Main Street Midland, MI 48640 [email protected] Position Summary The Dow Gardens Horticulturist will bring a high level of horticultural knowledge, professional gardening talent, and design aesthetic to create a quality experience for more than 200,000 guests who visit each year. This position will be responsible for herbaceous perennial beds at Whiting Forest of Dow Gardens which include parking area rain gardens, meadow areas, landscape beds around facilities, and other duties as assigned. Responsibilities • Manage an outdoor landscaped area including all aspects of its horticultural care from design through implementation and day-to-day maintenance in a public garden environment • Implement best practices to achieve exceptional horticultural standards in the area under their care • Positively motivate and lead volunteer and seasonal workers • Perform all levels of landscape and grounds maintenance tasks as required • Safely and effectively use a variety of tools including mechanized equipment • Assist in education programming and non-horticultural activities as needed • Other duties as assigned Qualifications • Knowledge of perennial and wildflower identification • Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, plant science, soil science, arboriculture, turf, or related field • Experience working in a public garden setting • Ability to work independently and with a team • The ability to perform manual labor under varying weather conditions, in an outdoor environment • Ability to lift up to 35lbs • Positive, enthusiastic, and energetic characteristics • Ability to contextualize work product within a larger vision • Broad hands-on knowledge of standard horticultural practices including but not limited to planting, fertilization, irrigation, propagation, pruning, and integrated pest management • Valid driver’s license and hold (or have an ability or obtain) a pesticide applicator’s certification • A willingness and desire to learn more about horticulture Dow Gardens is a signature gift of The Herbert H. and Grace A.
