    HISTORIC REGISTRATION - IMPORTANT NOTICE

Financial members of the F.O.C.C. are reminded of the following requirements as per The New Code of Practice, effective 1st July 2012, when presenting their logbook(s) for resigning and/or the issuing of a new logbook. Members have until 31st December 2015to ensure that their Historic Registration remains active for the next clubs financial year.

In order to avoid any unnecessary delays, as experienced last year, when almost everyone wanted their logbooks attended to on the same night, it would be appreciated if this exercise be spread over the next three club meetings starting at 7.00pm.

    Mandatory Requirements

    1. New F.O.C.C. membership renewal receipt.

    2. Logbook(s).

    3. Current registration papers.

    4. Statutory declaration. (Unless you are a new member on Historic Registration)

    5. Left Hand Drive vehicles – Certificate of Exemption.

Remember it is your responsibility to ensure that the correct paperwork is presented or your log book will not be signed by any of the Authorized Officers.

The Statutory Declaration must be completed in full and in a legible manner. Any lines not used should be “Zed” off. Multiple vehicles can be used on the one form.

If the Statutory Declaration form is not completed correctly, it will not be accepted and your log book will not be signed. Do not send the Statutory Declaration to the club Secretary. It must be presented when upgrading your log book by one of the Authorized Officer.

REMEMBER If you do not have your log book signed by 31st December 2015 then you will be driving illegally ie unregistered and uninsured. There are very heavy penalties imposed if you are caught.

  • 4 THE PRESIDENTS CORNER

The recent Pinery fire was a very severe event but as Pinery is halfway between Balaklava and Mallala and the fire went south and east Balaklava was not affected. One of the family members lives in Freeling and she, two children and a dog had to leave the area for relatives in Adelaide. The following day with no electricity in Freeling saw the family headed for Wallaroo to stay until the power was back on. Kim’s husband works in Roxby Downs so Kim had to make the decision to leave Freeling on her own with some help from her brother who works nearby. On the night of the fire Gill and I had to drive to Munno Para and we went to and from via Port Wakefield as we expected the Balaklava to Mallala Road to be restricted or closed. I drove Balaklava to Mallala (and beyond) the other day and the devastation along the road is pretty complete. Houses where people/farmers lived along the road are just burnt out hulks. The walls were built of local stone and cement or bricks and they are still standing with chared insides. There were trees along the road and a lot of them were burnt at the base and had fallen down with branches very close to the road. Later there were crews out cutting them back from the road along with a 25 KPH speed limit in place for a far too great of a distance as happens in too many places. They put the signs out for a days work not just what they can do in two hours and my other gripe is that they will put out a lower limit first with no speed up sign when if they had any sense of compassion they would work a bit harder and put up the speed up signs out first and then put the limit signs out that’s if they put up the speed up signs at all.

When I drove home after the FHMC (Federation of Historic Motoring Club) meeting Saturday night (28/11) a large tree had fallen over two thirds of the road and there was a team there cutting it up to clear the road. That was a good one because with the blue and red flashing lights you only had to slow down in the workplace area. There were some blackened paddocks where there was still some vegetation to hold the soil together and in other paddocks the vegetation to below ground level was burnt off and the paddocks were just red soil which with the winds of the day had blown on to the road and beyond. Because of the sand drifts there were still reduced speed limits on the road three days later.

The winds had other effects as well. There had been a couple of accidents at the railway crossing between Two Wells and Mallala one of which I only just missed seeing and because the armco had been damaged on the LHS going north there was an 80 KPH limit in the area. On the night of 28/11 the speed limit north bound was 100 KPH and the speed limit south bound was 80 KPH. When you get benefits like that you do not stop and put the sign up that the wind blew over.

The Mallala race track was damaged on the northern perimeter but it is still an operational facility however my namesake Gordon S has a big clean-up job in Clem Smith’s Motor Museum as there is ash everywhere inside the Museum.

When I write this I do not know if any of our FOCC members were affected by the fire.

    PRESIDENTS CORNER

    Article Written By Gordon Cowley

The Club Woman and Man of the year have been decided and the trophies are in hand. The top points for the trophies were 165 points with the cut off being the November general meeting. The points are collected for December one year to the end of November in the following year. There were 16 members who gained 100 or more points. The trophies will be handed out at the December General meeting. There a few in the FOCC that believe that none of the committee members should be eligible to get points in the trophy but as the committee members attend the events and meetings and most of the other persons in the club have the same option I think that it should be left as is.

The committee meeting for a final analysis of the constitution and Rules of Management will be mid December and that will put the club vote back to February 2016.

Come March AGM the FOCC will have a new President as I will not be contesting that position at the next FOCC AGM. I hope to have the constitutional and rules of management changes all approved by then but I will still be here to shepherd the work through the acceptance by the OCBA (Office of Consumer and Business Affairs) and the DPTI (Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure). When it is all approved copies will have to go to the FHMC and CAMS.

  • 5ON A LIGHTER NOTE BY MR GULLIBLE

    Hi Everyone!

So just when you think you can see the light at the end of the tunnel, along comes the “It just takes longer than expected” then some rotten fella blew out the candle at the other end of the tunnel. It looks like the merry time of Christmas is apt to delay approval till next year. It is expected that by December, the Engineers have got to preliminary design stage and need to send their drawings to the Architect for consideration before it comes back and gets final engineering so it can be drawn up by??? And will these be working drawings (the drawings that the Tradies need to be able to quote and the builder uses to know how to build the structure). That is extra! That is all before it goes to the Private certifier.

So it is off to the sheds to live till the New Year and the house construction starts, or is it?

    Council question of the week:

“Because your proposal includes a balcony/deck area and it is more than 1 metre above natural ground level, we are going to have to put the application out on category 2 public notification meaning that we would have to notify all the adjoining neighbours (7 of). Category 2 process incurs an additional fee of $103.00.”

Response: Only 2 neighbours can see the deck and they are more than ½ a kilometre away. Do you provide binoculars for them? Also the deck(s) you refer to are level with and below the natural ground level. In this case the ground level is being removed to be lower than the natural ground (wording in your clause!)””

ON A LIGHTER NOTE BY MR GULLIBLE

    Article Written By Lee Richardson

Reply: “Due to a recent legal action, the category 2 process will no longer be required. We will refund the $103.00.”

Upgrade the progress to. “Better brakes than a Bedford Truck”

    The Shed Outbuilding.

Yippee. The shed slabs are down and I must say they look good. These sheds are a reverse structure (shed on slab as opposed to slab poured into the shed).

So the concrete trucks had no trouble what so ever, 5 cubic metre trucks with a 4 cubic metre load so the concrete did not slop out the back when going up the hill. Now it is just a matter of assembling the sheds. But where are they?

It is nearing Christmas and the manufacturers are flat out. Although my sheds were ordered 2 months ago I must be a low priority or something. They are so busy that they won’t even answer the phone or return messages. Not to be political but someone told me there was a big unemployment problem. So there are plenty of people to employ to assist with manufacturing. I mean to say there is little difference between a shed and a Holden. It is just sheet metal.

The latest is they may turn up before Christmas but unlikely! So am I going to get a caravan till the sheds are built or what. It seems fate has a way of sorting something’s out so I came across someone I have known for some years that is looking for a tenant for his house. Looks like I am moving to Gawler.

    Something To Think About!

Does our club have a community conscience? Is it a possibility that the FOCC knock together a team or two to help those affected by the Pinery fire? I am not talking money; I may be talking gathering unneeded items or physically helping.

There are 16 families who now have nothing. Insurance may cover much but I can speak from experience when I say “It is never enough”.

  • 6 HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT ...

Paul and Gay Zazryn have been involved in the Classic Car scene for over 35 years.

We have been the sole Australian distributors of Dunlop Wire Wheels since 2002 and LA Custom Wire Wheels since 2006 so have had many years experience in the wire wheel business.

Previous to that Paul and Gay started and ran a large independent Jaguar sales and service business for 25 years so they really know their classic cars.

We are the only business in Australia concentrating exclusively on the sale of wire wheels and accessories and are now stocking a range of classic tyres to suit.

“We listen to our customers and try to stock items that they are finding hard to procure. Items such as classic tyres, splined hub pullers, copper / hide hammers, special spinners, etc.”

Over the years we have made some great contacts both here in Australia and also overseas so we can most likely find that part you have been having trouble buying.

Whatever your needs for whatever car you have there is a good chance we can supply wire wheels or classic alloy wheels to suit at very competitive prices.

A few years ago we moved into a large new warehouse enabling us the room to carry more stock. We usually have in stock around 2000 wire wheels, 1000 hubs and spinners as well as a large range of hammers, tools, pullers etc.

Carrying a large stock enables us to look after our customers and usually supply wheels the same day from stock.

    CLASSIC WIRE

WHEELSItems we don’t stock or have run out of can either be supplied on our next order or by air freight at reasonable rates. To ensure we have wheels in stock when you need them we suggest placing an order with a small deposit and we will hold them until your restoration is finished or you need them. Paul and Gay try to get out to as many club events, concours and historic race meetings with their display trailer to show people a great cross section of the products they carry. At historic race meetings you will often see Gay manning the stand while Paul is out racing his F5000 race car (his mistress) so go and have a chat to them about wheels or race cars.

  • 7ENGINE OIL BIBLE 3

    Flushing Oils

These are special compound oils that are very, very thin. They almost have the consistency of tap water both when cold and hot. Typically they are 0W/20 oils. Their purpose is for cleaning out all the gunk which builds up inside an engine.

Note: Some hybrid vehicles now require 0W20, so if you’re a hybrid driver, check your owner’s manual. Honda switched to recommending 0W20 in 2011 to meet their CAFE ratings (thinner oil gives less drag on engine parts which improves - fractionally - the mpg). If the figures for the 2010 models are compared to their 2011 counterparts, cars like the Element and CR-V received a tiny mpg boost in the official figures despite being the exact same car. They achieved this by remapping the gearbox shift points and dropping the cold viscosity rating on the oil. In reality, unless you live in northern Alaska, or do an above average number of cold-start short journeys, 5W20 ought to be more than suitable.

Do I Need A Flushing Oil?

Unless there’s something seriously wrong with an engine, like it’s been filled it with milk or shampoo, there is not normally a need for a flushing oil. If you do decide to do an oil flush, there’s two ways of doing it. You can either use a dedicated flushing oil, or a flushing additive in your existing oil. Either way it’s wise to change the filter first so you have a clean one to collect all the gunk. (This typically means draining the oil or working fast). Once you have a new filter in place, and the flushing oil (or flushing solution) in there, run the engine at a fast idle for about 20 minutes. Finally, drain all this off (and marvel at the crap that comes out with it), replace the oil filter again, refill with a good synthetic oil and voila! Clean(er) engine. For the curious amongst you, looking in the oil filter that was attached when you did the flush will be an educational exercise in the sort of debris that used to be in your engine.

Of course, like most things nowadays, there’s a condition attached when using flushing oils. In an old engine you really don’t want to remove all the deposits. Some of these deposits help seal rings, lifters and even some of the flanges between the heads, covers, pan and the block, where the gaskets are thin. I have heard of engines with over 280,000km that worked fine, but when flushed, failed in a month because the blow-by past the scraper ring (now really clean) contaminated the oil and ruined the rod bearings.

    Using Diesel Oil For Flushing

A question came up some time ago about using diesel-rated oils to flush out petrol engines. The idea was that because of the higher detergent levels in diesel engine oil, it might be a good cleaner / flusher for a non-diesel engine.

Whilst most of the diesel oil specification oils can be used in old petrol engines for cleaning, a low specification oil should be used to ensure that the engine is not over-cleaned, which can cause a loss of compression (for example). Generally speaking, an SAE 15W/40 diesel engine oil for about 500 miles might do the trick.

    ENGINE OIL

BIBLE 3Which Oil Should You Buy?

That all depends on the car, the owner’s pocketbook and how the car is intended to be driven and serviced. All brands claim theirs offers the best protection available - until they launch a superior alternative. It’s like washing powders - whiter than white until new Super-Nukem-Dazzo comes out. For most motorists and most cars, a quality mainstream oil is the best, like Castrol GTX. Moving up a step, you could look at Duckhams QXR, Castrol Protection Plus and GTX3 Lightec. The latter two of these are designed specifically for engines with catalytic converters. They’re also a good choice for GTi’s and turbo engines. Go up a step again and you’re looking at synthetic oils aimed squarely at the performance market like Mobil-1.

To help owners navigate through the maze of oils available, there’s a site available called the motor oil evaluator, that aims to lessen the confusion with a relatively balanced scoring system based on published specifications such as viscosity and pour point. It’s a good starting point for more in-depth info.

The Question Of Phosphorus & Zinc

Phosphorus (a component of ZDDP - Zinc Dialkyl-Dithio-Phosphate) is the key component for valve train protection in an engine and 1600ppm (parts per million) used to be the standard for phosphorus in engine oil. In 1996 the EPA forced that to be dropped to 800ppm and then more recently (2004?) to 400ppm - a quarter of the original spec. Valvetrains and their components are not especially cheap to replace and this drop in phosphorus content has been a problem for many engines (especially those with flat-tappet type cams). So why was the level dropped? Money. Next to lead, it’s the second most destructive substance to shove through a catalytic converter. The US government mandated a 150,000 mile liftime on catalytic converters and the quickest way to do that was to drop phosphorous levels and bugger the valvetrain problem. Literally.

In the US, Mobil 1 originally came out with the 0W40 as a ‘European Formula’ as it was always above 1000 ppm. This initially got them out of the 1996 800ppm jam and knowledgeable consumers sought it out for obvious reasons. Their 15W50 has also maintained a very high level of phosphorus and all of the extended life Mobil synthetics now have at least 1000ppm. How do they get away with this? They’re not classified as energy/fuel conserving oils and thus do not interfere with the precious government CAFE (corporate average fuel economy) ratings.

This also means that they don’t get the coveted ratings of other oils but they do protect your valvetrain. The same rule of thumb is true for racing oils like Royal Purple - because they’re not classified as energy / fuel conserving, it would seem they still contain good quantities of ZDDP.

Royal Purple is a popular oil for Mustang enthusiasts, as it’s formulated for performance vehicles that are looking to maximize results at the track or drag strip.

In fact, as a general rule-of-thumb, staying away from XX-30 oils and going to 10W-40 or higher might be the way to go if you have an older engine. 10W-40 and above is generally also not considered to be ‘gas saving’ and like the Mobil example above, doesn’t mess with the CAFE rating.

If you live in England, Castrol market a product with ZDDP in the product description - ‘Castrol Classic Oil With ZDDP Anti-Wear Additive’ although it’s not mainstream enough to be available everywhere. You’ll have to find a specialist dealer - Castrol Classics.

    SMASA EVENT PINERY BUSHFIRE

A SMASA (Street Machine Association of SA) member with contacts within the Port Adelaide Enfield Council area where the mayor Garry Johansen is supportive of motoring endevours has organised a car show for Sunday 13/12.

It will be to raise cash for the Pinery Bushfire Appeal with a gold coin donation for both vehicles on display and the public lookers.

There is a facebook site on the display with lots of likes. I am going to support the event and ask that some other FOCC members also support the event.

The event site is on Military Road next to and south of Fort Glanville which is on the corner of Bower and Military Roads. The display is from 9.00 A.M. to 3 P.M.

We will have to join up outside the area so that we can drive in and park together. There is a small shopping centre south of the event on the sea side of Military Road and we could start from there at 8:30AM. This is not a FOCC “membership point’s” event.

NEW MUSTANGSOLD OUTThe pony express has galloped into town as Ford Australia has taken possession of its first shipment of its rear-wheel drive Mustang sports cars ahead of its official on-sale date in January.

The first batch were unloaded at Melbourne’s Appleton Dock Wednesday morning with three more ships carrying the rest of the initial allocation due to arrive within the next three days.

The blue oval has received 20,000 expressions of interest with about 4,000 customers having paid deposits, which accounts for all available vehicles for 2016.

“We are simply overwhelmed and humbled by the reception to Mustang thus far, which is probably our closest equivalent to The Beatles first trip to Australia,” Ford President and CEO, Graeme Whickman said.

The Mustang will be available in two body types, a fastback and a convertible. The fastback makes ups about 88 per cent of those sales already accounted for.

Australia is one of the world’s biggest buyers of performance cars per capita and in true form 86 per cent of Mustang buyers have opted for the V8-powered GT version over the brand’s four-cylinder EcoBoost variant - Ford is not offering the V6-powered model in Australia.

    The 5.0-litre V8 produces 303kW and 525Nm while the 2.3-litre four-cylinder turbo EcoBoost model puts out a healthy 233kW and 432Nm.

The Fastback variant comes with the choice of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, while the convertible is available in auto only.

The new sports cars are also kitted out with the brand’s new SYNC2 infotainment system along with rain sensing wipers, sat-nav, reversing camera and 19-inch alloys as standard.

The Mustang’s popularity is buoyed by the company’s sharp pricing offering the EcoBoost model from $44,990 (plus on-road costs) and the V8-powered GT variant from $54,990 (plus on-road costs).

USE THE FORK, LUKE - Make every meal a little bit more more civilized with this set of 3 utensils featuring lightsaber handles. The fork features Luke’s lightsaber hilt, the spoon features Yoda’s, and the knife features Vader’s. We were pondering whether the choice of implements for the characters indicated anything, like the knife is there to tear things apart, but we couldn’t really make any connections. Except that Yoda’s really old. He probably likes pudding. Pistachio. Note: These are the hilts only. They do not light up. They are not “actual” lightsabers. This is for the best. It’d be hard to use a fork that cut things every time you went to skewer it. And imagine trying to eat ice cream with a lightsaber spoon....

    AMERICAN RESTORATIONS

The series focuses on Rick’s Restorations, a company owned and operated by Las Vegas area metal artist and antique restoration expert Rick Dale, who has been restoring various vintage items for almost 30 years.

Dale and his company first appeared on the History reality television series Pawn Stars, in that show’s first season episode “Time Machines,” and in nine subsequent episodes in which he restored numerous decades-old items for the Harrisons (owners of the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop where Pawn Stars takes place), including vending machines, gas pumps, barber chairs, motorcycles, and jukeboxes.

According to Dale, who claims to emphasize a great attention to detail in his work, his shop typically works on 6 - 12 projects at any given time.

Although he and his staff restore the items brought in by customers themselves, they are shown consulting other merchants and experts for parts, and calling in freelance employees, such as Bob, a metalworker, when their workload requires it.

In addition to items brought in by customers, Dale will also purchase items himself to restore from pickers, such as the toy train he purchases in “Buttered Up.”

The range of services offered by Rick’s Restorations is limited by financial concerns. Although Dale has a positive view of his staff’s abilities, he observes that they are sometimes difficult to manage, in particular his younger brother, Ron.

  • 14 PAST EVENTS

We had 70 persons in total on the run and we had one group of three and one group of five which caused a bit of a hiccup on the boat. We ended up with two single seats at two different tables and a couple with no where for them to sit together. The organisation found another table and set them up together. We had 20 FOCC members and the rest of the numbers were made up from members of the Triple A Club, a Castlemaine Club, the early Ford V8 Club and the Chrysler Restorers Club. We also had the FHMC President and his wife and the FHMC Secretary on his own.

Our first stop was to Melba’s Chocolates at Woodside and there was a fair bit of tasting and buying there. Some people went next door to the cheese place and did a bit of tasting and buying there as well.

We then drove to Murray Bridge via the old highway and the Captain Proud departed a bit behind time. We still got our three hours and a meal however. A meal or two turned up late but the choices were good and the meals went down well. It was quite brisk outside and most of us sat and talked inside the cabin. Some did try it outside for a while but no-one stayed out for long.

We had an interesting comentary along the way and there was much to see along the river. We went upstream from Murray Bridge and then returned to the starting wharf. I moved around and chatted at most of the tables and we had onboard a past FOCC member and his wife. They own a ZD Fairlane and after a move to the south of Adelaide they dropped out of the FOCC. They had done the Bay to Birdwood Classic and some other Motorfest runs.

Thanks to Lee for organising another interesting FOCC Motorfest event. That is now two events with high attendance levels at both events. Good work Lee.

    YANKALLILLA CRUISE

Alice and I decided to take the Lincoln on the annual Shannons Yankallilla Cruise on Sunday the 15th November.

A large group of various types and makes of cars assembled at Castle Plaza shopping Centre on South Road for the trip to Yankalilla.

We were cheered by large groups of people along the way and soon arrived at our destination.

We were marshalled onto the oval were there was lots of live entertainment, stalls and other vehicles on display.

It was a most enjoyable day at an event that is well organized and a real treat to attend. Will be on our calendar again for next year.
