Twenty Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 9, 2016 2 Kings 5:14-17 2 Timothy 2:8-13
Luke 17:11-19
Dear Parishioners, All three of our readings this week explore
major questions of faith. Habakkuk wonders why God allows violence, ruin, and misery. Saint Paul reminds Timothy that God gives us a spirit “of power and love and self-control.” Luke has Jesus explaining to the disciples that even the tiniest faith should inspire us to fulfill not just the letter of the law, do all we have been commanded, but the spirit; do not the least expected but to go way beyond our requirements. These questions: why God allows bad things to happen; how God calls us to love; if God delights in our humble excess in living the commandments can trouble our faith. Yet, if we prayerfully struggle for answers, our faith is deepened and strengthened. Many thinkers with deep faith have struggled over the pain and suffering in our world and ask, like Habakkuk, why does God allow this? The concept of free will and our human responsibility for suffering is challenging and troubling. We see answers in Paul and Jesus: if we obey the commandment of love and humbly obey it to excess, we will comfort, not injure. As the wag said: “It’s not that Christianity has failed; no one has tried it!” If more of the world, especially those with lots of power, practiced Christian living, we’d have the Kingdom of God on earth. We can each do our part to build a little corner of that kingdom by living our faith. May God bless you in your efforts to live your baptismal promises in this year of mercy.
Peace, Rose Barry

Paz, Rose Barry

Our catechetical year has begun!! You are still able to pick up registration forms in the Religious Education
Office and also the Parish Office. Beginning November 1st, we cannot count the year as being first year for sacramental preparation. Please call our office for further information. Our number is 408-847-2652.
Weekend Liturgy Questions/Comments 10/2/16 1. Jesus responds to the Apostles’ request by pointing out that a tiny
mustard seed grows to greatness, even though the magnificent mulberry tree has vast deep roots. It only takes a small amount of faith, then, to accomplish great things.
2. Jesus holds up the servant for admiration because the servant did all that was asked of him. Do people sometimes ask you to do too many things? Does it seem unfair?
3. Jesus says today that a tiny amount of faith counts. Can you share a story of your mustard-seed faith?
Tickets for the St. Mary School Men’s Club Bi-Annual Spaghetti Dinner are available now. The Spaghetti Dinner will be held on Friday, October 7th, celebrating 55 continuous years of serving dinners to raise money for St. Mary School and after school sports programs. Dinner will be served in the school gym. Take out service begins at 4:30pm and the sit down dinner is served from 5:00pm-8:00pm. Tickets are $10.00 for adults and $8.00 for seniors and children. Tickets are available from a St. Mary School student, at the school office and at the dinner on October 7th.
We will begin our Children's Liturgy of the Word this weekend at the 5:00pm Mass and on Sunday at the 11:00am Mass. This ministry is in need of ministers!!! This ministry is the easiest of all ministries because the time involved is short and so is the preparation. If you would like to share the Word with the young members of our community, please call Barbara in the Religious Education Office at 408-847-2652.
Bible Mass Fifth grade students at St. Mary School received Bibles at a special school-wide Mass on September 20th. The students’ bibles were blessed and they were encouraged to read them frequently with great love and faith. Bibles are an important part of our Catholic identity at St. Mary School. Students learn to locate Bible references in the Bible, and then read and interpret the passages. Fifth graders may create storyboards or perform skits based on Bible passages. In sixth grade, students use Bibles frequently as they study the Old Testament and work on a Jesse Tree project. Seventh and eighth grade students work on Scripture of the Week projects.
There will be a meeting for all religious education catechists on Thursday, October 6th at 7pm in the Common Room of St. Francis Center. All catechists are encouraged to attend so that they may receive all information about the activities for the month of October.
Parking Lot Safety As you have probably noticed if you are at the parish for weekday morning masses, the parking lot is jam packed with families dropping their students off and everyone’s safety is always our first priority! Please do not park in the first row, closest to the fields prior to 8:15am on school days, as this is our “drop off” lane. If you are in the parking lot during the morning or afternoon rush, please be extra careful of our students and families and always use the crosswalks, as it is difficult to see people walking between cars. Also, please be mindful of the two reserved parking spaces for our families that were the highest bidders at our annual Blue & White Auction last year. They paid to use those parking spaces during any school events, including pick up and drop off. Thank you for your attention to this very important matter.
The first preparation session for First Reconciliation will be held on Tuesday, October 11th at 7:00pm in the Church. Fr. Robert will facilitate this first session as a "Teaching Mass." This Mass is for BOTH children and Parents.
