The tech industry is known for being a fast-paced, high-stakes
environment. Brands compete to create the hottest new products
and to meet consumer demand for next-generation smartphones,
wearables, cameras and televisions. There is no ‘standing still’.

uniquely competitive space, rising to become one of the best-known

and most valuable brands in the world. The South Korean based
multinational is also known for being a good place to work at.
Samsung Canada is consistently recognized as one of the top 100
employers in Canada, and the Greater Toronto Area.
“Samsung has the ability to attract talented people who want to make
a difference, and they support the employees with the right tools and
investments to be successful,” says Paul Flexman, Director of Retail
Excellence with Samsung Canada.
Flexman joined Samsung in 2015, just as a project to develop one of
the largest Samsung stores in the world was underway at Toronto’s
Eaton Centre. While unique at the time, showcasing all of Samsung’s
products and their interconnectivity under one roof, the store has
proved to be a success. The hands-on environment, offering a
number of services and events, is popular with customers. In 2018,
the store won the Excellence in Retailing Award from the Retail
Council of Canada for its In-Store Experience and Design.
Flexman points out that in retail, success often depends on a
willingness to test out new ideas. He has seen first-hand the value
of encouraging curiosity and an entrepreneurial culture that
permeates Samsung Canada. “There’s an open appetite to do things
differently, to invest in new concepts, and the ability to have your
creativity shine is strongly encouraged,” he says.
Samsung is also known for investing in employees and supporting
their professional development. Aaron Thompson joined Samsung
Canada as a co-op student back in 2012. He started in the
company’s finance department at its Mississauga headquarters.
Soon after, he moved to the marketing team and was offered a
number of increasingly senior roles. Today, Thompson is the
company’s manager of e-Commerce on Samsung’s Retail
Excellence team. His team oversees online promotions, pricing, and
new product launches.
“There is a lot of opportunity for growth internally at Samsung, and I
am a perfect example of that,” he says, noting that the e-Commerce
unit has gained a lot of momentum as online sales become
increasingly important. Thompson was one of just three marketing
employees who launched the e-Commerce division a couple of years
back. Since then, it has rapidly expanded.
“What I like best about working at Samsung is the challenge. Every
day is a new opportunity to try something different,” Thompson
reflects. He would advise others to join Samsung as well – especially
in his department, where he says there is plenty of room to grow.
“The e-Commerce team is on the leading edge of innovation within
our company. We get to bring new platforms to life.”

Together with a wide variety of in-house courses and workshops,
Samsung also provides up to $4,000 a year to finance external
training by accredited institutions. Last year, the company was also
recognized with the GoodLife Health & Wellness Award for
promoting employee health and wellness. The Mississauga campus,
just north of Highway 401, has an on-site gym and a cafeteria that
offers healthy, subsidized meals. There are also a number of social
clubs for staff and in-house volleyball and soccer teams.
What stands out for Dean Pitton is the opportunity to collaborate on
new projects with a group of highly-motivated colleagues. Pitton was
recruited, like Thompson, to build up the company’s e-Commerce
division. His role evolved quickly from overseeing the customer
experience to business development and vendor partnerships and
finally culminating in a manager of sales and operations position.
“We’ve got a strong drive towards market leadership,” Pitton says,
referring to Samsung’s work culture. “You can see that in terms of
the types of businesses we are in and how we have grown those
businesses. Thinking outside the box is core to Samsung’s culture.
One of the things we talk about here is what are we going to do that
we have never done before?” Indeed, “Do what you can’t” is a
common maxim at Samsung Canada, reflecting an attitude of growth
and continual improvement.
Another strength of Samsung, Pitton believes, is the opportunity for
mentorship – both formal and informal. He has reached out to
colleagues in different parts of the organization, to test out new
ideas. Their support has helped him navigate and better understand
various aspects of the company’s business.
“What brought me here and what keeps me at Samsung is working
with a lot of other people who are driven and talented,” he says.
“When I think of how Samsung is different, it has a culture that really
drives towards a common goal. Everyone here is just really on the
same page in terms of what it is going to take to do great things.”
