Sounds For A Summer NightSome weeks ago in this space we said that what

was needed in the industry was a new sound, something novel to spice up what was getting tobe a pretty routine output. Well, the new soundis here and it's the sound of the novelties.

It is not surprising therefore, to find "the Bikinisong" by Brian Hyland on Kapp in the numberone slot on the charts this week, while such gim-micky arrangements as "Yogi," by the Ivy Threeon Shell; "Bongo Bongo Bongo," by Preston Eppson Original Sound, and "Kookie Little Paradise,"by Jo Ann Campbell on ABC -Paramount are onthe way up.

And now a new novelty-"Robot Man," byJamie Horton on Joy-threatens to scare its wayto national attention.

If one adds to these such novelty songs as "IShot Mr. Lee," "Hot Rod Lincoln," "The Twist,"and "Cholly-Oop," it becomes all too clear thatthere is a trend-although this trend seems to havebeen influenced in some cases by midsummermadness.

What all this proves is that the music business, spurred on by the great success of "Alley Oop"and "Mule Skinner Blues," has gone all out toproduce more novelties, some imitative of earlierhits, but many interesting and original numbers intheir own right. Of course, the first great noveltyof the year was Mercury's "Running Bear," byJohnny Preston.

However, a word of caution. There can be toomuch of a good thing, and this is especially trueof so perishable an item as a novelty. Nothing pallsas quickly as the third carbon copy of what must,by definition, be a one-shot success. The wise rec-ord exec will be judicious in his choice of offbeatmaterial, and, above all, will strive to originaterather than to imitate.

Five More Labels HopOn Promo Bandwagon

Five more labels have announced theirnew fall lines as one of the most concen-trated sales campaigns in the trade's his-tory continues. The latest quintet of disk-eries climbing on the season's promo band-wagon are Mercury, Warner Brothers, Lon-don, Decca and Coral.

Warner Brothers is releasing 10 newmono and stereo albums during this monthand September. James B. Conkling, thelabel's president says, "by releasing feweralbums but ones with higher potential, weare giving our distributors a better oppor-tunity to promote and sell each item."Conkling attacked what he termed the"buckshot method" of releasing albumscharging that it tended to glut the market.

LONDON ACCENT ON DEALERS

London's sales campaign this year is at-tuned to the dealers. The label is offeringthem a 100 per cent paid ad program, aseries ()I' speciasl double -pack LP's, a groupof selected premium offers and availabilityof gift wrap material at reduced cost-allthis in addition to the usual dating anddiscount plans.

Each of the double -packs consist of twoalbums, poly -bagged together with frontcovers facing out. Dealers get 11 of thesefor the price of 10, plus the extra 10 percent discount.

The premium offer includes many gam-bits. For instance, the consumer will re-ceive a new American flag for two dollarsplus the coupon enclosed with Mantovani's"American Scene" album. In the ad cam-paign, dealers will receive a sum for localadvertising equivalent to 10 per cent oftheir purchases from the label until Sep-tember 30. The money must be spent ex -

elusively on London product or the linesof any of its subsidiaries. To bolster thisdeal, London will undertake a $150,000advertising program encompassing 23 con-sumer magazines.

MERCURY STRESSES STEREO

Mercury's fall releases include 13 albums,12 of which preem in stereo and monauralsimultaneously. The LParade is led byClyde McPhatter's "May I Sing for You,"the rock 'n roller's first collection of stand-ards. The lone exclusively monaural releaseis "Country Church Time," a C&W albumby George Jones.

Juke Box Industry Asks USFor Favorable Trade Terms

As we go to press, the jukebox industryis scheduled to ask the government to main-tain tariffs on imported juke boxes andpress other countries to lower their tariffson American coin machines.

Hearing the appeal will be the U.S. Com-mittee for Reciprocity Information whichis securing the views of American business-men prior to negotiating new internationaltrade agreements in Geneva this fall.

Represented at the hearing are the Sec -burg Corp., the Wurlitzer Co., Rock-OlaManufacturing Corp., the AMI Division ofthe Automatic Canteen Corp., and UnitedMusic, Inc. The appeal is being made byPerry Patterson of the law firm of Kirkland,Ellis, Hodson, Chaffetz and Masters.

The trade feels that the governmentshould defend its interests since it contendsthat the jukebox industry has never been anoverly prosperous one. Of a dozen com-panies involved in producing coin ma-chines during the past 20 years only 5 havesurvived.

Those remaining in the field argue thattheir survival is due mostly to increasedconcentration on exports, diversification of

'Artist of Week' Promo

Upping Profits for OpsMusic operators in the northeast have re-

ported as much as a 20 per cent increase ingross earnings since subscribing to See -burg's new "artist of the week" promotionwith its accent on 33% singles. This was re-vealed at a meeting of 75 operators at theWaverly Inn in Cheshire, Conn., sponsoredby Atlantic New York Corp., Seeburg dis-tributors for Connecticut.

The operators were addressed by GeneWeiss of Columbia, Joe Mathews of Capi-tol, and two Seeburg officials, Jack Gordon, vice president in charge of phonographsales and Bill Prutting, district manager.

Seeburg is presently engaged in a nation-wide tour selling operators on its new ma-chine which handles all seven-inch records,45's, and monaural and stereo 33%'s. Colum-bia and Capitol are the only labels which

production, and in one case, diversificationthrough absorption by a larger concern ina different area of manufacturing.

American juke box manufacturers areworried over the decline in their exportswhich fell by 1,502 last year down to15,640.

have announced production of 33% singlesin both stereo and monaural.

According to Meyer Parkoff of Atlantic,in addition to the increased gross profitsreported by "two -speed operators," morethan 100 operators in the metropolitan NewYork area have already adopted the newSeeburg jukeboxes which play 33% singlesin addition to 45's.

This may help allay the fears of somemanufacturers who are wary of entering the33 -speed singles field because they doubtthat operators in large numbers will startpurchasing 33% jukeboxes in earnest.

These doubts were reflected by one man-ufacturer who said, "as long as the teen-agers still identify with the 45, and I'm notconvinced the operators are really startingto buy the two -speed jukeboxes, why shouldI rush in and invest extra money in pro-ducing 33% singles at this early date. I canafford to wait a little while longer."

Bill McGuire at Lormar Distributors sayshis firm is usually a barometer on what'sgoing to sell-especially since the bulk ofhis sales are made to juke box operators.Bill says he sold 5000 of Brenda Lee's "I'mSorry" before any other one -stop had

bought any of this smash Decca disc . . .

Now that the WBEE strike has been settleddeejays are back in the groove at the all -

colored station. Larry Wynn and Bill are

swinging again, although Herb Kent leftWBEE to join the WHFC set-up. On Sat-urdays Lon Dyson is handling the deejaychores at WBEE . . Another local stationthat plays a tremendous amount of r and b

NARM Attacks'Jack Robbers

The National Association of Record Mer-chandisers issued another warning to itsmembers to maintain a constant vigil againstthe inroads of "jack robbers"-individualsengaging in unfair business practices whileposing as legitimate rack jobbers. TheNARM warning was accompanied by aletter which John Edgerton, of Record Sup-ply, Inc., in San Francisco has sent to allhis customers.

Edgerton cautions them against the "jackrobber," and proposes that they ask him thefollowing questions if they are ever ap-proached by one: "How often does heservice? What size inventory does he pro-pose? How does he handle special orders? How many titles does he maintain in single45's? What type of fixtures does he recom-mend? How about display materials andtitle cards? What are his other installationswhere his service can be checked? Is hea member of NARM?"

'Edgerton believes that "most 'jack rob-bers' will leave before the list is completed,or they will be at a loss to answer intel-ligently, because they won't know theanswers."

"This is due to the fact that the 'jackrobber' is not a record man," Edgerton says."He's simply out there trying to get thegravy without paying for the meal."

After quoting Edgerton's letter, theNARM statement went on to charge "jackrobbers" with having "no interest in estab-lishing sound and ethical business practicesfor the industry." It recommended thatmembers of NARM distribute literaturesimilar to Edgerton's to their members.

MOA Starts EarlyOn '61 Convention

Hardly three months after the last con-vention held by the Music Operators ofAmerica in Chicago, the organization isgetting off to a headstart on plans for itsparley next year. The convention will beheld at the Deauville Hotel in MiamiBeach, May 15-17.

MOA exec Willie Blatt cited several rea-sons for what he hoped would be "the mostsuccessful meeting ever held under theauspices of the Music Operators of Amer-ica."

First he said that with the tremendousstrides made by the Coin Machine Councilthis year, the industry has a better publicimage, and coin men are now more inter-ested in attending trade parleys.

Also making next year's convention moreattractive, according to Blatt, are the eco-nomical accommidations "which will suiteveryone's pocketbook." "In fact," he said,"rooms and meals will cost less than whatwe have paid for rooms only, at some ofthe hotels in Chicago during past conven-tions." This is the first MOA parley everheld in Miami Beach.

Blatt said that coinmen would have theopportunity of "making this both a busi-ness trip and a vacation for their families."He felt that this "would bring back thespirit and enthusiasm which we enjoyedyears ago."

Blatt emphasized that "all types ofamusement device manufacturers will beinvited, to attract many more of the vend-ing machine people." He said the MOAwas doing this "since we realize that today, music operators throughout the countryhave diversified their businesses to the ex-tent of operating just about everything incoin operated equipment.

FLEXIBLE7T

ROCK-OLA'S "TRI-FONIC" Switch Gives FlexibleAll -Purpose Sound System

Another sure fire profit maker for the operator is the exclu-

sive Rock-Ola three way "Tri-Fonic" switch and dual channel

amplifier which permits instant conversion from monaural to

stereophonic sound. With the Rock-Ola 1960 all-purpose

phonographs you don't have to add auxiliary amplifiers, power

supply packs and the like. You don't even have to plug-in

any wires. With theTEMPO II all you have to do is flip -a -

switch and instantly you can convert to stereo from monaural.

With Rock-Ola you have no cost for expensive conversion

parts because all components for stereo and monaural play are

integrated into one phonograph...only extension speakers are

needed and many locations already have these. Now in 1960

you can buy an all-purposestereophonic phonograph for the

same price you used to pay for just a monaural machine. Stop

in at your local Rock-Oladistributor today and get the full

story of Rock-Ola's profit making full flexibility features.
