MEET THE CU COACHING STAFF…

HEAD COACH TIM PLACE

Tim Place will enter his fifth season at the helm of the Hawks football program. Place led his 2011 squad to a 3-7

overall record, 2-5 CIAA record, and a 1-4 Northern Division record. Place has accumulated a 10-30 overall record in

four seasons at Chowan. Last year he helped produce Robert Holland, who was named to the All-NCCAA First Team

on offense. Under Place, Tony Goodman was named to the CIAA All-Conference Second Team in 2010. Holland,

Goodman, and Anthony Hooks were also named to the All-NCCAA Football Team last year.

Place, who stepped down as the head coach at Urbana University (OH) to accept the position at Chowan five years

ago, has a vast and diverse football coaching background. Most recently he served as the head coach at Urbana

where he tallied an 11-11 record over the past two seasons.

At Urbana he breathed new life into the program after taking over as interim Head Coach in the summer of 2006. In a

seamless transition, he guided that 2006 team to a 4-1 season start and was ranked as high as 10th in the NAIA

national rankings.

Place led the team to only its second winning season in program history after finishing up at 6-5. For six consecutive weeks the 2007 squad was ranked in the

NAIA’s Top 25. Over his two year tenure as head coach at Urbana Place saw 23 student-athletes named all conference, two student-athletes garner NAIA All-

America Honors, and two student-athletes be named to the NAIA Football All-America Scholar-Athlete team.

As the assistant head coach at Urbana, Place also served as the football program’s recruiting coordinator and academic advisor. He was integral in bringing several

of the best football classes into Urbana while also holding them to high academic standards. In fact while he was the team’s academic advisor they raised their

overall team GPA by one point.

Along with his six-year stint at Urbana, Place has college level coaching experience at Western Carolina University, Eureka College (IL), and Hartwick College (NY).

At WCU he served as a linebackers and defensive line coach while also heading up the academic support services for over 300 student-athletes within the WCU

athletic department. At Eureka he coached both wide receivers and tight ends, including the NCAA DIII’s All-Time Leading Receiver, Kurt Barth.

Place graduated from Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia with a B.A. in Psychology. At W & L he was a four-year member of the football team and

two-year letter winner. He has a M.S. from SUNY-Albany in Counseling Psychology.

Place is married to wife, Jennifer Zak Place, and together they have two children, Nathaniel who is eight years old and Claire who is six years old

MARK HALL

BRIAN MATESIC ASSISTANT HEAD

COACH: DEFENSE AND DEFENSIVE BACKS

Brian Matesic will enter his fifth season as an assistant coach in the Hawks football program. Matesic serves as the team’s

Assistant Head Coach of Defense and Defensive Backs. He helped produce All-CIAA defensive performer Tony Goodman. He

will once again call the plays on the defensive side of the ball for Chowan this season.

The Redford, Michigan native comes to Chowan after two seasons with the Urbana University Blue Knights where he worked

under then-head coach Tim Place. Place hired Matesic at Urbana in March of 2006 where he worked primarily with the

defensive backs. He was quickly promoted to the team’s recruiting coordinator and defensive passing game coordinator. His

coaching was instrumental in their on-field success in both the 2006 and 2007 seasons. Upon Place’s acceptance of the

Chowan head coaching position, Matesic served as Urbana’s Interim Head Coach until the athletic department named a new

head coach in late April. Place then offered Matesic a slot on his staff at Chowan.

Matesic earned his B.A. in Health Education and Recreation from Adrian College (MI) in 2001 and his M.S. in Sport

Management from the United States Sports Academy (AL) in 2002. He was a four-year member of the football program at

Adrian College, playing both defensive end and linebacker. He helped the team to an M.I.A.A. Championship in 1997. He has

been a member of the American Football Coaches Association since 2002.

Matesic and his wife, Brittany, have one son, Madix Michael Matesic, and are expecting a daughter at the end of the year. They

reside in Murfreesboro.

ASSISTANT HEAD COACH:

OFFENSE & QB/WR

Mark Hall will enter his fifth season as an assistant coach with the Chowan University football program. Hall is one of four

coaches that came to Chowan with Tim Place from Urbana University. Hall serves as the Assistant Head Coach for Offense

and Quarterbacks/Wide Receivers. Last season he helped produce All CIAA performer Robert Holland. Holland caught 65

passes for 804 yards last season, to go along with eight total touchdowns.

The Miamisburg, Ohio native got his start in college level coaching at Urbana in 2005 after completing his B.S. in Sports Leisure

Activities. At Urbana he coached the running backs and quarterbacks and was promoted to co-offensive coordinator in 2007.

Hall was a three-year starter and was a first team All-Ohio selection his senior year at Miamisburg High School. He graduated

from Urbana in 2005 with his B.S. and in May of 2007, he graduated from Urbana University with an MS in Education.

He and his wife Amy reside in Murfreesboro. Together they have two daughters, Avery and Makaylin. He is a member of the

LUTHER HENDERSON STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING

COORDINATOR & RUNNING

BACKS

Luther Henderson will enter his fifth season with the football staff at Chowan University. He was hired by Head Coach Tim

Place in the fall of 2008 where he helped coach the running backs. He took over the Hawks strength and conditioning program

in the spring of 2009, an area of major improvement according to Head Coach Tim Place.

"Each year we have gotten bigger, stronger, and faster. That is a credit to Coach Henderson's knowledge and hard work in

this area," said Place.

Henderson will head up the Hawks running game again this season.

Henderson was a five year member, four year player for Urbana University in Ohio. He served as a co-captain in his final two

seasons with the Blue Knights and was a one-time Mid-States Football Association All Conference Team member as a running

back.

He attended St. Francis DeSales High School in Ohio and spent one season after graduating from Urbana assisting his alma

mater prior to coming to Chowan.

Omar Nesbit will enter his sixth season with the Hawks football program and serves as the offensive line coach. He was hired

in January of 2007 to take over the offensive line, a unit that needed improving. Since his arrival the offensive line has shown

marked improvement on the field and in the weight room.

Nesbit, a native of Summerville, South Carolina, was a standout football player at Summerville High School. Following

graduation from Summerville High he continued his playing career at The Citadel as an offensive lineman. In his junior and

senior seasons he was named to the All Southern Conference Team while also earning All American Honorable Mention

honors in his senior season.

After graduating from The Citadel, Nesbit was hired at Fort Dorchester High School (SC) where he spent two years coaching

both the defensive and offensive lines. He also served as an instructor while at FDHS.

2012 SEASON PREVIEW

The Chowan University Hawks look ton continue their rise in the CIAA in 2012. Fifth year head coach Tim Place returns four starters on both offense and

defense, and has a substantial amount of depth on the team with a roster including 16 seniors. "A large senior class gives us a chance," indicates Place. "These

young men have a unique opportunity as well as a critical role. If we want to achieve what we have talked about, this group must do a great job of leading."

The offense is guided by senior wide receiver Robert Holland (Newport News, VA). In the 2011 season, Holland led the CIAA in receptions (69), and receiving

yards (914), and tallied a team-high 13 touchdowns.

On the defensive side of the ball, junior Jason Ampy (Sutherland, VA) is counted on as a key returner. Ampy finished the 2011 season in 4th for total season

tackles (90) tied for 17th in the CIAA in sacks (4). He had 37 solo tackles, and started all ten games for the Hawks.

Place led Chowan to a 3-7 record in 2011, leading to a tie for fourth place in the CIAA North Division. The Hawks finished fourth in the CIAA in 2011 in passing

offense, 241.9 yards per game. Chowan also led the league in kickoff return average (24.6 yards), and finished third in punt return average (13.5).

The Hawks will have five home contests this season, the most since 2007. "We are pleased to have a balanced schedule this season," stated Place on his playing

schedule for the 2012 season. "We have the utmost respect for every team on our schedule this year. We are going to take it one game at a time and see where

that leads us."

The Hawks will open the season with back-to-back road trips with stops at Livingstone College on September 1st and Virginia Military Institute September 8th.

They will open their home playing season with Shorter University (GA) on September 15th. Shorter is transitioning to NCAA DII status after competing as a

member of the NAIA's Mid-South Conference in Georgia.

Chowan will travel to Shaw University on September 22nd to open CIAA cross over play. The Hawks picked up a big win over the Bears last season, stunning

them with a 34-32 Homecoming victory.

Chowan will turn around to host three consecutive home CIAA match ups. On September 29th the Hawks will host Fayetteville State University out of the South

Division, the second of the team's cross over match ups. The Hawks will start divisional play on October 6th with a visit from Bowie State University.

Homecoming will feature the Hawks against Virginia Union University on October 15th in another divisional match up.

Chowan hits the road for their next two CIAA North Division games with stops at Elizabeth City State on October 20th and Virginia State on October 27th. They

will wrap up the regular season on November 3rd with a visit from Lincoln University (PA) for the annual Hall of Fame game.
