Our 64th anniversary banquet held on June 24 was a tremendous success, thanks. to the hard . working committee members. The committee is already hard at work on the 65th anniversary banqqet, which will be held on June 24, 2007 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. It's going to be a BIG ONE.

Donald Jones, who donated our. memorial rock placed at Punchbowl, has been named an Honorary Member of our club. Graham Salisbury failed to receive the required number of votes.

On July 3, Denis Teraoka, our past president, will be the Grand Marshal of Iolani School's Independence Day Parade. Our line dancers will perform at the event.

The National Japanese American Memorial Book and DVD are now available for viewing in the office.

The month of May was a very busy month. On May 26, the Ala Wai School invited members of our club to their May Day program. Those who enjoyed the music and dances were Stanley and Yuki Akita, Raymond and AId Nosaka, Robert and Nancy Arakaki, Kazuto Shimizu, Amanda Stevens, Amanda's father Ned and stepmother Dorothea.

May 27 was our annual cleanup day and, thanks to all who showed up, the Clubhouse looks spic and span. We are indebted to the sons and daughters, men from the 100th/442nd reserve unit under the leadership of Harold Estabrooks, and Patty Kawaoka's Miramar Hotel group for their tremendous help. We also extend our thanks to Russell Helton (Susumu Ota's son-in-law) and his assistant for providing the scaffold used in cleaning high areas, fIxtures and fans.

The Memorial Day weekend was full of activities. On May 28, several club members attended the special services held at the Wesley United Methodist Church to honor the World War II veterans. On the same day, Tommy Nishioka, of Able Chapter, represented the club at a service at Honpa Hongwanji Betsuin; and Masaharu Saito, of Rural Chapter, attended the Waialua Lions Memorial Day service.

On May 29, Stanley Akita and Robert Arakaki attended the Mayor's Memorial Day Service at PJIDchhow1.A--1leautitiJl wr.eath was=Jl:resented;and the elub eol6l'S were displayed, thanks to Sltigeru Tsubota. Later that day, Shigeru Tsubota and his wife· Mieko attended the Governor's Memorial Service at the Kaneohe Veterans Cemetery. A beautiful orchid lei was presented by Mieko and, again, our club colors were displayed through the efforts of Shigeru.

On June 14, the U.S. Air Force paid a touching tribute to the 100th Battalion and 442nd RCT when they christened a brand new C-17 cargo plane, Spirit of "Go for Broke." About 50 veterans attended the ceremony and received VIP treatment from at least a hundred airmen on hand, which was so heartwarming.

PPP VOLUNTEERS by Joy Teraoka, Editor

We had thirty-eight volunteers at last month's collation: Stanley and Yuki Akita, Bernard Akamine, Akira Akimoto, Otomatsu Aoki, Alfred Arakaki, Robert and Nancy Arakaki, Eunice Dela Cruz, Kunio Fujimoto, Mary Hamasaki, Richard Hosaka, Ed !kuma, Arthur Komiyama, Susumu Kunishige, Don and Kimi Matsuda, Philip Matsuyama, Masanori Morikawa, Saburo Nishime, Tom Nishioka, Seiei Oshiro, Susumu Ota, Mamoru Sato, Robert Sato, Kazuto Shimizu, Hiromi Suehiro, Goro Sumida, Dot Tamashiro, Denis and Joy Teraoka, Martin Tohara, Rikio and Evelyn Tsuda, Shigeru Tsubota, Takako Umamoto, Ukichi Wozumi, and Marie Yoneshige. However, if I missed anyone, please forgive me.

It is always gratifying to see so many working together to help get our newsletter out. There is only one small problem. Sometimes as the collators circle the tables picking up page after page automatically, they become distracted and talk story with the next person. That's when it happens -two of the same pages are picked up or a page is missed. We have had people tell us they received two and even three copies of the same page or their newsletter is-missing a page. Our apologies to PPP readers who have experienced this. We will try to be more careful in the future.

AIR FORCE DEDICATION OF C-17 HONORS l00TB/442lVD

by Joy Teraoka

On June 14, 2006, both Boeing and the US Air Force paid tribute to the veterans of the 100th/442nd RCT by naming their newest C-17 cargo plane after the regiment's famous motto, "Go for Broke." This honor was in recognition of the exceptional bravery, loyalty and honor these World War II Japanese-American soldiers displayed on the battlefields of Italy and France despite the discrimination and injustice they faced at home in America.

According to Ron Yamada who accompanied the group, the day began early for 25 mainland veterans and friends when they were shuttled in style by bus to Boeing's assembly plant executive conference room in Long Beach, California. Here the veterans shared breakfast with not only the generals, but also Boeing's "higher ups" and 100th/442nd personnel. After a Q&A session, riding golf carts, the vets toured the plant to see the awesome sight of these planes under construction.

Prior to its departure at 10 a.m., Boeing executives explained that as a very special treat or tribute, the plane would do a "low altitude flyby" passing the audience with its wings tipped. One of the design engineers told Yamada he had never seen any of their planes do that. The vets were totally impressed.

Cliff Tanigawa who was instrumental in having the name Spirit of "Go for Broke," chosen for this plane served as personal escort to the vets. Many thanks to Tanigawa for his efforts.

In Honolulu, more than fifty veterans of the 100th/442nd RCT, plus many wives, widows, family members and friends gathered at the 100th Infantry Battalion Clubhouse at 11 a.m., to await the three sleek Air Force buses that transported them to Hickam Air Force Base. Upon entering the base, a military police car escorted this entourage to the reception area. As we alighted the buses, a smartly uniformed air force person cordially escorted each one us to a seat under the canopy and offered us a drink of punch or bottled water. The bus carrying only the veterans then took them to where the new C-17 cargo plane from Long Beach had landed.

Just before 1 p.m. each of us under the reception tent were again individually escorted by these cordial and courteous air force men and women to the area where the ceremony would take place. The VIP treatment accorded us was lovely, and our escorts gave us a wonderful impression of these service men and women.

As the plane taxied into view and each veteran marched off the plane escorted by a young air force person, he received a standing ovation and cheers from the greeting crowd. It was a moment when one felt "all choked up" and "teary eyed." (If only all our children could have been there to witness this touching moment.)

After the veterans were seated, the program began. A history of the 100th/442nd RCT was delivered by 1 st Sergeant Kenneth Golden. The official musical honors and invocation were followed by remarks from Brigadier General Peter Pawling, Commander, 154th Wing, Hawaii Air National Guard. General Pawling also conducted the unveiling of the plane's name, Spirit of "Go for Broke," while Ms. Mildred Courtney, Director of Military Sales, Outrigger Hotels, broke the christening bottle.

Colonel William Changose, Commander, 15th Airlift Wing, and Lieutenant Colonel Colbert K.H. Low, Commander, tOOth Battalion, also spoke. Col. Changose said, "The Spirit of 'Go for Broke' was the only C-17 in the Air Force to be named after a motto. Most of the jets are named after people and places." Changose hopes the name will encourage people to learn more about the "history of this fantastic unit, and hopefully inspire them to do great things, also."

A lovely reception of food followed the ceremony.

According to Associated Press reporter, Audrey McAvoy, "many of the vets, who boarded the jet for a brief ride across the runway, said they never imagined they would ever be so recognized." (Honolulu Star Bulletin, 6115/06, pg. A-5)

Ed lkuma (HQ) stated with emotion, ''Never had anything like this before. This is a terrific day for me. Now I can go, I can go to my destination." he said, pointing to the sky. Certainly, most of the vets shared this feeling.

On Saturday, June 24, 2006, several hundred attendees gathered at the Ala Moana Hotel to celebrate the tOOth Infantry Battalion's 64th Anniversary. This year's event focused mainly on the veterans and their friends getting together to "talk story" with one another.

Dear Mrs. Joy Teraoka

Reference: Puka Puka Parade, June 2006 issue, page 4, line 4, which states that the l00tb Inf. Bn. is "the 1st Battalion of the 442nd RCT."

The 100tb Infantry Battalion was never redesignated as the "1st Battalion of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team.n

The attached enclosures (Tsubota attached three offiCial Army letters/documents) provide a historical development of the issue pertaining to the correct designation of the Battalion.

a. Enclosure 1: 12 June 1944, letter by Chaplain Masao Yamada, 3rd Battalion, 442Dd RCT, to Lt. Col. Harrison Herhardt, Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense, Washington, DC, which stated in effect that several men and officers of the 100tb strongly desired to retain their present identity, i.e., lOOtb Infantry Battalion.

b. Enclosure 2: 27 June 1944, Summary Sheet issued by the War Department pointed out the suspension of the action to redesignate the 100tb Infantry Battalion as the 1 st Battalion, 442nd Infantry Regiment.

c. Enclosure 3: 2 July 1944, War Department message to the Commanding General, USAF North African Theater of Operations, stated the lOOtb Infantry Battalion will retain its present designation and assigned or attached to the 442nd Infantry Regiment.

Request appropriate action be taken concerning this matter in the July issue of the Puka Puka Parade. Aloha and Mahalo!

Sincerely, Shigeru "Stu" Tsubota, Chapter 0, 100tb Inf' Bn. Vets Club

PPP Editor's Response

Dear Stu:

Thank you for your correction regarding my stating the 100th Infantry Battalion became the "1 st Battalion of the 442nd." You are correct, technically speaking, in asserting the 100th retained its unique name and identity even though it officially became a part of the 442nd RCT.

To clear any misunderstanding of this issue, according to official Army history, "On 10 August 1944, the lOOth Battalion formally became part of the 442nd RCT, for the final 9 months of the War in Europe. The 442nd RCT was demobilized and inactivated in August 1946, leaving their honors, lineage and traditions to the 100th Battalion from which many had been inherited two years before. This lineage and these honors continue to be preserved by the 100th Battalion, 442nd Infantry (US Army Reserve)." (Source: 6/23/06, ht1p:llen.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S. tOOth Infantry Battalion)

Another entry from Army military history is as follows: "On 10 August 1944, the separate battalion was reorganized and redesignated as the 100th Battalion, 442nd RCT, replacing the 1st Battalion, which had remained behind in the United States when the regiment sailed overseas. Thereafter, the 100th served as an organic element of the 442nd RCT until the end of the war." (Source: 4/3/01, htt»:lIwww.army.milIcmh-pg/topics/apamlIOOBn.html)

To all you proud vets, "Long live the 100tb Infantry Battalion."

Aloha, Joy

On May 6, 2006, several of the veterans of the 100th Inf. Bn. Participated in the "Salute to Our Troops" parade, organized by the USO Hawaii. Over 4,500 troops representing every branch of the military participated in the parade down Kalakaua Avenue. The thousands who lined the parade route greeted the marchers with supportive shouts of "Go Arm~" "Go Navy," "Thank You" and "Mahalo:'

The 100th Inf. Bn. veterans rode in style with other World War II veterans in a bright green rainbow trolley. Donned in their best "Club Shirts;' they energetically waved American flags to those in attendance (and managed to take a photo or two along the way).

Ronald Oba, President of the 442nd Veterans Club, was among those inside the World War II trolley. "It's an honor to be welcoming back and greeting our soldiers who just came back from battle in Iraq," said Oba, "They were in harm's way like we were in Europe."

The hour long parade ended at Kapiolani Park where military personnel and their families were treated to an afternoon of great entertainment and a wonderful picnic. It was truly a day for all to "salute our troops~'

I called Martin Tohara to ask how his wife, Dorothy, who is in Hale Nani Rehab Center, is doing. He says that she is walking but until she gets stronger and better, she will stay there. Please take care, Dorothy, and hope to see you soon.

Thanks to all the Doggies who helped clean the refrigerators in the Clubhouse lounge and board room and the window screens in Turner Hall during our annual clean-up day.

CHARLIE CHAPTER NEWS by Wayne M. Nagao

The meeting was held on Saturday, June 3, at 10:30 a.m. Attendees present were President Kazuto Shimizu, Treasurer Warren Iwai, Secretary Skip Tomiyama, Larry Kamiya, Hiromi Suehiro, Clayton Kamiya and Wayne Nagao.

Secretary Skip Tomiyama read the minutes from last month's meeting. The fIrst item discussed was the Charlie Chapter Bylaws Revisions - which were unanimously voted "yea" by our members at the meeting last month. Therefore the bylaws revisions are now in effect. All members of Charlie Chapter please refer to the copies of bylaws revisions that we had provided. The contents and expl_ons should enable you to understand what the bylaws revisions are. In case you haven't received it yet, please contact President Shimizu or Secretary Tomiyama for copies of Charlie Chapter's revised bylaws through CLUB 100 (our mother club) and attention it to our Chapter President Shimizu and/or Secretary Skip Tomiyama. The most significant changes were: (1) Chapter Board members can now hold only one position per person (4 people total) and (2) a new annual membership fee of $5 is now in place. The Chapter annual membership fee will help our operation and all that money will to be deposited into our Chapter Treasury.

Treasurer Warren Iwai reported we earned a few cents in interest in the Chapter Treasury fund since last month and there were no other significant changes.

President Kazuto Shimizu announced Chapter meetings for the rest of the year 2006 will be held on Saturdays - July 29, August 12, September 23, and October 28. The date for November has not been set yet. In December, as Christmas is on Saturday, there will be no meeting. No announcements were made yet about year 2007's Saturday morning meeting schedules.

As the member representing Charlie Chapter on the Apartment and House Committees, this reporter is happy to announce we made giant strides forward toward improving the apartments and the Clubhouse. Among the items discussed were the current apartment conditions that need immediate attention. We also discussed the future wishes of the veterans. This meeting, held on Kamehameha Day, was called by Chairman Stanley Akita (Charlie Chapter). Because of Akita, Robert Arakaki (Committee Vice-Chairman and President of the 100th Inf. Bn. Vets.) and Amanda Stevens (Office Manager and Grants Writing Specialist) it has been possible to receive preliminary grant commitments from both the State of Hawaii and also the Federal Government. Thank you very much, Amanda, for a job well done.

The current CHARLIE CHAPTER descendants roster that we have on record are: Lori Ah San (GD), Joyce Akamine (0), Paula Akamine (0), Irene Anzai (0), Cynthia (Anzai) Fukuda (0), Patricia Himeda (D), Marcia Horiuchi (0), Norine (Hada) Hung (D), Cheryl Hoffinan (D), Nolan Higa (S), Patricia Himeda (0), Jason Kamiya (S), Fern (Obara) Madrona (0), Carly Miyashiro (S), Earl Miyashiro (S), Richard Nagao (S), Wayne Nagao (S), Leonard Nagata (S), Arlene Sato (0), Stanley Sato (S), Karen Yamasaki (0), Andrew Yukitomo (GS) & April Yukitomo (0).

We would love to see more descendants join our Chapter, so please join us. We moved our meetings to the fourth Saturday of the month, since we thought the Chapter descendants would have a better chance of attending. Please check the PPP calendar for meeting dates. I cannot stress how important it is for l00th Infantry Veterans' club descendants to get more involved with the Chapter. Please - we need you badly!

It was very nice to see Larry Kamiya. Clayton Kamiya, his son, was father to our Chapter meeting. Larry's other son, and ':,,' ,.' ' Clayton's older brother, Major General Jason Kamiya is currently commanding our Armed Forces in Afghanistan -fighting terrorists for our country and our allies. Be safe and keep up the good work General Kamiya, and we'll see ' ' you when you get back.

On a different note, Warren Iwai's grandson Danny Carvalho who entertained us at last year's Christmas Luncheon Party, released a new CD titled, "SLACK KEY JOURNEY - On My Way" . At the tender age of 15, Danny has managed to write music and cut his own CD. It's currently on the market, so please support Danny by getting to know his talents in music. Kudos to Danny

Carvalho for fmding a great summer job. Let's all support Danny so one day soon, he will have a successful career as a recording artist. Needless to say he's a very talented teenager and he's also a very good young man. Good luck to Danny Carvalho in his quest for something great in the future. We're all proud of you! (EDITOR'S NOTE: For more information on Danny Carvalho and his music, visit his website at www.dannycarvalho.com. You can listen to selections from his CD or purchase the CD at CDbaby.comlcd/dannycarvalo).

Hope to see you all at Ala Moana Hotel on June 24 for our 64th Annual 100th Infantry Battalion Veterans' Anniversary Celebration luncheon. Please be well and have a great summer!

HEADQUARTERS CHAP1'ER NEWS by Ecllkuma and Jan Sakoda

Attending our June 10 Headquarters meeting were Ed lkuma, Seisaburo Taba., Art Komiyama, Dot Tamashiro, Bea Shinoda., Doris Aimoto, Pat and AId 'Akimoto, Mac Moriwake, and Ken Akimoto. Mr. Taba again obtained the 000 dim sum selections and donated the cold drinks. Thanks, buddy! Keeping minutes of the meeting in the absence of our Secretary Jan Sakoda was the ever dependable Bea Shinoda. With a moment of silence by President Ed Ikuma., the meeting started promptly at 10:30 a.m. (1/2 hour of"kau kau" fIrst).

Our Club clean-up this year with sleeves rolled up saw the following representing Headquarters: Ed Ikuma, Dot Tamashiro, Aki Akimoto, Elsie Oshita, Jen and Kim Naguwa (Ed Ikuma's granddaughters). If I missed anyone, gomen nasai and let me know. We will need more people from Headquarters Chapter on Club Clean-up Day in 2007.

The 64th Anniversary Banquet will be over as we go to press but through the dedicated work of our banquet representative, Seisaburo Taba., assisted by Dot Tamashiro, Headquarters Chapter was very well represented. Next year's banquet wiII be the Big One, our 65th. It is projected to be a three day affair so keep healthy and be a participant. It may well be, for some of us, our "last hurrah."

A most inspiring and revealing address about some of the inner happenings and accomplishments of all the AJA men in the military during World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam

_ __ W~~ covered-in detail by Major Gen~ Arthur Ishimoto (USAF Retired). This was at a Memorial Day service at the Kahala Wesley United Methodist Church. Nwnerous 10cJ AJAveteranS, as well as active military representatives, were in attendance. This was the church's tribute to the military during their Memorial Day services held on May 28, 2006. Major General Ishimoto is Pat Akimoto's brother-in-law, and we have seen the General in attendance during several of our Headquarters Chapter gatherings.

Congratulations to our 2006 graduates - our up-and-coming future leaders! Here are three grandchildren of Headquarters and Medic Chapters who graduated within the past two months.

Sonoe Nakasone, granddaughter of the late Dr. Henry Nakasone of Medics and Bessie Nakasone~ graduated Magna Cwn Laude (for us lay folk, it means ''with great honor") with a double major in Political Science and English from Howard University in Washington, D.C. Congratulations to Sonoe and her proud family!!!

AId and Pat Akimoto have a double share of congratulations with two of their grandchildren graduating. Ross Akimoto, son of Brian and Ada Akimoto, graduated from Pacific University with a degree in Exercise Science. Ross is home for the summer, working at Compadres Restaurant and having fun with his friends before heading back to Oregon in August to work. Pat said they visited an iris farm where the flowers were in full bloom. What a spectacular sight that must have been! They

Kaul Robello In 2004 (Pfloto by Dennis Oda. Honolulu star Butletin)

also enjoyed their trip to Mt. St. Helens.

Kaui Robello, daughter of Rodney and Alicia (Akimoto) Robello, graduated from Punahou and wiII be attending Siena College in Albany, New York. Kaui was awarded a full athletic scholarship to play volleyball. WOW! Very impressive as Siena College competes at the NCAA Division I level. You may recognize Kaui's name as she has been mentioned in both the Star Bulletin and Honolulu Advertiser for her athletic ability.

Our next meeting will be held on Saturday, July 15 at 10:00 a.m. at the Clubhouse. Important issues will be discussed so make every effort to be there.

It was a thrill and honor to actually board the C-17 which departed from Long Beach, California a feW hours earlier to land at

Hickam Air Field for the dedication of the Spirit of "Go For Broke." The veterans of the 1 OOth and 44200 were bussed out to the landing area where they boarded the plane and then taxied to

the dedication area. It was "chicken skin" to see the veterans proudly come off that plane -- even with their walkers and canes.

STAN'S CORNER by Stanley Akita

A man and his wife were celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary. On their special day a good fairy came to them and said that because they had been such a devoted couple she would grant each of them a very special wish. The wife wished for a trip around the world with her husband. W ooosh! Immediately she had airline/cruise tickets in her hand. The man wished for a female companion 30 years younger. Woooosh! Immediately he turned 90 --- gotta love that fairy.

STROKE IDENTIFICATION

During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall. They offered to call paramedics. She assured everyone that she was fme and just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the afternoon. Ingrid's husband called later saying that his wife had been taken to the hospital and passed away. She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Some stroke victims don't die, they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within three hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke ... totally. He said the trick was having a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within three hours, which is tough.

RECOGNING A STROKE

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. A bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

1. Ask the individual to SMILE 2. Ask the person to TALK, to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (coherently)

(Le., "It is sunny out today.") 3. Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this:

1. Ask the person to 'stick' out his or her tongue 2. If the tongue is 'crooked; .. if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an

indication of a stroke.

If he or she has trouble with anyone of these tasks, call 911 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

SURPRISING FACTS ABOUT THE FOURTH OF JULY (from MSN Encarta)

Independence Day commemorates the formal adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. However, it was not declared a legal holiday until 1941.

Uncle Sam was first popularized during the War of 1812, when the term appeared on supply containers. Believe it or not, the U.S. Congress didn't adopt him as ~ national symbol until 1961.

We're sorry to report that contrary to legend, historical research has failed to confirm that Betsy Ross sewed the first flag.

The ftrst two versions of the Liberty Bell were defective and had to be melted down and recast. The third version rang every Fourth of July from 1778 to 1835, when, according to tradition, it cracked as it was being tolled for the death of Chief Justice John Marshall.

The American national anthem, the "Star Spangled Banner;' is set to the tune of an English drinking song ("To Anacreon in Heaven").

The iron framework of the Statue of Liberty was devised by French engineer AlexandreGustave Eiffel, who also built the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

THE FINAL INSPECTION (Author Unknown)

The soldier stood and faced God, which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining, just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, you soldier, how shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek? To My Church have you been

true?"

The soldier squared his shoulders and said,lINo, Lord, 1 guess I ain't. Because those of us who carry guns, can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays, and talk And sometimes I've been violent, beca=-u=s-"-e~~~"';-;"7'ls=a;....;wf~u7.II~y-c::.'~~,,:...;.,..-..;----~ ...

"But, 1 never took a penny, that wasn't mine to keep ... Though I worked a lot of overtime, when the bills got just

too steep. And I never passed a cry for help, though at times 1 shook

with fear. And sometimes, God, forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears."

"1 know 1 don't deserve a place, among the people here. They never wanted me around, except to calm their fears. If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand.

I never expected or had too much, but if you don't, I'll understand."

There was a silence all around the throne, where the saints had often trod.

As the soldier waited quietly, for the judgment of his God. "Step forward now, you soldier, you've borne your burdens well.

Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets, you've done your time In Hell."

If you'd like to have a nice time, outdoors with your family this weekend, (hopefully, you'll receive this newsletter Saturday ~orning), plan on going to Family Day (see information on flyer below.) The 100th Infantry Battalion Veterans will have an information booth at Kapiolani Park. You'll see Mr.1kuma, Mr. Akita, Mr. Tsubota and Mr. Arakaki there. Please stop by to see us. This will be our second year participating in this event.

I want to give a heartfelt thanks to all of you who have lent your words of encouragement and prayers to my father, Ned Stevens, Jr. He was transported on the air-ambulance at the end of April from Hilo and brought to Queens. He was here with me for a month and is now back in Hilo recovering. He wanted me to thank you all for your kindness while he was here on Oahu. Jeremy and I were fortunate to be able to visit him over the Father's Day weekend. While I was in Hilo, I went to my favorite eating spot, Cafe 100. I felt close to the veterans as I read the plaque about the founder. I grew up in Hilo, loving the food at Cafe 100. Most OfyOll know its history, but here it is anyway: Cafe 100 started in 1945 as a little diner on the comer of Kamehameha Avenue and Manono Street in Waiakea Town, Hilo. Richard and Evelyn Miyashiro named their ~staurant in honor of the famed 100th Infantry Army Battalion which Mr. Miyashiro served in during World War n.
