Getting smart about energy saving is good business sense for operators. Networks, exchanges and data centers consume vast amounts of electricity for direct powerand cooling. Rural locations and emerging markets incur the additional cost of fuel, securityand maintenance for diesel generators. Minimizing all these costs is a priority as energyprices rise around the world and as more operators commit to carbon emissions reductions.

Energy saving is not a new challenge– network managed services vendors have handledthe issue on operators’ behalf for several years. The more recent development isoperators seeking to combine their internal experience with their M2M capabilities tocreate new services for customers.

• Deutsche Telekom is offering a package of heat efficiency and property management services in Germany with its partner DIS IT Solutions. DT will install thermostats, water meters and humidity sensors and will process the data. An initial customer is Leipzig-based LAS, which provides billing services to utilities and real estate companies.

• In the Middle East, Etisalat has linked up with Pacific Controls, a specialist in M2M-enabled facilities automation, to jointly market services across a range of verticals.

• In 2011, Vodafone formed a global partnership with Bosch Group to create a joint solution for managing lifts, HVAC and escalators.

Remote monitoring and control of commercial and public buildings offer significantsavings potential, in contrast to the smart home which is a nascent interest for consumerstoday. Typical resource-intensive facilities are lifts and escalators, heating, ventilation andair conditioning systems (HVAC), lighting, motors and refrigeration. Informa sees imminentgrowth in retrofit of large buildings in cities worldwide, in industrial plants and businessparks, and in new build, particularly in the Middle East and Asia.

Some enterprises are becoming their own Energy Services Company (ESCO) andexploring opportunities to cut bills and sell excess power or heat into the grid. USretailer Wal-Mart consumes massive amounts of electricity for refrigeration, heatingand lighting. It intends to install 1,000 or more solar panels on store roofs and tocut the energy intensity of its buildings by 20% from 2010 levels.

ESCOs are prime target partners and customers for telcos, especially if some largerplayers emerge from this notoriously fragmented market. However, operators facestrong competition from building facilities equipment manufacturers and energymanagement system vendors. The telco advantage lies in bundling of energymanagement with broadband data, mobility solutions, M2M for security andsurveillance, and WAN/LANs. This is a market that can only grow. With the rightpartners and a strong foundation in their own energy saving activities, operatorsshould be able to establish an early presence that delivers long-term revenue.

Informa Telecoms & Media is delighted to bring you Telco Energy &Infrastructure Efficiency, the dedicated, specialised event focussed onminimising CAPEX, OPEX and payback time, on telco energy savingsolutions and network infrastructure. In addition to exploring how telecomoperators are positioning themselves as energy management providers, andcleaning up vertical end users' operations with cellular solutions.

The challenge to lower carbon emissions and ensure energy resilientnetworks is still rising: smartphone penetration continues to grow; 4Gincreases demand for, as well as speed of, data and cloud services; andoperators are still faced with the task of modernising older networks.Hence, energy costs for operators’ businesses, along with their carbonemissions continue to grow daily, be it in base stations, data centres orretail stores.

Bringing specialist speakers from telecom operators, innovative technologistsand vertical industry players, Telco Energy & Infrastructure Efficiencydelivers only high level content, to address how telecom operators can:

• Sustain a reduction in their carbon emissions, enabling cost savings and market differentiation

• Increase energy efficiency across their networks and whole business infrastructure with minimum CAPEX and OPEX: from data network switching to smart cooling systems in data centres!

• Monetise vertical sectors’ need for ‘virtual solutions’, and become smart energy management solution providers themselves

• Build sustainable, long term renewable energy supplies to power their modernising networks

Use your time efficiently and meet with established and new industrycontacts, to brainstorm, question and take away telco best practice fromnetwork infrastructure efficiency to data centre design.

We look forward to an interactive two days of learning and networking! See you at London’s top sustainable venue, 15Hatfields, on the 12 & 13 November 2013!
