CAMTORQUE CATERING TO THE NEEDS OF ALL FORD VEHICLE ENTHUSIASTS
October 7th 2016 marked the end of an Australian icon. The Ford Motor Company closed its’
doors in Australia for the last time. A very sad day for the people of Australia. Ford started its’ life in 1959 at the newly built plant in Broadmeadows in Victoria. Before the production line officially started the tank Fairlane was built by hand and the first Fairlane rolled out in late August 1959. This vehicle
was to be used by an executive at Ford for the first few years of life and came out with some very special extras. Factory right hand drive with a column shift on the right hand side of the column and a blue sapphire diamond dot radio with the diamond implanted in the dash. In the boot resides a Stampco electric refridgerator to keep drinks etc cool whilst on a road trip. To save time on long trips, an auxillary 12 gallon fuel tank resides under the rear parcel shelf so fuel stops are less frequent. A Thunderbird 352 cubic inch V8 engine powers a 2 speed Fordomatic transmission to a 9 inch tank diff to the 15
inch wheels for a smooth boat ride.
December 2016
Alf Doherty worked for the Ford Motor Company in the early 1960’s and when he
went for his pay Ford said they couldn’t pay him at that time. His response was “I’ll take the Fairlane”. After some debate the Fairlane became Alfs’ and it has remained in the family since then. In November 1961 a receipt from the Ford Motor Company was issued and a certificate of registration can be found in the glove box of the car and are the original documents. As children growing up, Alf said to us “touch the car and I’ll chop your bloody fingers off”. Alf passed away in 2007 and left the tank to his beloved wife Dorothy. In December 2014 Dorothy passed away and left the tank for the family to sort out it’s fate. Being the second owner of this vehicle the family have decided that it is now time for it to be passed on to a new owner.
This car is in absolutely immaculate condition.
The paintwork, interior and mechanicals are original and in impeccable condition. It has 58,688 genuine miles on the clock. The first Ford Fairlane is now on the market after being in the same family for over 55 years. This is an iconic motor car that is absolutely a part of the Ford Motor Company and the Australian motoring history. Please find attached some photographs of the car. If you are interested in discussing this further my name is Cliff Doherty and I can be contacted on: 0412 463 289. Yours sincerely; Cliff Doherty

THIS MONTHS PROFILE PICK
Clinton Jacobs is a founding member of the FOCC. (More about that subject in a later issue.) At the time of the founding of the club, he had P-plates on a Mark 1 Cortina. Boy, has he owned some cars! The Mark 1 Cortina was followed by an XK Falcon, then an XP Falcon and an XA GT Falcon which he still owns. The GT was used for motorkhanas, motor rally cross on dirt, and street drags, as well as launching the boat, hill climbs and auto cross at Tailem Bend which was part dirt, part bitumen. When he bought this car, which was one year old at the time, the car salesman told him that he wouldn’t be able to handle the car, and he was right, he couldn’t! Two Mark 1 Cortinas were used for drag racing. 13 different 105E Anglias found their way into the shed at some stage or the other. One of them had a 350 V8 in it. Another had a Falcon 6 under the bonnet while yet another had a 2L Ford motor in it. These were used for racing and club competitions. Three GZ Fords graced the shed at some stage or other, too. They were used for dirt or on the road. One was green, another was red and the other was white. The same number plate was attached to whichever one was working at the time. A Landau Coupe made its way into the shed, too. It was a 2-door LTD which he used for racing at Mallala. This was the only car which went right round the speedo when he was racing!
In the early days of the club, there were a lot of competitions for the members. Clinton was Competition Secretary for many years. He’s raced at Mallala, Adelaide International Raceway including the drags and street meets, Tailem Bend, Reynella, Collingrove Hillclimb and mud sprints at private properties. Once, the club was invited to join the drag racing at the Weapons Research Establishment.
Sacrilege! He’s even owned and raced HQ Holdens!! He bought one at Port Pirie and drove it home. He intended to get it home to Woodville Gardens, but he blew it up by the White Horse Inn! Other cars he’s owned are 2 Ford Courier Utes, one on diesel and the other on gas and petrol. In the shed, at the moment, are a V8 Transit Van, a ’62 Ford Comet, an XP Falcon Coupe, another GT which is a basket case, now, and a ’35 Hupmobile. The trouble with owning such a variety of cars awaiting restoration, is that you are spread pretty thin when it comes to finding and buying parts. So many different cars, so many different parts needed. Oh, there’s a Ford Ranger with 6-speed manual gear box, 2011 model, in the shed, too. He has at least 6 sheds around the property. Clinton has always had motors lying around. He is used to putting engines into cars, changing diffs and messing with engines. He likes Windsor and Cleveland motors. His father, another founding member, was doing the same when Clinton was a boy. He can use the oxy set, spray paint, build engines and build cars. As a club member, Clinton has served on the Committee plenty of times and for many years. He’s been Competition Secretary, President, CAMS Delegate (10 years), but never Secretary or Treasurer. He is still serving the club as an authorised officer for the CHVRS Scheme. He is a valuable member and we’re lucky to have him, hoon that he was,….. and is!?!? Written by Mary Hall.

OCTOBER, 2016, PRESIDENT’S PATTER
Hi, everyone. Hope you had a good time in September. I know I did. I won the trophy for THE BEST CORTINA at the ALL FORD DAY at Bonython Park. (Thanks to my son, Stuart, who detailed the car the day before.)Thanks to Graham Farrell for organising the day and the display. 23 cars were on our stand. This day is all about what it means to be in a club, particularly, our club – like-minded people, friendships, and having a good time. This was followed by a week’s holiday in Perth. This meant we missed the Bay to Birdwood Run. There was a display at the airport when we left. When we arrived home on 26th September, the display was still there. Our daughter and grand-daughter were going to stand on the side of the road and watch it. We haven’t had a report from them, yet. Barry.
Thank you Kevin Hatswell for providing this.

I might have to start out writing about writer’s block because that is what I am suffering from at the moment. I have a deadline and I have no idea where this thread is going to lead. There was an event at Mannum recently called “All Steamed Up”. It is a biennial event and will happen again in 2018. The event is based on the Mannum Museum and steam artefacts and Blacksmithing were the basis of the activities there. Mannum is the home town of the steam powered paddle wheeler “Marion” which was restored quite some time ago and then recently rebuilt I.C. engined paddle wheeler “Mayflower”. There were displays of old stationary engines and outboard motors. There was one steam traction engine and one steam waggon or wagon or truck or lorry dependent upon which part of the world that you come from. A lot of the stationary engines were operating some form of old mechanical equipment as well. Back in the good old days before SWER lines in the country side most farms has a 32 volt lighting system which consisted of a stationary engine driving a 32 volt generator which charged up a big battery pack to store the electricity. When the storage in the batteries was low the stationary engine and generator started up automatically and charged the batteries. There was one such gen set there running various items such as lights, a fan, a cake and dough mixer etc. In a lot of old workshops there would be a stationary engine driving by a belt shafting and pullies in the ceiling area and each piece of equipment would be driven from its own belt. The driving belt for the equipment there would be attached to the equipment full time either by a loose pulley and no drive or an attached pulley which would then drive the equipment. The pullies would be side by side and there would be some means of switching from one pulley to the other to turn the machine on and off. There were samples of that style of equipment there as well. There were 32 “artisan black smiths” working at the event. They are “artisans” because they make artistic items that they can sell to the public. They sounded OK when at work knocking steel into shape with a hand held hammer but the electrically driven mechanical hammer was a bit of a “turn off”!!! There were four ex Air Traffic Controllers at Mannum and one of them was the Captain on the Marion. The Captain was called “Peter the Boat” at work as he was involved with boats at the time. He did a lot of studies after he left the ATC field and his Captaincy includes ocean going cargo and oil transport ships. I have some models operated by steam and I took them to the event. I have a Wilesco gas fired radio controlled steam traction engine with a trailer and living van. The radio control gear is in the trailer and the traction engine can be steered and have the whistle blown by the two axis radio control equipment. I have a Stuart Beam engine and a Stuart Victoria Mill engine called “Eva”. I have a Wilesco Steam roller that has not been fired and sits around looking pretty as a “shed queen”. I have a Wilesco Ferris Wheel that can be driven by either of the Stuart engines. When I set the Stuart engines up to run on steam I had a choice of two boilers to use, one three and a half inches in diameter and the other four inches in diameter. As I wanted to run the engines for long periods of time at suitable display venues I went for the four inch boiler. I then found out that if I had bought the smaller boilers I would have bought kid’s toys but as I bought four inch boilers I had actually bought a boiler and I needed a boiler certificate for each boiler. I went off and joined the model steam railway on Regency Road to get access to a “boiler inspector”. What is a SWER line previously mentioned? The acronym stands for “single wire earth return” power lines that you see in the country. The power poles are normally quite some distance apart and the single wire is hard to see. Hot air balloonists are taught quite a lot about how to pick the wires and from the spatial arrangement of the insulators which direction the wires run. They can be quite a danger to hot air balloonists and I crewed on the ground for a hot air balloon that contacted a SWER line.

Ford Invitation Picnic Sunday 6th November 2016
The Early Ford V8 Club of
America invited us to their
Ford Invitation Picnic held at
the Lenswood Oval, on
Swamp road, Lenswood.
Members have attended this
function previously and
found it to be a great day
out. Proceeds from the day
were for the Cancer Care
Centre. Members met at
Bridgestone Select on Magill
Road and took a relaxing
drive to the Lenswood Oval
where we met up with other
FOCC members.
Everyone pitched in to set up the
marquee and get ready to enjoy good
food and company on what proved to
be a great day out. There were plenty of
motor vehicles of different makes and
models from different eras on display.
Unfortunately we were unable to park
on the oval due to the recent wet
weather but we found plenty of room on
the surrounds.
Many local and world issues were
discussed by our group some we may
have inadvertently solved with the
remainder staying unresolved. Some of
our members did well in the raffle and
once the draw and thankyous were
completed we left for home.
Many thanks again to the host for the
invitation.

Shannon’s Yankalilla
Cruise20th
November 2016 The Shannon’s Yankalilla Cruise
started at the Castle Plaza
shopping Centre on South
Road where each vehicle
pays a $15.00 entry fee.
Seventeen club members in 9
vehicles signed up for the
cruise to Yankalilla. The
organisers picked a glorious
day for the event and we left
Castle Plaza at 10:00am.
People cheered us on as we
passed through towns on the
way.
When we arrived at Yankalilla
we were guided to a parking
place on the oval. Members
pitched in to erect a marquee
a (2.4mX2.4m) provided by me
that will fit into a car boot.
Members were free to look
around at other displays and
vehicles.
The day was up to its usual
high standard and I
recommend a continued
attendance.

Semaphore Street Fair 27th November 2016
Alice and I saw the advert for this event in the local messenger newspaper and rang the
coordinator regarding providing a display for their man cave section. I decided with agreement for the event coordinator to place my two classic vehicles in this year’s event
in order to gauge the visitor interest for a possible FOCC display for 2017.
There were a massive number of people visiting the displays and stalls set up all along Semaphore’s main street. There was a lot of interest in the two cars we had on display
and we may have two new members for our club.
The organisers sound keen for us to expand our display for 2017 and I wait for their confirmation of our attendance. Please mark this event in your diaries for next year as it
was a fantastic day out.
Graham.

ON A LIGHTER NOTE / by MR. GULLIBLE.
Hi everyone, I’m back! Sorry about the few missing entries in the magazine recently but the brain has been focused elsewhere. All of us oldies and may be a few of the young ones may have heard of the saga called ‘days of our lives’. The thing about this program is you can miss it for a year, tune in and you don’t even realise you have missed anything.
So what you may ask! Looking back to where you would have last read, the Architect and Engineer were still working on the house design. So as of writing this article, the Architect and Engineer are still working on the house design. I think it will take twice as long to design as it will to build. There have been quite a few debates re materials used and how to go about construction. In the main it is about finishes not structural items. I have learnt that it is quicker to agree with what the Architect wants to do so the project can move on. However the architect may get really miffed at the end of the day when she finds out that I have used the finishes I wanted anyway. Reluctance to use new, modern and proven materials is beyond me but I suspect it is a comfort thing. Believe it or not but it may just get finished and through the rest of the process by Christmas. Yep, that is this Christmas. All up 18 months for one small house and not one finial to be seen. The Shed Outbuilding The shed sagas are a distant memory of problems as they are all done now. Well accept for the promised roller doors. They have actually turned up but for reasons only Mr Gullible knows, they will not be fitted for a year or so. I can’t actually tell you why they are not fitted because the council are a little touchy about people living in sheds. Whoops! In fact it is legal to live in a shed, caravan or other temporary accommodation on site as long as it meets curtain structural and environmental criteria. The shed has been lined and insulated, fully set up ablutions connected to septic and full kitchen. Heating is catered for by a wood fire and there seems to be an abundance of pre tested fire wood. If summer ever gets here, I will need to consider cooling but I may have that sorted shortly. Even have Foxtel set up so I can watch all those car programs. So the shed does comply unless I fit the roller doors. Also you need to have a council approved building permit for a house dwelling and Mr Gullible has every expectation that it will be delivered by Christmas and may be even this coming one as stated in the item above.
The Mother in law Some of you may remember that in the past I had written a periodical about the life and times of my Mother in Law. There was a request to cease this article but it was never explained why. I can only assume it was offending someone. You would think if they found it offensive they simply would not read it. Does this mean that the Mother in Law is back in print? No, not unless I get the go ahead from the Executive Committee to continue. In the meantime…… The Brother in Law Most of us have one of these somewhere lurking in the side lines and I am no exception. This one is a big bull of a guy 6’ 2” and intimidates most people. So how tough is he? Let me tell you the story of the man who took on a train and survived. Some years ago when the brother in law (BiL) for short [That works, I will call him Bill] was a young lad chasing girls and drinking far too much of the fermented grape, was traveling home late one night and as he attempted to drive straight across a train line he came to a sudden halt as his little Toyota Corolla found a train in the way. Just as well it was in an 80 km/h zone and not a 100 km/h zone.
After the train had come to a halt and the emergency services had arrived they concluded that he did not survive the impact as there was next to nothing left of the front of the car. The tow truck dragged the car wreckage away from the train line so the train could continue on its way and the emergency crew could cut the body out of the car. As the rescue crew started working on the car they could hear a faint sound. Yep, it was Bill swearing at them for not being careful with the car. Brocken ribs, smashed jaw, busted arm and big cuts on his legs internal organs damaged and in hospital for 2 months. Now he rides a motor bike??

The Agency then hired an Ornithological Behaviourist to determine if there was a cause for the disproportionate percentages of motorbike kills versus car kills. The Ornithological Behaviourist quickly concluded that when crows eat road kill, they always have a look-out crow to warn of danger. They discovered that while all the lookout crows could shout "Cah", not a single one could shout "bike" from Mary Hall
Ian Saunders 27 March · Bolton, United Kingdom · The Highways Agency found over 200 dead crows on the M4 near Bridgend recently, and there was concern that they may have died from Avian Flu. A Pathologist examined the remains of all the crows, and, to everyone's relief, confirmed the problem was NOT Avian Flu. The cause of death appeared to be from vehicular impacts. However, during analysis it was noted that varying colours of paints appeared on the ...bird's beaks and claws. By analysing these paint residues it was found that 98% of the crows had been killed by impact with
motorbikes, while only 2% were killed by cars.
