Motet: O sacrum convivium (Vytautus Miskini, b. 1954) O sacrum convivium, in quo Christus sumitur, recolitur memoria passionis eius. Mens impletur gratia, et futurae gloria, nobis pignus datur. Amen. O sacred banquet in which Christ is consumed and the memory of his passion renewed. The mind is filled with grace and future glory, and a pledge to us is given. Amen.

-St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) About this morning’s choral and organ music…Today is World Communion Sunday, an occasion when we celebrate our mem-bership in the international fellowship of believers. Our choral and organ music celebrates this unity in diversity. Samuel Barber (1910-1981) is one of the most famous 20th-century American composers. His solo art songs are especially memorable, but he also excelled in chamber, orchestral and choral music. “What wondrous love is this” is an early American shape note hymn—so named since, in the original notation, the notes each have a particular shape (square, circle, triangle, etc.) to help non-musicians read the scores and sing along. The attractive, rustic melody brings the stark mys-tery of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross into sharp relief; Barber’s setting heightens the sense of naïve wonder, with its spare lines and orchestral colours.

Ernani Aguiar is an Austrian-trained Brazilian composer. His Salmo 150 is a playful, exuberant setting of a joyous text, and makes a kind of pseudo-orchestra of the choral voices through the use of imitative vowel and consonant sounds.

American composer Ned Rorem is best-known for his art songs, though his music in other fi elds is lauded for its high quality. Early in his career Rorem spent ten years in France, before returning to New York. Sing, my soul, His wondrous love was composed for the National Cathedral’s Paul Callaway, the fi rst person to conduct any of Rorem’s choral music anywhere.

Vytautus Miskinis is a prominent Lithuanian choral conductor and prolifi c composer, with more than 700 works to his credit. Since 1985 he has been Choral Director of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, and since 1979 direc-tor of the acclaimed Ąžuoliukas Youth Choir. His largely chordal setting of the ancient O sacrum convivium exploits the typically rich and blended sound that characterises the Baltic choral tradition.

Leo Sowerby (1895–1968), American composer and church musician, won the Pulitzer Prize for music in 1946, and was often called the “Dean of American church music” in the early to mid 20th century. Composer of over 500 works, he was founding director of the College of Church Musicians at Washington Nation-al Cathedral. Comes Autumn Time (1916) began life in the present version for organ, but was orchestrated by Sowerby the following year to great acclaim. –JO
