Before You Arrive

GETTING TO KNOW TAIWAN

Geography

Taiwan is an island on the western edge of the Pacific Ocean. It is located off the southeastern coast of

Mainland China. To the north lies Japan and to the south is the Philippines.

Climate

Taiwan has a humid subtropical climate, with long hot summers and moderate winters. Summers are

very hot (temperatures range from 26 to 35 degrees Celsius.)

Winters are relatively short (mid December through February), the temperature rarely drops to 10

degrees Celsius.

Population

Taiwan’s population is around 23 million. The ethnic groups may be roughly divided among the

Taiwanese (84%, descendants of early Han Chinese immigrants who arrived in Taiwan starting in the

17th century), mainland Chinese (14%, Chinese immigrants who arrived in Taiwan after 1945), and

indigenous peoples (2%).

Religion

Religions include, but not limited to, Buddhism, Taoism, Christianity/Catholicism, Islam, etc. Religious

freedom is guaranteed under the constitution.

Electricity

Currency

The currency in Taiwan is the New Taiwan Dollar (NTD) and the exchange rate to one US dollar (1 USD)

is approximately NTD30.

NTD bills come in five denominations: NTD 100, NTD 200,

NTD 500, NTD 1,000, NTD 2,000; NTD also comes in four

coins: NTD 1, NTD 5, NTD 10, and NTD 50.

Time Zone

Taiwan is 8 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT

+0800).

There is no daylight saving time in Taiwan

Language

Languages spoken in Taiwan include Mandarin, Taiwanese,

Hakka, and aboriginal languages.

認識台灣

地理環境

台灣位於太平洋西邊，中國大陸東南邊之小島，北臨日本，南近菲律賓。

氣候

屬於潮濕的亞熱帶氣候，四季明顯，夏季較長且溫度高(約攝氏 26-35度)。每年 12月至 2月為冬季，時

間相對較短，氣溫很少低於攝氏 10度。

台灣人口約二千三百萬人，大約可分為閩南人(約 84%，含早期的漢人平埔族及客家人)、外省人(約 14%，

自 1945年從中國大陸遷居來台)及原住民(約 2%)。

宗教

涵蓋很廣且不設限，包含佛教、道教、基督教、天主教、伊斯蘭教等，是個宗教信仰自由的地方。

在台灣使用的貨幣為新台幣(NTD)，與美

大部份使用中文及台語，但是亦可使用英語、客家語及原住民

Airport Pick-up Service 接機服務

There are four international airports in Taiwan: Taoyuan International Airport (TPE, 140 km from THU),

Taipei Songshan Airport (TSA, 165 km from THU), Taichung Airport (RMQ, 12 km from THU), and

Kaohsiung International Airport (KHH, 200 km from THU). The majority of international flights arrive at

Taoyuan International Airport. Pick-up services are provided at Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) and

Taichung Airport (TXG).

1. Upon arrival at the airport, make your way to the meeting points indicated on the maps shown on the

next pages. There will be THU IBP buddies wearing hot pink T-shirts (shirt images below) waiting for

you. They will be holding up a “Tunghai University” poster.

(Please check the map next page for the meeting points)

2. If you encounter any trouble finding the IBP buddies, please go to the information desk for help.

3. The IBP buddies who pick you up at the airport are not the buddies assigned to you for the semester.

4. If you have any questions, please e-mail exchange.g@thu.edu.tw, we will get back to you as soon as

possible.

台灣擁有四座國際機場：桃園國際機場(TPE)、松山機場(TSA)、台中航空站(TXG)，以及高雄國際機場

(KHH)，直飛飛機提供台灣與其他國家相當便利的交通服務，由於大部份的國際航班皆降落於桃園國際機場，

本校只提供桃園國際機場(TPE)及台中航空站(TXG)之接機服務。

1. 在你抵達機場之後，請留心寫有東海大學的海報，國際接待志工同學會身穿粉紅色ㄒ恤在機場等你(請參

考下面圖片)，並參考下一頁地圖所指示的會面地點等待國際接待志工同學來接你。請詳閱下頁地圖確認

會面點。

2. 假如你在機場無法找到國際接待志工的同學，請向服務台尋求協助。

3. 於機場接你的國際志工同學並不是負責服務你一整個學期的接待志工同學。

Intercity Buses

1. Taiwan’s long distance highway transportation services are provided by private transportation

companies: Guo-Guang Bus Corp., Union Bus, Ho Shin Bus, Free Go Bus Crop., and Aloha

Bus. Some of them provide 24 hour services.

2. You can take a bus from Airport to Chao-Ma (朝馬) bus station, Taichung (台中). It takes around 2-3

hours and costs NT$ 250~300 (USD $10) from Taipei or Kaohsiung. Then, take a taxi to Tunghai

University (東海大學). It takes around 15 minutes and costs about NT$180 (USD $6).

High Speed Rail

1. You can come to the Tunghai University by taking the Taiwan High Speed Rail. It takes around one

hour and costs NT $590 (USD $20) from Taoyuan, or NT $860 (USD $29) from Kaohsiung. In

addition to the ride, you also need to take into account the travel time between the airport and the

rail station, as well as from the rail station to Tunghai University. It may take around 2 hours.

2. From Taoyuan International Airport, take Union Bus to Taoyuan (桃園) High Speed Rail Station.

Then, take a one-way ride to Taichung (台中). Once in Taichung, you can take a taxi, Taichung Bus

(No. 69), or a free shuttle bus (No. 161) to Tunghai University.

公路客運

1. 台灣長程的公路交通皆由私人公司提供：國光客運、統聯客運、和欣客運、飛狗巴士以及阿囉哈客運。

有些客運公司提供 24 小時的服務。

2. 你可自機場搭乘巴士抵達台中朝馬站，從台北或高雄出發費時約兩至三小時，費用約台幣 250 至 300

元，接著可轉乘計程車至東海大學，費時約 15 分鐘，花費約台幣 180 元。

台灣高速鐵路

1. 你可以搭乘台灣高速鐵路至東海大學，費時約 1 小時，從桃園出發花費台幣 590 元，從高雄出發花費

台幣 860 元，除了高鐵所費的時間以外，也需考慮從機場至高鐵站所花費的時間，因此所費時間共計

約 2 小時。

2. 當你抵達桃園國際機場之後，需搭乘統聯巴士至桃園高鐵站，之後購買單程票至台中高鐵站，於抵達

台中後，可搭乘計程車、台中巴士(69 號)或免費接駁車(161 號)至東海大學。

Accommodations 住宿

1. All exchange students are arranged to stay at Building 30 on campus. The fee is NT$9,600 per

semester for the academic year 2016.

2. Dorm phone number is 04-23594359 + room number.

3. Each room is shared among four students, and each student is provided with a set of bed, desk, chair,

closet, and bookshelf. Living rooms, shower rooms, toilets, and launderettes are shared. There is a

supermarket nearby campus where you can purchase your groceries.

4. Internet LAN is available in every room (limited by 8G/day, Wi-Fi is not available). Internet cords are not

included.

5. International exchange students who choose to live off-campus have to arrange the accommodations

by themselves. Please make sure to inform the office of International Education and Programs of your

correct address.

6. Families or friends are not allowed to stay at dorms. Visitors may stay at the Alumni House on campus.

VISA / ARC Information 有關簽證及居留證

A. General Information 一般介紹

You have to apply for a valid visa in your country before entering Taiwan.

Visa information is as below:

1. Visa types for exchange students:

VISITOR VISA: With this short-term Visa, you can stay for less than 180 days.

RESIDENT VISA: It’s a long-term Visa that allows you to stay in Taiwan for more than 180 days.

Landing Visa and Visa- Exempt Entry are not recommended for exchange students.

2. VALID UNTIL or ENTER BEFORE: The Visa valid date. For example, if the date is October 8, 2016 the

Visa will be invalid after October 8, 2016.

3. DURATION OF STAY: The number of days you can stay from the next day you arrive.

4. ENTRIES: There are two types: SINGLE or MULTIPLE.

5. VISA NUMBER: You shall fill in this number on the E/D card.

6. REMARS: The remark for exchange students is FS.

Please contact the overseas missions of the Republic of China (ROC) in your country for the required

documents, latest information and advices on which type of visa you should apply for.

你必須在抵達台灣前，先在自己國家申請有效簽證。

簽證資訊如下：

1. 交換學生可以申請入境的簽證類別：

停留簽證：係屬短期簽證，在台停留期間在 180 天以內。

居留簽證：係屬於長期簽證，在台停留期間為 180 天以上。

不建議以落地簽證及單次簽證入境台灣。

2. 入境限期：係指簽證持有人使用該簽證之期限，例如 VALID UNTIL (或 ENTER BEFORE) OCTOBER

8 ,2016 即 2016 年 10 月 8 日後該簽證即失效，不得繼續使用。

3. 停留期限：指簽證持有人使用該簽證後，自入

境之翌日（次日）零時起算，可在台停留之期

限。

4. 入境次數：分為單次及多次兩種。

5. 簽證號碼：旅客於入境應於 E/D 卡填寫本欄號

碼。

6. 註記：交換生簽證註記欄代碼為 FS。

B. Visitor VISA 停留簽證

1. If your study period is only one semester, or if you stay in Taiwan for less than six months, a visitor visa

will be sufficient.

2. It is strongly advised that you apply for a multiple-entry Visitor Visa if you plan to travel internationally

during your stay. It is not possible to change a single-entry visitor visa to a multiple-entry visa once you

are in Taiwan.

3. Visitor Visa holders are permitted to stay for 60 or 90 days. You may apply at local service centers of

the National Immigration Agency for an extension (max. 180 days) within 15 days before the current

visa expires.

1. 假如你的交換期間僅有一學期或停留台灣時間少於六個月，僅需申請停留簽證即可。

2. 假如您交換期間有計畫出國旅遊，提醒你務必申請停留簽證時需申請多次入國停留簽證，一旦你抵達台

灣後，就無法將單次入出國停留簽證改為多次。

3. 停留簽證持有人可停留台灣 60 至 90 天不等，你可向當地移民署申請停留簽證延期(至多 180 天)，停留

簽證延期需於簽證到期前 15 天辦理完成。

C. Resident VISA 居留簽證

1. If your study period is two semesters and/or exceeds 180 days, we strongly suggest you to apply for a

Resident Visa. You will eventually change your resident visa to an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC;

see the ARC section below).

2. If you originally enter with a Visitor Visa but will stay for more than 180 days, you must change to a

Resident Visa once you are in Taiwan (at the Bureau of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs).

3. Visa offices located both in Taiwan and in other countries require a Type B health certificate for the

application of Resident Visa.

1. 假設你的交換期間為 2 學期(1 年)或是停留台灣期間超過 180 天，你需於抵台前申請居留簽證，之後可

於抵台後將居留簽證轉為居留證(請看以下說明)。

2. 假如你停留台灣期間多於 180 天，並於抵台時持有停留簽證，你必須至台灣外交部將停留簽證轉為居留

簽證。就先前的交換學生經驗，部分地區的外交部官員於你申請時不同意簽發居留簽證，如遇到此類情

形，請申請停留簽證抵台後轉為居留簽證。

3. 不管你是於台灣或是海外台灣辦事處申請居留簽證，都需提供健康檢查表乙表。

D. ARC (Alien Resident Certificate) 居留證：

1. Students who have obtained a Resident Visa before arriving in Taiwan must apply for an Alien

Resident Certificate (ARC) at the National Immigration Agency within 15 days after entering Taiwan.

2. For international exchange students, the Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) serves as their temporary ID

card which can prove your resident status in Taiwan. It is a very important document and we advise

you to take good care of it and pay attention to its expiration date!

Health Insurance 醫療保險

1. It is strongly recommended that all exchange students purchase a health insurance policy in their home

country. Taiwan National Health Insurance (NHI) is only applicable to students staying in Taiwan for

longer than a year and holding an ARC. Exchange students who stay for less than a year have to

purchase commercial insurance on their own.

2. All exchange students are asked to provide a copy of health insurance during the orientation meeting.

Students who do not provide proof of health insurance will be requested to purchase the basic

commercial group insurance prepared by Tunghai University.

3. Documents required for insurance claims: Doctor’s Certificate (Please inform the doctor that this

document is for insurance claim) and medical payment receipts.

4. The Commercial Group Insurance provided by Tunghai University cost around NT$ 550 (USD$18) for

four months (one semester) or NT$ 1,510 for eleven months (two semesters). It is provided by the Trans

Globe Life Insurance Inc. (http://www.transglobe.com.tw/).

1. 有關保險，我們強力建議所有交換生在當地國或原居住地辦理，因台灣法令限制，必須持有居留證，且長

期居留於台灣才能辦理保險，短期交換學生無法辦理全民健康保險（無論是大陸地區或日本歐美等國家）

只能自行購買商業保險。

2. 交換生在新生說明會時提交「醫療保險証明」之影本，未能出具證明者，我們會強制學生參加東海大學準

備的基本「商業團體保險」，保險範圍僅限於意外醫療（比方說交通事故意外等）與急診室超過 6 個小時，

對於一般感冒發燒、牙疼、皮膚過敏等一般症狀就醫費用，是無法申請經費補助的。

3. 申請理賠應備之文件：醫生開立的證明書及（醫師說要申請保險核銷用）與就診相關收據。

4. 本校提供之「商業團體保險」由全球人壽保險公司提供(http://www.transglobe.com.tw/)，費用為 NTD 550

（四個月）或 NTD 1,510（十一個月），保險額度如下：

Opening a Bank Account 郵局 /銀行開立帳戶

A. Bank and Post Office

The post offices in Taiwan provide both postal and banking services. One post office is located on

Tunghai campus (near the Office of International Education and Programs). There is also an office of

Mega International Commercial Bank on campus. For more information, please visit

B. Documents required to open a financial account in the post office or the bank are:

1. Original and a copy of passport.

2. Original and a copy of ARC or a certificate of ROC Uniform ID Number.

3. A cash deposit of at least NT$100.

4. A Guardian Consent Form for Financial Account notarized by Taiwan’s embassy (or representative

office) (for students under the age of 20).

Chinese Language Center 華語中心

The Chinese Language Center (CLC) at Tunghai University was established in 1970, the first such

center in central Taiwan.

The CLC is reputable for its small-class size, friendly learning environment, and satisfactory learning

outcomes. In addition, the CLC is nestled amongst beautiful trees, flowers, and bird chirping, making it an

excellent place for studying Chinese.

Course Contents and Schedule

Each year the center offers three semesters of study, including fall, spring and summer semester. Fall and

1. Four-skill integrated (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) Chinese classes are offered at

According to the Civil Code of the Republic of China, if an applicant for opening a bank/postal account has not yet

become a legal adult (that is, under the age of 20 and is unmarried), s/he must submit a letter of consent by

his/her statutory agent which has been authenticated by an overseas mission (that is, embassy, consulate,

representative office, etc.) of the Republic of China (Taiwan) or by a letter of consent by his/her guardian in

Taiwan. If the applicant indicates that according to the law of his/her own country, there is a different regulation

about adulthood, s/he can submit the relevant document which has been authenticated by the overseas mission

(that is, embassy, consulate, representative office, etc.) of the Republic of China (Taiwan) as proof.

1. One copy of your Taiwan entry visa.

2. One passport ID photo against a white background that has been taken within 6 months. (used for ARC)

3. Proof of health insurance for your stay in Taiwan.

4. Students under the age of 20 intending to open an financial account in Taiwan must bring a consent form

signed by a guardian or parent. The consent form must also be authenticated by the ROC representative

office abroad.

5. Fees to be paid are as below.

THU Personal Information Collection Statement

1. According to Personal Information Protection Act (hereinafter ”the Ordinance”) Article 8 and Article 9,

your personal data collected from you will be used by Tunghai University （hereinafter ”THU”） for the

purpose of completing your registration process.

2. This is a statement to inform you of your rights under the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance.

3. Personal information is provided by you as an applicant through the completion of application forms

designated for various purposes, namely for admission to a program of study, for an exchange program,

for hall admissions, and for provision of facilities or services. Data collected are used specifically for the

purposes prescribed in the application forms and will serve

(a) as report the loss of your student card to the EasyCard Company. We will provide your name,

birthday, school name, student ID and student card number to the EasyCard Company.

(b) as evidence for verification of the applicant's examination results, academic records, official

student records, and other information as required by the relevant regulations and procedures of

the University.

4. Personal data will be kept confidential and handled by the University's staff members. The University

may transfer some of the data to designated persons appointed to undertake its academic and

administrative functions.

5. Under the provisions of the Ordinance, you have the right to request the THU to ascertain whether it

holds your personal data, to be given a copy, to delete, and to apply for correction of the data, if

deemed incorrect.
