Streetlight Q&A, written by Diane Krebs Why don’t we have streetlights? Post 1998, the remainder of The Crossings was annexed by the city in July 2005. Any resident could have contacted the city to request a petition for streetlights in their sub division. With no volunteers the Board of Directors decided to step forward and begin with lighting for the entirety of Moss Road for security of the sidewalks and the pool area after two break-ins in the spring 2006. Why is it taking so long? With the growth of Charlotte the city is inundated with requests for lighting and the process works slowly. Moss Road is considered a connector street with high vehicle volumes with a proposal to install 250-watt high-pressure sodium fixtures on 20’ poles and is divided into phases per development. The city will process only one phase at a time to avoid tying up their resources. Phase I is The Waters which began with the petition of interest completed in October 2006, forwarded to Duke Energy for the lighting plan and returned for final signatures. By June 21st the final selection will be made and forwarded to the city streetlight coordinator. Phase II for The Crossings for Moss Road can begin immediately as signatures for the petition of interest was also completed in October 2006. When will I have lights in my sub division? Petitions for sub division lights will follow the Moss Road petition, a time line that cannot be pinpointed. The lead petitioner, Diane Krebs, will guide the process in the sub divisions once Moss Road is complete. With great appreciation, four residents have stepped forward to volunteer for the sub divisions.

Maintaining Standards through Architectural Review, Written by Carolyn Spellman

Webster defines “community” as a group of people sharing common social interest, fellowship and government of that area. That’s the expression of what we would like to promote on the Architectural Review Committee here at The Crossings. We want to ensure that we maintain the standards of the stellar community that we are. It is our intent to do our part to make sure that we remain a desirable community. We want to make sure that we raise awareness of what is acceptable and within the guidelines of our covenant. We are looking for energetic people who are passionate about maintaining the appeal of our community to join this committee. We also would like to remind each homeowner to review the covenant restrictions before making any changes to the exterior of your home. Be informed. Go to the website and complete the necessary forms before you begin any work. Help to maintain the consistency of the beauty of our community. The Crossings Board of Directors is pleased to announce the formation of our community Safety Committee, chaired by The Crossings neighborhood Crime Watch guru and retired military veteran, Dave Willard. The Safety Committee, through recruitment of Neighborhood Watch participants, will serve as the extra eyes and ears in our community for the purpose of reporting crime and helping to keep our community safe. This committee will help build pride and serve as a catalyst in efforts to address community safety concerns and provide solutions. The Safety Committee is in need of YOU to partner with the Board of Directors, your neighbors and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department to prevent crime in our community. If you are interested in serving on this committee or chairing the Community Watch Program for your subdivision, please contact a member of the Board of Directors or email Dave Willard at [email protected].

We are currently seeking residents to serve on our newly developed Newsletter Committee. Anyone with interests, please contact a member of the Board of Directors or send an email noting your interests to [email protected]. We are ALWAYS seeking volunteers to assist with various community projects and participate on our sub-committees. Teens and college students are especially welcome to participate and earn valuable community service hours needed for graduation and/or personal achievement. The Association is happy to provide letters of experience to volunteers for career and/or personal advancement. Make a difference. Join a sub-committee today.

Liz and Larry Donald are all about kids. Their kids, their grandkids, their foster kids and yes, even the kids on the Cabarrus County school bus that Liz drives and in the schools where she is a substitute cafeteria worker. Larry and Liz are originally from Louisville, Kentucky. Larry moved to Charlotte in 1999 while he and Liz were still dating. Three years later, Liz packed up her things and 2 grandchildren (hers and his) and followed him to Charlotte. They were married the next year with two of their grandchildren standing up with them. They haven’t been without a child in their home since. Even now, they have a grandson living with them as well as Liz’s mother. Larry says mentoring children is his calling and you can easily believe that. His conversations are peppered with remarks full of concern for needy and underprivileged youth such as “Learn to be part of society and not take advantage of society”. Larry and Liz are the embodiment of advocates for social change, one child at a time. Until April, Liz and Larry had 3 foster sibling foster children. The young girls were placed with the Donald’s when they were ages 1, 2 and 3. After 3 years, the children were moved to an adoptive home setting, where the new parents wished to keep the 3 girls together. Of course, that isn’t the end for the Donald’s. They keep the girls’ 19-month-old sister on many weekends and they all visit together often. There is an infant sister and a 7-year-old brother that come over as well. This next time though, Liz thinks she would like to have an older foster child. “I’ve wanted to have a teen-age daughter,” she says. Well, whoever is lucky enough to be placed with the Donald’s can be sure of being well loved and guided on a positive path through life. Wish I were a kid…

Many residents in our community have expressed an interest in creating a stronger community by developing an informal network of available babysitters within our community. While the Crossings HOA takes no responsibility in screening or training distinguished babysitters in our community, we are happy to provide a networking medium for parents and babysitters to connect. Towards that end, if you are interested in being listed in the community’s babysitter network, please forward your contact information to the Social Committee through the community website. Living in Southwest Charlotte To natives, southwest Charlotte was always just Steele Creek, because for a long time that was the only neighborhood in this part of town.

How times change. Over the past decade, the number of households in southwest Charlotte has doubled. And thanks to the new leg of I-485 which recently opened and the rising housing costs in south Charlotte, southwest Charlotte is expected tbe one of the primary residential and business

growth spots of the future.

o

evelopment.

it

While Steele Creek offers the charm of an established neighborhood, this area has much to offer if you’re in the market for a new home. Recently developed communities line N.C. 49, the main thoroughfare of southwest Charlotte, and higher-end communities are under way on the Mecklenburg side of Lake Wylie. You’ll find southwest Charlotte homes listed in real estate area 7.

The Sanctuary, a 1,300-acre community off Shopton Road West on the shores of Lake Wylie, is one of the most unique developments in the region. Referring to each of its homesites as “preserves,” The Sanctuary’s sites range from two to more than 13 acres, averaging about five acres. The community features 20 miles of nature trails, 200 acres of natural areas and The Camp, a lakefront community center with swimming pools, tennis courts, a fitness center, kids’ room, playground, picnic areas and a boating center. Twenty million-dollar homes are part of the development; homesites range from $300,000 to $2 million.

Another luxury community is The Palisades, covering 1,500 acres of a Lake Wylie peninsula just south of N.C. 49. It offers a Nicklaus Design championship golf course, country club, equestrian center, soccer complex and nature trails. Homes at The Palisades range from the $300s to more than $2 million.

Covering 1,050 acres, Berewick is a mixed-use development near I-485. The development includes office and retail space, as well as multi-family housing in the town center. Berewick also offers several neighborhoods with single-family homes ranging from $140,000 to $450,000.

Following the residential buildup, the area has seen a surge of retail and entertainment growth. The Ayrsley project at I-485 and N.C. 49 includes 140 acres of business dThis new design features shops, restaurants, hotels, movie theaters, a branch of the YMCA, and luxury apartments and townhomes designed with the feel of an old European village. Calling itself the “Town Center of Southeast Charlotte,” the development anticipates the creation of 53,000 new jobs, which would makethe second-largest employment district in the state.

For many years, southwest Charlotte was attractive only to industrial companies. Today, it draws high-tech companies and national headquarters, with new buildings and office parks announced frequently.

The 400,000-plus-square-foot campus for Microsoft Corp. is at ArrowPoint, off Arrowood Road. In addition to Microsoft, ArrowPoint’s major tenants include BellSouth and the U.S. headquarters of Royal & SunAlliance Insurance. Moving its headquarters from Minneapolis, Minn., the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association now calls Charlotte home. Aptly located on the Billy Graham Parkway, the 63-acre site features the Billy Graham Center for World Evangelism as well as the Billy Graham Library, which chronicles the history of evangelism and the life of the famous evangelist. The library anticipates thousands of visitors each year, and the center itself Off Carowinds Boulevard is the 31,000-square-foot building and 18-acre Southeast Campus for nondenominational Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary, which opened in 2003.

Whitehall, one of Charlotte’s largest office parks, includes a technology park and corporate center. Source Technologies has created its state-of-the-art U.S. headquarters here.

Whitehall Commons, a 585,000-square-foot shopping center – the largest in southwest Charlotte – includes a Wal-Mart and Lowe’s, and plans for residential projects could add 6,500 homes to the mixed-use development.

Within Whitehall’s 700 acres is the 45-acre Whitehall Nature Preserve. Take a tour and you’ll find the preserve, owned by the Catawba Lands Conservancy, is home to several varieties of

salamander and frog indigenous to the rare, seasonal wetlands.

You will not believe you’re only minutes from the city when you visit McDowell Park on Lake Wylie. The park features 1,108 picturesque acres of forest where you can hike, picnic, camp or visit the nature center.

Another recreational spot is Renaissance Park, near the Charlotte Coliseum on Tyvola Road. This popular county park includes an 18-hole golf course, athletic fields, biking trails and tennis courts.

Off Tyvola Road, the Charlotte Coliseum, which seats 24,000, hosts numerous concerts and other

sporting events throughout the year.

Just around the corner from the Coliseum is the Charlotte Regional Farmers Market. While you can visit just about any day of the week, on spring weekends you’ll find the greatest selection of vendors from all over the Carolinas. Wander through each shed and chat with farmers while selecting your produce, flowers, baked goods and even crafts. Central Piedmont Community College recently opened the Harper Campus off Arrowood Road. The high-tech campus specializes in teaching graphic arts, printing, electronics and welding. It is home to the Harper National Flexographic Center, a key-learning center for those who want to enter the printing field.

The Steele Creek Library on Steele Creek Road near N.C. 49 recently opened its brand-new 15,000-square-foot facility in front of the new Southwest Middle School. The new building provides a wealth of books, technology and programs for families.

Paramount’s Carowinds, a 100-acre theme and water park that straddles the N.C.-S.C. border, is a major family attraction. The young and young-at-heart enjoy more than 100 rides, shows and attractions.

Charlotte/Douglas International Airport, US Airways’ largest hub, serves 124 cities with 635 daily departures. The airy, sun-lit terminal welcomes passengers with rocking chairs and piano music, along with shops and restaurants, but you’ll have to move quickly to get a rocking chair – it’s a hot property for folks between flights.

ABOUT STEELE CREEK

A great place to live, work, and play!

The Steele Creek Community is located in southwest Mecklenburg County and generally includes the area south of Charlotte-Douglas Airport and west of Sugar Creek and I-77. The industrial areas along Westinghouse Boulevard separate the residential and commercial areas of Upper Steele Creek from those of Lower Steele Creek .

The community's area is about 47 square miles. The area's Census 2000 population was 25,282, but by 2004 the population had increased to over 31,000, a 25% increase. Most of the population and over half of the area is within the Charlotte city limits.

The Steele Creek Community is one with long heritage and history in formation of our county and state. Most likely, Scotch-Irish immigrants who came through Philadelphia and followed the wagon roads south to a more temperate climate founded the community in the late 1600's and early 1700's. Settlers found virgin forestland inhabited by a large variety of wildlife.

Steele Creek, the small stream from which the community gets its name, rises from a spring on property near the intersection of Steele Creek Road and Shopton Road and flows south and east into South Carolina. Some historians attribute the name "Steele" to a family living near the headwaters of the creek in early settlements. However, no family with that name can be confirmed as living in the area. We can trace land grants made by the King of England in 1751 to the Neely, McDowell, and Whiteside families living in Steele Creek. Families with these names still live in the community.

With the strong Scotch influence, Presbyterian Churches began to dot the countryside. Steele Creek Presbyterian, founded in 1760 on Steele Creek Road, was one of the historical first seven churches in the county. Steele Creek provided two signers of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence on May 20, 1775, a document that preceded by more than one year the Declaration that we celebrate on July 4 each year.

Duke Power 's predecessor, the Catawba Power Company, built the Catawba Hydroelectric Station and its 668 acre lake in 1904. This was the first generating station in the Duke system. The "New Catawba" hydro station replaced this facility at the same location in 1925. In 1960 the station and the lake it impounded was renamed after W. Gill Wylie, one of the company's founders. These facilities have created electrical power and later, recreational opportunities for thousands. Lake Wylie is the lowest in the chain of lakes along the Catawba River in western Mecklenburg County. It has 325 miles of shoreline and 13,443 acres of surface water.

In 1940, the U.S. Government bought 2266 acres in Steele Creek to build an ammunition assembly plant. It employed over 12,000 people at one time. Renamed in 1946 to the U.S. Naval Ammunition Depot, the depot was phased out in 1951 and later auctioned to private industry. The area became known as "Arrowood," named for the dairy that bordered on one side. The population is decreasing in the northern fringes of Steele Creek due to the airport buying out of properties in airport noise corridors and for expansion. But elsewhere in Steele Creek, development is booming.

Most residential and commercial development continues to be concentrated along the S Tryon Street corridor, but several large new residential communities are being developed in the western fringes of Steele Creek. As the area has matured, more housing and retail choices are becoming available.

Upper Steele Creek is home to the new Berewick neighborhood and the mixed-use Ayrsley development. Businesses in the Whitehall area along S Tryon Street offer residents a variety of choices for shopping and dining.

In Lower Steele Creek, the intersection of Highways 49 and 160 (S Tryon Street and Steele Creek Road) has seen major new development and is considered by many residents as their "Town Center." New stores continue to open in the RiverGate Center, and a grand opening is planned for early 2007. The new Palisades and Sanctuary developments continue to receive recognition for their environmental sensitivity.

ABOUT THE STEELE CREEK RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION The Steele Creek Residents Association originally was formed in 1980 to fight a hazardous waste incinerator that was planned behind Central Steele Creek Presbyterian Church. The new association ended up suing to stop the construction. After that, the group decided to stay intact to monitor other things happening in the community and to make sure they never were surprised again. Committees

Land Use Committee

The Land Use Committee was formed and worked with the Planning Commission to make sure that the association received notices of any rezoning petitions within Steele Creek and to make sure that the Planning Commission informed the petitioners to meet with the committee. That arrangement has continued and has given the association the opportunity to review and comment on any development plans that require rezoning. Members regularly speak at City Council rezoning hearings about development plans within Steele Creek. The Land Use Committee continues to stay informed about new construction and rezoning petitions and meets with developers to review, comment on, and potentially improve plans to the benefit of the community.

Steele Creek Community Trail Committee

In summer 2003 a group of citizens began meeting to promote the development of a network of trails throughout Steele Creek. In May 2004 the Residents Association established the Steele Creek Community Trail Committee to provide structure to the group. The Committee meets on the third Thursday of each month at the Steele Creek Athletic Association meeting house at 13350 Choate Circle. For more information, visit the Steele Creek Community Trail web site or e-mail [email protected].

Olympic Committee

A small group of Steele Creek residents has been discussing how to draw the community together to encourage support for area schools, parks, and other facilities. The main focus of discussion has been the need for improved athletic facilities at Olympic High School. This group has been recognized as a committee of the Steele Creek Residents Association. However, its organization and development are in the early stages. For more information, visit the Olympic Committee web page or e-mail [email protected].

Meetings

The association typically meets annually in January or February. Representatives from a variety of organizations are invited to discuss issues of interest to local residents. The primary speaker for the 2006 meeting was Chief Darrel Stephens of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Other past speakers have represented Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Charlotte-Douglas Airport, the North Carolina Department of Transportation, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public

Library and the Steele Creek Branch Library, Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department, and various residential and commercial developers.

The Steele Creek Historical and Genealogical Society Of the Old Steele Creek Township

Mecklenburg County, North Carolina

History

The original Steele Creek Township dates back to the first census taken in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, however, reference to Steele Creek dates back to before the formation of the county. The area originally encompassed the entire southwest part of the county and the Catawba River is the boundary on the west and south parts of the community. The old Nation Ford Road, which was used by Indians long before the white men entered the area, bounds it on the east side. Today, Charlotte and the Douglas International Airport bound it on the north side.

In 1994, because Charlotte was growing and annexing a great portion of Steele Creek, it was decided that we would form a Historical and Genealogical Society to try to preserve the history of the community and also search out information regarding the original families that settled in the area. There are a few homes in the area designated as "Historic", but most have been destroyed for growth. Our goal was to locate pictures of some of the old homes that no longer exist or locate them on a map, photos of the old schools that no longer exist and stores, post offices and other places. Another goal was to collect family histories of the early settlers, records of old wills, bibles, letters and memories of the older people in the community related to the old families.

Today, the city has annexed about two-thirds of the community and Steele Creek will soon all be in the city of Charlotte. We are fortunate to have one of Mecklenburg County’s "original" seven Presbyterian churches. Old historic Steele Creek Presbyterian church and cemetery is located in the community and dates back to at least the late 1740s when Mecklenburg County was still part of Anson County, NC. Some of the earliest graves have death dates in the 1760s.

Another old cemetery is located just across the state line adjoining I-77 but within sight of the Steele Creek "border". That is what is left of old Blackstock Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church which was the "mother" church of Central Steele Creek Presbyterian today. That church was formed in 1793 and the first grave in the cemetery is dated 1794. Over one half of the members of that original church were from the Steele Creek community.

In the lower part of the community near the Catawba River, is located Pleasant Hill Presbyterian church and cemetery. This church was formed from old Steele Creek Presbyterian in 1836 by members of the old church that were located at the southern end of the community and needed a church closer to them. The oldest grave in that cemetery is that of Mary M. Erwin, who died October 17, 1844. She was the wife of A. R. Erwin and the daughter of Dr. W. T. and Mary D. Maclean. (This cemetery will be added to the Mecklenburg GenWeb page in the near future.)

Two African-American churches that were created immediately after the Civil War were Mt. Olive Presbyterian church and McClintock Presbyterian. Mt. Olive was located in the northern part of the community when it was formed, but in the 1880s a new township of Berryhill was broken from the Steele Creek Township and Mt. Olive now is located in that township. Berryhill is still included in our Steele Creek History. McClintock is located near the middle of the community and has a much smaller cemetery. Mt. Olive Presbyterian church cemetery records are on the Mecklenburg County GenWeb page and hopefully by the end of this year, we will have catalogued McClintock’s cemetery and it will be added to the Genweb page.

The Baptist members in the community attended old Flint Hill Baptist which is located near the NC/SC line in upper York County. This church was formed in the 1790s and several Steele Creek families are buried there.

The oldest Methodist church in the community is Zoar United Methodist, a very small church, which was formed in 1861 and it also has a small cemetery adjoining it. This church is located in the southeastern part of the community close to the South Carolina state line.
