NATIONAL JOHNNY APPLESEED DAY – MARCH 11March 11th – On National

Johnny Appleseed Day, we remember a man

who made apple (and pear) trees bloom across the nation. The day celebrates a kindly legend who lived by sage teachings and labored to bring the shade of fruit trees across much of the United States.

He was born John Chapman on September 26, 1774, in Leominster, Massachusetts, to Nathaniel and Elizabeth Simons Chapman. Not much is known about his early life other than his mother died when he was two. His father packed up Johnny and his sister (an infant brother had died the previous year) and moved to Springfield, Massachusetts. His father served as a Minuteman and fought at Bunker Hill.

Then in 1797, Chapman shows up in northwestern Pennsylvania, propagating his apple seeds. He worked his way steadily into the frontier of West

Virginia, Ohio, and Indiana. Eventually, Chapman became known as Johnny Appleseed and worked his way as far west as Illinois and Iowa and as far north as Michigan and Wisconsin.

In his wake, he left orchards and the teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg, a Swedish spiritual leader. Appleseed would buy his books with whatever payment he might receive for his endeavors. In turn, Johnny would give the books away as he traveled and planted.

Mostly, though, he planted his seeds and seedlings for free along with his wisdom, his broad-brimmed pasteboard hat keeping the sun from his eyes as he went. Often shoeless, he traveled mostly by foot and sometimes by horseback or canoe. His appearance was nearly as noteworthy as his accomplishments, but so was his kindness. Farmers and frontier folk always found a place at

the table if Johnny Appleseed came visiting. There are many stories told that the man would travel many miles to nurse an ailing orchard when word would reach him of its poor condition. Bringing the trees back to health would be his chief endeavor while dispersing wisdom, care, and kindness as he did.

Across the Midwest, landmarks pepper the countryside honoring the man that brought fruit to the frontier. Warren County, Pennsylvania, lays claim to Johnny Appleseed’s first tree nursery. Mansfield, Ohio, honors the man with a monument in South Park. The last known Chapman tree still lives! In rural Ashland County, Ohio, the tree struggles to survive, but half of it still manages to bloom in the spring.

In his hometown of Springfield, Massachusetts, there is an entire park named after the man who nurtured the land and made apple

trees bloom across a young nation. Two dates celebrate Johnny

Appleseed Day, either March 11th or September 26th. The September date is Appleseed’s acknowledged birth date. However, many people across the country prefer the March date due to the planting season. While some vagueness surrounds Appleseed’s death and burial, he became ill in early March and passed soon after. In Fort Wayne, Indiana, in Johnny Appleseed Park, a grave marks the spot where the legendary sower of apple seeds rests. There are so many ways to celebrate the day! You can begin by reading any one of the many books written about Johnny Appleseed. Some of them are mere folklore but others delve into the man himself. Other ways to celebrate the day include: Visiting some of the landmarks where Johnny Appleseed once lived and worked.

Plant a fruit tree. Visit your

local orchard to learn more about the trees that live and thrive in your area. Sometimes you will need two in order for them to bear fruit, so be sure you ask.

Eat your favorite tree fruit. It doesn’t have to be an apple. Johnny Appleseed planted several varieties of fruit trees. While you can find apples in March, they aren’t in season.

Tree fruits that are in season

include avocados, kumquats, lemons, limes, oranges, mandarins, and pomelos. Only a few of these grow in the United States. Do you know which ones?

While our research did not uncover the founder of this day, we did crisscross a lot of applesauce, cider, and pies.

There’s a story from the early days of America, discussing this near-mythical figure that traveled

the wilds of America spreading apple seeds everywhere he went. He was known and lauded for his kind, generous ways, and the importance he placed on the apples. To this day he is depicted in stories and song as the man who made apples an American institution and is one of the most beloved characters in its mythology and history. To understand the importance of Johnny Appleseed Day, we first need to discuss who Johnny Appleseed was. The name sounds like something from a nursery rhyme or a children’s television show. However, Johnny Appleseed was an American pioneer nurseryman who ensured that large parts of the United States were introduced to apple trees. His generous and kind ways resulted in him being an American legend while he was still alive.

He became a symbol of the importance of apples, as well as being a key leader in conservation.

Mohindra said the resolution was brought with the permission of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh."This house expresses concern on the current role of the central agencies such as CBI, ED which have been set up to ensure transparency in public life. "Unfortunately, there have been apparent instances

wherein these agencies have been used to harass innocent people including farmers, artists and politically elected representatives and even some government officials," said Mohindra. "During the ongoing session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, a member of this House has been compelled to remain absent from participating in the proceedings of the House and discharge his constitutional obligations as an elected representative of his constituency due to an unwarranted and unconstitutional interference by the ED which has been noticed and condemned by the August house unanimously," he said.

court stays operation of search warrant against advocate Mehmood PrachaNew DelhI, MArch 11 (PTI)

A Delhi court on Wednesday stayed the operation of search warrants issued against advocate Mehmood Pracha, who is representing some of the accused in the cases related to the riots that took place in the national capital last year.

Pracha's office was raided by the Delhi Police on Tuesday in connection with an FIR alleging that the advocate tutored a witness to initiate a false riots case. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Pankaj Sharma, who passed the directions on an application filed by Pracha, said till the pendency of this application, the search warrants issued against the applicant is stayed.

The court reserved its order for March 12 on the advocate's plea which has also sought a direction to the police to retrieve only the relevant information from his hard disk in the presence of a Magistrate.

Pracha said that a soft copy of the materials was as good as a hard copy under the Information Technology Act."They want to threaten my clients. That's their purpose. In the main Delhi riots cases, they say soft copy is equal to hard copy and we would not give hard copy of charge sheet. Here they don't

want soft copy, he said.During the course of

arguments, the advocate also argued that it was clear from the video of the riots in question that his complaint was not false."Larger issues are involved. Entire judicial system is involved. I'm willing to sacrifice myself to save the Constitution. Please protect my clients, Constitution and Evidence Act, he added.Delhi police opposed Pracha's plea, saying that seizing the original hard disk was essential as it ought to be sent to a forensic science laboratory for examination and that a mirror hard disk can be put back into his computer. The application said that the purpose of obtaining a search warrant was to yet again threaten, intimidate and frighten him. Pracha's office was earlier raided by the Delhi Police on December 24, 2020. The Police had claimed that it was searching for "incriminating documents" and meta data of the outbox of the official email id of his firm.

j-K wine traders raise concerns over draft excise policy

jAMMU, MArch 11 (PTI)

A day after Jammu and Kashmir administration released the draft excise policy for 2021-22, Jammu Wine Traders Association (JWTA) on Wednesday raised concerns over the proposal to allot liquor vends through the e-auction process.

The association said the traders may lose their livelihood if not being able to compete in the e-auction process.

The policy, which was for the first time placed in the public domain before its issuance, envisages allotment of liquor shops to the residents of the Union Territory through e-auction.

Any person who is eligible for grant of license as per the provisions of the excise act and rules will be eligible for participation in the e-auction process.

"We reject this policy which is meant for rich persons alone. None of us can afford to compete in the e-auction as we are small traders who earn their livelihood from this business for decades," JWTA president Charanjeet Singh told reporters here. Demanding continuation of the existing policy, he said 30,000 families are directly or indirectly involved in

earning their livelihood from this business and most of the present licensees are widows, senior citizens and unemployed youth who have no other source of income.

As per the draft policy, the allotment of liquor vends through e-auction would be in a completely open and transparent manner in the same area where liquor shops already exist.

"The vends shall be allotted for a period of one year as per the provisions of the J&K Excise Act and Rules. The total number of shops to be allotted would be the same as existing at present and there would be no increase in the number of vends to be auctioned," it said, adding only a single outlet will be allotted to one person. "The rich people can bid a huge amount of money, which is required to run this business as per new draft policy, thus snatching livelihood from small

traders and creating a liquor mafia," Singh said. Seeking the intervention of Union Minister Jitendra Singh and Lt Governor Manoj Sinha in addressing their concerns, the JWTA president said the government can issue new licenses in unserved and underserved areas while safeguarding their interests.

He said the liquor traders are working as revenue collecting agents of the government and fully abide by the rules and regulations.

"We started contributing Rs 2,500 monthly towards Social Responsibility Corpus fund after submitting a proposal to the then J&K government in 2015-16 and recommended the transfer of an amount of Rs three crore to J&K relief fund from it in March last year after realising the gravity of coronavirus pandemic," he said, adding they have also donated 13 ambulances and relief items over the years.

ec urged to ban announcement on freebieserODe, MAr 11:

TN Toddy Movement president lawyer C Nallasamy appealed to the EC to ban announcements on freebies, made by political parties, at the time of election.

He said that once the DMK chief MK Stalin announced to offer Rs 1000 to all family heads-women-after coming to power, the CM Edapadi K Palanisamy vied with him by announcing Rs 1500 per head and 6 LPG refills free of cost to each family. Meanwhile, MNM chief Kamal Hassan, who is also in the CM candidate race, ridiculed them by stating that he alone announced distribution of money to the homemakers. All kind of announcements related to freebies at the time of election is an insult to the self-esteem of the people. So, they should be banned.

The state was already suffering with over Rs 5.5 lakh crore debt and nearly one fourth of the state revenue go for remitting interest alone for such loan. So, how can the parties mobilize fund for

giving new kind of freebies, he asked. They would slap more tax on the people or hike the tax on liquor, petrol and diesel to mobilize fund for giving new freebies or obtain more loan to meet the expenditure, which could further endanger the state’s economy, he feared.

BAN ON CONTESTS IN 2 SEGMENTS: He said that after his movement fielded over 1000 candidates in the Modakurichi segment in 1996 poll, the EC brought some changes in the election process, which reduced its overall expenditure by Rs 300 crore in subsequent elections.

But, even now, some leaders contest in 2 segments and resign from one segment after winning both. So, the EC has to conduct by election again in that segment by spending huge money. Instead, the leaders who resign from the segment should be asked to bear the cost of holding byelection. It would help check contesting in 2 segments by some leaders and wastage of taxpayers money, he felt.

excavation work resumed at Kodumanal erODe MAr 11:

Archaeological Survey of Tamil Nadu resumed excavation work at Kodumanal near Chennimalai in Erode district. There is evidence that those who lived there about 2,300 years ago excelled in business and industry. Although excavations have been carried out here for many years, the University of Tanjore and the University of Pondicherry have been conducting excavations since 1981. Thereafter, on behalf of the Tamil Nadu Archaeological Survey, a team led by its Project Director J. Ranjith carried out the 8th excavation work, beginning in May 2020, for 6 months. At that time, copper and silver coins,

tools, Brahmi characters and artefacts were found in the area where the workshops were located.

Tombstones, numerous earthenware pots, and human bones have also been found.

In this context, excavations are being carried out again in Kodumanal under the direction of J. Ranjith, Project Director, Archaeological Survey of Tamil Nadu. Excavations last year uncovered a canal that was designed to drain water from factories. It was thought that the canal may have gone as far as the Noyal River. However, no further study was conducted at that time as the period for research work was over. At present, excavations of 10 m long and 10 m wide pits have been uncovered at 2 sites at depths of 30 cm with finding of various types of stone dating back to 2300 years, its raw materials, glass pieces, conical bracelets, earthenware, and signs of

drainage. Also, a spoon-shaped object about 12 cm in length has been found.

Archaeologists are still struggling to gather enough evidence before reaching the final conclusions about the location of the site.

Studies so far have found workshops and cemeteries on privately owned land.

The current excavation is taking place in the northern part of the Noyal River, which is owned by the Public Works Department.

An ongoing study suggests that more antiquities are likely to be available.

The excavation is expected to last until September.

Study reveals majority women do not know about cervical cancererODe, MArch 11

An UGC sponsored research study on cervical cancer, conducted by the Kongu Arts and Science College Bio-Chemistry Department HoD Dr AK Vidya, suggested to the Centre and State government to arrange compulsory medical check up for all women in the nation at least once in 2 years to detect cervical cancer as many of them did not know about the seriousness of the disease..

Talking to Afternoon, she said that the UGC offered Rs 3.22 lakh for the study which covered various aspects of the disease for more than 1 year and the study was sent to the UGC. Shockingly, the study revealed that majority women, even educated, did not know about the seriousness of the disease. Around 95 percent of the disease is caused by the Human papillomaviruses (HPVs 16 and 18) and it could spread from men’s body to women and genetic problem. Personal unhygienic condition, early marriage, multiple deliveries, tobacco products usage etc are other reasons. As per the 2008 report, over 1.75 lakh women in

the nation suffered with the disease every year and 73000 died every year. The number would be more now due to rise in population. Of the total number of cases, 27 percent were cervical cancer. In fact, cervical cancer cases are much high all over the nation than any other cancer.

Though a vaccine is available and could be applied from 13 to 20 years of age (before marriage), many are not aware of it. Many could not know that they are afflicted with the disease because there would be no symptom of it. So, only at the 3rd stage, when the survival rate is much low, many know about the problem. But, if one undergoes pap smear test once in 2 years, after marriage, she could know the problem at the initial stage itself and start getting

treatment. The tests are done free of cost in the PHCs itself, but many due to social stigma, shyness, hesitation, averts such test. So, the WHO and gynecologists suggested that the tests could be done without informing the women coming for various other diseases for treatment. If the test indicates cancer, then, treatment can be started.

One can undergo HPV test, the next stage of testing, after the age of 30-40 which could reveal the disease in clear cut way and help one to get due remedy. Then, the test could be conducted through colposcopy which could confirm the disease if the person is afflicted with it. In the I and II phase, the cancer could be treated as it could not spread to other parts of body. But, in III phase, it could spread to other organs also. So, it is difficult to get cured. At the initial stage itself, the women should understand the problem by undergoing pap smear test which is a simple and cost effective process. Hence, the Government should create more awareness on the issue among the women all over the nation to save many lives, she concluded.

women's cricket: confident India look to carry on momentum in 3rd ODI against South AfricalUcKNOw, MArch 11 (PTI)

Their confidence high after a comprehensive series-levelling win, the Indian women's cricket team would look to gain the upper-hand when it takes on South Africa in the third ODI of the ongoing five-match series here on Friday. After losing the series-opener by eight wickets, Indian women crushed South Africa by nine wickets to draw parity. And come Friday, the Mithali Raj-led side would look to carry on the momentum with yet another clinical display. The Indian bowlers led the way in the second match after an ordinary outing in the opener to bowl out South Africa women for a below-par 157. Veteran pacer Jhulan Goswami used her vast experience to great effect and picked up four African wickets. "It was pretty challenging because I was

coming back after a year, and playing a competitive side like South Africa. I was just trying to hit the ball on the right areas," Goswami had said of her performance. She was ably supported by left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad (3/37) and Mansi Joshi (2/23) as India bowled out South Africa in 41 overs.

Then Smriti Mandhana (80 off 64 balls) and Punam Raut (62 off 89) shared an unbeaten 138-run partnership for the second wicket as

Indian women comfortably chased down the target in 28.4 overs. The rustiness that was apparent in the series-opener was shaken off in the second outing by the hosts, who seem to have got back their rhythm given the near-perfect performance to outwit the visitors.

Goswami's form will be crucial to India's chances. For South Africa, batting efforts skipper Sane Luus (36) and Lara Goodall (49) were a positive.

Their 60-run third wicket stand saved the visiting scorecard from being a complete disaster. However, the Indian troika of Jemimah Rodrigues, Mandhana and Raut would be a tough challenge for the the touring bowlers. Mandhana was at her attacking best as she hit 10 boundaries and three sixes during her whirlwind knock, while Raut struck eight fours.

But the Indians can't afford to take South Africa women lightly as they are expected to bounce back hard after the demoralising defeat.Teams (from): India women: Mithali Raj (captain), Smriti Mandhana,

'gift of life': gavaskar recalls how Sobers helped him "keep place in side"NAVI MUMbAI, MArch 11 (PTI)

As Indian cricket celebrates 50 years of his iconic Test debut, Sunil Gavaskar on Wednesday said he wouldn't have lasted this long had it not been for a couple of "lives" given by none other than the great Sir Garfield Sobers.

Gavaskar was speaking at a 'Gift of Life' ceremony after 'Rotary Club of Bombay Airport', led by Nitin Mehta, facilitated congenital heart surgeries of around 150 children at the 'Shri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital'. "In my first Test match that I was playing, I was batting on 12 and a drive outside the off-stump and the catch went to the greatest cricketer...Garfield Sobers, it went

straight to him and it poked out of his hands, I was on only 12, so I got a gift of cricketing life there," the 71-year-old said here.

"That allowed me to score a half-century and keep my place in the team for the next Test," he recalled.

The legendary batsman made his Test debut on March 6, 1971 against the West Indies, a series which India won. He then went on to become the first batsman

to score 10,000 Test runs. "In the next Test also, when I was batting on 6, I slashed at the ball outside the off-stump, again it went to Sir Garfield Sobers, this time of course the ball went a lot quicker, he probably didn't see it in the background.

"The ball sometimes gets lost in the background and it hit him in the chest and by the time he would recover, the ball again dropped to the ground and I got my first Test century. "It helped me to keep my career going for 16-17 years for the Indian team. But for those two lives, I wouldn't be here," he said and also explained how cricket is a team game," recalled the 'Little Master', who has amassed 10,122 runs from 125 Tests.

Thomas bach re-elected as IOc president until 2025geNeVA, MArch 11

Thomas Bach was re-elected as president of the International Olympic Committee on Wednesday for a final four-year term with his immediate focus on this year's delayed Tokyo Games.

The German lawyer was unopposed and won the vote 93-1, with four members abstaining, following an opening eight-year mandate dominated by the Russian doping scandal and the first Olympics to be postponed in peacetime. "Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart for this overwhelming vote of confidence and trust," Bach said during an online meeting of IOC members. Bach said Tokyo was "the best prepared Olympic city ever" and reiterated the games would open on July 23 despite restrictions imposed during the COVID-19

pandemic. "The question is not whether, the question is how these Olympic Games will take place," he said.

Because of the pandemic, Bach spoke to a wall of screens connecting members online instead of at a meeting scheduled for June in Athens.

Uncertainty in the past year extended a theme of Bach's presidency turmoil for games organizers and financial stability for the IOC

in Switzerland. Bach first presided over the 2014 Sochi Games, which were tainted by Russia's state-backed doping program.

It was an "unprecedented attack on the integrity of the Olympic Games," Bach said Wednesday. Russian teams and athletes have been barred from competing under their nation's name or flag in Tokyo as the latest punishment in fallout from the scandal.

Southampton to host wTc final between India and New zealand, limited fans a possibility: IccDUbAI, MArch 11 (PTI)

The International Cricket Council on Wednesday formally announced that Southampton will host the inaugural World Test Championship final between India and New Zealand in June and a limited number of fans could be allowed if the easing of lockdown in the UK continues.

The game will be played inside a bio-secure bubble at the Hampshire Bowl in Southampton from June 18-22.

The venue was confirmed to PTI on Monday by BCCI President Sourav Ganguly. "Should the UK government's phased easing of COVID-19 lockdown measures proceed as planned, it is anticipated that a limited number of fans will be allowed into the Hampshire

Bowl to watch the final," the ICC statement read. Initially, the final was supposed to be held at the Lord's but the ICC Board and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) decided to change the venue to ensure that the fixture could be staged safely with the potential impact of COVID-19 minimised for all involved.

"In selecting the Hampshire Bowl, the ICC drew on ECB's experience of delivering a full summer of bio-safe international cricket

in 2020," the ICC said. "The venue provides

world-class playing and training facilities, giving both teams the best possible environment in which to prepare." New Zealand were the first team to qualify for the final and they were joined by India following their 3-1 series win over England which concluded on Saturday.

"I am sure the finale of the ICC World Test Championship will be a wonderful occasion."

A year on, whO still struggling to manage pandemic responsegeNeVA, MArch 11

When the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus a pandemic one year ago Thursday, it did so only after weeks of resisting the term and maintaining that the highly infectious virus could still be stopped.

A year later, the U.N. agency is still struggling to keep on top of the evolving science of COVID-19, to persuade countries to abandon their nationalistic tendencies and help get vaccines where they're needed most.

The agency made some costly missteps along the way: It advised people against wearing masks for months and asserted that COVID-19 wasn't widely spread in the air. It also declined to publicly call out countries particularly China for mistakes that senior WHO officials grumbled about privately.

That created some tricky politics that challenged WHO's credibility and wedged it between two world powers, setting off vociferous Trump administration criticism that the agency is only now emerging from.

President Joe Biden's support for WHO may provide some much-needed

breathing space, but the organisation still faces a monumental task ahead as it tries to project some moral authority amid a universal scramble for vaccines that is leaving billions of people unprotected.

WHO has been a bit behind, being cautious rather than precautionary, said Gian Luca Burci, a former WHO legal counsel now at Geneva's Graduate Institute.

At times of panic, of a crisis and so on, maybe being more out on a limb taking a risk would have been better. WHO waved its first big warning flag on January 30, 2020, by calling the outbreak an international health emergency. But many countries ignored or overlooked the warning.

Only when WHO

Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declared a pandemic six weeks later, on March 11, 2020, did most governments take action, experts said. By then, it was too late, and the virus had reached every continent except Antarctica. A year later, WHO still appears hamstrung. A WHO-led team that traveled to China in January to investigate the origins of COVID-19 was criticised for failing to dismiss China's fringe theory that the virus might be spread via tainted frozen seafood. That came after WHO repeatedly lauded China last year for its speedy, transparent response even though recordings of private meetings obtained by reports showed that top officials were frustrated at the country's lack of cooperation. Everybody

has been wondering why WHO was so praising of China back in January" 2020, Burci said, adding that the praise has come back to haunt WHO big-time.

Some experts say WHO's blunders came at a high price, and it remains too reliant on iron-clad science instead of taking calculated risks to keep people safer whether on strategies like mask-wearing or whether COVID-19 is often spread through the air. Without a doubt, WHO's failure to endorse masks earlier cost lives, said Dr. Trish Greenhalgh, a professor of primary care health sciences at Oxford University who sits on several WHO expert committees.

Not until June did WHO advise people to regularly wear masks, long after other health agencies and numerous countries did so.

Greenhalgh said she was less interested in asking WHO to atone for past errors than revising its policies going forward. In October, she wrote to the head of a key WHO committee on infection control, raising concerns about the lack of expertise among some members. She never received a response.

UK variant of coronavirus linked to significantly higher death rate, says studylONDON, MArch 11 (PTI)

The highly infectious variant of the novel coronavirus which swept across the UK last year before spreading worldwide, could be 30 to 100 per cent deadlier than previous versions of the virus, according to a new study.

The research, published in the British Medical Journal on Wednesday, noted that this variant, B.1.1.7, is linked to a significantly higher mortality rate amongst adults diagnosed in the community compared to previously circulating strains. In the study, epidemiologists from the Universities of Exeter and Bristol in the UK, compared death rates among people infected with the new variant and those infected with other strains. They found that the new variant led to 227 deaths in a sample of 54,906 patients compared to 141 amongst the same number of closely matched patients who had the previous strains. "In

the community, death from COVID-19 is still a rare event, but the B.1.1.7 variant raises the risk. Coupled with its ability to spread rapidly this makes B.1.1.7 a threat that should be taken seriously," said Robert Challen, lead author of the study from the University of Exeter. Since this variant was first detected in the UK in September 2020, it has been proven to be significantly quicker and easier to spread, with more people, who would have previously been considered low risk, hospitalised because

of it. Assessing data from over 54,609 matched pairs of patients of all age-groups and demographics, and differing only in strain detected, the researchers found that there were 227 deaths attributed to the new strain, compared to 141 attributable to earlier strains. "We focussed our analysis on cases that occurred between November 2020 and January 2021, when both the old variants and the new variant were present in the UK," said Leon Danon, senior author of the study from the University of Bristol.

china for decades waged campaign to destroy Tibet's proud culture, history: PelosiwAShINgTON, MArch 11 (PTI)

China for decades has waged a campaign to destroy Tibet's proud culture and history, House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi has alleged, asserting that the US will continue to stand with the Tibetan people and honour those who sacrificed all for their rights and freedom. Speaking on the occasion of the 62nd anniversary

of Tibetan Uprising Day on Wednesday against the Chinese occupation of the remote Himalayan region, Pelosi said, Sixty-two years ago, brave Tibetans rose up against the Chinese invasion to protect their way of life and culture. Today, we continue to stand with the Tibetan people and honour those who sacrificed all for their rights and freedom.

Tibetan men, women and children want simply to

practice their faith, speak their language and celebrate their culture free from violence and intimidation. Yet, Beijing for decades has waged a campaign to destroy Tibet's proud culture and history, which remains a clarion call for action to freedom-loving people worldwide, the top Democrat said.

The Dalai Lama, Tibet's exiled spiritual leader has been demanding meaningful autonomy for Tibetans.

resolutions introduced in US Senate to condemn china's actions in South china Sea, trade practiceswAShINgTON, MArch 11 (PTI)

Influential US Senators have introduced a slew of resolutions in the Senate, condemning China's rising actions to militarise the South China Sea and also to tackle Beijing's economic practices that distort global markets and hurt the American businesses.

Introduced by Senators Rick Scott, Josh Hawley, Dan Sullivan, Thom Tillis and Roger Wicker on Wednesday, the first resolution applauded the American Navy and Coast Guard for their efforts to ensure freedom of navigation operations and send a clear

message that the US will not tolerate Communist China's extension of power in waters beyond its legitimate territorial sea boundaries.

The Communist Party of China, led by Chinese President Xi Jinping, continues to militarise the South China Sea and is eager to expand its territorial claims in the region, Scott said during the introduction of the resolution.

This aggressive and unlawful action cannot be tolerated. I'm proud to lead my colleagues today in a resolution to applaud the hardworking men and

women of the US Navy and Coast Guard for working to defend our freedoms, and to send a clear message to General Secretary Xi that his aggression cannot continue, he said.

Sullivan alleged that in recent years, China has ramped up its aggressive actions against neighbouring peaceful nations both to expand its influence and subvert the rule of law in the South China Sea.

The alarming, belligerent behaviour of Xi Jinping cannot continue. This resolution commends the courageous Coast Guard

and Navy service members who continue to promote international order in the region and sends a strong message to the Chinese Communist Party that hostility toward our allies will not be tolerated, he said.

According to Tillis, the brave men and women of US Armed Forces deployed in the Indo-Pacific play a critical role in protecting access to vital commercial corridors like the South China Sea.

China is engaged in hotly contested territorial disputes in both the South China Sea and the East China Sea. Beijing has built up

and militarised many of the islands and reefs it controls in the region.

Both maritime areas are stated to be rich in minerals, oil and other natural resources and are also vital to global trade.

China's claims to sovereignty over the South China Sea are unfounded and threaten the international order. The US must hold Beijing accountable for its unauthorised expansions, and I applaud the US Navy and Coast Guard for working to maintain the balance of power in the Pacific region, Wicker said.

Day after lodging complaint about minor daughter’s rape, UP man dies in ‘accident’lUcKNOw,MArch. 11

The father of a minor girl, who was allegedly gangraped by four men in UP’s Kanpur district, was killed after he was hit by an unidentified truck on Wednesday.

Expressing doubts about the accident, which came a day after they lodged a complaint about the rape, the girl’s family said the rape accused could be behind it.

They pointed out that the father of one of the accused is a police official.

The prime accused in the rape case, Golu Yadav, son of a police sub-inspector posted in Kannauj, was arrested earlier and efforts were underway to nab his brother Saurabh and friend Deepu, Kanpur Deputy IG Preetinder Singh said.

While the medical examination of the rape survivor was going on at the community health centre (CHC) in Ghatampur, her father went out for a cup of tea and was hit by a truck, Singh said.

The minor's father was

taken to the Lala Lajpat Rai (LLR) Hospital, where he succumbed to the injuries.

Superintendent of Police (Rural) Brajesh Srivastava said an FIR was registered on charges of murder against Devendra Yadav, the father of the accused.

“The accident took place when the medical examination of the victim was underway and the father stepped out for a cup of tea. After some time, we got to know that he was hit by a truck. He was immediately taken to a Kanpur hospital, but was declared brought dead. We have filed an accident case and are probing,” said Kanpur DIG Preetinder Singh.

The number of people infected by the coronavirus in Tamil Nadu has increased to 8,25,967. The number of deaths so far is 12,504 while the

number of recoveries is 8,36,473. As of now, 3,990 people are under COVID 19 treatment. The number of cases in Chennai is 2,36,072. Due to the spread of the virus, the lockdown in the state has been extended till March 31 with certain relaxations. It cannot be denied that the relaxations brought forth by the government are taken for granted by the public. The governments have made it mandatory for us to use masks and follow social distancing. But thinking that the spread of the virus has gone down, people have gradually reduced the usage of masks and social distancing. Earlier the government and the health department have made it compulsory that a fine will be imposed for those who do not wear masks. But recently nobody is being penalised for not wearing masks. Therefore the people became careless. This carelessness is likely to invoke the danger of a second wave of the COVID spread. It might also perhaps lead to a state where it might turn into a familial spread. Especially in metro cities like Chennai, it has now become a familial spread. To avoid the further expansion of the COVID spread, strict restrictions have to be imposed on the relaxed lockdown. Despite vaccination, to control the spread of the coronavirus, people have to be insisted to keep their surroundings clean, wear masks and follow social distancing. There is no harm even if a fine is levied for those who do not follow the rules. Only then the people could be brought under control and the corona could be eradicated.

The public has to be brought under control
