DID YOU KNOW??? The boys basketball team cleans? Now before you get your to do list going, please read further. Carver Hawkeye Arena is where the action takes place. There are a total of 4 home basketball games that the guys go down and watch. After the game is over, they team up to clean the place from top to bottom. Now yes, these boys are good Samaritans and would probably do it for the free admission to the game—but it is a fundraiser with the proceeds going back to the program in order to help pay for their trip to the state tournament and summer team camps. Coach Merritt had this to say, "Doing the clean-ups has definitely been a good experience. We are able to make some pretty good money without having to sell things, like we typically do. This should allow us to get to a couple of really good team camps this summer. Additionally, we've gotten a chance to work as a team, off of the court, and also worked at being organized and efficient. Also, it's been a real eye-opener for all of us at how important it is to clean-up after ourselves because there is always someone out there that has to clean up the mess. I personally want to thank all of the guys and the parents that have volunteered to help out. They've all made this process go so much more smoothly." Well done guys—and I’ll start collecting addresses for those Springville homes needing a little TLC. (Photo above courtesy of Nick Merritt)

YOUTH SPORT ACTION

If you hadn’t noticed, over the course of the last four weekends, three of them included an all day club volleyball tournament at the high school—and I do mean all day; 8am—11pm. Saturday, February 5th was the last tournament hosted this season. Pictured to the left is an Oriole 11U team that won the 12U championship. Nice job ladies. (Photo courtesy of Michelle Nachazel)

FACE IN THE CROWD: This week’s Face In The Crowd is Springville Grandmother, Barb Coonrod. I caught up with Barb in the stands at Monday night’s Monticello game, and here is what we know; If you had a time machine—what year would you visit? The late 1950’s. I would still be in school and I would do so much more. What did you eat for breakfast? A Jethro sized bowl of Shredded Wheat mixed with Cheerios. Do you have your toilet paper roll from the top or the bottom? The top. What was the first music concert you ever went to? Wanda Jackson.

Thanks Barb—you just never know, at the next Springville event, you could be

more than a Face In The Crowd! Above, “The Queen of Rockabilly” — Wanda Jackson

Friday night had a great platform—it was senior night, Alburnett was in town and baked goods were on sale for a very good cause. The Springville women kicked off the evening with a 58-35 victory. Four players hit double figures including all three seniors. "We played a nice basketball game tonight in all phases. Other than allowing Alburnett to get some easy baskets down low at the end of the third quarter, we played well defensively. Offensively, we moved the basketball well and once again received balanced scoring led by Abbie Neff and Katie Wyman with 16 points each. Hannah Loehr had 10 points, 15 rebounds, and CJ Fitzgerald contributed 10 points and 6 assists", said Head Coach Nate Sanderson. In the night cap the boys fought the good fight but came up short and fell 48-34 to the visiting Pirates. Coach Merritt offered, “We had a pretty good start to the game but just had trouble

maintaining the intensity and defense we needed in the 2nd half. Offensively, we still need to do a better job of taking care of the basketball and knocking down free throws. The potential is there, it's just a matter of whether or not we can get it put together before the end of the year.” Senior Joel Lam had another double/double, finishing with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Senior playmaker Patrick Ray finished with “triple 2’s” if you will—2 points, 2 assists and 2 rebounds. While Friday was Senior Night—it wasn’t the last home game. Mother Nature created a little noise last week, so Monday night was the make up game against Monticello. In girls action, the Lady O’s were looking to play smart and play tough. Monticello played a little smarter and a little tougher, they beat Springville, 42-15. When asked to comment, Coach Sanderson had this to say, "This game was the tale of two halves. Early in the game, though we struggled to score offensively, we were able to slow the game down to keep the ball out of Monticello's hands. Two minutes into the second half, we were within three at 14-11. Then the wheels fell off. We couldn't get a shot to fall, and started to turn the ball over which allowed Monticello to get some easy baskets and stretch the lead out beyond our reach. Monticello did a great job defending us in the half court, and when we were able to find open shots, they just didn't fall for us. Katie Wyman led us in scoring with 6 points. Hannah Loehr chipped in with 8 rebounds." With the loss the Lady O’s end their regular season with an overall record of 8-13 and a Tri-Rivers record of 6-10. They will open tourney play Thursday at Belle Plaine against Belle Plaine at 7pm. In boys action Monday, Springville battled the Panthers but fell, 57-33. The Orioles turned the ball over 24 times and couldn’t stop Monticello’s offense. “Turnovers and inconsistency have been an issue for us all year and that ultimately hurt us. Our energy and intensity were much better which is a great sign and we need that to continue the rest of the year. Congratulations to all seniors on a terrific season” said Coach Nick Merritt. Sophomore Jake Hulett had his sixth double/double of the season with 12 points and 11 boards. Freshman Elias Nissen tallied 8 points including a dunk that raised the roof in Machovec Gym and will deservedly, be talked about for some time—until he does it again of course. Tuesday, was the official end to the regular season. The games featured the boys only as Ed-Co traveled down for a game, and it was a great game to end on as the boys prepare for district play. Springville won, 41-39 on a buzzer-beater lay up by Nissen, on a nice feed from Senior Patrick Ray. It couldn’t have been scripted better. Ray started at the top of the key and drove to his left, as he penetrated the defense Nissen cut across the base line and P-Ray some how slung a pass that Nissen caught and easily laid up on the opposite side of the board for an easy two—time expired and the Orioles won. An elated

Coach Merritt said, “It was a great way to end our regular season and good ending to the seniors’ last home game. Although we didn’t play the best throughout the whole game, we showed great character and toughness down the stretch to get the win. Hopefully this will provide us with some momentum heading into district play next week.” District play begins on Monday when the O’s travel up to Central City, tip off is at 7. Oriole Pride wishes to congratulate all players on a great season, and for the seniors leaving the program—it has been a privilege to watch you compete with such heart.
