Wright claims assault by pensionerWaimea Village owner Michael Wright has called the police on a 65 year old woman who he accused of assaulting him – with a small plastic pen.The alleged assault happened almost two weeks ago after resident Marian Creyle was told she was three months in arrears and had “seriously breached” her lease contract. Tasman District Council will investigate the solution to Richmond’s growing traffic problems. What’s your biggest issue with the current situation?

Belina Haase, Richmond.

“Trying to get in and out of Robbies, you can’t get out. The entrance to and from there is the only thing that annoys me.”

Paige Jordan, Richmond.

“When the lights change eve-ryone gets quite confused. It’s just getting into Queen St and during the busy hours.”

Michelle Omlo, Wakefield.

“Every night those traffic lights by Gladstone Rd are a real pain. They’re not quick enough and they hold the traffic up.”

Rob Robinson, Richmond.

“They need traffic lights up by Waimea Village. You can’t get across the God damn road half the time.”

residents’ pay and this latest incident will not ease tensions.Marian says she was upset to get a letter telling her she was breaching her con-tract and says the behaviour of Michael was “disgusting”.“He kept on yelling out ‘you wanna hit me don’t ya? You wanna hit me.’ I said to

him ‘if I hit you Michael you won’t get back up’, because I’m a big girl.”Police visited Marian, who lives alone, and told her that the Wrights laid a complaint because she pushed Michael in the chest with a pen. Police gave her a verbal warning for mi-nor assault.“I missed the police when they first came but my neighbour told me they

had come and I thought ‘oh fancy them calling the police, because I felt we were both at fault’. “I think he’s just being a wimp and he likes to control older women. I’m not going to have him wrongly accuse me and not get away with it.“All he had to do was look up on his computer or bank statements to see that I’d paid, pretty simple.”

Plans to widen Wensley Rd by 14 metres have been put on ice after residents and one Tasman District councillor slammed council for its “pre-judged outcome”.Tasman District Council will now investigate further options following a Tasman Regional Transport Committee meeting, which some res-idents attended, last Friday. Councillor Judene Edgar, who is on the committee, disa-greed with the decision to pick Wens-ley Rd without seriously investigating further options. She says the increase in traffic volume on Wensley Rd is not because of growth in Richmond South, it’s because motorists are avoiding Glad-stone Rd’s traffic lights. “It’s people from Brightwater, Wakefield and even peo-ple from Three Brothers Cnr coming straight from Mapua, Motueka and Golden Bay who want to avoid Gladstone because there’s no right turn at Queen St now,” says Judene. “The traffic lights have changed the flow of cars.”Last week Tasman District Council transport manager Gary Clark predicted traffic volumes on Wensley Rd would rise from its current 4000 per day to 10,300 per day by 2020. To accom-modate those figures, council had earmarked the hilltop segment of Wensley Rd and spots near intersections as areas that could be widened from its current 12 metres to 26.5 metres in ten years time. Council could have been forced into purchasing land off Wensley Rd landowners to accommodate the widened road.

But Judene says the solution should be to “fix the problem, not shift the problem”. Council have since agreed to an investigation on the en-tire ring road; however that is unlikely to com-mence within the next ten years. The change will be written into the final Regional Transport Plan and handed to council. Wensley Rd resident Wayne Mackey didn’t necessarily see it as coun-cil backtracking but says the result proved there was no definitive plan in the first place. Wayne

made a presentation to the committee on Friday which highlighted a decrease in traffic volume on Gladstone Rd. He says the traffic volume went from 19,324 per day in 2007 to 16,750 in 2011. “A lot of the cars are taking the easier route through Wensley Rd because the traf-fic lights and the ring road simply isn’t working,” he says.Judene thanked the efforts of Wensley

Rd residents Wayne and his wife Karen. The Mackeys’ research began after reading council’s newsletter, Newsline, highlighting “Wensley Rd Improvements Design” in its draft regional land transport programme for 2012-2022, only to find those improvements could have seen the road widened by 14 metres, going right through their kitchen. The Mackeys printed out a letter of council’s in-tent to all of the Wensley Rd residents. Without that letter, none of the residents would have even known about the proposal, says Judene. “I was so thankful for the homework they had done. I don’t know how much information we would have had supplied at the meeting.”

Roading options to be investigated

out what was available on the current market. That search led the Reids to an aero museum that was closing down in Wangaratta, Australia. They were immediately hooked on an Avro An-son, which was up for sale. The Reids decided to purchase the twin-engine aircraft, so it was dismantled and shipped back to New Zealand in pieces. It had last been used in a film titled Half a World Away in 1992.The Reid’s first task involved the construction of a purpose-built hangar at their 88 Valley prop-erty in Wakefield to restore the aeroplane over what was expected to be the next three years. The restoration process began in early 2003 and has lasted right up until now. Since then there has been four different fuselages come and go – each having contributed to the finished aero-plane – and numerous frantic trips across the globe scouring for parts. As often the case with rare antique items, owners are not always will-ing to sell and the Reids had to swap most of the parts for other rare items they had collected over the years.More than 7000 Avro Anson Mk I bombers were built in the 1930s and 1940s by the Brit-ish, some being shipped off to the Royal Aus-tralian Air Force and the NZ Royal Air Force. This particular Avro Anson was retired in the 50s and sold into the civil market. None of the Avro Anson Mk Is with wooden wings were allowed to fly after 1963 unless they had their

wooden wings replaced by metal ones. The pre-vious owner of the Reid’s Avro Anson was able to source metal wings and tail plate, enabling it to be able to continue to fly.Two experienced aircraft engineers, Peter Lacy and Mike Cole, have been working on the pro-ject alongside Bill since 2003. Robyn explains that the length of time was also stretched be-cause it was paramount the aircraft retained its authenticity right down to the finest detail. “Everything down to the little compass paper is totally authentic. It gives people the chance to see what it was really like,” she says. It also fea-tures a gun turret, replicating its wartime image. Its primary use will be at air shows around New Zealand, but Robyn and Bill have not ruled out personal overseas trips in the 1943 bomber.Because of its rarity, Robyn was unable to put a price tag on the aircraft. However, the fuel cost to fill it up is around the $1000 mark and that gives the Reids between three to four hours fly-ing time.Bill and Robyn will hold a public display when the Avro Anson has been flight tested and is confirmed ready for use. They spent the weekend just gone, taxiing the aircraft around Nelson airport, doing final checks with one of their test pilots New Zealand Royal Air Force Pilot Sean Perrett, who also flies Brendon Deere’s Spitfire. The aircraft must be signed off by chief engineer, Mike, before it is able to fly. Only then will Bill be taught how to fly his own plane.

Satellite school opens on Henley/Waimea campusThe official opening of a new $1.2 million satellite facility for special needs children from Richmond and Waimea is a positive step forward for educa-tion in the Nelson region, says National MP Nick Smith.Nick officially opened the Maitai School class-room on the same campus as Henley Kindergar-ten, Henley School, Waimea Intermediate School and Waimea College last Friday. The satellite school caters for ten children from Year 0 through to Year 8. They will also be in-volved at Henley School and Waimea Interme-diate School’s curriculum when deemed able. At present the satellite classroom currently has five students, with two more to be enrolled next week.Previously, Maitai School students from the Tas-

man area had to catch taxis into the city.Nick says satellite classrooms are the best option for some students with significant disabilities be-cause they combine the best worlds of a main-stream school environment with the support of specialist teachers. “This initiative makes perfect sense for children, their families and the wider community. Previ-ously special needs children from this part of the region either had to travel into Nelson for their education or become mainstreamed,” he says. The satellite school had been in process since 2009, says Henley School principal John Armstrong, but it was only when the Ministry of Education raised the initial funding from $500,000 to $1.2 million that it could actually go ahead.

Can you dead lift your own body weight? If so, you could become $1000 richer thanks to the Richmond Mall and Nelson’s own Power Angels. This Saturday from 11am to 1pm, the Power Angels, Aimee Banks, Chris Webber and Celia

McMillian, will be hosting a power lifting com-petition in the mall with $100 Richmond Mall vouchers instantly given out to the first five peo-ple that can dead lift twice their body weight. An-yone that dead lifts their body weight will go into the draw to claim $1000 worth of vouchers. The Power Angels described themselves as three “mothers” who double as national power lifting champions. The competition will raise some pub-licity for the trio before they take on the national champs later in the year.Entry into the challenge is $2 per person.

Have you got the power?

A spat of broken letterboxes in Richmond was likely caused by mischievous teenagers, say police.Last week the Richmond Community Police re-ported a high number of wilful damage occur-rences which left a trail of destruction in Oxford St, Wensley Rd and Otia Drive.Roeske St. Farnham Drv and Hunt St were other areas targeted during the period of Queen’s Birth-day Weekend. The majority of those offences were vandalism to letterboxes.Community constable Glen Lloyd Jones says wil-ful damage to letterboxes is often caused by high school students around the time of school breaks so it was likely they were causing the problems again. “It comes and goes. We normally experience a lot of letterbox damage occurring on school holidays or long weekends,” says Glen.Police were not sure if it was an individual or a group causing the damage and say it is often dif-ficult to trace the vandalism to any suspects. “Unfortunately people don’t hear it or see it until the next day so it’s very hard to track down who these people are.”

Richmond hit by vandalism

Scheduled classes were collapsed in favour of singing, dancing and painting at Garin College for its annual Mahi Toi celebration. For two days the students cel-ebrated the spirit of the arts, giv-ing students a chance to discover and explore their creative talents. This was the tenth year the cel-ebration has been held at Garin College, with students having the freedom to participate in a range of activities either individually or as a part of a group. Many of the activities became a competi-tion between the school’s four

houses. The cupcake decorating proved the most popular activity, says organisers. Bands from the school had the chance to play for their classmates, including fifth form band Speaking in Si-lence. The school’s own version of Wearable Arts also revealed some impressive creations.Cath Aronsten, arts director at Garin, says the event is a chance for students who don’t normal-ly expose a talent to perform around their peers and gain their encouragement.

Around 3000 punters went through the gates on day one of the Nelson Harness Racing Club’s winter meeting at Richmond Park.A rescheduled meeting saw the first day of races moved from Friday to Sunday as Christchurch horses were halted by the icy weather en route to Nelson. One hundred of the 177 nominations were coming via Christchurch so organisers made the call to postpone the date.A chill was still there on Sunday but entrants warmed to the races and hot coffee and were treated by some early success by two local hors-es.Bill Morgan’s Colonel Custard driven by Murray Pash finished the Cavalier Trotting Products/

Atomic Travel 2400m Pace in fourth place while Robert Stuart’s Jass, also driven by Murray, ran third in the Golden Girls Series 1609m Mobile Pace.Harness Racing Club president John McKen-zie was “very happy” with the public’s response despite the rescheduling. “A lot of people had probably arranged to take time off work on the Friday but it’s one of those things. I think we did the right thing postponing the event.”There was a turnover of $107,000 on Sunday, ap-proximately $3000 down from last year.Day two was highlighted by the Nelson Winter Cup. It was held yesterday afternoon after the Waimea Weekly went to print.

Specializing in women’s fashion footwear and accessories sourced from around the world, the selection of boots, heels and stunning brands such as Jeffrey Campbell, Andrea Biani, Django & Juliette, Mollini, Briarwood and many more is a fabulous excuse to sit on their comfortable ottomans and try. U-turn saves technology at intermediatesWaimea Intermediate School’s technology department is safe for the long term, fol-lowing the government’s decision to back track on class ratio sizes. The change, implemented in the 2012 Budget, would have seen specialist tech-nology teachers lose their jobs because of the way they had been traditionally funded. Waimea Intermediate School principal Cleve Shearer says the decision to cut technology teachers was the “most harm-ful decision” he had witnessed in his 30 years of working in education. “It definite-ly wasn’t thought through. Clearly some-one in the Ministry of Education has made a mistake,” he says. When the news of the u-turn went pub-lic on Thursday, Cleve put the word over the school’s intercom. “I told the technol-ogy staff and there was cheering. I could almost hear the building shake with all of the applause, it was great.”National MP Nick Smith spent a lot of time with the technology students and teachers last week. He made the visit to Waimea Intermediate School following meetings with Cleve and the region’s other intermediate headmasters.Hard technology teacher Chris Bowen says the result is a win for education. “The parents won. I never felt so supported ever. It was good news for the kids.”

Nelson’s top bands are getting set to battle and organisers say the outcome will mean a night of music to remember.Eleven bands have registered for the event, filling the roster for the Battle of the Bands at the Shark Club this Saturday night. The event will start at 7pm and feature bands playing their original music for 20 minutes. Judges will then select an overall winner with spectators also able to vote for a people’s choice win-ner.Most of the bands have put their

genre down as rock with others playing punk rock, punk pop and heavy metal.Organiser Aaron Douglas says the variety means people will be able to stay for the entire night of entertainment. The winner will be crowned around 1.30am and support from local businesses has con-tributed to the prize pool. For more details or to see what time each band will take to the stage, visit the Shark Club’s face-book page and search battle of the bands.

Aquatic centre installs chair lift

Bands ready to battle

Anyone and everyone can access ASB Aquatic & Fitness Centre’s swimming pools now that a hydraulic chair lift has been installed. The $20,000 chairlift was donated by the Tas-man District Council. It can carry up to 130 kg and is designed solely for pool use.ASB Aquatic & Fitness Centre facility manager Vaughan Hope has been busy fielding calls from the Stroke Foundation, the Amputee Society and other groups who are interested to use the equipment. It also works for people with minor injuries that find getting into the pool difficult. It allows access to all pools except the wave pool, which already has a wheel chair suited for water use.

Murchison sisters’ golden winMurchison sisters Jade and Jemma Gibson were the toast of the town last week. The Murchison Area School students collected the prestigious Golden Guitar for Best Jun-ior Overall Performance at the Golden Guitar Awards in Gore.Jemma also won the Best Country Rock Singer with Jade making the top four.

The Gibson sisters have been singing country music for the past five years but it was the first time they had made the trip down south for the awards.Jemma can also play the guitar and the banjo. However, when they perform they stick strictly to their vocals. They will perform as guest artists next year.

Young country singing stars Jade and Jemma Gibson won the Best Junior Overall at the Gold Guitar Awards in Gore last weekend.

Westmeat are your local butcher boasting the freshest cuts of meat at the best price. Put a hearty meal on your table every night this winter with the help of the friendly and expe-rienced butchers. They stock the best quality meats for all budgets, catering for low and high incomes, and everything between. The Rich-mond Westmeat franchise has become well respected even within the national Westmeat brand, often delivering meat to Picton, Takaka and throughout New Zealand. The thing that sets Westmeat apart from other butchers is their ability to keep prices on quali-ty meat lower. Westmeat runs their own Angus cattle farms and is owned by a freezing com-pany, cutting out the middle men wherever possible. This reduces costs dramatically and keeps prices lower for customers.Westmeat has a large team of experienced butchers breaking down the meat that is de-livered fresh to the factory each morning. The factory is located just out the back of the retail store. The majority of meat is cut and pack-aged on site by the expert butchers, many of whom have decades of experience to produce the best cuts.Westmeats pride themselves in customer ser-vice and satisfaction. They have won the loy-alty of many commercial clients due to their dedication and attention to detail, and their willingness to fulfil specified orders. One local restaurant, for instance, has the provision that they require their top quality steaks cut to a specific weight ready to be cooked and served,

for more than 20 customers to ensure your trip to Westmeat is as convenient and pleasant as possible.Westmeat began as a west coast butchery owned and operated by Jack Ferguson, a well known local entrepreneur and pioneer of butchery in New Zealand. This business originally consisted of a factory and wholesale cutting operation in Hokitika and ‘Meat Tavern’ shops in Hokitika and Greymouth, supplied by the West Coast Re-gional Abattoir. Westmeat has grown and nowadays is a dynam-ic, quality focused meat wholesaler which oper-ates throughout the South Island, drawing on the strength of its parent company ANZCO Foods, one of NZ’s leading meat processors and export-ers. Westmeat Richmond is managed by Kevin Krammer, who attributes Westmeat Richmond’s success to the dedicated staff who maintain the local feel while delivering specials which more than compete with the competitors. Much of the staff base has been with the team for years, with some in the butchery boasting more than 40 years with the company. Kevin himself has 38 years under his belt. The drive-through parking lot allows the con-venience to drop in and grab something for din-ner or to take the time to stock up. Westmeat

is open 8am to 5pm weekdays, with a late 6.30pm close on Thursday, and is open 8am to 3pm on Saturdays. Look out for the blue building on the corner of McGlashen Ave and McIndoe St in Richmond. Local softballer Megan Thomson has been named in the White Sox development team and will compete for her country in Australia next month.Megan, 18, has been asked to join the team as the catcher, a position in which she has excelled, de-spite her 6 foot 2 height which is not commonly seen in catchers.“I’ve never heard of a female catcher of my height before,” Megan says. “I was often told not to catch because I’m too tall. Height can be a disadvantage in getting up at speed and getting out of the way of the umpire’s view, but there are advantages in reach.”Megan took up the sport at Waimea Intermedi-ate School, joining a boys-only team. Softball at-

tracted her as it wasn’t a mainstream sport that everyone gravitated towards. With a strapping boy pitching, the coach con-vinced the strong and sporty Megan to catch. And she took to it immediately, training every lunchtime, and enjoying the responsibility of controlling the game. After one season in a school-aged grade, Megan found herself playing in the Nelson Women’s League at age 13. It was also at this age she first played for her province – as catcher no less. Megan admits the prospect of being a fully fledged White Sox one day is “awesome.” She will com-pete at the Softball Australia International Youth Cup, being held in Sydney at the start of July.

The White way forwardThe birth of his first child has led former A-League forward Mike White back to Nelson. He spoke with Waimea Weekly reporter Phillip Rollo about life back in his hometown.

When Mike White signed his first professional contract as an 18 year-old, he didn’t expect that just seven years later he’d find himself back play-ing at Saxton Field. The Welsh born former New Zealand Knights player is “back home indefinitely” following the birth of his first child and he has his sights firmly set on playing ASB Premiership in Nelson.Mike is one of the best players Richmond has ever produced. He has been an ever-present fig-ure at domestic level, playing for Waitakere Unit-ed, Canterbury United, YoungHeart Manawatu and Team Wellington and has represented New Zealand A on a tour to Vietnam, New Zealand Under-20 and New Zealand Under-17. He even played semi-professional football in Wales.Mike was playing Central Premier League foot-ball with Miramar Rangers and enjoying another season with Team Wellington when his partner Jamee Thomson gave birth to Maddie. So he de-cided to throw away the chance to play regularly under the nose of Wellington Phoenix scouts and move closer to his family.Having scored six goals in the past two matches for AMI Nelson Suburbs, Mike has proved he is still a level above anything on offer in the region. But things could have ended up much differently for the former Waimea College student. Mike made his A-League debut in 2006 and went on to make 11 appearances for the New Zealand Knights. He had just penned a two year contract extension when the club folded in 2007, ending his dream of playing professional football. “Even just thinking about it now it’s pretty disappoint-

ing. But at the end of the day that’s just football,” says Mike. “Within eight months of leaving school I was on a full-time wage playing football. But obviously you don’t get those opportunities everyday.”While short-lived, playing professionally is an obvious career highlight for Mike. But he also has fond memories of playing for Nelson Sub-urbs as a teenager. “You remember things when you win and I like winning.”Although he enjoyed playing for Nelson, Mike says there is only so much Mainland Premier League football you can play before you need to take the next step. Which, until now, has always involved skipping town and playing in Christch-urch. Nelson has made a formal bid to New Zea-land Football to be included in an expanded ASB Premiership. Mike told the Waimea Weekly last year that he would be the first person to put his hand up and play for the side if that did happen. So right now, he’s cautiously waiting for that out-come before committing to Canterbury United for another season. “Obviously I’ve represented some teams in the ASB Premiership but none of them have ever been my hometown. I’m a Nelson boy through and through and I want to represent Nelson and what better way than on a national stage. I’m just really hoping it does go ahead.”Mike was also in contact with “five or six” cur-rent ASB Premiership players who were interest-ed in playing for a Nelson based national league side. He admits the focus must be on the local talent and who knows, it could discover the next Mike White.

After a week of woeful wintertime weather saw grounds closed and trainings cancelled, game-day dawned at Wanderers Sports Club with clear skies and a south westerley wind that Wellington would be proud of.Malbas Wanderers Wolves were looking to con-solidate after a disappointing loss last week, while the Wairau Taniwha again travelled over from Blenheim determined to show that they could win away from home for the first time this year.Against the run of play the Wolves found an opening on the left, Sam Hedges offloading to centre Joe Collins who raced away to score a 60 metre try the side’s first four pointer. The Wolves kicked up a gear and backed up its opening try with quick tries in succession to put pressure on the opposition. Ben Cooper scored his first of the season, burrowing over from dummy half close to the line and Sam scored the first of what would be a productive day for the

representative player. Knowing that the season was on the line and a loss could possibly spell the end of its finals aspi-rations, the Wolves finally awoke from its slum-ber and impressed in the second half. With 20 minutes to go it was anyone’s game and when the Taniwha scored through Joe Asiata to lead by six, it was make or break time for a Wolves side that hadn’t yet been beaten at Brightwater Domain. Finally enjoying some good field position and possession, they made it pay with Hayden again putting on pressure with his kicking game allow-ing Sam to score his hat trick. Halfback Josh McMillan scored a final try right on fulltime, snatching an offload from Joe to race away for his first of the season and the suc-cessful conversion ensured the record stayed in-tact with the Wolves coming away hard fought victors 39-28.The Wolves have a well earned bye next week af-ter securing the competition points in three out of their four second round games.

Winger scores six tries against Marist“When your winger is scoring tries, you know the backs are play-ing well,” says Wanderers divi-sion three coach John Eggers. But when your winger scores six tries, the backs must have had a damn fine game and it appears they did, scoring 49 unanswered points against the competition’s second best team.Wanderers remain undefeated this season, despite having points deducted for player breaches ear-lier in the campaign they are now finally top of the table.Darren Mongan had not scored a try all season, but in a matter of 80 minutes he became one of the competition’s top try scorers. Ni-gel Win and Brett Carter also dot-ted down over the chalk to score.Arakis Manoli landed three con-versions and one penalty.John says the result came off the back of a dominant forward pack. Steve Wallace and John Reuben were two of the game’s top per-

formers, along with Darren. The side will head to Upper Mou-tere this weekend when they tack-le Rangers.Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers secured a close fought 24-22 vic-tory over Renwick in the Bayleys Tasman Trophy, finally adding to their early season form.Kurtis Bandy scored Wanderers’ first try of the match to give them a 7-5 lead at halftime. Riley John-ston and Damian Powick then added to the scoresheet to give the ‘Wizards’ a handy 12 point buffer. Dan Perrin had another strong match. When Sione Holani scored his first of the match, the game looked in the bag for Wanderers. However, things quickly changed in the final ten minutes as mo-mentum swung the way of the homeside. Two late tries put them back in the match. But Amco Cas-sidy missed a sideline conversion that could have sealed the match at 24-24.

Waimea Old Boys Rugby

Galbraith Group Nelson had bragging rights over Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys on Saturday, toppling the sides in division one and two competitions.Mistakes let Nelson breeze past Waimea 36-13 to seal top spot of Pool A in the Bayleys Tasman Trophy. The game took a while to find its feet both teams testing each other before Nelson first five James Lash decided to take a drop-pie to get themselves in front after 15 mins of play.It looked like it might stay that way till half time as well but a late Nelson try to Mitchell Scott saw them go in the break 10-0 up over Waimea. A resurgent Waimea pack had the breeze at its back in the second half as it faced towards the clubrooms. The halftime break broke all of Nelson’s momentum and a Josh Rutledge penalty and a James Lowe drop goal saw Waimea edge within four points of the vistitors. But from then on it was all Nelson, scor-ing two unanswered tries, taking them

to 24–6 lead midway though the second half.James got Waimea on the board again though, scoring a well worked try.But his efforts were all in vein as Nelson replied with one of their own to put them out of reach. The win sees Nelson take the Noel Barton Trophy and top Pool A with one week re-maining.The Waimea Old Boys division two side

also took on Nelson with a similar result. A late try could have sealed a late victory, but the forwards were not able to find the awaiting wingers when there were clear overlaps, handing Nelson a 27-22 win. Nelson had two players sent to the bin in the dying stages as they held Waimea out.Nelson held a 17-6 lead at halftime, with Waimea playing into a strong southerly. Although the loss continues a run of defeats, the side showed

more control and smarter tactics than in previous encounters. They were unlucky not to steal the win at the deeath. The men are off to Brightwater to take on defending champions Wanderers this Sat-urday in what likely will be a feisty affair.

Waimea Women’s Rugby team has kept their winning streak alive after a tough win over Marist in the weekend. With a full squad of over 22 players the team is looking to build on its form and work together as one unit to improve each week with semi finals only three games away.

With a very even start to the game it took Waimea 20 minutes to score their first points of the match with a penalty kick from Penny Stickney. Marist soon answered with two tries back to back. Waimea kicked into gear and of course the speedy fullback Aliesha Hart used her pace to score a massive run away try. Waimea once again used the boot of Penny to take the three points from the

penalty to put them up by one point at half time.Fifteen minutes into the second half Alei-sha crossed the line again for her second try of the match. It took Waimea another 15 minutes before hard working flanker Kylie Albert fought her way to cross the line. Followed by a great try to halfback Tash Kara. Marist were not ready to give up and scored a further two tries in the

second half to put them behind by six, fighting all the way to the final whistle. The final score 30 to 24 to Waimea.A young but hard working Taylor Curtis showed her team that size doesn’t matter with an awesome effort at first five run-ning great plays and tackling her heart out all game. Taylor got a very well deserved player of the day for Waimea Old Boys’ womens team.

Waimea College 10A definitely received a pass mark when they played its first game in Grade 1. The college team gained promotion after winning Grade 2 while the opposing Wander-ers Taylors A side had been relegated from the Premier grade. Waimea achieved its goal in the first round, however their mission in the second round is to develop their com-binations for the South Island Tourna-ment which is the focus for the season. They won the Year 9 tournament last year and would like to do a repeat as Year 10 students in 2012.Considering the scenario, one could easily think there should have been more than seven goals in the final score of 29–22.Wanderers had a better start – scoring five of the first seven goals, while Waimea came to terms with the more physical style and the sheer speed

of the release. Wanderers had a 9–6 lead at the first break. The second period saw numerous turnovers as both teams were guilty of unforced errors, how-ever it was Wanderers who came out with a 6–2

advantage.Wanderers looked more relaxed and less under pressure to perform as they had in the elite grade. The side was well served by defender Yakira Hoeta–Taituha who read the play exceedingly well, to gather in five well timed inter-cepts. Yakira looked long for the feed, and found her shooters with accuracy. Kiriana Davis was solid at goal keep

before taking over the GS bib for the final quar-ter to convert 5 from 6.Wanderers had an abundance of possession, however its shooters did not always find the tar-get with just a 74 per cent goal average.
