A WARM WELCOME FROM OUR CHAIRS

Welcome to our 112th Old Home Day Celebration!

Old Home Day is a community event that takes place every year, hosted by the First Congregational Church of Pelham. Our 112th. Old Home Day will be celebrated this year on Saturday September 15, 2018.

Our theme for 2018 is “Celebrating Pelham’s Athletic Excellence.” We are very pleased to honor area Olympians for the achievements.

New this year- A free parking shuttle bus! Courtesy of Dave Comeau of Keller Williams Realty, a shuttle bus will circulate from the OHD grounds to St. Patricks, the Pelham Library, Pelham Memorial School, and Pelham High School. It will be available from 9 a.m- 5 p.m.

The Pelham Old Home Day Committee would like to thank the many volunteers who make this day a great success through many hours of planning and organizing, phone calls and emails, monthly meetings, and sorting through the many items donated for our auction and white elephant tent. We also thank our sponsors, whose support helps to make this day possible. We’d particularly like to thank the Pelham Hannaford. FLIR Systems and Titus Plomaritis for major support of this year’s Old Home Day. Last but not least, we thank all who attend our Old Home Day celebration, sharing our community spirit while enjoying the company of family, friends, and neighbors.

Come and enjoy all that Old Home Day has to offer. The day begins with a great breakfast in the Church Fellowship Hall and a 5k Road Race organized by The Sean Paradis Memorial Scholarship Fund. In addition, please come and enjoy our Auction, White Elephant Tent, Country Store, Penny Sale, Grand Parade, Kids Games, Quilt Raffle, and Prize Raffle. Shop at our many crafter spaces and get acquainted with the local businesses and nonprofit organizations in attendance. Stop by the Food Tent for refreshment, and enjoy entertainment throughout the day on our stage. We invite you to end your day with a Chicken Wing Dinner served in the church’s fellowship hall and available for take-out.

Welcome Home Everyone!

Tom Seniow, Dan and Marie Murphy

Welcome to the 112th Pelham Old Home Day celebration! As you know, if you are from Pelham, this annual event draws thousands of people to the center of town for a day of fellowship, fun, reunions and memory-making!

As I take my leave to move to Massachusetts (Home), I will share the many memories we have had together since 2007. Maureen and I will hold you all in our thoughts and prayers that this year will bring even more memories of simpler times, simple fun and great food! If you can’t find something you like at Old Home Day, you haven’t looked hard enough! From the White Elephant Treasures, Auction items, Crafters, Vendors, Parade and , of course, Food, you will find something for you here in a simple family-style get together!

In the past year there was some discussion on-line about moving the celebration to a larger area. Because the First Congregational Church of Pelham UCC directs and staffs the entire event, logistically it is impossible to move everything and still offer the same experience. And we believe there is no need to be anything other than what it is right now; “HOME”!

In 1931, then Pastor Rev. Claude Adams wrote in the Old Home Day Booklet these words; “It is expected that in the courses of 200 years (now even more), a family should become somewhat large in numbers and its members should become considerably scattered. But we are not living under the same conditions of our fathers. Travel and communication is much easier today. It was not only a simple task for us to invite you to come to this reunion, it was also comparatively easy for you to come here. We are anxious for your comfort and happiness when you are here…make yourselves at home and expect us to be ready to do anything we can to make this a pleasant day for you.”

The sentiment hasn’t changed! We welcome you home to a simple celebration; as we say, “it is what it is, as crowded as it may be!” And Lord knows, we are looking for simplicity these days. Simple fellowship, simple conversations, simple gifts of laughter and joy!

We will meet again someday as we come back to visit! Thank you all for 11 amazing years together!

WHY ARE THEY SO HAPPY?

Every month, our church has made a commitment to prepare and serve a meal at Lazarus House, an emergency shelter for homeless people in Lawrence. During one of our recent visits to serve a meal, I noticed two women who were well dressed and would fit into any professional office setting and yet here they were in a homeless shelter. I estimate their age to be late 20s. The striking thing about each of these women was that each was caring for a young baby less than a year old. Reminded me of the Joan Baez song “there but for fortune go you or I.” Homelessness is often the result of circumstances that are beyond the control of the individual affected.

You might expect two young mothers living in a homeless shelter to be justifiably grumpy, but you would be wrong. They both had a ready smile and were more than willing to engage Alysa, who was helping serve the meal on that evening, in spirited conversation. They both seemed genuinely happy. To me, this seemed counterintuitive. On the way home, I brought up to Scott Farnsworth my confusion regarding why in the world these two women seemed to be so happy when life seemed to have dealt them such a bad hand. Scott thought about this and replied that perhaps the reason they were so happy was that at Lazarus House, they are given the gift of hope. I think Scott nailed it. Lazarus House is not just a place for people to stay when they have nowhere else to go, but the staff works very hard to provide a path to each guest to move forward and out of their homeless situation. As we leave after cleaning up from the meal that we serve, we often see counselors and other support staff arriving to work with guests on an individual basis. Elsewhere in Lawrence, Lazarus House provides job training so that unemployed or underemployed people can lift themselves out of poverty with meaningful employment. Their programs seem to be effective, because we rarely see the same people when we serve our meals at monthly intervals. Simply put, Lazarus House is providing each of the people that stay in their emergency shelter with hope. Once there is hope, the door is opened for many positive things to happen.

When we share our time and treasures to those in need, we provide people, many of whom we will never know, with hope. Those targeted missions where we offer both hand on and monetary support with answers to the questions that they may have that prevent them from having hope. The question “where is my next meal coming from?” is answered by Lazarus House, Nashua Soup Kitchen, Pelham Food Pantry, our Community Suppers, and Our Churches Wider Mission offerings (among others). The question “how can I establish a living space where I can begin my journey out of poverty or recovery from catastrophic events?” is answered by the Wish Project, our donations to the Upper Room (for young parents), Heifer Project, and disaster relief. I like to think that a primary mission of our church is providing hope to those who need it.

Planting Foundations for Good Decisions

Pelham Community Coalition (PCC) has been working for five years to change the trajectory of substance misuse in Pelham, especially among our youth. PCC has sponsored presentations, events, has sent and offered to send students to a New Hampshire Teen Institute leadership program, pushed for the development of peer mentoring in our schools, and more.

While we have made progress more needs to be done and, with help of you and our community, we can continue to make progress.

Based on a comparison with the biannual Youth Risk Behavior Survey results for 2015 and 2017 there is a significant change in areas of substance abuse for the better. However, in areas of bullying, suicide, sadness and helplessness there is no change and points to a need to expand our focus in these areas as well.

However, we cannot do this without the involvement of you and the community we share.

TOGETHER, ARMED WITH KNOWLEDGE AND AWARENESS, WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

please contact our church at 603-635-7025.

We have 2 more scheduled for this year on Oct 12th and Dec 14th. Please stop by and check it out. We will be posting the schedule for next year on our website (www.uccpelham.org) once it is determined.

In 1836 the Federal Government, under President Andrew Jackson, had a surplus of funds. This surplus money was returned to the states, which, in turn, apportioned it to the towns. Pelham received approximately $3800.00 in surplus federal funds in late 1836 or early 1837.

At a town meeting held on March 14, 1837, the town placed most of this money in the hands of Capt. Edward Wyman to loan out at interest for the benefit of the town. At the same town meeting the town voted to spend some of the money to build a stone bridge across Beaver Brook south of Pelham Center.

Following is an excerpt from the March 14, 1837 Town Meeting where the citizens "Voted to build the bridge across Beaver Brook on the road leading from the meeting house to the house of Moses Bailey - to be done by a suitable arch or arches and to chose David Cutter, Esquire and Jonathan Atwood, Jr. to carry same into effect."

This bridge was built on what is now known as Bridge Street near what was then the home of the Abbott Family. Uriah Abbott, believed to be the first of the Pelham Abbotts, moved to Pelham from Andover, Massachusetts while New Hampshire was still a British colony. Uriah Abbott is listed among the Pelham patriots who fought in the Revolution. Because of its proximity to the Abbott home, Pelham's first stone bridge became known as the "Abbott Bridge," although it was sometimes called the "South Bridge."

Our Parade Marshals Our 2018 Pelham Old Home Day Theme is “Celebrating Pelham’s Excellent Athletics.” We are very pleased to honor the varsity captains and co-captains from Pelham High School’s Athletic teams as our Grand Marshals this year. The Pythons are again enjoying a very successful Fall season. We hope you will cheer on our PHS varsity team captains as they ride by in Charlie Beaulieu’s beautiful convertibles. But more importantly, we hope you will watch them in action and cheer them on in their games, matches, and meets during the school year. Remember Homecoming Weekend is October 12-13. All PHS Varsity Teams will be in action during those two days. We are very proud of our Pelham athletes this Old Home Day! Go Pythons !!!!!! The Pelham Good Neighbor Fund was established in 1969 by Pelham residents who wanted to provide food and financial assistance to their less fortunate neighbors. Since the Fund was established over 2500 residents have received assistance with their heating oil, rent, electricity, transportation and other household expenses. They have two fundraisers a year which include their Annual Golf Tournament in August and their Annual Christmas Drive in December. Every December the committee conducts a weekend drive at the Pelham Plaza for food and money. Various organizations volunteer their time on the weekend to collect the donations. In addition, there are donations of food and money from individuals, businesses and charitable organizations, families, schools and churches.

• During 2016 the Fund was able to take care of 23 families and individual residents in Pelham, contributing $28,688 throughout the year for their household expenses including rent, heat, electricity and food.

• During the Christmas season, toys, clothing and food were provided to 24 families including 49 children.

• We had a lot of help along the way including: o Our 27th Annual Sponsor-A-Child program where residents in

town purchase gifts for the children and families for Christmas.

o Our 47th Annual Christmas Drive where volunteers from the various organizations including: The American Legion Post 100, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10722, St. Patrick Knights of Columbus Council 6902, the Pelham Firefighters Association and the Cub Scouts Pack 25 collected food and cash donations at the Pelham Plaza.

• We held our 23nd Annual Golf Tournament and our 47th. Annual Christmas Drive.

These donations and our fundraisers have made it possible to provide financial assistance to our Pelham residents and support a men’s and women’s shelter. Additionally, over the past fifteen years, we have awarded 23 scholarships totaling $57,500 in scholarship funds. The fifteen dedicated and committed volunteers of the Pelham Good Neighbor Fund Committee would like to thank you for your support.

Welcome to our 112th Pelham Old Home Day celebration. This is the premier event for Pelham and a demonstration that we have much in common as a giving and caring community. We look forward to you joining us. Your support and that of our sponsors and advertisers as well as our dedicated volunteers allows us to continue bringing this event to you. The benefits of Old Home Day carry throughout the year as the net proceeds are used to provide support to local and area charities.

The program of events is in the front of the book and our list of raffle prizes in the back of the book. We are again offering two raffles this year. One will be for a uniquely designed quilt and the other will be for a chance to win one of our ## great prizes. We will begin the day with breakfast (eggs, pancakes and sausage) and close out the day with our traditional supper meal (chicken wings and desserts), with the option of a sit- down meal or takeout.

Please join us Saturday, September 15th as we celebrate this unique event. Meet up with old friends or make new ones. Enjoy the entertainment, games for kids, the food tent and chicken barbecue dinner. Find bargains at the white elephant tables, the auction or the crafters booths. See you there.
