How can we promote Jesus’ message in a society that tries to confine Christianity to a Sunday afternoon TV Slot? How do we promote Jesus' teachings of unity and sharing in a world of division and materialism? How do we campaign for peace and love in a world hampered by indifference and injustice? We might feel small in face of impacting our beliefs on an unbelieving world. That we feel small perhaps helps us to understand the task the early disciples faced in Luke’s Gospel. The scene set in today’s gospel must have looked something like a biblical ‘campaign trail’. Jesus sent seventy-two disciples ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit to prepare the way. Jesus knew that they were up against the odds. He describes them as lambs among wolves. “The harvest is abundant,” he says, “but the labourers are few.” More credit then, to those early disciples that the Christian message has survived for over two thousand years. What can we learn from their obvious success? Jesus gave his early disciples some important practical advice. His first words of advice were for us to travel light. How can we concentrate on impacting Jesus’ will if we are burdened with other concerns? Having a clear and focussed mind is crucial to any kind of success. Next Jesus advocates relying on hospitality and walking away from opposition. Perhaps today we would call it ‘knowing one’s audience’. In a nutshell, Jesus is asking us to focus on the job in hand, avoid distraction, and not to be deterred by opposition or setbacks. God’s message needs ‘selling’ just as much now as it did two thousand years ago. Two thousand years later, our world still needs a lot of 'fixing'. The job to be done might seem impossible, but we take encouragement from those few early disciples and the scale of their obvious success. To give up on the job would be to negate the work of those who have gone before us. If we care at all about the work our predecessors have put in, it's our turn to take to God's campaign trail.

Gospel Reflection for the Fourteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

God's Campaign Trail! INSTRUCTIONS FOR YOUR OWN FUNERAL MASS

It may be useful to think about your own wishes regarding the arrangements for your funeral. It may help those family and friends during a sad and difficult time especially if they are not familiar with Catholic practices. Also for anyone who has relatives in care homes the section on the back page is important to be filled out and has proved most valuable for staff and relatives in relation to the sacraments and when to contact a priest.

Forms are available at the back of church from the Pastoral Care Project for you to take and if you wish to fill out. Please keep it together with your papers/will or give to an appropriate person. If you wish you can return a copy to Fr Adrian to be kept at Church. It may be useful for your next of kin to be informed you have filled in this form and where it can be located. If you need any assistance with the filling in of this form please contact the parish office .

REPOSITORY STALL

The Repository Stall is located at the back of Church at the left hand side of the organ. There is a wide selection of items for sale including Mass cards, greeting cards, prayer cards, statues, rosaries, candles and many other items. There is also a variety of stock for special occasions , Baptism, First Holy Communion, Confirmation and other seasonal items

REFERENCES Fr Adrian is often asked to give references for parishioners...this is never a problem but it is a courtesy to ask Fr Adrian before his name is put down as a referee. Also if any parishioner is applying for a job in a Catholic school the parish priest’s reference is crucial. This reference is a testimony that the said candidate is a practising Catholic within the parish. Many thanks

Pope Francis’s Prayer Intention for July

There is a belief inbuilt from childhood that justice will always prevail. As we grow older we realise that justice needs a helping hand. We realise specifically, that there are many without a voice who unable to defend themselves. These might include the elderly, the

disabled, the imprisoned or the enslaved. We all need to keep an eye open for the injustices going on around us. This month we are invited to join in Pope Francis's prayer intention “…..That those who administer justice may work with integrity and that the injustice which prevails in the world may not have the last word.”

Care for Our Common Planet

There is a growing scientific consensus that keeping global warming to no more than 1.5C by the end of the century is essential to avoid severe climate impacts, with extreme weather, extinction of species, and millions of humans fleeing lethal heat and rising seas. Part of the answer is to plant trees…. billions and billions of them! This is something we can all do. To do:- Plant additional trees in your own garden. Send neighbouring schools the link to the Woodland

Trust. The Woodland Trust sends out free tree packs for schools to plant.

Contact the local council and request additional trees in our parks and cities.

Write to the local MP or look for online gov.uk petitions demanding that the government increases its tree planting pledge.

Join campaigns that prevent destruction of forests. Spread the word…. Start a Facebook campaign.

There will be Mass on Saturday 13th July at 12 Noon for the Secular Franciscan Order’s Regional Meeting. Parishioners are welcome to attend Mass.
