Normandie Ridge 25th Anniversary Celebration 5

We are extremely pleased to mark this milestone 25th Anniversary of Normandie Ridge! So much has changed since we opened in 1991 and we remain steadfast in our commitment to serve our residents in the best possible way. We hope that you enjoy your time with us today. Please take the opportunity to sample the food and entertainment, and bid on a basket and check out the crafts and used books for sale.

Of course, the support of the Normandie Ridge Auxiliary is vital to our ability to provide exceptional care and service to our residents. All of the funds raised by

the Auxiliary are used to benefi t Normandie Ridge residents at every level of care. We are very grateful that Auxiliary members donate their time and talents to support Normandie Ridge in so many tangible ways. This year, their outstanding generosity helped provide the equipment for our new outpatient therapy program and purchased an AED (automated external defi brillator) for the Nursing Care Center. The Auxiliary also provides support for the Benevolent Care Fund, which enables us to continue to care for residents who face fi nancial hardships.

On behalf of the staff and residents of Normandie Ridge, thank you for your continued support!

Greetings to all attending this 25th Anniversary Celebration of the Normandie Ridge Senior Living Community!

As we celebrate, I fi rst want to thank the Albright Care Services and Normandie Ridge Administration and Staff for continuing this faith based community, where seniors can live in comfort and safety and receive the care they need.

Thanks to all of our Normandie Ridge Auxiliary members for believing in and supporting the work we do to provide comfort and care for the residents living here. Over the years you have done much and this year alone, with your help, we have supplied funds to purchase the following: a pneumatic therapy table and other equipment for use in the newly established Outpatient Physical Therapy Department to serve the independent residents; a standing lift table for inpatient physical therapy; a new weight chair for the personal care residents; and an AED (Automated External Defi brillator) with the necessary ancillary pieces for the Nursing Department. In addition, we contributed $3,000 to the annual Albright Golf Challenge which benefi ts the Normandie Ridge Benevolent Care Fund. All monies donated locally for benevolent care, including Auxiliary donations, go directly to the Normandie Ridge Benevolent Care Fund.

I also want to thank all of you who have contributed to our special 25th Anniversary Challenge. You have given more through this effort than I could have ever imagined!

Best wishes to all who are working now and in the future on behalf of those who live here. As I’ve said before, I believe what we do is truly a mission and ministry for Christ.

We are delighted that you have joined us to help Normandie Ridge Celebrate its 25th Anniversary. Today’s event provides a unique opportunity for residents of Normandie Ridge and members of the York community to come together for fellowship and a good time. The Celebration Committee has included good food, crafts and entertainment for your enjoyment.

Today’s event is the main fundraiser for the Auxiliary. The work of all the volunteers and your presence benefi ts the residents of Normandie Ridge through the Auxiliary’s activities. The Auxiliary is able to purchase items for the residents because of your support.

Contributions from many people have made this celebration possible. I am grateful to the many volunteers, committee members and staff who make this day a success.

A special thank you goes to the staff in the kitchen for their assistance in food preparation and dining room setup. Donations of time, baked goods, themed baskets and craft items are greatly appreciated.

We are pleased to be able to support and be a part of the quality care that Normandie Ridge provides for the seniors in our area.

Thanks to All!

Welcome to our home and a very special Anniversary Celebration! It’s our 25th year of serving seniors at Normandie Ridge. We have defi nitely become known as one of the best retirement communities in the York area. Last year, our parent corporation, Albright Care Services, topped the century mark with a splendid celebration. The theme was Memories, Reflections and Dreams, with a comprehensive look at the past, present, and plans for the future. That’s what Anniversary Celebrations are all about and our 25th is doing just that.

The Independent Residents’ Association includes all Normandie Ridge residents in the apartments and cottages. We hold monthly meetings and sponsor monthly catered dinners with entertainment. Our Executive Board presents resident ideas, needs and initiatives to the management of Normandie Ridge and works with the staff to address these endeavors.

I am very grateful to the Normandie Ridge Auxiliary for the many ways they work to enhance the lives of ALL the residents of Normandie Ridge. Their fi nancial contributions to the Benevolent Care Fund and for the purchase of equipment and support of programs is so important. I urge everyone to join the Auxiliary!

I want to thank all the offi cers and committee members for their time, effort and cooperation with management staff in making this community such a wonderful place to live. We are indeed a FAMILY OF FRIENDS!

The Normandie Ridge AuxiliaryThe Normandie Ridge Auxiliary was started in 1993 for the purpose of enhancing the comfort and enjoyment of the residents who live at Normandie Ridge. The organization is funded through membership dues, contributions and fundraisers, such as today’s Celebration.

To date, the Auxiliary has contributed over $146,000 for services and equipment that enhance the lives of the residents. Some of the funds have specifi cally been donated to provide benevolent care for residents who are no longer able to continue to pay the full cost of their care.

Membership in the Auxiliary is open to all persons who are interested in the well-being of the residents. Currently the Auxiliary has more than 400 members. Dues are $5 per year. Members receive the Tidings, the Auxiliary’s newsletter, which is published three times a year to inform members of the Auxiliary’s activities and projects. Members are also encouraged to attend the three general meetings which are held at Normandie Ridge on the second Monday of February, May and September.

24 Normandie Ridge 25th Anniversary Celebration

In 1980, a group of United Methodists in the York District

of the Central Pennsylvania Conference began discussing the need for a continuing care retirement community. There was a large concentration of United Methodists in York and no senior community to serve their needs.

In May 1981, the Rev. Paul Zeiber, chair of the Council on Ministries of the York District, established a taskforce to study the need for senior housing in the region and to make recommendations as to how those needs could be met. Eleven individuals were invited to be on the taskforce, initially led by the Rev. Charles Zimmerman. In September of that year, the taskforce reported that there was a great need for and much interest in the development of a nursing home within the York District. Additionally, they found there was a great need for effi ciency apartments for seniors.

In 1983, the taskforce, now 16 members strong and under the leadership of the Rev. Edward Yarnell, moved forward with plans to meet the identifi ed needs. The taskforce was incorporated under the name United Methodist Care, soon known as U.M. CARE, with the purpose of establishing an independent housing community for seniors in the York District.

In 1986, it was estimated that the total cost of the project over a ten year period would be $15 million, and at a minimum, $500,000 would be needed toget the project off the ground. The Capital Funds Program of the Central Pennsylvania Conference denied the initial request for startup funds to assist U.M. CARE because a nursing care center was not included in the original plan. Other funding options were explored, including bond issuing companies, bank loans and the possibility of inviting an existing

United Methodist health care and residential institution to expand into the York District as a partner. Contributions from York area churches were essential in keeping the project alive.

Additionally, several individuals had included U.M CARE in their estate plans, on the condition that benevolent care would be provided to residents in need when the facility was opened. This would align its mission with existing benevolent institutions in the Central Pennsylvania Conference. It was one of those institutions, Lewisburg United Methodist Homes, that made it possible for this dream to come true.

In 1987, an invitation from U.M. CARE was extended to the Lewisburg organization to become a partner in building a United Methodist Home in York. By then, in addition to building

independent living apartments, plans had grown to include a full service facility with a skilled nursing care center and personal care apartments. The initial site chosen was a 46 acre parcel in Windsor Township. However, upon the advice of legal counsel, the location was changed to the current one in West Manchester Township comprised of 26 acres as it was near established shopping malls, restaurants, banks and other health care facilities. The smaller size, more level ground and potential for greater density of living units meant it would be less expensive to develop.

The purchase of the current site was completed in 1988 and U.M. CARE formally partnered with the Lewisburg organization, which had been renamed in 1987 as

United Methodist Continuing Care Services of Lewisburg. The community to be built was named the York United Methodist Home. A groundbreaking ceremony was held July 28, 1990, and the plans featured 71 Garden Cottages, a 64-bed Nursing Care Center and a two story 66-bed Personal Care apartment building.

In 1992, the York United Methodist Home opened, providing a senior living community for the people of south central Pennsylvania. An open house for the fi rst two completed cottages was held in August and the fi rst residents moved into them in October. The community formally opened with a consecration ceremony and open house on January 16, 1993.

In 1996, market research revealed that people found it diffi cult to remember the name United Methodist Continuing Care Services, and also mistakenly thought the facilities and services were only open to members of United Methodist Churches. Some prospective residents also objected to their new address containing the word “Home”. In May, the board approved changing the name of the garden cottages to Normandie Ridge at York United Methodist Home. The corporate name was changed to Albright Care Services to honor Jacob Albright, the founder of the Evangelical Church. It was members of this denomination who met at Central Oak Heights in West Milton, PA, and established the original Home in Lewisburg in 1916. Soon the entire York campus was renamed Normandie Ridge.

In the spring of 1998, an additional 18 acres of land was purchased, bringing the campus to a total of 45 acres. The fi nal construction phase of the garden cottages was also completed that year, bringing the total number of cottages to 73. In October 2002, Normandie Ridge opened Manchester Court and Commons. Manchester Court offered apartment style living for independent residents. The Commons area offered a fi tness center, library, computer center, general store, heated indoor swimming pool, restaurant, café and additional amenities.

A ribbon cutting ceremony in February 2015 celebrated the newly renovated area in the Nursing Care Center with new dining facilities, an updated nursing station and rehabilitation space.

In January 2015, a portion of the Personal Care Center was renovated into Alcove Apartments which are designed to extend the ability of residents to live independently. The former Arboretum activity room space was converted to a waiting room and doctor’s offi ce. The Personal

Care Center continues to provide residents assistance with physical care while allowing them to maintain independence.

Albright Care Services has always been and remains a non-profi t, faith-based organization, whose mission includes a strong commitment of providing benevolent care to those most in need. Once someone becomes part of the Normandie Ridge family, they continue to receive care even if they outlive their fi nancial resources. This is possible through generous donations of churches, the Normandie Ridge Auxiliary, individuals, businesses, organizations and our own residents and staff.

28 Normandie Ridge 25th Anniversary Celebration

As we celebrate the fi rst 25 years of Normandie Ridge Senior Living Community,

it is important to recognize the fi rst residents who moved to what was founded as the York United Methodist Home. I recently interviewed Eunice Knowles who, along with her husband Jim, moved to the community in October 1992, occupying one of the fi rst of seven cottages available. Sadly, Jim passed away in 2014.

Eunice Elizabeth Lederer was born on July 9, 1926, to Melvin and Ethyle (Gott) Lederer in Washington, D.C. She and her two siblings grew up in various communities throughout the state of Maryland, as her father was a pastor in what was The Methodist Church and is now The United Methodist Church.

She met her husband, Jim, who was serving in the U.S. Navy, when he and some friends visited her church, Gatch Memorial Methodist Church. They married and Jim became a building contractor, eventually owning his own business. Eunice was a registered nurse and fi rst used her nursing skills as a private duty nurse. Next, she worked in a small hospital in Baltimore and later in a 45 bed nursing home. Her fi nal job as a nurse was in a methadone clinic for the Baltimore County Department of Health. Eunice and Jim enjoyed volunteering with Habitat for Humanity alongside college and high school students. They also enjoyed traveling and loved telling the story about one trip out West when Jim was asked if he was Amish because he had a beard and their vehicle had a Pennsylvania license plate!

It doesn’t take long to realize that the most important work in Eunice’s life was being a good wife to Jim and a loving mother to their four children: Ron, Doug, Elle and Nelson.

When asked what her most important objective was in raising her children she said, “That they have a good education and that they were involved in the church.” Her family now includes six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

In 1991, when it was time for Eunice and Jim to retire, they decided to look for a retirement community so their children would not have to make that decision for them. Eunice was volunteering in her church’s offi ce, Cowenton UMC, when a letter about plans for building the York United Methodist Home that had been sent to all United Methodist Churches in Baltimore County caught her attention.

Eunice and Jim went to a meeting held to explain what would be included in this new senior living community and, as she tells the story, “We knew from day one it was the place for us.” They put down a deposit, sold their home in White Marsh, Maryland, and for six months lived in a travel trailer until their cottage was ready for occupancy. They moved in and never looked back or regretted their decision.

Normandie Ridge 25th Anniversary Celebration   29

In the 25 years she has lived at Normandie Ridge, Eunice notes that all of her needs have been met. Whenever she or Jim needed help with anything, they always received a positive response from the staff, and that continues to be true. Eunice offers this advice to all residents: “Always speak up for yourself if you feel your needs are not being met.”

In summing up her thoughts about Normandie Ridge, Eunice referenced a small plaque she purchased and placed on a bench on her front patio that says, “Life is Good Here.”

In Memory

Their cottage at Normandie Ridge became home and the neighbors moving into the other cottages soon became friends. They all worked together to make it a true community. Due to Jim’s construction experience, he began helping in a volunteer capacity as new phases of the community were added. When the Nursing and Personal Care units were complete, Eunice helped staff put linens on the beds for the fi rst occupants. She explained that, “As a nurse, I certainly knew how to make up beds.” As the apartments were being built, Eunice became President of the Residents’ Association. She mentioned the residents’ help in placing luminaries for the Grande Illumination and she was one of eight residents who started the fi rst library on campus.

Chicken corn soup is a part of the 25 year tradition. For the fi rst few years, a group of women would get together at the Dover Fire Company kitchen to peel potatoes, shell hardboiled eggs and pick the chicken off the bones. The ingredients were combined and cooked there and put in the fi re company cooler. On the morning of the celebration, the containers of soup were transported to the York United Methodist Home to be served.

For the last 12 years, the celebration has been held inside, but the fi rst 13 celebrations were held outside. Initially, there was a parking lot about where the current swimming pool is. Tents and tables were set up there for serving food and for the entertainment. When the building additions were begun it was necessary to move the celebration to the parking lot outside the assisted living/personal care wing. What a trek it was to roll the soup on carts from the current kitchen to the tents!

Another change has been in the production of the program booklet, which was initially typed on a typewriter and the layout was designed using a cut and paste method. A commercial printer copied, stapled and folded 9” x 6” booklets.

Today, the potatoes are purchased peeled and diced and the eggs are already cooked and shelled. The 40 dozen ears of corn are purchased and the corn is cut off the cobs and frozen in early August by a group of volunteers.

The 80 pounds of chicken are purchased already cooked and diced. On the Friday night before the celebration, two couples combine the ingredients in the Normandie Ridge kitchen.

Even though the preparations are easier, the recipe used for the soup is the same as it was 25 years ago. The original recipe came from the Dover Fire Co.

When inclement weather threatened in 2005, all celebration activities were moved inside. Today, chicken corn soup, apple dumplings, homemade pies and baked goods in addition to shopping for crafts, can be enjoyed in a climate controlled environment. The entertainment is enjoyed in the atrium.

Today, the program booklet is designed on a computer and printed in color. Albright Care Services staff prints, folds and staples the booklet into an 8.5” X 11” format.

Twenty-fi ve years ago preparations for the annual celebrations were a bit more laborious than today.
