Dan DeRose embarks on his first season as the men's basketball coach at Chowan University. He is the third head coach in the program's four year school history (1993)  and only the second head coach since the school transitioned to NCAA DII status (2006). He was named the program's head coach in a press conference in April. DeRose comes to Chowan by way of Pennsylvania where he most recently served on the basketball staff at Seton Hill University, a member of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Prior to his time at SHU DeRose served as the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at the Community College of Beaver County for six seasons. During his six seasons at CCBC, he guided the men’s basketball team to six straight 20‐plus winning seasons. DeRose had gained national exposure for CCBC, a small, rural community college with an enrollment of 2,000 students. Under his leadership, the Titans have ranked as one of the top fifteen Junior College Basketball Teams in the nation during his six years. DeRose tallied an overall winning record of 139 wins and 45 losses during his tenure at CCBC. He had led the Titans to six consecutive WPCC regular season and conference tournament championship victories. His teams were in the PCAA State Championships in all six seasons as Head Coach, nailing two championship titles and four runner‐up titles.  

 DeRose’s success continued at the Region XX level, where the Titans won two years in a row (2005 and 2006). In 2006, The Titans also won the District II Championship, which qualified them for the national tournament in Danville, IL where the Titans finished in seventh place.   DeRose was no stranger to the CCBC program or its players. A CCBC team member himself in 1987‐1988, he also held the position of assistant coach during the 2001‐2002 season. Prior to coaching at CCBC, he served as head coach for Penn State‐McKeesport from 1998‐2001. DeRose has garnered 15 coaching awards in his six years at CCBC. Successfully demonstrating that he has developed the skills of his players both offensively and defensively, DeRose won WPCC Coach of the Year in 2003‐04, 2006‐07, 2007‐08 and 08‐09, PCAA State Coach of the Year in 2004‐05, and 2008‐09,Region XX Coach of the Year in 2004‐05 and 2005‐06, District Coach of the Year in 2005‐2006, and Beaver County Hall of Fame coach of the Year, 2003‐04, 2004‐05, 2005‐06, 2006‐07, 2007‐08, 2008‐09. DeRose is married to wife, Valerie and together they have a four year old daughter, Shae Marie.  

  

CHOWAN UNIVERSITY MEN’S BASKETBALL COACHING STAFF  

Brandon Chaison enters his  first season as anassistant  coach  with  the  basketball program. This is Chaison's first venture into coaching on the collegiate level. His playing experiences on both  the  collegiate  and  professional  levels combined with his coaching background in the AAU  ranks will have  an  immediate  impact on the  Hawks  program  this  season. Head Coach Dan  DeRose  recruited  and  coached Chaison at Beaver County CC  in Pennsylvania for two seasons where Chaison excelled as an All‐Conference  and All‐Region  performer. Chaison  finished  his  playing  career  at Seton Hill  University  (PA)  where in  his  junior season  he  earned  American  Mid‐East  All‐Conference honors. He comes to Chowan after most  recently  working  with  the  Houston Independent  School  District  as  an  associate teacher. Along  with  his  teaching  duties Chaison  worked  with  the DGIB  (Daniel Gibson)  AAU Hoops  program.  He  served  3 seasons with DGIB Hoops and was named the Houston Area AAU Coach of the Year  in 2009. He  also  has  2 seasons  coaching  experience with  the  Houstonians AAU  program. After finishing  his  playing  career  at  Seton  Hill  in 2006,  Chaison  spent  three  season  playing professionally  with  both  the  USBL's  Jackson Wildcats  (MS) and  the ABA's Houston Takers. 

James  Simpkins  enters  his  first  season  as  a student‐assistant  coach  for  the  men's basketball  program.  This  is  Simpkins  first venture at the Collegiate level. Before his stop here at Chowan he enjoyed 10 years in the US Army  where  he  played  for  the  Army  Post Men’s Varsity teams from 1998‐2000. Then  in 2000 he turned his focus onto coaching where he  began  his  coaching  career  as  the  Post Men’s  Varsity  Coach  where  he  compiled  an over all record  of 39‐7  in two seasons. While in his  first year his  team captured  the Capital Classic  Tournament,  the  Fort  Jackson Thanksgiving  Shootout  Championships  and  a second  place  finish  in  the  Virginia  Military Service League Championship. After two years as  the  Head  Coach  on  the  US  Army  Post Varsity  level  Simpkins  decided  to  move  his attention  to  the  nationally  known  and recognized Boo Williams Summer League AAU Organization  (2008  ‐  2010).  While  the  head coach  for  BWSL  New  Generation’s  boys basketball  team  he  led  them  to  the  2009 Virginia  State  Championship  and  a  second place finish in the 2009 AAU National’s Classic Bracket. Simpkins also brings experience in the development  and  marketing  of  basketball camps  from  working  with   mentor  Kevin Nickelberry,  head  coach  of  Howard Universities Men’s Basketball team.

Chowan enters a new era of basketball under first‐year Head Coach Dan DeRose. DeRose will lead the Hawks into the season with two returning starters and a slew of newcomer talent. Chowan will play  in only their second season  in the perennially challenging CIAA. A year ago Chowan shocked the  league with a 2nd place CIAA West Division finish. They will now play in the North Division of the CIAA.    

SEASON NOTES

Men’s Basketball Season Preview 2010‐2011  The Chowan University men’s basketball program heads into a new era of play under first‐year Head Coach Dan DeRose. DeRose was hired to take over the program in April of 2010. DeRose and his staff will have the challenge of replacing three starters from a year ago, including All‐CIAA performers Jaleel Nelson and Lando Morrison. Those two players were integral in Chowan’s success as a first‐year member of the basketball storied CIAA. The Hawks finished up at 18‐10 a year ago, including a 13‐7 CIAA record, and 2nd place CIAA West Division finish. DeRose worked hard over the summer months to bring in a talented group of junior college and high school players.  He hopes to mesh the returning players in the program with his new recruits to bring a new style and tempo to the court for the Chowan men’s basketball program in 2010‐2011.   The Hawks return all two starters from last year, including Mark Brown, the team’s 3rd leading scorer. Brown averaged 14.0 points an outing and hauled in 5.6 boards a game. Brown experienced six twenty‐plus points games last year, including a season high 23 points against Bowie State. He dropped 22 points against Elizabeth City State, Shaw, Lincoln, and Virginia Union. Also returning is shooting guard Charles Rhodes. Rhodes has been one of the program’s top outside threats. He averaged 8.0 points a game and hit for 35% from beyond the three point arch.   DeRose brought in key newcomers that will figure into his scheme immediately. Transfer James Davis (Washington, DC/Beville State CC) will be competing for a spot at the point guard position. Davis comes to Chowan as one of the top scorers in Friendship Academy history. Coming out of high school in 2007‐2008, Davis was ranked as the 7th best point guard in the greater Washington, D.C. Metro area.  Joseph Hassell (Portsmouth, VA/Indian River HS) and Jordan Dupree (Concord, DE/Concord HS) are two high school players that will have impact on the program this year. Hassell was All Southeastern District performer and a Hampton Roads (VA) All Star. Hassell will get his 

chance to work a forward position for Chowan. Dupree is a highly touted guard from Delaware. He left Concord High School as the 2nd leading scorer in school history.  He was also ranked as one of Delaware’s top guards in 2009‐2010.   The Hawks will need all returning and newcomer weapons as they embark on their second season playing in the CIAA.  Chowan, playing in the Northern Division of the CIAA, will have a hefty task to compete with perennial basketball powers like Virginia Union University, Elizabeth City State University, and Bowie State University.  Chowan opens CIAA play this year on January 6th with a cross over game with Johnson C. Smith University. They start divisional play on January 22nd with a road trip to Bowie State University. The Hawks are set to start the 2010‐2011 campaign at Barton College on November 16th.   Interesting Facts
