Workshops

Collecting Women’s History Tracy Weller, Women’s Library Using a selection of objects from The Women's Library collection we will investigate how artefacts tell the story of the campaign for women's suffrage. Students will have the chance to look at some original artefacts drawn from The Women's Library handling collection.

Sports: Play Fair Nadia Idle and Murray Worthy, War on Want This workshop will involve a series of fun activities to explore where Olympic brand sports gear is made. Who makes the clothes and shoes that athletes wear? Where do they live? What are the conditions like? Can we help improve their lives? And why should young people in London care?

HIV and AIDS Rachel Edwards, Dance4Life Dance4life will be running a one hour workshop addressing HIV and AIDS. Our peer educators will lead you through transmission, protection and taking action through dance and music, and show you how you can really push back the spread of HIV and AIDS.

Careful Beauty Kate Metcalf and Julia Minnear, Women’s Environmental Network Find out what is in your favourite cosmetics and toiletries. Go on a toxic tour of your bathroom cabinet. Find out about alternatives and how to make your own skincare products.

Art of Asking Kate Massey-Chase, Three Faiths Forum Students explore how to ask good questions about faiths and beliefs. Common assumptions and stereotypes are dispelled and real-life student questions are analysed

Who am I? Fatima Begum and Daniel Pasha, Brit Bangla This workshop will look at what it means to be British. What role does race, religion, ethnicity and culture play in shaping one's identity? Do we still have a British identity? Do we still hold on to our roots or has culture been eroded by nationality and patriotism? Does a dual identity still exist?

Politics in Action New Turn There is a serious issue regarding political engagement and education amongst young people. New Turn exists in order to not only try and tackle political apathy but also what in many cases is a lack of opportunity.

The workshop will focus on the importance of political engagement through introducing an innovate gateway for bringing politicians, policy makers and ultimately wider politics to a grass-roots level.

Beyond British Borders Sakib Ershad, European Parliament This workshop will be looking at how European Parliament works and why we should take more of an interest in it. Is Britain's future really tied up in Europe and if so why is there so much negativity around it? The workshop will engage in the ongoing debate between Euro-sceptics and pro-unionists.

Young Activist Workshop Zeenat Islam, YOU*th Inspire Iraq war, racism, the financial crisis, terrorism, Guantanamo bay, famine, the occupation of Palestine, unemployment, discrimination… and the list goes on. Used to seeing these words splashed across the media and not really sure what they mean? Frustrated at things you see going on in the world and want to know how you can contribute to making things better?

Then the “YOU*th Inspire’s Young Activist Workshop” is perfect for you. This workshop will provide an interactive forum containing videos, ethical dilemmas, debates and other practical activities allowing you to share your views on what you think is wrong with the world and better still, how young people can be proactive in contributing towards positive change.

YOU*th Inspire believes that YOU are the future. So join us for this workshop and learn to be the change you want to see in the world.

Power of Beauty David Neita This workshop will examine concepts of beauty and explore self definitions and examine the impact of appreciating ones own beauty and the beauty of others. It will also look at diversity and the value of difference as it relates to the current credit crunch.

Admania Otesha Project Where would Coca Cola or McDonalds be today without advertising? Advertising is a powerful form of communication that strongly influences our daily lives and things we buy. Understanding what is fact and what is fiction on billboards and bus stops, in magazines and on television is important in making informed choices. In the Admania workshop, participants explore the extent to which individuals are affected by advertising, learn about strategies used by companies to sell products, and uncover facts about products that consumers aren’t often told. Through an interactive quiz, discussions, uncovering real facts behind the ads and creating their own spoof ads, participants will be well equipped to make informed decisions as they venture out into a well marketed world.

Israel and Palestine - both sides of an argument Dan Judelson,, Jews for justice for Palestine Life for Palestinians under occupation in the West Bank and the open air prison of the Gaza Strip is hard, even unbearable. For decade after decade, Palestinians have lived with their land being steadily encroached upon since Zionist immigration began in the late 19th century. The peace process has promised much, but delivered nothing. Zionism is the national liberation movement of the Jews, a people who have been subjected to prejudice for thousands of years and who live in fear of their neighbours who repeatedly rejected any recognition of Israel, even though it was brought into existence by the international law - the United Nations.

How can the national rights of both Israelis and Palestinians be reconciled? This workshop will look at the competing claims and examine some of the steps required if a just outcome is to be achieved
