The conical twin-screw extruders from KraussMaffei Berstorff are ideal for the lower output range, either as standalone extruders or for coextrusion. In this category, they offer critical design and process engineering benefits.

The short, compact design saves valuable production area – the angled alignment of the screw axes makes space for a rugged distributing gearbox and a substantial back pressure bearing. This machine design ensures optimal functionality even in relentless round-the-clock production. The relatively small screw diameter results in minimal back pressure forces in the metering zone, which contributes to the long service life of the back pressure bearings. The screw, specially designed for PVC processing, ensures extremely gentle plasticizing.

On double-conical screws the flight depth decreases

from intake to output zone. On conventional single-

conical screws, by contrast, the flight depth remains

constant over the whole length of the screw.

Uniform pre-plasticizing and optimal thermal

homogeneity

Single-conical screws can be double-flighted from

the intake zone to the compression zone. This

ensures uniform material processing. The shal-

lower flight depth in the intake and precom-

pression zones of single-conical screws means

that heat transfer from the barrel heating is

significantly better. In consequence, the powder

achieves optimal thermal homogeneity during the

pre-plasticizing phase.

Benefits of longer screws

The longer screws of the KMD 43 K/P and KMD

63 K/P guarantee a very stable process, optimal

melt homogeneity, a wider processing window for

different formulations, and pressure stability up

to 500 bar, with a constant conveying rate even

against high die resistance.

Coextruders for profile extrusion

The machines in our conical extruder series are

available as standard standalone extruders and as

coextruders for profile extrusion. Coextrusion is

an important trend in plastics processing. In profile

extrusion, a coextrusion solution can allow the core,

or other non-visible window parts, to be made of

cheaper regrind, with only a thin outer layer made

of colour-fast virgin material. Profile manufacturers

want space-saving coextrusion solutions.

Piggyback configurations save space

Combinations of parallel basic extruders and one

or two piggyback extruders are common. The

basic extruder processes the regrind, while the

coextruder processes the virgin material. Conical

extruders with a screw diameter of up to 63 mm

can be mounted above the main extruder, and

capable of movement in two axes. KraussMaffei

Berstorff offers a wide range of coextruders and

unique space-saving coextrusion concepts such

as post-mounted and piggybacked combinations.

The C5 control – one of the most advanced control and monitoring systems in the industry

Centralized control of the extrusion line

Meeting tough specifications for product quality and

output demands a stable, reliable production process.

This is where the C5 control system scores. As one of

the most advanced systems in the industry, it offers

dependable technology and intelligent functions for

centralized control and monitoring of extrusion lines.

For the operator, the C5 ensures optimal set-up and

start-up, and a clear, consistent overview of the pro-

duction process. Monitoring and control is facilitated

by efficient visualization of the status of different

extrusion line components on a series of screen pages.

Central synchronization of the whole line, including

multiple extruders, is fast and simple. The operator

panel allows direct intervention in the operation of

all key elements in the extrusion line. The current

operating status of the whole line is always displayed,

together with a customizable selection of seven actual

parameters. Prompts and alarm messages flash up

in your chosen language. The C5 offers extensive

documentation options and easy connection to a host

computer. The standard design features an integrated

operator panel; swivel-mounted or mobile panels are

offered as options. The swivel-mounted panel, for

example, enables the operator to run the whole line

from a position near the die.

Benefits that pay off

The drastic extension of the preheating zone in the

new KMD 43 K/P and KMD 63 K/P significantly

reduces shear energy input to the melt. The propor-

tionate increase in heat energy makes it possible

to control the entire process much more precisely

by controlling the processing unit temperature. It

also makes it easier to process different materials,

eg, dryblend, granulate or regrind. This greatly in-

creases production flexibility over the whole output

range of the machine. It also makes it easier to change

stabilizing agents if necessary.

The high-performance gear system allows the

specific throughput to be increased; this means

higher output for the same screw speed. The

longer screw and further improved screw geom-

etries ensure optimal melt homogeneity thanks

to gentle, uniform plasticizing. The proven,

self-regulating internal screw temperature control

contributes to uniform plasticizing, excellent melt

homogeneity and to a marked reduction in shear

energy, and ultimately to lower maintenance

effort. Molybdenum hard-facing is standard

on KMD 43 K/P and KMD 63 K/P screws. It’s

because the new conical machine generation are

universal workhorses, engineered for reliable

performance and productivity that they promise

excellent returns on your investment.
