We are like you. We know that sports areoften the ties that hold us together, thatgive us a way to talk about the things wecare about when other words fail. We knowsports can be fun even in losing. Boy,do we know. We know that anybody whosays it doesnt matter whether the Cubs orSox are in the World Series so long as itsa Chicago team isnt truly a fan of eitherteam. We know. But on Monday, we werereminded again how fragile it all can be.The explosions and injuries and death at a world-classsportingevent suchas theBostonMarathon make us heartsick. As much asit is anathema for a Chicago fan to root forany other town especially Beantown andall of its championship rings here we are.

    Hang in there, Boston.

TORONTO Mark Buehrleused the words weird andcrazy to describe facing a White Sox team he was a member of for 12 memorableseasons.

Thosewordsalsofitthe latestmisfortunes of the Sox, whofailed to deliver a knockoutpunch and fell to Buehrle andthe Blue Jays 4-3 fortheir sixthloss in seven games on their10-game trip.

As he did for most of his 161wins with theSox from 2000 to2011, Buehrle relied on hiscrafty pitching to work out of jams. His signature momentoccurred with two outs in the

fifth inning when he struck outlongtime friend Paul Konerkoona full countwithtwo on.

Konerko had hit an RBIsingleandlinedto left inhis firsttwo at-bats but wasnt toohappy about a 2-1 pitch on theoutside corner that wascalleda strike by plate umpire Tony Randazzo.

I had the at-bat I wanted tohave, Konerko said. I hada 2-1pitch that was ... whatever. Sosometimes youve got twochoices. You stand up there andstrike out looking, or youswing the bat on a pitch you dontwant to swing at or dont haveto.Thats themoralof thestory.
