What are the laws about animal testing?

The government will only issue a licence for the use of animals in research if there is no valid alternative that can be used.

If granted a licence, laboratories must follow rules set by the government about how the animals are kept, used and killed.

To use animals in scientific research, organizations must apply to the government for a licence.

The future of animal testing

Many people hope that the number of organisms used in scientific procedures can be reduced in the future.

Alternative methods are already being used by scientists, wherever possible.

The government is also currently funding research to improve and develop alternative methods.

Choosing a career in biology

Many science careers involve working with the public, working outdoors or from an office environment. Biology-based careers don’t always involve working in a laboratory.
