From the Pastor Have you ever been in one of those awkward situations when you are speaking with some-one and you notice they have lettuce in their teeth, food on their face, or could stand to use a Kleenex because they've got, as my buddy's eight year old daughter would say, "a bat in the bat cave"? It's sometime difficult to point out the faux pas because we don't want to embarrass them. Other times, we just hope that someone else has the courage to do so. But really, out of charity, we should seek a private moment and let them know what they may not be able to see for themselves. As difficult as these situations are very few people like to speak to others about an irregular situation especially when the life they are living is morally compromised. But isn't this our duty as Christians? Never to point out another's flaws, but rather to help them grow in sanctity of life motivated by love? Our example of love comes from the Lord in today's gospel. Jesus finds himself at a well in a Samaritan town and a local woman comes by to draw water. He asks her for a drink. She is amazed at this since men did not talk to women outside the family in those days, nor did Jews have anything to do with Samaritans, let alone drink from their cups or use their utensils. Jesus, for his part, offers her living water (faith) that leads to eternal life. She however, is fixed on earthly realities and thinks he means water from a stream. The passage goes: The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water." Jesus said to her, "Go call your husband and come back." The woman answered and said to him, "I do not have a husband." Jesus answered her, "You are right in saying, 'I do not have a husband.' For you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true." The Lord is thirsty not just for water, but for her faith and her salvation. He desires her health, well being, and above all, her eternal life. The life she is living isn't going to get her to Heaven and so he doesn't ignore her state in life. Rather, he acknowledges it in love and invites her to move beyond the predicament she finds herself in. And so it should be with us. The Lord desires all mankind to be saved and if we love him we too will desire it and work for it. He already knows all the sins we have committed and the guilt we bear but he desires us nonetheless. What he won't do is pretend there is no sin where sin exists. However, he is eager to forgive and restore us to friendship with him. If we but ac-knowledge our sins and confess them then he will take them away. This is the message we bring to the world. Jesus wants your friendship and we can have it if we simply turn to him and away from sin. Our task is to help one another in conversion. So don't be afraid to approach another who may be outside the Church, but do it in love, having confessed and prayed first. When someone approaches you in charity accept their criticism and take it to prayer. We never know how God will choose to speak with us. He knows us inside and out. We have no right to self righteous indignation at the sins of others. Instead, we help each other and pick each other up after a fall, no matter how bad that fall is. The mark of a real disciple is to help another achieve faith's goal, our salvation. Might I suggest that during this Lenten season you invite someone away from the Faith to come home to the Church at least once in these forty days?
