieve a built interior environment. The interior design process follows a systematic and coordinated methodology, including research, analysis, and integration of knowledge into the creative process, whereby the needs and resources of the client are satisfied to produce an interior space that fulfills the project goals.

According to the NCIDQ, “Interior design is the art and science of understanding people’s behavior to create functional spaces within a building. Decoration is the furnishing or adorning of a space with fashionable or beautiful things. In short, interior designers may decorate, but decorators do not design. Interior designers apply creative and technical solutions within a structure that are functional, attractive and beneficial to the occupants’ quality of life and culture.”

It’s complicated. It’s dynamic. It’s constantly changing — interior design is a profession that works to enhance the human experience with good design that changes lives.

What educational background will prepare me for success in interior design?

A graduate degree in Interior Design without a related bachelor’s degree can require some additional class requirements or program approach, but nevertheless, this creative degree can be attained by individuals with backgrounds in the arts and humanities or the social or technical sciences. Some programs may require a portfolio for admission.

Whether you are just beginning a career as an interior designer or advancing your current professional interior design knowledge and skills, Marymount University can fit your needs – offering two tracks in our Interior Design program.

    • The first professional degree is a 66-credit academic track for those with a baccalaureate degree not in interior design or architecture. Students are subject to graduate student academic policies and procedures as stated in this catalog while taking the undergraduate leveling courses.• The post-professional degree is a 34-credit academic track for those with an accredited undergraduate degree in interior design or architecture.

What is my career outlook if I pursue a master’s in interior design?

Employment of interior designers in the U.S. is expected to grow about 4 percent from 2014-2024. This is a bit slower than the average of other occupations. However, employment of interior designers in specialized design services such as hospitality, healthcare, and commercial/corporate design are expected to grow 8 percent. 25 percent of firms of all sizes and specialties intend to hire new employees in the next year.

Job seekers should look for employment opportunities in high-income areas (like D.C.!) because wealthy individuals are more likely to remodel or renovate their spaces. And while the studio and classroom afford you opportunities to gain theoretical knowledge and technical skills, an internship/practicum provides valuable practical experience. Practicums and Internships are available with nationally recognized architectural and design firms, furniture and interior retailers, contract designers, and other organizations around the Washington D.C. area.

    Technologyrunstheworld:Beapartofthefuture bypursuingthefieldofCybersecurity.

    What is cybersecurity?

Cybersecurity is the protection of computer systems from the theft and damage to their hardware, software or information, as well as from disruption of the services they provide.

As long as industries use computers and technology to run their businesses, there will be a need for cybersecurity. Technology continues to permeate areas of daily life in more ways than just your computer, thus making the need for defense against hackers a continuing priority. Infected devices are a threat to other systems, and even if one is compromised, it is extremely likely to make others vulnerable as well.

What educational background will prepare me for success in a cybersecurity program?

While graduate programs like Business and IT may require work experience in their respective fields, creative, detail-oriented thinkers from different backgrounds and fields could bring new skill sets to these highly technical industries.

What is my career outlook if I pursue a master’s in cybersecurity?

In a survey recently conducted by the SANS Institute, 49 percent of respondents — cybersecurity professionals — reportedly make $100,000 or more. Further breaking down the data, they report that the highest figures are “mostly attributed to those with management roles, while the largest single group (23 percent) selected the $80,000–$99,999 range, representing those with administrator or engineering roles.”

The SANS Institute also found that while experience in the field is a sure path to increased salary, professionals with master’s degrees get higher salaries sooner. Consider the following graph:

    *See graph on next page

  • The difference of these salaries over time widens the gap even further. While graduate school is an investment, it pays for itself over and over again with a high salary earned earlier in your career.

Join a community of leaders in health professions with a Doctor of Physical Therapy.

What is a physical therapy professional?

Physical therapy professionals, according to American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), are “health care professionals who diagnose and treat individuals of all ages, from newborns to the very oldest, who have medical problems or other health-related conditions that limit their abilities to move and perform functional activities in their daily lives.”

“PTs examine each individual and develop a plan using treatment techniques to promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability. In addition, PTs work with individuals to prevent the loss of mobility before it occurs by developing fitness- and wellness-oriented programs for healthier and more active lifestyles.”

What educational background will prepare me for success in a DPT program?

With the necessary undergraduate prerequisites, an individual from any bachelor’s degree, like a related sport science degree or an unrelated history degree, can apply and attain a doctor of physical therapy.

What is my career outlook if I pursue an advanced degree in physical therapy?

There is over a 30 percent projected job growth from 2014 to 2024 for physical therapy professionals. This assertion is a growth rate estimated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Research shows that PT’s job growth is a result from the care needed for aging baby boomers as well as the high level of stress and activity seen in everyday life. Specifically, the DMV is a growing area and seems to have many job opportunities for physical therapy professionals in the coming few years.

The median annual physical therapist salary is $81,287, as of February 2017, with a range usually between $74,883-$88,197, however, this can vary widely depending on a variety of factors such as location or years of experience.

Understanding Marymount University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy Program

Marymount’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program has a modified problem-based learning approach, which involves hands-on problem solving, practical application, lectures, lab activities, and integration of “real life” clinical experiences. The student-directed, active-learning component revolves around commonly occurring patient problems.

  • Interested in research, public policy, and law? Consider Forensic & Legal Psychology.

What is forensic & legal psychology?

Forensic and legal psychology (or psychology and law) involves the application of scientific and professional aspects of psychology to questions and issues relating to law and the legal system. This field encompasses contributions made in a number of different areas - research, practice, public policy and teaching/training among them - from a variety of orientations within the field of psychology.

What educational background will prepare me for success a forensic & legal psychology program?

There is no specific undergraduate major requirement, but having a major or minor in psychology will be of benefit. It is, however, very helpful if applicants have taken a few courses in psychology, criminal justice, and criminology.

While sociology or criminal justice can serve as good foundations for a forensic and legal psychology master’s, many degrees are accepted.

What is my career outlook if I pursue a master’s in forensic & legal psychology?

Some research suggests that “Forensic psychology salaries vary widely, based on education, experience, and geographic location.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn’t provide salary information for forensic psychologists but reports a median salary of $72,580 per year for psychologists overall. The employment of psychologists is expected to increase 19 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average rate of growth for all occupations. This anticipated growth is due to the expected increasing demand for psychological services in social service organizations and in the criminal justice system. Psychologists who have a doctoral degree in an applied specialty, such as forensic psychology, have the best prospects for finding a job.

While the figures above will generally reflect professionals with a doctorate in forensic psychology, individuals who pursue a master’s degree can often find work in intelligence analysis; local, state, and federal law enforcement (e.g., FBI, Secret Service, DEA, ATF, etc); corrections; probation and parole, crime analysis; social science research; mitigation investigation; sentencing advocacy; trial consulting; offender management; victim advocacy/assistance; child advocacy; and policy analysis.

Understanding Marymount University’s Forensic & Legal Psychology Program

Marymount’s Forensic & Legal Psychology program is interdisciplinary and combines study in criminal justice, law, and public policy, in addition to the many subfields of psychology. It addresses questions of value, such as how best to achieve fairness and justice in the American adversarial legal system, as well as empirical issues such as the origins of criminal behavior, problems with eyewitness testimony, evaluation of threats against public figures, personalities of political leaders, the origins of terrorism, evaluation and treatment of offenders, and the effectiveness of trial consultation.

Each course incorporates an ethics component to encourage you to grapple with the extremely complicated issues involved in a career in forensic and legal psychology.

Once enrolled in the M.A. program, students may apply for and complete a concentration in Intelligence Studies, which provides the knowledge and skills necessary to be competitive in the Intelligence Community and the private-sector companies that support it.

Note: Marymount University is the first Washington D.C.-area university to offer the Master of Arts in Forensic & Legal Psychology. In addition, the Forensic and Legal Psychology program hosts multiple events during the year (e.g., Annual Appreciation Dinner, Speaker Seminar Series); provides extensive networking opportunities to students; employs adjuncts who are distinguished professionals in their field; and maintains connections with various law enforcement agencies, court systems, and other justice-related organizations in the Metropolitan D.C. region.

Undergraduate degree holders of any field can work towards a master’s in a counseling program, however, if you are still in your undergraduate institution, classes such as abnormal psychology, theories of counseling, and other psychology classes may be helpful in the transition.
