My Dear Parishioners, We are in the midst of summer and so many people are on vacation, or planning for one in the very near future. Our office of Catechetical Ministry (Religious Education), is taking in registration forms, recruiting new catechists, buying books and supplies that will be needed for the year ahead. As I reflect on these past summer days and also reflect on today’s Gospel, I realize that FAITH is difficult on a day to day basis. Yes, we come to Mass each week which strengthens our faith. But what happens to our faith during the week when we are faced with challenges of life?? (money, job status, food for our family, etc.) For me, I become like the crowd in the Gospel who come to Jesus asking for a sign so that they will believe. The miracle of the loaves and fishes was not enough. (They didn’t get it!!) There have been times this year when I needed more signs ( I didn’t get it) so that I knew that I was not alone. I could not feel the presence of Christ around me. I keep telling myself, “Have Faith!” I had a medical procedure done in June, and during my recovery time, God gave me signs, I was fed and my faith was nourished. The timing of my surgery was good because I was home for the things that needed tending to. My faith is what helped me get through my days of recovery. Good friends taking time to share a meal with me also helped to witness Jesus in my friends. Jesus said, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.” I pray for the people in my life who are like the crowd with Jesus who ask, “What can we do to accomplish the works of God?” I share that an open heart and being nourished through the Eucharist is what guides me in knowing the works of God. In the days ahead, I continue to pray for the our Religious Education Program that I will have enough catechists, that parents will take an active interest in their child’s formation, and that everyone will be open to experiencing God in each other.

May God continue to bless the community of St. Mary, Barbara Zarka

Me sigo diciendo: "¡Ten fe!"

Our hearts go out to Fr. Johannes whose grandmother just died. This resulted in a quick trip to Germany and presiding at her funeral. On the other hand, it resulted, also, in some lovely time with family, reminiscing, discussing the US, sharing joys and sorrows, consolations and desolations. When our loved ones die, it’s a chance for all of us to reflect on our theology of resurrection. Do we truly believe that life is changed, not ended? Fr. Jose often quotes his grandmother at funerals: we die three times. First, when our physical bodies die. Second, when we are put into the ground. And last and finally when no one remembers us. This was a theme in the beautiful homily at Bishop Rich’s funeral: Bishop Rich will always live in our memories and stories of him. The prayers for a funeral are beautiful and comforting. The name of Jesus and the name of the deceased are woven throughout, mingling the memories of two important people whose earthly lives have ended. Two important people who are living the resurrection. One of the prayers of commendation in the funeral rite captures this: Trusting in God, we have prayed together for our sister, Elli, and now we come to the last farewell. There is sadness in parting, but we take comfort in the hope that one day we shall see Elli again and enjoy her friendship. Although this congregation will disperse in sorrow, the mercy of God will gather us together again in the joy of His kingdom. Therefore, let us console one another in the faith in Jesus Christ.
