What would you have thought if I told you on Thursday night that I asked my Magic 8-ball a series of questions and got the following answers? How many points will the Oriole’s score? 42. Will Kee turn the ball over? Yes. Will Nissen run another one back? Yes. Will Hulett and Nissen continue their double-digit tackle statistic? Yes. Are the cheerleaders going to be there? Yes. Well thenwith these kind of answers, my Magic 8-ball would have me feeling pretty positive about the outcome, but fate is tricky. Springville fell to the Hawks last Friday, 62-42 and finished up the 2011 season with a 2-7 record. Senior Zach Scriver threw for 222 yards and 4 touch downs and he played nice, sharing the ball with four different receivers. Senior Caleb Anderson had 6 catches for 108 yards and 3 TD’s, Junior Jake Hulett had 3 catches for 30 yards and 1 TD, and Drake Coonrod, a Junior, had 2 catches for 35 yards. Sophomore Elias Nissen caught 2 passes for 49 yards, rushed for another 30 on 12 carries, and we can’t forget to tack on his 70 yard kick return for a touch down, giving him 149 yards on the night. But it was Anderson who led the O’s in yardage, as he gained a total of 162 between receptions, rushing and kick returns. Brandon Mysak returned to Oriole action and scored on a 6 yard scamper, and Nathaniel Randolph, the quiet guy in the middle ran one in for a 2 point conversion. “To travel almost 3 hours away I was a little worried about how we would start. Also with our season over after the game I was interested to see who would show up. To come out and be ahead 14-8 was a credit to how hard our kids have worked this season”, said Coach Martin. And so, while the score, the record and the finish may seem disappointing, we have much to be proud of. We still have a Scriver who can play QB. We could still have a Mysak to cheer for. All we have to do is encourage little sister Leanna to go out for football and wear her brothers jersey. Nathaniel could grow his hair back out, change his name to Rudolph and re-enroll all over again (This has yet to be cleared with Springville Administration). Caleb Anderson has the remainder of his senior year to teach his cat-like reflexes to next year’s up and comer’s before he ventures off to the beach. And at the risk of jumping ahead and dreaming of next year, what could be better than having a Hulett on your team? Well 2 of course, and that is exactly what we’ll have when Trevor lines up next to big brother Jake. Drake “the best name in football” Coonrod will return, maybe a little bigger, maybe a little faster and definitely ready to lead his team mates. We can “hope” that Selby Ballantyne and Elias Nissen haven’t hit their growth spurts yet, but it will be some kind of fun to see them return and lead the conference in everything. Brian “Pele” Allsup is destined to break his own personal best (37 yarder) when it comes to field goals. Tyler Stewart and Drew Hoskins were our defensive stoppers this year and in doing so, they’ve merely raised the bar for next year. Mix all these guys with our JV boys coming up and I foresee all kinds of exciting headlines. We might want to start selling season tickets mid-March to be sure we have enough seating. Enjoy the off season folks; get the pacemaker charged up, the seat cushions ordered and Friday afternoons and evenings clear. It’s going to be one great ride. (all photos provided by Rich Lorimer)

MARTIN AND THE ORIOLES END SEASON ON THE ROAD

Coach Martin took the O’s on a bit of a road trip last Friday, one in which they crossed the Wisconsin border a time or two in order to take on a 6-2 Lansing, Kee team, on the last night of regular season play. What would you have thought if I told you on Thursday night that I asked my Magic 8-ball a series of questions and got the following answers? How many points will the Oriole’s score? 42. JV WRAPS UP THEIR SEASON AT 7-2

Well I forgot to ask my Magic 8-ball about the JV football team and their potential for a win at Kee. No need to speculate though, as the guys took it to the Hawks and won 20-6. Kudos to the coaches, Dean Smyth, Jared Baumann and Brandon Smiley for always having the guys prepared and poised. The Oriole’s were firing on all cylinders as they played a stingy defense and used a solid ground game to maintain control throughout the entire four quarters. Remember Oriole Fans, approximately 274 days until football camp, 2012. (photos courtesy of Rich Lorimer)

LADY O’S SEASON COMES TO AN END Well it was only a year ago that Bellevue Marquette shattered the Lady O’s postseason with a stunning come from behind win at Midland High School in second round, regional volleyball play. This year, they didn’t have to come from behind, as they pretty well ran the table, defeating Springville in 3 straight sets, all ending with the same score, 25-20. The Orioles had their opportunities but couldn’t quite make it over the proverbial hump. With the loss, the girls end their season with an overall record of 17-18. C.J. Fitzgerald led the team in kills with 11 while Megan Hall had 6. Fitzgerald and Sidney Hopkins shared the lead in assists, each dishing out 10. The O’s say goodbye to another amazing senior class… C.J. Fitzgerald, Megan Hall, Holly Mikita, Emily Mysak and Brittney Oxley. Statistics aside, we saw some great

leadership this season, and while another year is in the books, perhaps not with the ending we hoped for, there is still plenty to be proud of. Oh—and let’s not forget, Club season is not too far off.

CRAZY MASCOT OF THE WEEK There’s some pretty crazy mascots out there, here’s your weekly dose of a U.S. high school with an out of the ordinary nick name. Fisher, Illinois is home to “The Fisher Bunnies”, a school with 122 students in grades 9-12. They earned the name Bunnies in 1933 when their boys basketball team played in an area tournament. 2 players wore rabbits feet on the belts of their shorts. The name stuck and they remain the Fighting Bunnies. Their colors are orange & black, they feature all traditional sports as well as soccer and bass fishing. Yes, I said bass fishing. Oh, and by the way? It is listed as a Co-Ed sport.

WEEKLY PICKS CONTEST: Check out these high school play off games and make your picks: Preston at Clarksville NE Hamilton at Janesville W. Delaware at Webster City Iowa City, City at Cedar Falls Here’s what you do, choose your winners, & the point total of the Springville game. Tie-breaker goes to the one closest to the point total. Send your picks & name to [email protected] & catch next weeks issue to see who won bragging rights. Congratulations to Manchester’s Leah Riley for winning last weeks contest.

HOOGLAND QUALIFIES FOR STATE In a race that featured 3 of the top 10 1A runners, the Springville/Central City cross country team had two athletes qualify to move on in state competition. Arden Betzer of Central City won the race with a time of 15:54. Springville Junior Angie Hoogland saved her best for last at the Wapello qualifier meet last Thursday. With a time of 16:54 she earned a trip to the state meet this Saturday in Ford Dodge. 16 minutes and 54 seconds, let’s see. There might be a few things I could do that long, but running is definitely not one of them. We all wish Angie the best as she heads West to represent the Orioles. (photo provided by Sandy Hoogland)

FACE IN THE CROWD This week’s Face In The Crowd is Springville Alum and future Legend, Nichole Wittenburg. She was spotted at the Springville/Marquette volleyball match in Wyoming on Tuesday. Finish this sentence; The best thing about being an Oriole is… “pride” My favorite sport to play is—volleyball My favorite sport to watch is volleyball and basketball My favorite day of the week is FRIDAY If Springville were to add a sport, what should it be? Tennis What is your “comfort food”? Cookies-n-Cream Ice Cream

Well done Nichole—you just never know, at the next Springville event, YOU could be more than a Face In The Crowd!

CRAZY THINGS I SEE… When is it that we learn to tie our shoes? Pre-School? Kindergarten? Maybe double-knotting comes later but Springville Freshman Sarah Matus must have been absent that day. The Oriole Libero lost her shoe in Tuesday night’s match against Marquette. It didn’t interrupt the game, she simply smiled and put it back on when the play was over. Can’t wait to see what happens in basketball games.

DID YOU KNOW? ~Iowa High School’s cross country distances are 5000 meters (3.1 miles) ~The first state meet was in 1922 and was won by Cedar Rapids ~Over 900 men’s and 1000 women’s cross country teams compete in the NCAA across 3 divisions

DID YOU KNOW? On September 30, senior Megan Hall traded in her pony tail for a cause. In celebration of Cancer Awareness, she donated 10 inches of her mane for the Locks of Love organization. It was the third time Megan has made such a donation. She first donated 10 inches in 2006, another 12 in 2008. That makes 32 inches in five years. Outstanding, and just one more example of our unique student body. Thank you for sharing this Megan.
